ASK DOREEN

Can’t Agent Get Higher Price?

Dear Doreen, I am not feeling very confident with the advice my prospective agent is giving me. I think he is trying to set the price too low. I told him I need a certain amount in order to make this work and he said I will most likely have to take $5,000 to $10,000 less. I feel like if he does his job, he will be able to get the buyers to pay more. Could I please get your advice? Insecure in Echelon Dear Insecure, First and foremost, if you don’t feel confident with an agent before you sign a listing contract, you shouldn’t list with him! Talk with multiple agents to get a better idea of what a correct listing price is. Beware of agents who just tell you what you want to hear. Assuming your almost-agent is correct on the pricing, it is very difficult to get buyers to pay more. Remember, most buyers will have the home appraised. An agent’s job is to market the home, get people in the door and then do the best negotiation possible. If your guy can’t do those things, list with someone who can. Doreen

Denial or Reality?

Your perception of a situation is your assisted living isn’t accurate, yet you are reality, but do you really know the facts? following their lead? Many depictions create a perception that assisted living is not a desirable arrangement for your loved ones. How many times have you seen a nursing home in a movie and thought “I would never want to live there or put my mom or dad in a ‘home’ like that.”

Take away the emotion and the financial considerations and ask yourself honestly: “What is in Mom’s/Dad’s best interest?” In most cases, you already know they are not safe living alone. But if you have doubts, ask yourself this: Is Mom/Dad doing the following?

Consider, though, if your parent is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, dementia, Parkinson’s or cancer. Will you hope for the best even though you know living alone is not a good idea for them? Will you completely disrupt your family by bringing your parent to live with you?

• Cooking nutritious meals?

In most cases, no decision is made until something terrible happens forcing a decision. By then, the cost has risen and more importantly, your parent’s quality of life has plummeted.

• Getting enough exercise so constipation and poor circulation aren’t a problem?

• Taking medication properly? • Steady enough on their feet that falling isn’t a high risk? • Are they around others at least four days a week?

If you answered “no” to one or more of the above, please call or email for What if mom or dad would be happier a tour of ASL or ASR today. See for yourself how your perception of assisted with people their own age vs. living alone and scared? What if their reality of living may not be the reality.

Spectrum Retirement Communities is proposing to build its fourth assisted living facility in Arizona off Venture Court in Anthem.

Second Assisted Living Facility Eyes Anthem By Amanda Niemerg aniemerg@anthemnews.com

Just as Anthem approved Merrill Gardens’ design proposal for an assisted living facility, [See “Council Approves Assisted-Living Facility,” In&Out, March 6, 2014], another senior living facility has set its sights on Anthem. Spectrum Retirement Communities is exploring the possibility of building a 160unit senior living facility on Venture Court, south of Anthem’s Civic Building. Spectrum’s Vice President of Marketing Kathleen MacDonald said they are aware of the other facility. “We are very interested in Anthem based on the research we have done. The demographic studies show there is a demand for senior housing like this.” The 6.4-acre lot targeted for the project is currently zoned for commercial office space, requiring Spectrum to jump through some hoops to move forward. According to a letter sent to residents in the area,

approval has to come from Pulte and depends on positive feedback from the community. A community information meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 12. Although MacDonald said Spectrum is in preliminary planning stages, the initial concept has been sent to the ACC’s Commercial Design Review Advisory Committee. Spectrum Retirement Communities, LLC owns and operates retirement, assisted living and memory care centers across 11 states, including two in the Phoenix-metro area and one opening soon in Chandler. io

rizonans commemorated the sacrifices made by thousands of its citizens during the 10-plusyear conflict in Vietnam with the dedication of a memorial on Nov. 9, 1985. This moving memorial, near the State Capitol in Wesley Bolin Plaza, is the work of famous sculptor Jasper D’Ambrosi. Here on this small plot of “holy ground” stand 10 columns of polished black granite engraved with the names of 613 Arizonans who “gave their last full measure” or who were missing in action in Vietnam. The 10 tablets encircle a larger-than-life statue of three American soldiers who exemplify the brotherhood and courage that bond all Vietnam War veterans. The non-profit Vietnam Veterans Association sponsors an annual Vietnam Remembrance Day at this memorial the last Sunday of April, close to the anniversary of the 1975 fall of Saigon. The Arizona Vietnam Veterans Memorial is one of 32 monuments in Wesley Bolin Plaza which acts as the state’s “national mall.” Open daily, Wesley Bolin Plaza allows citizens to walk among, learn about and remember our heroes. io

What Comes After a Parade? PHOTO BY SANDI CARLL

(There’s more work to be done)

O

ver the past decade, the Daisy Mountain Veterans Parade has become one of the largest in the state, if not the nation. I am so proud of and grateful to my fellow veterans, the local businesses and the Mary Ann Derryberry many individuals who step up to make this important event so great. So, it comes with mixed emotions that I announce, after 10 proud years as chairwoman, this will be my last. This local tradition is an integral part of what defines our Daisy Mountain community. But it hasn’t been an easy road! We have faced countless obstacles and lastminute crises, but each year I am stunned as even the busiest members of our community band together to pull off an amazing event. When it matters, we get it done. I thank all who have contributed, as well as those who line the streets to honor our vets. My energies will remain focused on veterans as I dedicate more time to Veterans First, the esteemed organization which operates Mary Ellen’s Place for single women vets in distress and, soon, Sallie’s Place for single women veterans with children. For more on this organization, visit veteransfirstltd.org. Supporting our nation’s veterans, no matter what your political affiliation, creates a cohesion that helps keep the community, indeed, the country, strong. It is this spirit that, I hope, continues in my absence to keep the parade the wonderful event it has become. If you enjoy Daisy Mountain Veterans Parade—and who doesn’t love a parade?— and want to continue to support our nation’s bravest, join the DMV and help ensure our service people receive the care, honor and gratitude they deserve. io

My 51-percent Decision … and the 7 Things I Learned By Chris Prickett cprickett@anthemnews.com

V

eterans Day is a celebration of the men and women who have served in the military. But if you talk to a vet, they are more likely to want to talk about what serving our country meant to them. You could call me a proud but accidental veteran. I didn’t join the Navy in 1977 because I was bursting with military pride. I signed up out of necessity. The pride and appreciation came later. When I was a kid, if college wasn’t an option and you wanted a ticket out of a dead-end future, you joined the service. As my senior year in high school was playing out its final chapter, I decided to “Go Navy.” It was one of the best decisions I ever hated making. It was the first time in my 17 years I did something I knew would be good for me despite not feeling like doing it. The decision to leave my family and venture into the unknown was a big deal for a kid. It was one of those 51-percent decisions. Some life lessons the military taught me:

Keep Your Commitments You can’t just up and quit when you sign up for a four-year hitch, even if the hours don’t quite fit your lifestyle.

Tired is a State of Mind You’d

be amazed how much work you can accomplish when your superior is continuously reinforcing the fact that you’re not yet finished.

Teamwork Makes for More Than Good Football When you’re 800 miles

from the nearest port and a shipboard fire breaks out, you understand what teamwork means.

Everything is a Learning Experience I spent nearly all four years in the hellish hot, noisy boiler room of a WWII vintage destroyer. After the first day or two, I knew this was not the career path for me. Looking back, I understand what hard work really is. Three months on mess duty gave me a greater appreciation and respect for those who work in life’s trenches.

“Good” is Relative When it Comes to Food Canned

peanut butter is pretty tasty when the alternative is canned meat. Bad coffee is better than no coffee, any day.

Camaraderie Depends on the Company Aboard ship, the boiler room

“snipes” stick together. On base, you defend your shipmates. On shore leave, Navy men look out for each other. But, overseas, the U.S. military watches out for our own, as well as those we are ordered to protect.

Appreciation for America Vets are a

special fraternity. While we don’t share a secret handshake, we do share a deep reverence for our great country and are intimately aware of the sacrifices made by those who served before us and after us. To my fellow veterans past and present, thank you for your service. io THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2014 |
