The Development of Kalamkari Sarees Kalamkari sarees are recognised around the world for their elegance and long history, which dates back to the Middle Ages. A Persian term made up of two words is called Pen Kalamkari Sarees. "Kalam" signifies pen, and "kari" denotes workmanship or art.

Literally, this means "drawing with a pen." In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Kalamkari is hand-painted or block-printed artwork on cotton fabric, but it originates from the Mughal era. The Sasani era in Iran is when the Kalamkari art first appeared.
