ASK DOREEN

Pool Safety and the Fair Housing Act Dear Doreen, I found the almost-perfect home for rent. The problem is I have two small children, ages 4 and 6, and this home has a pool with no fence. I asked the landlord to install a pool barrier but he refuses. He said they’re my kids, so I should pay for it. I really want this house since good rentals are hard to find, but I honestly can’t afford a pool barrier. Isn’t it the landlord’s responsibility to put one in? In Search of Safe Home Dear ISO Safe Home, The building code for pool barriers differs by city/county. So, the landlord might be able to bring his pool to code with the addition of a simple alarm on the sliding door. But, it sounds like he’s flat out refusing and shifting the additional cost to you. By doing this, he is effectively charging you more money to rent his house than he would someone without children. This could be construed as a violation of fair housing regulations. Please, don’t consider this as advice! I will advise you, however, to ask a real estate lawyer about this matter. If you don’t know of one, call us—we can give you a few recommendations. Doreen

‘Mom Has More Family Now’

L

abor Day weekend was such a reminder of ASR opening last year, Sept 1. It was so exciting and such a beautiful home. After I arranged to have Mom live there I was glad and scared at the same time. It was so hard to take her out of her home but Cheryl and Sam made it extremely easy for me. They explained everything to Mom and made her feel welcome, safe and at home. As the year has gone by and Mom has adjusted to her new home, all I have is gratitude to Cheryl and Sam for the wonderful care Mom receives there.

Gayla and her mom

just before dinner, I could smell the wonderful food cooking and Sam and his son were there talking and laughing with Mom. I had such a wonderful feeling of happiness because I felt like I was leaving her with her family who loves her and cares for her.

It was a great decision to move Mom to a new home with other people because she is much happier. She is on a schedule of activities and meals and I always know what she is doing on any given day. Mom living at ASR allows It doesn’t get any better than that. I me the freedom to travel and know love ASR! that she is cared for and her schedule remains the same. As I left her yesterday —Gayla

HAPPY 1st BIRTHDAY, ASR

During the many years we’ve run Anthem Senior Living—the only 10-bed licensed facility in Parkside for over a decade—not a week went by without someone asking “when will you be opening another?” Last year, we knew the time was right so we went into high gear renovating our second Anthem location. And, one year ago, Anthem NOW OFFER Senior Retreat was born. Our goal was to ING N ATIONWID…E have three families by December 2013. But before we even opened SENIO the doors, we had 10 families ready to move in with two on the RELOCATRIO waiting list. Thank you to the many people who have joined Anthem SERVICES N Senior Living and Anthem Senior Retreat and let us become part of your wonderful families! Anthem &in
