Innovative Materials Summary volume 4 2022 Innovative Materials is an interactive, digital magazine about new and/or innovative applied materials in civil engineering sector, construction, architecture and design.

Microplastics are an environmental problem. They are minute, sometimes even microscopic particles, often origina ting from the wear and tear of plastic products, such as synthe tic clothing. But microplastics are also a raw material for all kinds of products. Scientists think they have found an alterna tive for this; based on silk.

Silk: an alternative to microplastics

A new wood-based cellulose aerogels insulation material, appears to offer as good or even better thermal performance than ordinary plastic-based insulation materials, according to an article recently published in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces.

Wind turbines are getting bigger and bigger. A height of 150 meters or more is no exception. At the same time, hurricanes are increasing in strength and frequency due to climate chan ge. To make these turbines more hurricane-resistant, American researchers say they have now found a solution: a combination of choice of materials and software.

Coating itself repairs cracks using sunlight

Embedding thin metal microstructures in glass promises excep tional properties for a range of applications.

Insulation aerogel from wood better than plastic

Researchers at the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology (KRICT) have developed a transparent, protective coating that repairs itself in the event of damage under the influence of sunlight.

‘Magnet recycling pays off’

Magnets are valuable. Although functional magnet recycling methods have been developed in recent years, they are not yet applied in practice and magnets are still melted down into steel scrap. Thanks to scientists that this can and should be done differently.

HiRes Concrete Slab

Building blocks of discarded cooking oil

Nanoparticles can save historic buildings

Australian scientists have developed a new type of building block from used cooking oil, mixed with sulfur and dicyclo pentadiene (DCPD). These are lightweight, durable polymeric building blocks that can be bonded together using a glue-free chemical reaction.

Transparent cellulose film to replace traditional plastic packaging Food packaging is important to protect foodstuffs and prevent waste. However, thin plastic films are difficult to recycle and often end up in the wrong place after use. Researchers now say they have developed a solution to the waste problem of plastic packaging: cellulose. No harmful chemicals are used in the manufacturing process (which was a major drawback of classic cellophane).

The HiRes Concrete Slab is a thin, double-curved concrete slab constructed in such a way that material is applied only where it is structurally needed; exactly where the forces must be dissipated by the shell construction. This approach results in a material saving of 70 percent compared to a standard reinfor ced concrete slab.

Buildings made of porous rock can weather over the years. It is possible to strengthen the stone by impregnating it with nanoparticles.

Scientists have developed a new PET-like plastic that can be easily made from the unusable parts of plants. The plastic is tough, heat resistant and has a good barrier against gases such as oxygen, making it a promising candidate for food packaging.

A team of US scientists has designed an ‘acoustic fabric’, woven with a fiber made from a flexible piezoelectric material. When the fibers are bent, or mechanically deformed, they emit an electrical signal that allows the fabric to convert sound vibrati ons into electrical signals.

A team of from the Swiss research institute Empa developed a water-activated, disposable paper battery.

Recycled glass waste as sand replacement in 3D printing Singapore researchers have developed a way to use recycled glass in 3D printing. It could open the door to both a new destination for waste glass and a more environmentally sustai nable way of building. The results of the study were published early this year in the Journal of Building Engineering.

The GEVEL 2022 trade fair was held in the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht from 31 May to 2 June. This year the organization had cho sen the theme ‘Inception’, derived from the film of the same name from 2010. In this context, the theme of inception had to be understood as ‘beginning, beginning, start’: a first step towards a new era. According to the organizers - just like in the film - it is about the power of the idea. A single idea can change the world and rewrite all the rules.

MAKE IT MATTER is compiled in collaboration with MaterialDistrict (MaterialDistrict.com). In this section new, and/or interesting developments and innovative materials are highlighted.

Every two years, Wienerberger presents the Brick Awards and honors the most creative examples of modern and innovative brick architecture. The company wants to inspire both archi tects and enthusiasts from outside the field to explore new building forms. The tenth edition took place on June 9th

Innovative Materials is distributed among its own subscribers/network, but also through the networks of the partners. This includes organisations like M2i, MaterialDesign, 4TU (a cooperation between the four Technical Universities in the Netherlands), the Bond voor Materialenkennis (material sciences), SIM Flanders, FLAM3D, RVO and Material District.

Innovative Materials, the international version of the Dutch magazine Inno vatieve Materialen, is now available in English. Innovative Materials is an in teractive, digital magazine about new and/or innovatively applied materials.

Innovative Materials provides information on material innovations, or innovative use of materials. The idea is that the ever increasing demands lead to a constant search for better and safer products as well as material and energy savings. Enabling these innovations is crucial, not only to be competitive but also to meet the challenges of enhancing and protecting the environment, like durability, C2C and carbon footprint. By opting for smart, sustainable and innovative materials constructors, engi neers and designers obtain more opportunities to distinguish themselves. As a platform Innovative Materials wants to help to achieve this by connec ting supply and demand.
