SUMMARY INNOVATIVE MATERIALS 3 2022 The environmental impact of wood for construction

A consortium of international parties in the field of construction products has commissioned research into the greenhouse gas balances of wooden construction products, in particular the methodology and principles used and the correctness of both. The research was carried out by consultancy and engineering firm LBP|SIGHT.

Charcoal cooling blanket for fruit and veggie storage

In developing countries, storing agricultural produce is often difficult: heat and drought cause fruits and vegetables to spoil quickly - a problem especially for smallholder farmers who cannot afford refrigeration equipment or have no access to electricity. A ‘cooling blanket’ from Empa’s Laboratory for Biomimetic Membranes and Textiles in St. Gallen could provide a solution.

Disposable masks to make more durable concrete

Disposable Covid masks create an environmental problem. Researchers from the USA have now found a way to put this waste to good use. They incorporated fibers of old masks in a cement mixture to make concrete stronger and more durable.

A paper-thin loudspeaker

Scientists of MIT developed a flexible, thin-film device with the potential to make any surface into a low-power, high-quality audio source. This thin-film loudspeaker produces sound with minimal distortion while using a fraction of the energy required by a traditional loudspeaker.

Red, sustainable asphalt

In the town of Eindhoven, a road was recently constructed of red asphalt with 40 percent recycled asphalt, a material developed by KWS. The sustainable mixture is produced with green gas and supplied and processed under CE certification. Due to the high percentage of recycled asphalt, fewer primary raw materials and less pigment are needed.

SUMMARY INNOVATIVE MATERIALS 3 2022 Custom 3D printed reefs

The rapid decline of coral reefs worldwide has increased the need for exploring interdisciplinary methods for reef restoration. In a paper recently published in the journal Science of the Total Environment, researchers from four Israelian universities highlight a 3D printing method they developed to preserve coral reefs.

Innovative 3D-printing technology for glass microstructures

Researchers at UC Berkeley have developed a new way to 3D-print glass microstructures that is faster and produces objects with higher optical quality, design flexibility and strength. The study is published April 15 in Science.

Choetsu: paper or plastic?

According to the University of Tokyo, for the first time, researchers have found a way to to manipulate relatively durable paper in such a way that it acquires the useful properties of plastic. This can be done easily, cost effectively, and efficiently.

The 2022 JEC Composites Innovation Awards

On April 26 preceding the JEC World 2022 event, 3 - 5 May in Paris, the JEC Group, announced this year’s ten JEC Composites Innovation Award winners. Every year, through its Innovation Awards, JEC Group rewards the best cutting-edge and ingenious projects using composites to their full potential. The goals of this top-level innovation program are to identify, promote, and reward the most innovative composites solutions worldwide.

Bulk raw materials from agro residues one step closer

It is technically and economically possible to market a tradable bio-raw material from agro residues for large-scale use. This was demonstrated by the results of the CAPCOM project, carried out by an international consortium of the agro-industry. Within CAPCOM-NL, a basic raw material in the form of pellets has been developed to enable large-scale use of field and process residues for the production of electricity, heat, liquid fuels, chemicals and materials.

SUMMARY INNOVATIVE MATERIALS 3 2022 World’s first slim Ultra High Performance Fibre Reinforced Concrete lock gates

The existing wooden ebb doors of the Robbengat sea lock, (Lauwersoog, The Netherlands), are at the end of their useful life and have to be replaced. Four years ago, the province of Groningen initiated a procedure, which ultimately resulted in a feasibility study for the construction of ultra-high-performance fibre reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) lock gates.

Self-healing materials for robotics made from ‘jelly’ and salt Researchers of Cambridge University have developed selfhealing, biodegradable, 3D-printed materials that could be used in the development of realistic artificial hands and other soft robotics applications. The new materials are able to sense strain, temperature and humidity.

On the way towards fully automated steel analysis

To ensure that steel delivers what it promises, its microstructure is analyzed in detail to detect weak points during early stages. Today, this is largely done via visual inspection. Component manufacturers have long desired an automated image analysis method. In a cooperative project, the Fraunhofer IWM has now developed such a method based on neural networks.

Reused composite for infrastructure applications

With regards to recycling, thermoset composites are considered to be ‘difficult’ plastics. End-of-Life composites cannot be separated into their original components. The Professorship for Polymer Engineering at Windesheim University of Applied Sciences has developed a method that allows End-of-Life thermosetting composites to be reused in new products, including for use in the infrastructure sector.

Environmentally friendly filtration systems made of waste materials and shrimps Scientists have developed a new thin-film composite membrane from shrimp shells, plant extracts and recycled plastic.

SUMMARY INNOVATIVE MATERIALS 3 2022 Hydrogen hose that can repair its own cracks

American researchers have developed a self-repairing hose to dispense hydrogen. A more durable hose for pumping hydrogen could help lower the cost of a sustainable fuel (hydrogen) for buses, trucks and heavy equipment.

MAKE IT MATTER MAKE IT MATTER is compiled in collaboration with MaterialDistrict (MaterialDistrict.com). In this section new, and/or interesting developments and innovative materials are highlighted.

Innovative Materials, the international version of the Dutch magazine Innovatieve Materialen, is now available in English. Innovative Materials is an interactive, digital magazine about new and/or innovatively applied materials. Innovative Materials provides information on material innovations, or innovative use of materials. The idea is that the ever increasing demands lead to a constant search for better and safer products as well as material and energy savings. Enabling these innovations is crucial, not only to be competitive but also to meet the challenges of enhancing and protecting the environment, like durability, C2C and carbon footprint. By opting for smart, sustainable and innovative materials constructors, engineers and designers obtain more opportunities to distinguish themselves. As a platform Innovative Materials wants to help to achieve this by connecting supply and demand. Innovative Materials is distributed among its own subscribers/network, but also through the networks of the partners. This includes organisations like M2i, MaterialDesign, 4TU (a cooperation between the four Technical Universities in the Netherlands), the Bond voor Materialenkennis (material sciences), SIM Flanders, FLAM3D, RVO and Material District.
