first noticed back and neck pains in October 2010. The pain came and went for a few months until it became acute and her vision was severely impaired. A visit to urgent care landed her at John C. Lincoln Hospital for a CT scan where a tumor was confirmed. Emergency surgery removed most of the tumor, but a portion that reached down into her brain stem was inoperable. Chemo and radiation therapy proved ineffective as the tumor showed growth within the brain stem. Despite a new strategy in chemo treatments, the cancer continued its sinister progress. Another emergency surgery performed in February hasn’t thwarted the cancer’s progress.

Her Facebook page (search “Do Moore for a Cure”) features a picture of Ashley with friends at the Independence Day celebration. The caption reads: “Nor rain, nor hail, nor sleet, nor cancer can keep Ashley down. She enjoyed fireworks at the Anthem park with the community, her family and friends— even giving us a thumbs-up.” It was clearly a challenge for her to make it to the celebration in the midst of such aggressive medical treatment, but at 13, Ashley Moore knows the value of simple pleasures. A friend of the family called Ashley “a model of strength, enthusiasm and beauty.” Thanks for the life lesson, Ashley. And happy birthday. io JULY 19, 2012 |
