ASK DOREEN

Is ‘Guaranteed Sale’ Too Good to be True?

Dear Doreen, I’m so tired of trying to sell my house. It’s been months, and I’ve had no offers. I heard this guy on the radio saying he would simply buy my house— with cash— as is, no inspection. Sounds too good to be true. Is this for real? I’m tempted to call. Tempted in Tramonto Dear T in T, Every agent who offers a guaranteed-sale program does it differently, but the gist is the same. Agents agree to buy the house if it doesn’t sell within the alloted time frame. But sellers must agree to certain terms to ensure the sale. For example, some agents require you purchase a home warranty, get an inspection, repair any major problems… Some even require staging. (Not your radio guy.) If you are considering this type of contract, be sure the agent addresses all your questions before signing. Understand and accept the bottom-line price, and ask for proof of funds. My sense is this agent created the radio spot to attract desperate sellers. Remember, there is no such thing as a “free lunch.” Doreen

Denial or Reality?

Your perception of a situation is your assisted living isn’t accurate, yet you are reality, but do you really know the facts? following their lead? Many depictions create a perception that assisted living is not a desirable arrangement for your loved ones. How many times have you seen a nursing home in a movie and thought “I would never want to live there or put my mom or dad in a ‘home’ like that.”

Take away the emotion and the financial considerations and ask yourself honestly: “What is in Mom’s/Dad’s best interest?” In most cases, you already know they are not safe living alone. But if you have doubts, ask yourself this: Is Mom/Dad doing the following?

Consider, though, if your parent is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, dementia, Parkinson’s or cancer. Will you hope for the best even though you know living alone is not a good idea for them? Will you completely disrupt your family by bringing your parent to live with you?

• Cooking nutritious meals? • Taking medication properly? • Steady enough on their feet that falling isn’t a high risk? • Are they around others at least four days a week?

In most cases, no decision is made • Getting enough exercise so until something terrible happens, forcing constipation and poor circulation a decision. “I like the new park more. I like it because it has new stuff. I like the splash pad best and I like the rope between the rocks.”

Impasta Carbonara

IN&OUT STAFF PHOTO

By Larry Vivola lvivola@anthemnews.com

“H

ey, Mallory, what do you want for your birthday dinner?” “Tortellini Carbonara.” “Hey, Mallory, what do you want to serve your friends this weekend?” “Tortellini Carbonara.” “Hey, Mallory, what do you want to eat tonight?” “Tortellini Carbonara.” Usually, my daughter is never at a loss for words. Parents of teenage girls, you know what I mean, don’t ya? True, of course, unless I ask what she wants for dinner. Then it’s always the same response: “Tortellini Carbonara.” We are actually at the point where the girl simply gives me the “youknow-what-I-want” nod and smirk. Like the nonverbal

exchange between a server and his or her regular customer of 40 years: “the usual.” And then food magically appears. Tortellini Carbonara is one of the most requested dishes at “Villa Vivola,” but I’ve got 99 problems with this dish. Problem No. 1 It’s an Americanized imposter of an Italian classic and, in my heart, I’m a traditionalist. Problem No. 2 It’s so easy to make, the over-the-top compliments make me feel as if I cheated. I feel unworthy of such accolades. Problem No. 3 It’s so rich, velvety and high in calories I can only think of my waistline. OK, that’s a joke. I just wanted to see if you are paying attention. Maybe I only have two problems with the dish. Ciao, Bella. io

Tortellini Carbonara 1 lb. cheese tortellini ½ lb. bacon, cut into small pieces 8 oz. heavy cream 3 Tbsp. onion, diced ½ cup peas ¼ cup Pecorino Romano cheese ½ tsp. salt

Directions 1 In a small pot, cook bacon until crisp. Remove bacon and discard all but 3 tablespoons of fat from pot (goodness). 2 Add onion to bacon fat and sauté for 3-4 minutes. Add two tablespoons of water and deglaze. 3 Add cream, cheese and salt. Simmer for 10 minutes. 4 Meanwhile, add tortellini and peas to a large pot of boiling water and cook until tortellini are done. Drain. 5 Gently stir cream mixture into tortellini until blended. Serve immediately, sprinkling each dish with bacon.

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like…

Yikes!

Prickett’s dos and don’ts for holiday decorating.

By Chris Prickett cprickett@anthemnews.com

M

y mom had this thing about buying holiday candles that we were never allowed to light. Of course, when there are four curious (OK… malicious) boys in tow, that was a statute just begging to be trampled. I remember these four candles in particular that were molded into the shape of cherubic Christmas carolers. We four squealed with juvenile delinquent delight watching their little wax heads melt away (while gleefully wailing “I’m mellllllltinnnngggg”). I have to wonder what sick mind conjured that one up in the first place.

Let’s talk tinsel When I was a kid, it was made with lead, and yes, I put gobs and gobs of it in my mouth. I remember pretending it was dental floss which, I’m sure, comes as no surprise to my longtime readers. Toxicity aside, tinsel is ugly, messy, and tests the patience of all but the most saintly decorator. You start by artistically draping a few strands at a time, but after 30 minutes, everyone is hurling it like participants in a drunken spaghetti

fight. Face it, the only people who truly like tinsel are those who earn a living in vacuum repair.

Novelty No-nos I’m also not fond of any type of “themed” decoration paying tribute to any TV show, movie, fictional character or celebrity. No SpongeBob holiday tea set or John Wayne chromefinish cowboy Christmas ornaments for this guy. (Though, truth be told, I’d kill for a Yoda-eared Santa hat… because that’s a classic!) Brilliant! So, what do I like? Lights. Lots and lots of multi-colored, LED, limitless strand-connecting, indoor/ outdoor, continuously operating (even when one is burned out), break-resistant, holiday/Christmas lights. And, I only like those when the annoying little overloadprotection fuses have been replaced by wadded up aluminum foil, ensuring a maintenance-free viewing experience. I want my lights to all be operated by one switch and I want them durable enough to withstand a volcano-spewing-giantzombie-attack. And a 10-year warranty. io
