Tower of strength bringing cinema closer The tower crane soaring above LynnMall has been working flat out to ensure The Brickworks development is delivered in time.

morale and a general want-to-do attitude is what is generally needed and we have that in spades.

It’s become a landmark, visible for miles around, as it hoists the structural steel for the Reading Cinemas complex.

“We are very lucky. The guys have been working weekends and long days to ensure the successful completion of this project.”

Thanks to the NZ Strong team the project is making great progress and on target to open in November. The main cinema slab has been poured and timber framing and scaffolding is being erected to support the massive roof.

Work will soon start on The Brickworks dining precinct which has already been fully leased by quality restaurants and cafes.

Inside the mall the new retail specialty shops are being formed and the new Number One Shoes store is on target to open this month. Site Manager, James Corric, said the project was being completed in a tight timeframe, something only achievable through a dedicated workforce. “In any tight frame project the guys on site are key to delivery. Ivan Bartley, Kiwi Property’s development manager, said it confirmed the demand for a quality eating precinct in New Lynn. ”The Kiwi Property team undertook a great deal of market research prior to committing to this development. “What was clear was that there was a real opportunity to deliver a strong dining and entertainment precinct and capitalise on LynnMall’s positive growth prospects within its retail catchment”.

Taste of the Goode life As if the extensive pizza and pasta menu on offer at Goode Brothers wasn’t enough to satisfy the most discerning of diners, then its ‘create your own’ option surely will. Lucky diners have been enjoying the Goode life at Botany Downs for some time and now its New Lynn’s turn. The new family-friendly gastro pub will boast a tasty menu with a hefty Italian accent featuring snacks such as caramelised onion and rosemary pizza bread, bruschetta with avocado, baby pea and mascarpone and polenta chips. Peppered beef, seafood platter, salads and fried three cheese ravioli are sure to please but it’s the pizzas and pasta dishes which really inspire. “Our team of chefs develop the menu with the General Manager but one of our most popular dishes has to be the ‘create your own’ pasta section,” said Andy Roberts. “It’s great fun for families to individualise their own meal with different sauces, pasta types and toppings available. “Goode Brothers is the kind of place you can feel comfortable in, whether you’re taking your family out for lunch or dinner, or having a casual catch up with friends over snacks and a drink.”

Turkish delight at Bodrum Kitchen

True Turkish cuisine with some familiar and some exotic recipes to fire up your taste buds is on the menu at Bodrum Kitchen. It is the latest eatery from popular restaurateur Alex Isik who opened his first restaurant Mozaik Caffe in New Lynn ten years ago. He also owns the exclusive restaurants Nomad in Pt Chev and Deco Eatery in Titirangi. Named after one of Turkey’s most popular tourist destinations, Bodrum Kitchen will feature white-washed brick face walls, blue distressed shutters and copper touches throughout. “We want our customers to be transported to the paradise that we are honouring,” said Alex. “We’re catering for those that want to treat themselves, to experience something new and exciting but without spending a fortune.” The food is Turkish-inspired fine dining and Alex said his cooking influences are based on what his mother, sisters and aunties cooked for him while he was growing up along with his wife Nigar’s family’s cooking. ”I came to New Zealand in 2002, with the intention of one day starting my own restaurant. “With my beautiful wife Nigar at my side, my children on my lap and my family all around me, I am in my happy place.”

Meso with a Kiwi twist Meso will be bringing a fresh twist to the nation’s favourite takeaway at its new outlet in The Brickworks. Owners Judy Fang and Yong Wang are no strangers to LynnMall after opening the popular Matsu Sushi bar in the food court over a year ago. “We like to combine different cultural influences to satisfy what our customers ask for,” said Judy.

Judy and Yong left computer careers to make their shared passion for food into a successful business. “We love Japanese food for its freshness and beautiful presentation. “We have made a lot of friends through Matsu and are looking forward to welcoming them at Meso.”

With kitchen staff from Japan, China, Korea, Turkey and, of course, New Zealand, its cuisine couldn’t be anything but cosmopolitan. Like Matsu Sushi, Meso will be all about giving people a healthy choice and will be the perfect hunger-buster either before or after a visit to Reading Cinema. There will be three ranges to choose from – prepacked sushi, a self-service donburi hotmeal section and a dessert menu featuring Japanese treats. There will be a variety of teas on offer including green and iced tea as a healthy alternative to high sugar soft drinks.

Smoking new dining concept to debut at The Brickworks In a fast paced world, slow and smoked is the global trend in eating good meat and soon you’ll have the chance to enjoy the experience at Union Hospitality coming to The Brickworks. Its diners will be the first to savour a new type of barbeque smoker which uses slow cooking to retain the natural smoke infusion, meat juices and specialty rubs. Matt Clifford and Paul Lomax of Union Hospitality said they were looking forward to launching the innovative cooking method at The Brickworks. “We believe that our new barbeque concept will be something unique to the Auckland and New Zealand culinary experience.

“It is sure to attract diners from the wider Auckland community.” The décor will subtly reference meat markets of old. Layers of materials will give the interior the appearance of a much older building with a history going back to the district’s industrial roots. Open from breakfast through till late, Union Hospitality is keen to engage with the local community and build on the success of its two other outlets, the Northern Union gastro pub in Silverdale and Pilkingtons (Metro Top 50) in Shortland Street, Auckland CBD.

Wakey wakey here comes Shaky! Shaky Isles is the perfect place to start and end your day. Its menus have the best of what this country has to offer with its own playful and delicious take on breakfast, brunch, burgers and pizza. Open from 7.30am till late, Shaky Isles has a reputation for serving Kiwi classics in its own unique style, not to mention its own excellent coffee. Menu choices include organic soft boiled eggs with soldiers, brioche bene with wilted silverbeet and pig in a bun (bacon and aioli in a ciabatta bun). Vegetarians and meat-lovers alike won’t be able to pass up the Good Stuff sandwich, packed with mushrooms, avocado, cheese, rocket, chipotle relish and aioli toasted in Turkish bread.

Hansan - it’s all about the taste In the past few years Vietnamese food has become more and more popular around the world.

The menu contains many popular dishes of the region, but proprietor Han Chin, said his customers had their own favourites.

Rice, noodles, fresh vegetable and herbs all play big roles in Vietnamese food, making it one of the healthiest cuisines in the world.

They include spring roll, summer roll, chicken with lemon grass on rice, chicken with vermicelli, Vietnamese style pancakes, Pho beef noodle soup and prawn and pepper sauce on rice.

One of Auckland’s first Vietnamese restaurants, Hansan, was opened by the Chin family in Mt Wellington in 1999. Their business and popularity went from strength to strength, and it became the first in a chain of restaurants. Now you can sample its delicious fresh food in your local hood at the newest Hansan which is coming to The Brickworks.

Popular with adults and children alike, are Hansan’s range of amazing shakes. Take your pick from Jack Fruit, coconut, pineapple, lychee, mango, avocado or longan shake. The new restaurant will have seating for 70 and will be open from lunch through to late.

Sure to be a favourite is the Shaky Burger made from tender Angus prime beef or corn fed chicken breast. The Brickworks marks the sixth and largest Shaky Isles café to open and its design will stay true to its industrial aesthetic. Founder Sam Ansley said the architecture in the dining precinct worked well with the design elements associated with the brand. “We have a great building. It looks quite industrial and has a warehouse feel about it,” said Sam. “The interior will feature distressed timber and concrete as well as our own special Shaky graphics.”

Shoppers say LynnMall is ‘our place’ New Lynn is known for its cultural diversity and is home to many relatively new migrants from across the world. LynnMall is a great place to meet new faces as well as having super shopping facilities. We asked some shoppers what they like about the place. Russian-born Alexandra Makarova moved to NZ 12 years ago and following the birth of her daughter Maria, her mother Olga joined her.

Action packed opening planned for Reading Cinema The latest James Bond film ‘Spectre’ is leading a sensational line-up of movies tipped to open the new eight-screen multiplex Reading Cinema at LynnMall. Starring Daniel Craig as 007, ‘Spectre’ is going on worldwide release in November which coincides with the opening of the much-awaited cinema. Ben Deighton, Reading’s marketing manager, said they were very excited to have such a strong blockbuster film leading their opening line up. “There are some fantastic films scheduled for later this year and we can’t wait to showcase them all to the New Lynn community.”

The Sam Mendes-directed film is a follow up to 2012’s Skyfall and previous Bond movies Quantum of Solace and Casino Royale. Bond fans will remember Spectre (Special Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion) from Ian Fleming’s novel Thunderball and the movie Dr No.

We’ve lived in New Lynn for a year and really like it. We come to LynnMall two or three times a week because it has great shopping especially for fashion as well as lots of choice for kids. - Alexandra Makarova

Johanna Prinsloo immigrated from South Africa six months ago to live with her daughter in Titirangi. She was shopping with her four-year-old grandson Armin Schreiner and was full of praise for LynnMall.

Reading has also revealed more crowd-pleasers, albeit provisionally. They include ‘The Hunger Games: Mocking Jay Part 2’,’ The Martian’ starring Matt Damon, ’In the Heart of the Sea’ which tells the gripping story of the real-life maritime disaster that inspired ‘Moby Dick’ and ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’.

It’s a very comfortable and usable mall and I think the food court is fabulous. I’m really looking forward to the cinema opening. - Johanna Prinsloo
