The 13th edition of The Business Booster
Get ready to contribute your expertise, spark new ideas, and collaborate –together we make the clean energy transition a reality!
“In 2025, InnoEnergy’s clean tech ecosystem convenes at The Business Booster to showcase ambition in action. This is where vision hardens into ventures and prototypes become industry-shaping businesses. The TBB has established itself over the last decade as the marketplace where the future of energy and industry takes shape, where strategic partnerships and business deals between innovators, investors and industry are transacted. Our new branding, Inno, captures it. Impact and growth keep on being what glues the InnoEnergy ecosystem together. ”
Diego Pavia CEO, InnoEnergy
“The clean energy transition is no longer a distant vision; it’s a scaling reality. From gigafactories and green steel to wave power and next-gen storage, InnoEnergy’s ecosystem is de-risking our portfolio and delivering. At The Business Booster, we showcase tech reshaping industry, strengthening energy sovereignty, and accelerating growth across Europe and beyond. The mandate now: scale faster— together—for a resilient, prosperous, clean energy economy. ”
Elena Bou Innovation Director, InnoEnergy
“For the last five years, policy has been the driving force behind climate and sustainability. Not any more: now it is technology. AI, of course, but also materials science, electrochemistry, biological and other applied sciences. At the same time, the innovations of the past two decades are reaching industrial scale. The solar PV industry can produce enough panels to replace 5% of fossil power each year. One car in two sold in China is electric. Enough batteries can be manufactured each year to store over an hour of global power demand. We need to be ready, not just as technologists, but as society. ”
Michael Liebreich Managing Partner, EcoPragma Capital CEO, Liebreich Associates
Keynote speaker at TBB 2025
Welcome to TBB: Where clean tech deals get done!
Over the past decades, the energy that powers how we make, move, and heat has steadily shifted from fossil fuels to electricity, establishing electrification as the backbone of the energy transition. This progress has been driven by the rapid deployment of clean technologies such as solar, hydro, wind, batteries, and electric vehicles, alongside a transformation of the grid. These advances have scaled faster than anyone could have predicted, but that was just the first wave, and it has changed everything.
To reach net zero, safeguard our economies, and build global resilience, we must now enter the next phase: Electrification 2.0 - this time on an industrial scale.
At The Business Booster (TBB), you will witness the technologies that will make this possible. From clean hydrogen and large-scale storage to grid innovations, low-carbon industrial processes, and sustainable mobility solutions, our exhibitors are contributing to the transformation of Europe’s energy system, sector by sector.
Energy generation
CorPower Ocean has advanced ocean energy technology and begun rolling out wave energy farms, enabling a new kind of renewable energy from ocean waves. The UK government has also appointed CorPower Ocean to the UK Marine Energy Taskforce to help scale wave and tidal energy by developing a strategic roadmap. The signal is clear: wave energy technology is ready to unlock the 500 GW global opportunity, and countries are demanding it.
Grid and infrastructure
The European power grid is rapidly changing towards a system dominated by distributed renewable resources. To accommodate both conventional generation and RES in the system, the EU commission estimates it to be necessary to invest €584 billion by 2030. To do this more efficiently, we must make the system’s flexibility available. Bamboo Energy and Suena are both software companies that, in different ways, aggregate and make flexible resources available to the European energy sector. Through successfully balancing markets, both companies are experiencing significant growth.
Energy storage
There is an immediate need for short-term grid flexibility and stability. This is being addressed through InnoEnergy’s Repono, which is set to contribute a substantial portion of the estimated 1,000 GWh of additional storage capacity needed for the European Grid. At the same time, Skeleton’s ultra capacitors have proven an application as a ‘rapid response’ measure for frequency disturbances in transmission systems. There is also increasing interest in long-duration energy storage (LDES) to support low generation over more extended periods. Mine Storage, which is developing pumped hydro in abandoned mines, was recently granted €20 million from the Innovation Fund for its plant in Sweden.
The European automotive industry is far from giving up its plans for transitioning to Electric Vehicles, which is manifested in a host of new EV models entering the market in 2025 and 2026. InnoEnergy’s cell manufacturer Verkor is on the verge of starting production of the first 16 GWh/a in northern France to supply its major shareholder, Renault, with traction batteries for their EV models.
Energy consumption
One of the agriculture industry’s most significant challenges is switching to low-emission fertilisers. NitroCapt ’s technology is working with a 0.66 kWh/kg N theoretical minimum energy consumption, significantly lower than the Haber-Bosch process of approximately 7.6 kWh/ kg N. This year, NitroCapt won the prestigious Food Planet Prize 2025 and secured key partnerships with Axfood, Dafgårds, Felleskjøpet Agri, and VIVESCIA – strong testaments to the advancements of its innovative and climatefriendly production of mineral nitrogen fertiliser.
AI continues to make exponential leaps, but the key to maximising its potential is efficient energy use. Gradis is at the forefront of leveraging AI to solve energy challenges. A recent example is their IT concept for an advanced lighting management system for TAURON, a leading Polish energy group. The system will allow for 97% faster and up to 81% more energy-efficient photometric conversions.
Another example is Tokwise, which uses AI to enable renewable energy companies to optimise their portfolios continuously. By autonomously analysing real-time market and grid data to execute coordinated trading strategies across multiple markets, it enhances efficiency and manages risk.
To address the challenge of decarbonising hardto-abate industries, the steel industry has made significant progress through our company builder, GravitHy, with the closing of its €60 million round. With this funding it will continue to secure key contracts and permits, complete engineering, and attract key talent.
New investments
While our existing portfolio has made important progress with our and our ecosystem’s support, we have also invested in new earlystage companies. Kore Metals is pioneering sustainable strategic metals. Through its electrochemical process, it reduces emissions by up to 5 times and produces silicon from low-value feedstock. This innovation is a game-changer in the strategic metals industry that otherwise heavily relies on fossil fuels.
Another example is the TUM and MIT spin-off, Qkera. They pioneer next-generation ceramic electrolytes for Li-Ion batteries that hold more energy, charge faster, and fundamentally increase safety.
What it takes to win
The progress of our portfolio companies shows their essential role in pushing the energy transition forward. The clean energy transition is our greatest opportunity to co-invest, co-build, and co-lead. Through the InnoEnergy ecosystem, we encourage collaboration, unlocking the full potential of electrification and the complementary solutions needed to power energy-intensive industries.
This is not just about climate. It is about competitiveness, sovereignty, and shared security. For the planet. For profit. For people. For real.
Let’s make Electrification 2.0 a collective leap forward!

15 years of fostering innovation for growth and decarbonisation
InnoEnergy is industrialising clean tech innovation to enable and grow a global net zero economy. Active in Europe and the US, we invest in early-stage start-ups and the current and future workforce, building resilient clean tech value chains that drive sustainable economic growth. Through our ecosystem – with 1,400 partners, including 39 shareholders, spanning industry, finance, public policy, and academia – we scale the energy transition at speed.
In support of the EU’s climate and industrial goals, InnoEnergy leads industrial alliances in batteries and solar, and accelerates the uptake of green hydrogen. Pinpointing market gaps, InnoEnergy launches new industrial champions, in sectors including batteries, steel, and fertilisers.
Since 2010, InnoEnergy has supported 540+ companies, helping to grow 4 into industrial unicorns. These companies have raised more than €34 billion to date, created over 47,000 jobs, and are on track to generate €110 billion in revenue and reduce 2.3 gigatons of CO2e by 2030. Currently, InnoEnergy is invested in 160+ start-ups and scaleups.
InnoEnergy was established in 2010 by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), a body of the European Union, as one of its first Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KIC). In 2025, the EIT and InnoEnergy entered into a new partnership, where they will continue collaborating on specific projects.
Creating new markets in Europe and beyond
Unlike mature industries, rapidly developing clean tech industries require a holistic approach in order to succeed. Collaboration across the value chain – from upstream to downstream – is essential. We drive systemic industrial transformation in the battery, solar PV, and green hydrogen value chains.
With a mandate from the European Commission, InnoEnergy leads industrial alliances in batteries and solar, building resilient and sustainable supply chains to reindustrialise Europe. To accelerate the uptake of low-carbon hydrogen projects, InnoEnergy leads its own initiative.
The Clean Industrial Deal underscores that decarbonisation and long-term economic growth go hand in hand. However, placing clean tech at the core of Europe’s industrial strategy also calls for structural measures, including production support, to help battery manufacturers and the broader clean tech sector scale up successfully. The time is now to take action. This is essential not only for transforming the automotive and energy sectors but also for securing Europe’s global competitiveness.
Thore Sekkenes European Battery Alliance (EBA) Manager, InnoEnergy
Driving growth in one of Europe’s most strategic new sectors
EBA, launched by the European Commission in 2017, has become a cornerstone of Europe’s clean industrial strategy. With a projected market value of €500 billion by 2030 and the potential to create up to 1.5 million jobs, the battery sector represents not only a critical enabler of the energy transition but also a strategic industrial opportunity.
Managed by InnoEnergy, the industrial development programme of the EBA has grown into a powerful ecosystem of over 800 stakeholders spanning the entire battery value chain—from mining to recycling. This project- driven network has laid the foundations for a competitive, sustainable battery industry in Europe.
Yet, the playing field has shifted. After years of steady progress, Europe’s battery industry now faces increasing pressure from heavily subsidised industrial ecosystems in other regions. In particular, China’s battery dominance results from a decade-long, state-backed strategy—combining control over critical minerals, global expansion, and massive manufacturing capacity, challenging Europe’s ability to scale.
1,000GWh of sustainable and competitive batteries made in Europe by 2030
However, Europe has its own strengths, including regulatory stability, long-term strategic planning, and a strong industrial foundation. Europeanmade batteries also lead on sustainability, circularity, and traceability—attributes increasingly demanded by global markets and aligned with Europe’s long-term vision. By upholding these principles and fostering industry consolidation, the EBA aims to ensure that Europe remains competitive in the global market while effectively addressing internal and external challenges.

Reflecting on the European Commission’s support for the solar industry, Kerstin Jorna remarked ESIA’s work is “a game-changer in the way the European Union is functioning, as its Governments and the European Commission work together as an executive on the business case for the industry.
Kerstin Jorna Director-General, European Commission, DG GROW
Reshoring solar PV production in Europe
ESIA aims to accelerate solar PV deployment in the EU by scaling up to 30 GW of annual solar PV manufacturing capacity in Europe in 2025, facilitating investment, de-risking sector acceleration, and supporting Europe’s decarbonisation targets.
Launched by the European Commission in 2022, InnoEnergy is leading the alliance as its Secretariat. SolarPower Europe and the European Solar Manufacturing Council are on the alliance’s steering committee.
To deliver the EU Solar Strategy objectives, the alliance will re-develop, de-risk, and accelerate the PV industry in Europe across all value chain segments. This will create a competitive position in the context of booming demand for solar PV in Europe and globally.
The Alliance’s main focus is on:
The financing of European solar PV manufacturing projects, ensuring a sustainable level playing field. Swift implementation of ecodesign requirements for PV systems and products.
Anticipating the skills requirements of this new industry with the start of the European Solar PV Industry Alliance Academy.

Innovation in Times of Crisis
an interview with Téma Benhalima Bouville, Group Innovation Director at ENGIE
In times of disruption, innovation reveals its true power—not only as a tool for resilience but as a catalyst for creativity and opportunity. At ENGIE, this mindset is embodied by leaders who view constraints as springboards for transformation. We spoke with Téma Benhalima Bouville to explore how innovation thrives in crisis contexts and unlocks unexpected value.
How can innovation become a lever for opportunity and creativity in a crisis?
Crises often bring constraints— market uncertainty, misaligned stakeholders, and supply chain disruptions. Innovation helps us rethink how we operate, enabling us to bypass obstacles or tackle them head-on with unconventional solutions. It’s about designing new pathways to deliver value across the supply and value chains.
Can you share concrete examples where crisis stimulated innovation at ENGIE?
One example is Onset Energy, a digital platform designed to accelerate the green hydrogen market kickoff by providing a blend of low-carbon fuels for the shipping and logistics service providers. Green hydrogen, while promising, faces a “chicken-and-egg” dilemma: stakeholders are interested but still reluctant due to a lack of competitiveness. Onset Energy
offers a flexible business model that allows clients to commit to a mix of low-carbon fuels, reducing risk while supporting green hydrogen adoption.
Another case is Verta BioEnergy in the Philippines, where the urgency to decarbonize oil-fired energy led to a creative solution. Biomass was scarce, but the country had abundant chicken farming. ENGIE’s venture studio in
Singapore launched a startup that transforms chicken manure into solid biomass compatible with existing boilers. This innovation turned agricultural waste into a viable energy source, demonstrating how local constraints can inspire breakthrough circular solutions.
What are the key ingredients for fostering an agile and creative innovation culture during uncertainty?
In uncertain times, long-term investments in research become unreliable. Success lies in focusing on immediate business needs and growth opportunities that are within reach of operational teams. Innovation must be grounded in addressing real problems and needs. Timeboxing is also essential—starting from a clear need and delivering solutions quickly to seize opportunities and maintain market momentum.
At ENGIE, innovation is not just about technology—it’s about mindset. By embracing constraints and responding with agility, ENGIE transforms challenges into opportunities. Whether through new business models or resourceful use of local materials, the company demonstrates that creativity flourishes when guided by purpose and urgency. In times of crisis, innovation becomes not only a lever for survival but a driver of meaningful change and growth.

Prepare your biomass and increase your biogas production
The need
The world needs cleaner sources of energy. One way to achieve this is to help existing biogas plants boost their biogas production. This can be achieved through optimal preparation of input streams.
The solution
Methaplanet does not build more biogas plants. Instead, it optimises existing plants by supplying a patented energy pellet production unit – the Maxximizer. By adding a Maxximizer to installations, biogas plants can start producing their own high-yield energy pellets immediately. This generates much more biogas per ton input materials, and optimises the production of biogas.
Value proposition
• Produces own energy pellets for higher performance of existing biogas plants.
• Much more revenue per ton input.
• Fast ROI: about 3 years on average.
• Biogas production maximised.
• Helps to make business operations circular.
• Contributes to a cleaner world.

Renewable gas unit of 4,2MWgas to be erected for tissue producer Sofidel (Sweden) replacing fossil LPG for tissue drying. Commissioned in 2023.
Making it possible to reach below net-zero
The need
When addressing the need for industrial-sized cogeneration or combined heat and power (CHP) from solid biomass, today's paradigm is either to build large-scale power plants (larger than 10 MWe) using steam turbine CHP technology, or to burn the feedstock in a boiler, which only produces heat.
The solution
Meva Energy's solution is to enable power and heat production in the range below the commercial feasibility of steam turbine technology. The plant is based on biomass gasification and, in particular, on the utilisation of fine fraction feedstock. The technology is suitable for industrial application, and can utilise feedstock residue from wood-based manufacturing or agriculture to create a local, circular energy system with minimised transportation and distribution losses.
Value proposition
• Acceptance of fine fraction, low-cost feedstock.
• Highly controllable power source able to balance power grids due to the intermittence of solar and heat.
• Low cost, high-efficiency production of renewable, decentralised power and heat.
• Production of even gas quality with high energetic content, suitable for a high efficiency lean-burn gas engine.
• Relatively non-complex system layout, low pressure and temperature.

The first liquid inorganic hydrogen carrier that makes hydrogen easy to deliver
The need
Hydrogen is a clean alternative to fossil fuels. However, it is difficult to transport and store. It requires either very high pressure, or very low temperatures, and is also limited by strict regulations. A new way of transporting and storing the promising energy carrier needs to be deployed.
The solution
Hydrosyl is the first liquid inorganic hydrogen carrier that can transport and store the molecule at ambient temperature and pressure, via the existing infrastructures and for long periods of time. In addition, there's energy input needed at the moment of unloading the hydrogen from the carrier, so the energy can be transported from wherever it's available. This carrier is environmentally-friendly, as Hydrosil is silicon-based, amounting to the first completely zero-carbon value chain.
Value proposition
• Liquid hydrogen carrier, stable at ambient temperature and pressure.
• Non-organic (silicon-based).
• High hydrogen density (8.7% by weight).
• Possible to transport and store it in the existing infrastructures (similar to gasoil on handling).
• Recommended for: massive amounts of hydrogen, long-distance transport.
• Release process with no energy input required.

Next-gen battery architectures are set to make Li-ion batteries safer, more powerful and cost-effective – nonetheless, these require so-called solid electrolytes, where the trade-off is between high-performing but expensive and brittle oxide ceramics or more reactive, softer and cheaper polymer and sulfide electrolytes.
The solution
As a TUM and MIT spinoff, Qkera has been working on solving the production challenges of oxide ceramic electrolytes for over 6 years. With a breakthrough chemical synthesis approach, they are able to produce thin and flexible sheets of a widely field-tested oxide ceramic electrolyte as a drop-in product. This material is regarded as the most promising candidate for next-gen batteries – if the conventional ceramic synthesis approach is avoided, which is incompatible with current battery manufacturing lines and not scalable.
Value proposition
Qkera can offer flexible and ionically conductive oxide ceramic layers that are deposited on polymer electrolytes and separators – thus solving interfacial problems towards the cathode and enabling a powerful barrier for high-energy anodes. These sheets can be processed in roll-to-roll lines like other battery materials but offer mechanical robustness, low resistances, scalability, low cost and can be integrated with different electrode materials, serving as a platform approach to cater to the diverse future of next-gen battery designs.

Efficient high temperature heat pump for industrial applications
The need
Heat production up to 200°C in industry is responsible for ~5% of global energy consumption - for which over 90% fossil fuels are still used today. High-temperature heat pumps that can provide heat up to 200°C sustainably using waste heat are therefore urgently needed.
The solution
ecop's rotation heat pump technology is based on a pure gas process that enables industrial companies to convert their heat production up to 200°C from natural gas to green electricity. In contrast to conventional heat pumps, the heat pump technology does not use F-gases or flammable refrigerants. As ecop's rotation heat pump can also achieve very high temperature lifts with high efficiency, it is an optimal solution for many applications in industry, district heating and geothermal energy.
Value proposition
• Capable of attaining -30°C - 200°C heat efficiently over the whole temperature range, with long-term stability and temperature lift of up to 100K.
• High COP even at lifts up to 100K.
• Outstanding cooling properties. Ideal if the rotation heat pump is used for cold- and heat production at the same time. Cold and heat can often be provided with little more electrical energy than is needed for the chillers anyway. Example: datacenter, dairy industry, etc.
• Practically no risk to the environment in contrast to other technologies (toxic and poisonous working media etc.).

Skeleton Tech. Grid-scale high-power energy storage
2x higher power density and a 50% smaller footprint
Skeleton offers a top-end supercapacitor for the grid based on its patented electrode material, Curved Graphene. Compared to the competition, the Skeleton supercapacitor has a small footprint and high power density.
As more of the generation in the grid comes from solar and wind instead of large, heavy rotating generators in fossil power plants, the inertia in the systems decreases. The consequence is a grid that is more sensitive to short disturbances. A way to stabilise the grid is to deploy high-speed energy storage systems. An alternative to batteries is supercapacitors, which can handle extremely high powers (fast charge/discharge) and last for 100 of thousands of cycles.
Skeleton currently produces in Estonia and Germany and is expanding with new production in Germany and France. Apart from the market for grid support, Skeleton is targeting all applications where fast electric energy recovery or multiple quick power bursts are in demand. This can be Kinteic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS) in vehicles, evening out power demand in datacentres, or ICE engine start systems.
“InnoEnergy has been an extremely valuable strategic partner for Skeleton Technologies and its impact goes way beyond being an investor. InnoEnergy has been instrumental in our business development, and we have been closely collaborating with InnoEnergy’s offices – whether in Scandinavia, Poland, Germany or France – to increase our outreach to local companies. The InnoEnergy team is particularly active in matchmaking with businesses and investors, and in organising events that will benefit all companies in their portfolio. When you are part of InnoEnergy, you are part of a wide community and network, so you can easily access leading industrial companies in Europe. ”

Hysun. Delivering the low-cost renewable hydrogen revolution
100% clean, off-grid, and costcompetitive green hydrogen
Hysun’s competitive advantage lies in its unique photothermo-catalysis process, which produces 100% clean hydrogen with zero emissions, unlike traditional electrolysis methods, which depend on grid electricity and are only up to 60% clean. Hysun’s system supports on-off transitions and operates off-grid, reducing capex and opex. It uses only 22l of water per kg of hydrogen (vs. 30l in electrolysis) and relies on abundant, non-conflict metals instead of costly platinum group elements.
Hysun’s compact footprint—just 12,000 m² for an 18 kg/h plant vs. 38,000 m² for electrolysis—enhances deployment flexibility. It offers a scalable, cost-efficient solution with a target pricing of €2-3/kg.
Targeting the fast-growing green hydrogen market, Hysun provides flexible business models: turnkey delivery and transfer (BOOT) and long-term hydrogen sales (HPA). The company aims to build 20 plants by 2030 (15,000 tons/year), expanding to 90 by 2040 (1.5 million tons/year).
Hysun is commissioning its R&D prototype and advancing from TRL 4 to TRL 5. This stage focuses on real-world validation, paving the way for industrial deployment and strategic partnerships.
“InnoEnergy has been a key enabler of our progress. Few players in the industry are willing to fund early-stage disruptive technologies, even though such innovation is essential to driving meaningful change in the fight against climate change. Beyond their early commitment, they bring exceptional professionalism, rigorous processes, and provide startups with access to teams and infrastructure rarely within reach at this stage. This support accelerates professionalisation, improves efficiency and competitiveness, and makes companies far more attractive to future investors. InnoEnergy is a true catalyst for impactful decarbonisation in industrial sectors. ”
Tatiana López Co-Founder and CEO, Hysun
