Super Bowl Windfall?

Dear Doreen, I own a lovely 4-bedroom home about 20 minutes from the University of Phoenix Stadium. I keep hearing about people renting their homes for a lot of money during Super Bowl week, and I’m seriously considering doing the same. What do you think? Super Suspicious Dear Suspicious, You are right to think twice about renting your home during Super Bowl week. Here are a few ways to shield yourself from potential damages. 1) Call your insurance company to see if extra protection might be in order. 2) Call your HOA to make sure short-term rentals are not a violation. 3) Consider listing your home with a property management company to oversee the process. The company will take a cut, but in the end, it could save you many headaches. 4) Take lots of photos of your home before listing. 5) Check what nearby homes are renting for and how much they are requiring for a security deposit—critical if you’re concerned about damage. 6) While still a gamble, best to take payment by credit card, PayPal or Square. I wish you good luck as well as good fortune. Doreen

The final K-8 boundaries have been redrawn to keep the Fireside at Norterra students together.

DVUSD Approves 2015 Boundaries By Karen Goveia kgoveia@anthemnews.com

T

he Deer Valley Unified School District Governing Board, at a Dec. 9 meeting, approved new elementary school boundaries to accommodate the opening of a new K-8 school in the Sonoran Foothills neighborhood in fall 2015. The decision came after a series of public meetings and some dissent. Initially, the proposed boundaries divided the Fireside at Norterra neighborhood into two schools. But

after receiving 50 parent requests to keep all Fireside students at Norterra Canyon School, the district redrew the boundaries. “Thankfully with a lot of input from the Fireside community we learned that there is a ‘Fireside proper’ and so we were able to come up with an alternative,” said Jim Migliorino, associate superintendent for fiscal services. The 19 Amber Hills and Carefree Crossing residents requesting to be redrawn into the new school

neighborhood from Desert Mountain, weren’t as successful. “Desert Mountain attendance area would then yield only 392 students in the year 2023-2024,” said Migliorino. “It’s a rather large campus, capable of housing 1,300 students.” The district did agree to consider changing the feeder boundaries for Boulder Creek High School to include Amber Hills and Carefree Crossing when the high school boundary committee reconvenes in the spring.

Ridgeline Moves High School Discussion Forward Ridgeline Board of Directors held a special meeting Dec. 8 to discuss the possible development of a charter high school to accommodate its K-8 population. The board voted unanimously to create a cash reserve fund to support future expansion, and to create a sub-committee to explore the high school option. A public meeting to gauge community interest for the charter high school in the North Valley is planned for Tuesday Jan. 6. “I’m excited to have the conversations moving forward on this discussion,” said Ridgeline Principal Keven Barker. Those interested in joining the high school sub-committee can email eagles@ridgeline.teamcfa.org. io

Readers react to an article identifying the Phoenix Police officer involved in a controversial shooting as Anthem resident Mark Rine. I don’t believe it was necessary to publish essentially the exact address of this officer and his family. The “need to know”could have and should have been limited to Anthem, AZ. I for one am grateful for our law enforcement officers–let’s do our part to keep them, their families, and their neighbors out of harm’s way, shall we? —Kira Langan Westin It was the Phoenix PD that released his name not Anthem News. After that it is a quick jump to find out where he lives. My thinking is that fighting with a police officer who is telling you to give it up is a pretty good way to get shot. —Kevin J. Mahoney It's public knowledge, covered by numerous media outlets. —Adam Rainbolt Between cross streets and a pile of sheriff SUVs on his street it won't be hard to figure out where he lives. I’m sure he really appreciates that. Way to watch out for his safety… It’s hard enough having his job let alone processing what happened while he was protecting people! —Nicole Rackley …I appreciate the warnings this outlet provides such as local vandalism, road closures due to accidents… etc. However, in this instance, it was a very irresponsible choice to add a photo of the cross streets and neighborhood sign. Regardless of whether the address is public knowledge or not… In my opinion I think it would be best to keep the article posted and remove the photo. —Josh Molitor JOIN THE CONVERSATION

S

hrimp scampi is my friend and has a special place in my heart. It’s a dish I grew up with. I’m not sure how you grow up with a dish, but I did. Scampi and I were living happily ever after when I received a text that shattered our world from my buddy, Paulie Stromboli. “Christine made shrimp scampi. Want some leftovers?” “One of my boys is already on his way,” is my boilerplate reply to offers of leftovers. While devouring Christine’s scampi, my first thought was, “Where has this recipe been all my life?” It was the best shrimp scampi I ever tasted. I needed her recipe. Thankfully, she was happy to share. But her “sharing” reminded me of my

grandmother’s generation and how recipes were shared back in the day. They would add “a little of this” and “a little of that” and when no one was looking, some things were “adjusted.” Full disclosure: Christine has been a little annoyed with me. You see, in a previous article, I raved about her husband’s Stromboli but didn’t give her credit for teaching it to him. He is even in my contacts as “Paulie Stromboli.” So, Christine, I apologize for not giving credit where credit was due, and I hope you take solace in knowing that you now show up in my phone as “Christine the Scampi Queen.” Scampi and Stromboli will always have an equal place in my heart and I plan to grow old with these dishes. Shrimp Scampi 1 lb. shrimp, deveined and shelled (preferably Mexican gulf shrimp) 1 lb. fresh linguine ¾ stick of lightly salted butter 4 cloves garlic, finely chopped 2 Tbsp. of olive oil 1 cup dry white wine Juice of half a lemon Pinch of red pepper, without the seeds Chopped parsley Salt and pepper Grated parmigiano reggiano (optional)

Directions 1 Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place shrimp on cookie sheet, drizzle with one tablespoon of olive oil and sprinkle with salt, pepper and red pepper. 2 Dab each with a little bit of the butter. Bake for just a few minutes (5-8 minutes) until they slightly curl and turn slightly pink. Please don’t cook ‘em to death. 3 Remove and cover with foil. 4 Put large pot of salted water to boil (for linguine). Meanwhile, in pan over medium heat, sauté garlic in remaining tablespoon of olive oil until slightly blonde. 5 Add remaining butter and wine and simmer for 2 to 3 minutes. Add lemon juice, salt and black pepper to taste. 6 Cook linguine and drain (reserving 1/2 cup of cooking water). 7 Place the linguine on a serving platter and arrange the shrimp on top and pour the garlic mixture over. 8 Pour over the reserved cooking water. Sprinkle with grated cheese or not—the cheese on seafood or not debate rages on 9 Sprinkle with parsley and serve immediately.

Is a Reverse Mortgage right for You? 1. Would you like to supplement your income? 2. Would a cash reserve for a rainy day give you peace of mind? 3. Do you want to eliminate payments and other debt? If you answered YES to one or more of the questions above, and at least one homeowner is 62 or older, then you should consider a Reverse Mortgage. (With a reverse mortgage, the home must be your primary residence and homeowners are still responsible for maintaining the property, property taxes, and homeowners insurance.)

THE JOB NUMBERS ARE UP Why jobs are still tough to get.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics recently delivered a glowing employment report with better numbers than this country has seen in years. But for recent grads and those returning to the workplace, the numbers don’t mean much.

By Amanda Niemerg aniemerg@anthemnews.com

W

ith the national unemployment rate down to 5.8 percent and 321,000 jobs added in November, the job market is looking better… on paper. For those actively seeking employment, especially those in Arizona where the unemployment rate is at 6.8 percent, the talk about the improving job outlook sounds better than the reality. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of October, the average bout of unemployment lasts eight months. However, at the end of September, there were 5 million hires and 4.7 million jobs still open according to a report issued by the BLS in November—a number not seen since 2007. With that many job openings, why is it still taking up to eight months or more to land a job?

Richard McCarty, founder of Team Job Search in Anthem, said for starters economists suspect unemployment rates are actually higher than reported and it all comes down to competition and what companies have had to do to survive since the 2008 recession. “There are a lot more people looking for a job―the number of underemployed individuals has increased and household income is lower― and for that reason, you have to do a lot more research, work harder and smarter, and more networking in order to make a connection with a company that needs your services,” McCarty said. “Job providers are searching for individuals who, in this dynamic and uncertain economic situation, can invent and reinvent themselves and their jobs on a continuing basis.” According to McCarty, there’s a new definition of “employee” and employers claim they can’t find the right people for open positions. Companies are taking their sweet time in the hiring process. Dice Holdings, Inc., owner of six career websites, reported in September it takes employers 24 days on average to fill an open position, down from 26 days in Continued on page 16

the days of in-person applications and on-thespot interviews,” Tina Ethan said.

quick Google search leads you down a rabbit hole of job search advice: “Seven Things You Must Have On Your Resume,” “How to Write the Perfect Cover Letter,” “How to Win Over the Hearts and Minds of the HR Department in 6 Seconds,” and “How to Make Your Resume Stand Out Over the Other 5,000 Applicants Applying for the Same Job.”

Job hunting is a lot like dating. Once you find that perfect match, excitement rushes through your whole body. You spend time and energy getting to know the company through their website, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn accounts (stalker much?). The interview (first date) requires careful deliberation on clothing choices, makeup and hair style. Walking out of the interview, you feel elated. You know you’re a perfect fit. You begin to imagine your life with this particular job. It will last for years as you grow together, more successful. And, then you wait for the phone to ring. As with dating, you experience a wild ride of emotions as you hold your breath for the call. Sometimes, it never comes. Other times, it’s an email instead with words like, “Although your qualifications are impressive, we have decided to go with another, more qualified candidate at this time.”

It was not lost on this job seeker that if I were reading how to make my resume stand out, chances were good the other 5,000 applicants were, too. Note: While online advice on becoming a standout can be self-negating, networking is as important as the “experts” say. Here’s what makes this grueling: Many companies require an applicant to submit to a credit check, others require federal background checks (before they even offer the position) and still others require applicants to take timeconsuming personal assessments. If, and only if, you pass any or all of the above, you may be called for a phone screen interview. A fellow job seeker expressed frustration. “The worst thing is you take time out of your day to fill out applications since all of them are online now, and then you don't get a reply or you are asked to take a personality test and then, nothing. Devastation! Especially if you were attached to that particular position. But you can’t stay down long, because while you throw yourself a pity party, those 4,999 other applicants are still out there searching and could land your perfect match. In this market, you just have to get over the rejection quickly, muster the confidence and keep pushing, searching, applying, calling and putting yourself out there. I’m happy to report after about seven months of searching, I landed The One (job, that is). io

August. That’s little consolation for the 9 million Americans still unemployed. It gets more depressing. A 2012 study by the Ladders, another career site, found recruiters take only 6 seconds to peruse a resume and decide if the skills listed match qualifications. That’s if the resume reaches the HR department. Most job searches go through websites like Indeed.com and Career Builder. Think eHarmony for employers and job seekers. But applying online doesn’t mean you will be considered by a human. Web applications could mean a resume must first be scanned by software which picks out keywords matching the job description. (Maybe job seekers should consider hash-tagging their resumes.) It’s not all bad news. The outlook for 2015 is better. Dice Holdings reported 60 percent of hiring managers surveyed plan to hire more professionals in the first half of 2015 than in the last quarter of 2014, though the hiring process is still slow. McCarty forecasts companies are “cautiously optimistic” now that elections are over and the economy is improving. io

work 55 hours a week in a restaurant alongside a dishwasher who is a doctoral candidate, a bartender who studies for the LSAT during lulls, and servers chipping away at the crippling debt of their student loans.

Stephen Boyle, an ASU alum from Anthem said, “I never took an internship. I worked my way through school to take pressure off my parents. I wish I had taken one; It would have been crucial in my field.”

I have another job at a local fashion magazine making coffee runs, grabbing clothing for photo shoots and picking up as many writing assignments as possible. It is not an internship, but it is unpaid. I work too much, sleep too little, struggle to make rent. I call home for care packages—a coffee maker, some hangers, a lamp… I am not the exception, I am the rule.

Fewer jobs. Higher requirements. Boyle is now considering returning to school for an advanced degree, as finding entry-level job in his field has proven challenging. True entry-level positions are scarce. The Wall Street Journal reports employers have been raising experience requirements for entry-level work. “The number of recruiters requesting two or more years of work experience… rose as much as 30 percent from 2007 to 2010.” It’s a Catch-22. (We know what that is, we read the book.) We need a job in our field to get a job in our field. And, we know the gigantic Boomer generation faces financial concerns of their own and are hanging on to their jobs longer. What’s an educated Millennial to do? We are taking lower paying jobs. Boyle, who graduated with degrees in History and Genetics and Developmental Biology said he works at Sky Harbor as a baggage handler making about $18,000 a year—a sum that does little to ameliorate his $25,000 student debt. “I have applied for over 50 jobs in my field but have only heard back from about 10. And, all were automatic emails telling me I didn’t get the job. It’s definitely discouraging.” According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the underemployment rate for new grads has risen from 34 percent in 2001 to 44 percent in 2012. In a recent Pew study, nine in 10 Millennials said they believe they will eventually meet their financial goals and about half said this country’s best days are still ahead. It’s not as easy as we thought, but we’re young, hungry and tilting at windmills. io

early everybody loves Christmas morning. The anticipation of what might be waiting under the tree, the smell of hot chocolate stirred with candy canes, and most importantly, the knowledge that you have 364 days until it’s time to wash, rinse and repeat. The only day of the season I enjoy more is Dec. 26. The 25th, while very enjoyable, is a bit stressful for this guy. Helping to manage (and boy do I love to manage) the gift giving, fussing over the cleanup (don’t toss the assembly instructions!) and orchestrating all the festivities with the goal of shutting down the whole mess at a decent hour, can be quite the undertaking.

The 26th is my anti-Christmas.

I usually have a light or empty calendar that day, so my morning starts with a slow wake up on a marvelously drool-soaked pillow. Coffee in bed with my iPad (used to be the paper) for about an hour or so,

then onto a hearty, but intentionally unhealthy breakfast! Even driving the day after Christmas is a joy to behold. Whether it’s extended vacations or eggnog hangovers that have the roads sparsely traveled, it’s nice to be able to dilly-dally for an extra two seconds when the light turns green and not have to worry about setting off a 10-car honk-fest. With all the shiny new bikes and such populating the neighborhood, I find it conveniently acceptable to travel a few miles under the posted speed for a change. New Year’s Eve, New Year’s resolutions, and the new year’s expectations will all be here to pinch your rosy cheeks soon enough. Take my advice and take a day (or two or three) to… just… be. No shaving, no serious faces, and no “After-Christmas-Sooper-CyberShopping-Bonanza” events. Take a walk without a destination. Have a conversation where you don’t have to be right. Watch your kids play with those must-have toys you freaked out over. And, have a happy, merry, Twentysixthmas! io THURSDAY, DECEMBER 25, 2014 |
