Solar-ready Roof?

Dear Doreen, Should I replace the roof before installing solar panels? My neighbor said he heard it’s the best idea. Neighbor News

SECURITY DOOR & WINDOW SPECIALS $

Dear News, I contacted our friend Mark Hughes, a roofer with Rain Man Roofing & Waterproofing Services. Here is his response: Solar panels last up to 25 years, so make sure your roof is up for the job! Consider the roof ’s age, condition and the cost of repairs or replacement. The condition of the underlayment can’t be known until the tiles are removed, but the life expectancy is 12–15 years or more, if maintained. Hire a licensed roofer to inspect your roof before going solar. Removing panels after installation is costly and can cause damage. (And, you’ll have to pay for electricity while they’re off.) The long-term solution is to install solar on a roof in good condition. Or, replace the roof only over the sections designated for the panels. Hope that helps! Doreen

f you didn’t make it to the real deal last week in New Orleans, don’t miss the 12th annual celebration of “Fat Tuesday” this Saturday at the Roadrunner. In typical Mardi Gras style, the event promises a little unbridled fun with an eye on philanthropy. Live music by local favorite “Zimis” will keep the party hopping. Look for traditional Mardi Gras cuisine: gumbo, boiled crawfish and po-boys (New Orleans’ take on the sub). Nanette McClelland-Miller has been the reigning queen of the krewe for 11 years. She special-orders crawfish, Mardi Gras beads, even seasonings direct from the heart of Cajun country. McClelland-Miller relishes the event as, not only a way to celebrate

her heritage, but a way to raise funds to support the community she loves. “We’ve been able to use this celebration as an opportunity to raise funds for a variety of people, schools and organizations,” she said. “We’ve been fortunate to have the support of North Valley businesses and we’ve been able to turn this into one of the largest fundraising events in the Amy Bennett community.” The celebration has raised $100,000 over the past 11 years, according to McClelland-Miller. What to Look For in a Boarding Facility

n your visit, ask to see all the O places your pet may be taken. Pay particular attention to the following:

• Does the facility look and smell clean? • Is there sufficient ventilation and light? • Is a comfortable temperature maintained? • Does the staff seem knowledgeable and caring? • Are pets required to be current on their vaccinations, including the vaccine for canine kennel cough (Bordetella)? • Does each dog have his own adequately sized indoor/outdoor run or a schedule for exercise? • Is bedding provided to allow dogs to rest off the concrete floor? • Are cats housed away from dogs? • Is there enough space for cats to move around comfortably? • Is there enough space between the litter box and food bowls? • How often are pets fed? • Can the owner bring the pet’s food? • What veterinary services are available? • Are other services available such as grooming, training, bathing?

• Can they provide references? • How many other pets are they currently caring for? • Are they familiar with local emergency vet clinics? • If the sitter visits the home (instead of residing there while you are away), how often will they visit? How long will they stay during each visit? • Will the sitter walk the dog or just let it out into the yard? • If it is summer, what care will be taken to protect the animal from the heat?

Do Your Research

It is important to thoroughly research any sitter or facility before entrusting them with the care of your pet. These providers are listed as a convenient place to begin your research and are not necessarily our recommendations. io

What to Ask a Pet Sitter • Can the sitter provide proof they are insured and bonded? • Will sitter administer medications, if necessary? • Can they provide documentation of services and fees? • What training and experience do they have?

FENCE

Avoiding the

Controlled Drips By Chris Prickett cprickett@anthemnews.com

A

re you getting dripped to death? With the exception of cacti and possibly the weeds in my yard, most of our vegetation would be dead if we didn’t water it regularly. Everybody knows that. But did you know that almost every single person reading this column over-waters? That’s right bucko, you, too! (Me, too, but I’m working on it.) We buy or rent a house and assume that whoever originally installed the drip system had a Ph.D. in water management. Or, more likely, we just don’t think much about it at all. Here are a few things to think about while you’re on the subject of thinking about water.

0–10 GPH Adjustable Drippers That stands for zero-to-10 gallons per hour. That means the drip line has the capability of delivering from nothing to buckets of water per hour. On many homes, the original design was to run skinny black “spaghetti” tubing to every plant (multiple

lines to trees) and choke back the main zone valve so everything gets a little bit. When stuff dies from dehydration, the fix is to turn the water up so now everything gets more water. Often that’s too much depending on the plant, the season, and/ or the orientation. A pack of 10, 0-10 GPH adjustable drippers costs less than $5. Add these to the tip of the spaghetti, and with a twist you can control how much each plant gets.

Sprinklers, Timers and Controllers That

grey box you never dare touch is the keeper of all landscape water control. Don’t be daunted. Google the model number and find the manual online. Depending on the model, it can dictate which days, how long, and how many times a day your plants, trees, and grass gets watered. Some also have a feature that detects rain and will suspend watering automatically.

Check for Leakage Did you know up

to 10 percent of your water usage can be attributed to drips? Landscape lines are notorious for leaking. Look for leaks yourself or hire someone who knows what they’re doing. I guarantee you’ll find a few.

VALVE LEAK NIGHTMARE

Y

ou’ve heard the horror stories about your neighbor’s $900-water bill due to a stuck irrigation valve. “It happens all the time when valves wear out. They can stick open, stick shut or leak,” according to Dennis Lee of D&L Sprinkler Service. He said he has seen instances where valves have been stuck on for several weeks before being discovered. This can lead, not only to astronomical water bills, but also to sink holes, foundation problems, wall decay, and dead plants and trees, Lee said. There’s really no reliable prevention, Lee said, so the cure is to be vigilant. Do a monthly inspection by turning on your system and making sure the drip line has good pressure and shuts off when it’s supposed to. Don’t ignore wet spots or puddles.

Signs of over-watering

• Soil is constantly damp. • Young leaves become light green or yellow. • Young shoots are wilted. • Leaves are green, yet brittle. • Algae and mushrooms are growing.

How much should I water?

Water the root zone to the following root depth every time you water: • Lawn and garden: 6–12 inches • Shrubs: 12–24 inches • Trees: 18–36 inches • Check saturation by pushing soil probe into the ground soon after you irrigate. The soil probe should easily slide through the wet soil and become difficult when reaching dry soil. SOURCE University of Arizona Cooperative Extension
