Thishandbookisaimedmainlyatnewstudents,tohelpyoutosettleinquicklybyexplaininghowtheschool works,andwhotospeaktoifyouhaveanyproblems.Itisalsousefulforcurrent students,asthemostupto dateguidetotheroutinesandregulationsinplace.

Thishandbooktellsyouabouttheschoolday:abouttimings,meals,boarding,behaviouretc.-aswellas containinglotsofusefulinformationsuchasstafflists,buildingmapsandschoolrules.

However,itisalsoaverybusyschool,andsoyoumayfindeverythingthathappenshereabitdaunting,and theflowofinformationmayseemhuge!Donʼtworry! Forboarders,yourHouseisyourhomefromhomewithintheschoolduringtermtime.Wewant youtofeel comfortableandsafeinyourboardinghouse-dobringpicturesandposterswithwhichtoʻpersonaliseʼyour space.Youarewelcometouseyourown(named)bedding(duvetcover,pillowcases)too.Thereisnoschool uniform,sopleasebringcomfortablecasualclothestowear-butpleasebearinmindthatstoragespaceis limitedandwhatcomestoschool,eventuallyhastogobackhome!

EachstudentatThePurcellSchoolisa memberofoneofthreeHouses:

EachHouseisundertheoverallpastoralsupervisionofaHouseparent,assistedbyresidentAssistant Houseparentsand/oraDayMatronandResidentAssistantGraduate.Allthesestaffareheretosupportyou andwillbekeentogettoknowyou.Ifyouareaboardingstudent,youwillhaveaBoardingMentorfrom withinthehousepastoralteam:yourmentorwillmeetwithyouregularly,willhelpyouorganiseyour commitmentsandsupportyouinsettingtermlytargets,enablingyoutoreflectonyourpersonal development.

AllstudentsalsohaveaTutorwhoseesyoufortwoorthreeTutorialperiodseachweekandisresponsiblefor monitoringyouracademicprogressandbalanceofcommitmentsandpromotingyourwelfare.

Inordertohelptheschooltokeepeveryonesafe,pleasedonotinviteanyoneintotheschoolwithout checkingwithanadultfirst.

ChildProtection

TheSchoolworkshardtokeepallstudents safeandtocreateanenvironmentwheretheyfeelsecureenough todiscusstheirconcerns. TheSchooltrainsallstafftorecognisewhenchildrenareinneedofhelp.Ifyouhave anyconcernsaboutthebehaviourofanyadultorotherstudent,youmusttellsomeoneimmediately.Thebest peopletotellareMrSzafranski,MrsMitchell,MrBurns,MsShah,MsWhitty,MrHoskinsorMrBambrough

Therearepostersallaroundtheschoolwhichexplainhowtocontacttheabovestaff,whoareallpartofthe Safeguardingteam,aswellthemedicalteam,schoolcounsellor,independentlistenerandothersourcesof pastoralsupport.However,ALL adultsintheschoolarecommittedtoyourwellbeingandwelfare -andallwill directyoutothebestsourceofsupportforyourindividualneed.

TheSchoolHealthCentreisrunduringtheday(8.30am-4.30pm,Mon-Fri)bytheSchoolNurse. Aer4.30pm, Mon-Thursandatweekends,NurseCarolMorganisavailabletosupportstudentmedicalcare,healthand emotionalwellbeing.

EmergencyContact

Intheeventofillnessorinjuryeveryeffortwillbemadetocontactyourparentsorguardian.Untilyour

parent/guardianiscontacted,theSchoolwilltakeanyactionrequiredinyourbestinterests.Manyofthe SchoolstaffaretrainedEmergencyFirstAidersandintheeventofanaccident,appropriateFirstAidwillbe given.

IntheeventofaDaystudentbecomingunwellandrequiringtobesenthome,parentsarecontacted immediatelyandrequestedtocollecttheirson/daughterassoonaspossible.Studentsarecaredforinthe SchoolHealthCentreuntilparentsarrive.

YoumustnotgohomeillwithouttheauthorisationoftheMedicalStaff,yourHouseparents,and informingtheSchoolOffice(duringtheschoolday).

Physiotherapy

Ourvisitingphysiotherapist,DrSarahUpjohn,attendstheHealthCentreonWednesdays.Anystudentmay requestanappointmentwithherthroughtheSchoolNurse

Counselling

OurCounsellor,MsNickyMorris,worksfromtheHealthCentreonfourdayseachweek.Anystudentmay requestanappointmentwithherviatheHealthCentreorbycontactingherdirectly.

Medication

ItistheSchoolʼspolicythatstudentsdonottakemedicationwithoutsupervision.Nostudentisallowedtobe inpossessionofprescribedorover-the-countermedicationswithoutpriorassessmentbytheMedicalTeam. Exceptionsareasthmainhalersandepipensforsevereallergies.

Ifneeded,yourparentsshouldsupplytheSchoolwithaspare,namedinhaler/epipenwhichwillthenbestored inaknown,accessibleplaceincaseofanemergency,orforSchooltrips.

TheMedicalTeamarepermittedtoadministersomeover-the-countermedicationsonatemporarybasis. Somemembersoftheteaching/musicstaff/houseparentsareauthorisedtogivesimpleanalgesia(painrelief likeparacetamol)andcoughandthroatremedies.

Pleasenotethatdietarysupplements(suchaswheypowder,creatine,proteinpowders)andenergy drinksareNOTallowedinschoolunlesswithspecificGPrecommendationandsupervision.

B5.Catering

TheSchoolprovidesafullcateringserviceinassociationwithIFGIndependent.We encouragestudentstoeat ahealthyandbalanceddiet.Themenusarepublishedeachweekonthecateringnoticeboards.Vegetarian andveganoptionsarealwaysavailable.Studentswithspecialdietaryrequirementsarecateredfor.

Thecateringstaffprovideawidechoiceoffood,sothereshouldalwaysbesomethingyoulike. Youcanaskto trysomethingifyouarenotsureyoulikeit.

Ifyouhaveanyparticulardietaryneedsorallergies,youshouldtalkfirsttotheSchoolNursewhowill liaisewiththeChef.Pleasenotethatweareanut-freeschool;pleaseavoidbringingnutsornutproducts intoschoolwithyouassomestudentsandstaffhavesignificantallergiesandthisputsthematrisk.

Boardersareprovidedwithbreakfast,lunchandsuppersixdaysaweek,withmid-morningandtea-time snacksduringtheweek.OnSundays,brunchisserveduntil12.30pmandsupperisservedat5.45pm.

Introduction

Theimperativeofsafeguarding,asoutlinedinKCSIESeptember2024,andappliedthroughThePurcell SchoolʼsSafeguardingandChildProtectionPolicy,underpinsourentireapproachtoboarding.Boardinghouse teamsunderstandtheyhaveaʻdutyofcareʼtosafeguardandpromotethewelfareofallstudents,andtowork inpartnershipwithstudents,staff,parents,widerpastoralteamsandexternalagencies,asappropriate,tobest fulfilthisdutyofcareandtoensurethewellbeingandpersonaldevelopmentofeachindividualstudent.

ThestrongpastoralframeworkatThePurcellSchoolprovidesthefoundationforstudentstofulfiltheir potential,recogniseanddeveloptheirstrengthsindifferentareasoftheirlivesandflourishinthebeliefthat theyarevaluedandrespected.

Atalltimes,courtesy,respectandconsiderationtowardsfellowstudents,andtowardsallmembersofthe adultstaffteamsisexpected.Deliberateunkindness,rudenessanddisrespectisneveracceptable.House sanctionswillgenerallyinvolveʻpayingbackʼinsomeway,suchastidyingupcommunalareas,oralossof privileges,suchasbeingaskedtogotobedearlier,orbeingconfinedtotheschoolcampus.

E1.Principlesandexpectations

● ThePurcellSchoolencouragesthegoodbehaviourofitsstudentsatalltimes.Theschoolattaches greatimportancetocourtesy,integrity,goodmanners,gooddisciplineandrespectfortheneedsof others.

TheSchoolRules(seeAppendix1)andtheschoolʼsAnti-BullyingPolicymakeclearourexpectationsin thisregard.

● Theguidingprincipleisthattheschooltrustsstudentstoknowhowtobehaveandtoactatalltimesin theirownbestinterestsandthoseofthewholeschoolcommunity.Onlywhenstudentsbreachthis trustwillsanctionsberequired.

● Whensanctionsareunavoidable,studentsandparentshavetherighttoexpecttheschooltoapply thispolicyfairly.However,thisdoesnotmeanthatsanctionswillinvariablybethesameforeach offence,astheremaybedifferingcircumstanceswhichmaybetakenintoaccount.Inotherwords, everyincidentwillbeviewedonitsownmerits,usingthispolicyasguidance.

● ThePurcellSchooldoesnotusephysicalpunishmentofanysort.Thereisnocorporalpunishmentand nopunishmentisintendedtohumiliateorintimidateanystudent.

● TheschoolʼsBehaviourManagementStrategy(seeAppendix4)isagradedscalecoveringbothrewards andsanctions,intendedtoencouragestudentstowardsanacceptablelevelofbehaviour.

E2.RewardsandExpectations-AllStudents

Rewards

Studentswhodoparticularlygoodworkrelativetotheirability,ormakeapositivecontributiontothelifeof theschool,receiveaCommendation.TheCommendationcardisissuedbyateacher,TutororHouseparent; thestudentshouldtakeittothePrincipalforrecording,beforetakingithometoshowtohisorherparents.

Attheendoftheschoolyear,prizesareawardedforachievementinacademicsubjects,incommendations awarded,inmusicandforgeneralcontributiontothelifeoftheschool.

ExpectationsandSanctions

TheSchoolʼsBehaviourManagementStrategyprovidesarangeofsanctionsinagradualscaleofincreasing severitydesignedtoencouragethestudenttowardsanacceptablelevelofattainmentorbehaviour.Possible sanctionsforminoroffencesorpooracademicworkincludedetentions,gating(i.e.notbeingallowedtoleave theschoolpremisesor,forboarders,thehouse),academicreportorsupervisedprivatestudy.

Seriousmisbehaviour,orpersistentacademicindiscipline,mayresultinaSchoolDetention,whichtakesplace aerschool,duringʻfreetimeʼ. ThestudentwillalsobeinterviewedbytheVice-Principaltodiscusstheoffence andtheirfutureconduct.

Suspension

Seriousorrepeateddisciplinaryoffencesmayresultinthestudentʼssuspensionforbetweentwodaysandtwo weeks,andafinalwarningmayalsobeissued.Whilesuspended,thestudentisexpectedtoremainathome duringtheschoolday,andworkwill,wheneverpossible,beset.Asuspendedstudentmaynotattendany schoolfunction(e.g.concert)orsocialevent.(Astudentmayalsobesuspendedwhilstaninvestigationintoan allegedseriousincidenttakesplace.)

Followingasuspension,thestudent(andifpossiblehisorherparentsorguardian)willberequiredtoattend

aninterviewwithamemberoftheschoolSeniorLeadershipsTeamtodiscusshis/herfutureconduct.

Expulsion

InthemostextremecircumstancesthePrincipalreservestherighttoexpelagirlorboyfromtheschool. Althoughthestudentʼsbestinterestswillbetakenintoconsideration,theinterestsofthewholeschool communityandthenatureoftheoffencewillbeofparticularsignificance.Insuchcircumstances,parentshave arightofappealtotheschoolgovernors.

ThePrincipalisrequiredtoactfairlyandinaccordancewiththeprinciplesofnaturaljustice.ThePrincipalwill makeadecisiononacase-by-casebasis,willexpelastudentfromtheSchoolonlyasalastresortandwillnot expelastudentotherthaningravecircumstances.

Withdrawalofrighttoboard

Forrepeatedboardingoffences,orwherethecontinuedpresenceofthestudentisfelttobedetrimentalto goodorderintheHouse,aboardingplacemaybewithdrawneithertemporarilyorpermanentlyatthe Principalʼsdiscretion.

ControlledDrugs

TheschoolʼspolicyisthatThePurcellSchoolshouldbefreefromcontrolleddrugs.Webelievethat involvementwithcontrolleddrugsisalwayswrongforthefollowingreasons:

● Itisillegal.Usingcontrolleddrugscanleadtoacriminalconvictionwhichwillaffectemployment prospects,forexamplebymakingitimpossibletovisitcertaincountriesincludingtheUSA.Thiscould haveseriousimplicationsforanycareer,butparticularlyinmusic.

● Drugshaveharmfulphysicalside-effects.Someoftheseareunpredictableand immediateand accountforanumberofprematuredeathsamongstyoungpeopleeachyear;allarenowassociated withlongertermhealthproblems.

● Asmallnumberofyoungpeoplequicklydevelopsomeformofdependencyondrugs.

● Involvementindrugculturetendstodrawyoungpeopleawayfrommoreworthwhileactivitiesand oenresultsinafallingawayofacademicperformanceandachievementsinotherareas.

● Involvementwithcontrolleddrugsisdamagingtotheschoolcommunityasawhole.

Anystudentfoundtobeinvolvedwithillegalorotherharmfuldrugswhileunderschooljurisdictioneitheron oroffschoolpremisescanexpecttobesuspendedfromschoolandmaysubsequentlybeexpelleddepending onthecircumstances.Theschoolreservestherighttoinformthepolice.

LegalDrugs

Theschooloperatesaʻnosmokingorvapingʼpolicyatalltimesthroughoutthebuildingsandgrounds.This policyappliestostudents,employees,parentsandvisitorsandincludestheuseofe-cigarettes,vapes and Shishapens.

ThePurcellSchoolisanunsuitableinstitutionforthosewithanestablishedsmokinghabit.

Studentsarenotpermittedtobeinpossessionofalcohol,orundertheinfluenceofalcohol,onschool premisesorwhenunderthejurisdictionoftheschool(e.g.onschooltrips,duringtheschooldayforday studentsoratanytimeforboarders).Nostudent,includingthoseoflegalage,mayenterlicensedpremises, includingoff-licences,duringtermtime.

A. Youmayonlyusepracticeroomsforindividualpracticeorensemblerehearsals.Youareexpectedto takecareoffurniture,equipment,pianosorotherinstrumentsintheserooms. B. Youareexpectedtoobeyanyreasonablerequestorinstructionfromteachingstaff,boardingstaff, supportstafforstudentleaders.

C. YoumustsignandobservetheICTAcceptableUsePolicy.
