Insurance Rates Soar
Dear Doreen, What’s up with homeowner’s insurance? I just got my bill and it went up over 20 percent! When I called my agent, he said all companies are raising rates. Is that true? I thought since you are always talking to homeowners in Anthem you might have heard more about this. I understand if you don’t know or it’s out of your area of knowledge. You don’t have to answer. —Insurance Poor Dear Insurance Poor, You are right! The recently released HomeInsurance.com Rate Report shows a considerable increase in the average 12-month
premiums for new homeowner policies in December 2011. Average 2011 premiums in December were $810, a 19-percent increase over January at $682. In other words, homeowners are paying an average of $128 more per year for new homeowners policies. The data represents approximately 15,000 policies sold by such top-rated carriers as Travelers, Safeco, the Hartford, and ASI/Ark Royal. What to do? Shop around. Ask your agent for all eligible discounts such as a home-auto package, and home security system disount. —Doreen
