Welcome to the 3rd Close It Summit: DEMAND MORE Three years ago we held the first Close It Summit, here at The Capital Hilton in Washington, DC. Since then, the conversation around demand driven models, competencies and “closing the skills gap” has matured tremendously, yet, we are still in the infancy of a national/international change agenda. Just last week I was involved in the Lumina Foundation’s Connecting Credentials Summit. The event was very rewarding and included many thought leaders that are here with us at Close It. Critical priorities identified by leaders at the Connecting Credentials Summit included: employer buy in, employer adoption of credentials, creating a common language around credentials, strengthening measurement of competencies and creating collaborative employer models that are new and scalable, while not creating market confusion. So, why is Close It 2015’s theme DEMAND MORE? Because we must demand more. Not only from the demand side (employers), but from policymakers (State and Federal), educators, industry associations, foundations and young adults (who have a critical voice in the change agenda). Last week I received an email from Bob, based in Virginia. He has incredible experience in IT, with multiple certifications. He asked for our help. He said, “I am getting passed up because I do not have the “right” degree, am either overqualified or under-qualified, because I do not have the “right” experience, or because I have too many employment gaps. I have incredibly high WorkKeys® scores but no employers are using these, only the workforce center. Is there anyone I can talk to, programs that I can apply to, or anything else I can do (like online training via a MOOC or Khan Academy) to take that last step and get hired? The workforce development offices here seem to think I’m crazy for wanting to do this - mostly all that they seem to be able to do is talk about going back to school and hand out financial aid applications. They seem to short-circuit if you go off-script.” Here’s to demanding more….for Bob and so many others like him.

I+E Catalysts

Introducing Innovate+Educate’s Inaugural Catalysts Innovate+Educate is pleased to announce their I+E Catalysts program, bringing a critical young adult voice to the work of Innovate+Educate to support, inform and advance the national movement to competency-based education and employment. It has been widely reported that over 50% of recent college graduates are either underemployed or unemployed. And what about those young adults that can’t afford to go to college? The I+E catalysts program represents Innovate+Educate’s commitment to and reliance on the next generation to solve the critical issues we face in the global workforce economy. One of the key responsibilities of the catalysts is for them to bring their own unique voice to the conversation, pushing us to question our assumptions, look at our work from a different perspective and remind us of our own journey through the world of work. We are proud to introduce our inaugural catalysts, James Alexander and Derek Williams. You will hear from them directly during the plenary session, ‘Our View’ and learn more about the realities they face when navigating the world of education and work as a young adult. Wednesday, Presidential Ballroom, 4:30PM. We encourage you to talk with them throughout the event and follow them on social media.

James Alexander @Jamezwalexander LinkedIn: Jamezwalexander

James Alexander (21) is I+E’s first Catalyst Fellow. An ardent DIYer, Social Entrepreneur and Innovator, James is devoted to the success of the I+E Catalyst program and its associates. His empathy, insight and aptitude for innovative problem solving and his innate ability to engage and inspire others in creating meaningful change has made him an essential part of I+E. James is hacking together an education revolved around computer science, technology, design/ aesthetics and business while championing the social cause for influencing change for education pathways to employment in the new corporate world. Informed by his circumstantial experiences while pursuing a traditional degree, James is shaping his tenets for experiential competency-based learning and employment: prescribing value vs. money, expanding one’s horizons, the value of inferiority complex, gaining from resistance and pain, training for failure and advancing through trial and error. Concurrently, James is assisting with back-office technical needs for a startup retail commerce venture as well as volunteering for an insurgent political campaign for city council in Charlotte, NC. 10

Kellogg Foundation national youth board, the New Options Project (NOP) which focuses on finding and advancing employment pathways for young people. Derek saw a need for authentic youth voice. The ACT NCRC is a proven predictor of workplace success. Ask for it. ®

Employers are finding it easier to match employees to jobs, based on verified skill levels. Powered by ACT WorkKeys® assessments, the ACT National Career Readiness CertificateTM (ACT NCRC) is a national credential that gives you concrete evidence of foundational workplace skills an individual has achieved— making it easier to match the skills an applicant has with the skills you need. The ACT NCRC can also help to identify skills gaps, training needs, and promotion opportunities for your current employees—reducing turnover and increasing productivity in the process. When you ask for the ACT NCRC, you’re strengthening your business and supporting economic development in your community. Learn more at act.org/certificate.
