Dog-friendly hotels — not so much. I knew it was only a matter of time before our aging air conditioning units called it quits. With rather large dogs, I also knew a hotel was not an option if our units died in the middle of the peak season. My wife and I decided to look into replacement before the inevitable occurred. We had five quotes from both local and larger valley contractors. Travis with ProSkill impressed us with his promptness, knowledge, and thoroughness. Travis was the only contractor to do a calculation on our house, then come back and present a proposal in person. I knew I had my guy! Their pricing was beyond fair for top quality units, especially when considering all the extra work they did beyond just “changing out the boxes”, as Travis says. The final install was a work of art, and the team cleaned up with care. I will gladly continue to refer Travis and the ProSkill team to all my neighbors and friends. - Charles H., Magic and Zoe, Anthem Resident

We live in Anthem. And every representative of ProSkill lives in Anthem, Tramonto or Desert Hills.

We Advertise Our Prices Rather than “matching” the other guys, we believe in offering the best rates from the beginning. ProSkill has the prices the other guys have to try to match.

On time. In uniform. Clean & polite.

ASK DOREEN

THAT SAD, FIRST OFFER… Dear Doreen, Our house was on the market for only a few weeks when we got an offer. It wasn’t a good offer and we decided to counter close to our asking price. We never heard back. Our agent contacted their agent to find the buyers bought a house nearby. Our house is still on the market and getting fewer showings. Should we have taken that first offer? Is what my agent said true? Is the first offer the best? Frustrated in Fireside Dear Frustrated in Fireside, Your agent was probably right. In my experience, the first offer is the best more times than not. While the first instinct is to hold out for a better offer, a brief conversation between agents can often bring negotiations to a place acceptable to both parties. I’ve seen offers turned down during the first month, only to have the same or less accepted months later. Markets can change in a couple weeks, and good agents have a strong sense of the local market. Activity is highest during the first few weeks as buyers rush to see new listings. By pricing it right and trying to catch that first buyer, you could have sold it already. Now, you might consider taking it off the market and trying again after the new year. Best of luck! Doreen

D

eer Valley Unified School District is hosting community input meetings about redrawing the boundaries for the new K-8 school in the Sonoran Foothills neighborhood, which will open for the 2015-16 school year. About 50 residents attended the first meeting Sept. 10 at Norterra Canyon School; many distressed by possible plans to relocate a small section of Fireside at Norterra to the new school. And, while Jim Migliorino, associate superintendent for fiscal services, assured concerned parents that the proposal was simply “a conversation starter,” it became clear some students in the area would be displaced from their current school. “We’ve done many boundary changes over many years,” said Migliorino, “Our experience is that the parents have more concern about the boundary change than the students do.” Fireside residents requested DVUSD redraw the boundary to keep Fireside students together at Norterra Canyon School. But, DVUSD projects Norterra Canyon’s enrollment—after redistricting— will swell to 1,058 by 2018, well over its capacity of 968. The new Sonoran Foothills school would feed into Barry Goldwater High School.

ere are three great reasons to make an annual autumn journey to the White Mountains: 1) The incredible stands of quaking aspen trees decked out in breathtaking fall colors; 2) cool days with even cooler nights that bring a chance to wear a jacket and jeans and enjoy some relief from the desert heat; and, 3) endless miles of hiking/ biking/horseback riding trails through the forest. It’s happening now and just waiting for your arrival. Now, add to this the spectacle of the ancient pueblo Casa Malpais —the archaeological site of the

White Mountains—and you have all the reasons you need to make this enjoyable fall road trip. Named by the Spanish Conquistadors, Casa Malpais or “House of the Badlands,” is a 14.3-acre complex built by the ancient Mogollon people beneath the rim of a shield volcano that erupted some 800,000 years ago. Near the Little Colorado River, these ruins are of one of the largest and most complex Mogollon communities in the United States. Casa Malpais, just two miles from downtown Springerville, was built around 1250 CE and occupied for only about

120 years before it was abandoned. A great kiva, a pueblo-enclosing wall, three masonry staircases, terraced farming fields, rock art panels and seed-grinding areas are still evident. The pueblo contained more than 100 rooms, some of which were two stories. Throughout the pueblo, aligned volcanic stones represent astronomical calendars that mark the morning light of the summer, winter solstices and the spring and fall equinoxes. A tall basalt pillar that once tethered eagles and hawks still stands. The feathers of those birds became part of the pueblo’s sacred ceremonies. Ancient volcanic activity created a vast series of underground tunnels which were used for tombs and as food storage areas. A National Historic Landmark, Casa Malpais is owned by the City of Springerville which operates daily guided tours starting at the museum. The ruins are a short 10 miles from the cool pines of Greer and within 20 miles of fishing splendor at Big Lake. So much to do and see in the amazing White Mountains. io

ermite? Then again, he “mite” not! Come on, what’s better than a corny pun to start this week’s column? (Nobody ever laughs at my termite joke.) With the monsoon on its way out, it’s time to check for telltale signs of the desert subterranean termite. When the summer rain hits the ground, a very tiny light bulb goes off in the termite’s very tiny head and he knows it’s time to swarm.

Thin “waist” HE MITE NOT Not Your Momma’s Termite While most other types of termites infest your home (actually building colonies there) the subterraneans live in underground colonies and only come up for food. Because the subs have to go back to their colonies after enjoying a meal of 2-by4s and drywall, they are eradicated by putting a chemical barrier between the ground and your home.

‘Mud’ is Just a Figure of Speech Our termites can’t survive out of their habitat, so to navigate from the ground to your house, they build mud tubes. The tubes aren’t really mud, but a mixture of digested food and termite poop. nthem Community Council has started a petition that opposes EPCOR’s option to reconsolidate Anthem with the Agua Fria wastewater district. Reconsolidation would significantly increase Anthem’s wastewater rates. Meanwhile, Anthem has agreed to a rate freeze in the event that a decision cannot be made by Dec. 31. The rate freeze would suspend

the third and final phase of deconsolidation from Agua Fria, which would have further reduced Anthem’s wastewater rates. As of this writing, only 1,472 people have signed the petition; barely 15 percent of Anthem’s target. To sign, visit ipetitions.com/petition/ anthem-wastewater.
