Free skills training at auto trade fair later this month Johannesburg - The 6th Automechanika trade fair is set for 18-21 September at Johannesburg Expo Centre in Nasrec.

In a statement the organisers said the event will be co-located with Futuroad Expo, and Scalex Expo, which focuses on transport systems, infrastructure and logistics.

“This year’s event is set to be bigger than ever before, with over 600 exhibitors from 28 different countries as well as over 15 industry focused conferences running alongside the show,” the statement said.

The organisers have also focused on introducing free skills development seminars and interactive areas. It is free to attend for all trade visitors.

Since the first show was staged in South Africa in 2009, the number of exhibitors and visitors to the biennial Automechanika Johannes-

burg trade fair has grown.

Some of the exhibitors at this year’s show include Trysome, Auto Electrical, Centlube, Aero-cure, Diesel Electric, Launch Technologies, Engen, Dixon Batteries and Turbo Direct.

“These events are also the ideal meeting place for all involved in the industry, dealerships, and trade stores as well as the maintenance and repair segment. It provides a platform for business and technological knowledge transfer.

The

rise of the career woman: relooking at workplace gender disparity In the long run, we shape our lives, and we shape ourselves. The process never ends until we die. And the choices we make are ultimately our own responsibility - Eleanor Roosevelt “These words contain an eternal truth and in the context of Women’s Month they inspire creating a proactive environment which addresses the start reality of the glass ceiling for women in the South African workplace,” says Patience Mahlaba, branch manager, Boston Braamfontein.

We take a look at proactive strategies to relook at gender disparity in the workplace.

1. Strategise: While South Africa’s ongoing push for gender transformation in senior positions has not yet seen major changes in business, women can start creating opportunities by proactively planning for success.

Patience herself has a mindset of continual growth. Throughout her years at Boston she has been studying, and I succrenty studying towards a BCom degree. She quotes author of the Slight Edge, Jeff Olson - “Luck is when that constancy of preparedness eventually creates opportunity.”

Says Patience: “We need to actively focus on continuous professional development and upgrading of our skills. This will allow us as women to adopt an active position in seeking our opportunities.” She also advises to get involved in your communities and NGO’s. “Serving on committees and completing high-profile tasks bring achievements into relevant conversations to highlight your competencies,” she says.

3. Role models: Patience advises to find a mentor or role model and do some research into their success.

Ask yourself “How have these women moved through the glass ceiling?”

Find out what skills or character traits you need to emulate and develop to make this possible for yourself.

This can be facilitated through further studies such as Boston’s new Postgraduate Diploma in Management for those who have completed undergrad degrees and are looking to move into management positions

with confidence and capacity.

4. Assertiveness: Being assertive means standing up for your rights in a calm, constructive way, rather than adopting a passive attitude of waiting for the “right” moment and opportunity. You can create opportunities to promote your worth and competencies.

5. Know the law: Create a safe and protected environment in the workplace by aligning yourself with other women in senior positions. It is also imperative to know your legal rights so that you are able to voice any concerns which may arise within the relevant legislative parameters.

6. Start at the source: Women are involved in raising both boys and girls. We play a strategic role in nurturing the mindset of our children.

Become conscious of the gender constructs we are enabling through our parenting. Ensuring that we divide work and household chores equally between our children, regardless of gender.

In this way we avoid entrenching the notion of gender prescribed roles which can often play out later on in the workplace environment.

“Don’t wait around for the promotion or right job or better environment to fall into your lap. Be assertive. Grow.

Develop your skills, creating your own opportunities to facilitate breaking through the glass ceiling,” she concludes.

outh African lifestyle network TRACE Mobile has announced that it is launching a programme to tackle youth unemployment by providing training and employment opportunities, called the TRACE Troops Initiative.

The vice-president, mobile and marketing at TRACE, Prescillia Avenel-Delpha said: “As a brand that primarily focuses on entertaining and engaging with the youth, we felt that it was our responsibility to give the very same youth, especially the unemployed, job opportunities.”

According to the company, the initiative is designed to employ and provide skills for the youth, regardless of their education and work experience.

programme will undergo weeks of training in sales, marketing and activations.

Statistics South Africa recently released data that showed that the unemployment level among youth between the ages of 15 – 24 stands at an alarming 55.2%. Furthermore, unemployment among graduates, in the same age group, is at 31%; having increased by 11.4%.

After successfully completing the programme, graduates who become ‘TRACE Troops’ will be stationed within TRACE Mobile, actively assisting with sales, marketing and activation activities, while earning a notable salary, the network said.

Doctor and her domestic worker murdered in house robbery Johannesburg - Two people have been arrested after a 39-year-old doctor was strangled to death and her domestic worker burnt beyond recognition in Zakariya Park, south of Joburg.

Police said it is understood that the suspects, aged 26 and 24, broke into the house on Thursday last weekend murdered the homeowner and her domestic worker before fleeing the scene with the victim’s silver-grey Chevrolet Cruze and household appliances.

Police said the body of the doctor and her domestic worker were found by a neighbour after hearing a huge explosion emanating from their house.

Police spokesperson Khalipha Mvula said the suspects were arrested in the Joburg CBD with the assistance of the JMPD, after they were found in possession of the vehicle and stolen items.

“Police found the lifeless body of the owner of the house on the floor. They went into the outside building and noticed the body of the helper was lying there, also deceased,” Mvula said.

Residents demand land for housing Zoë Postman

About 300 residents of Johannesburg South marched in the CBD demanding that government address their needs for land and housing, and for their areas to be developed.

The march included residents from Eldorado Park, Diepkloof, Freedom Park, Meadowlands, Klipspruit, Ennerdale and Vryhof. They carried placards which read: “How long living in shacks”, “25 years of democracy and no development” and

“We want Southern Farms Now”.

The protesters walked from Library Gardens to the Gauteng Legislature building and Gauteng Department of Human Settlements, where they demanded that Premier David Makhura and Human Settlements MEC Lebogang Maile, accept their memorandum of demands.

Some of the demands included decent housing closer to economic activity, transparency in the Rapid Land Release Programme (RLRP) and Mega Housing Development

programmes. They also demanded an end to privatisation of the housing projects, employment of community members in development projects, transparency in the election of community liaison officers, and free quality healthcare and education in their communities.

Following protests for land and housing in Johannesburg South in May 2018, the provincial government adopted the RLRP. The programme assisted with identifying land for redistribution to people

who want to build their own houses.

As a result, some farms known as the Southern Farms were identified for redistribution.

Resident Venessa Beukes said the land has been vacant since it was identified for the RLRP despite people’s desperate need for housing.

“The only thing left to do is for us to take that land by force. If provincial government doesn’t want to build houses for us, then just give us the land so we can build our shacks,” said Beukes. GroundUp

Johannesburg - In a statement FNB has announced that it recently unveiled the first phase of its BankCity revitalization project.

“The revitalised BankCity precinct offers a “Work, eat, play” experience through a combination of 34 retail tenants that are open to all residents and visitors of the inner-city, and nearly 12 000 FNB employees who occupy its properties. The first phase of the BankCity upgrade created 150 local jobs and the retailers employ approximately 231 people,” the statement said.

The bank said it took nearly 130 000 hours to produce brand new retail spaces and a world-class Fraser Street surface which connects Pritchard and Rahima Moosa streets.

“The unveiling of the revamped precinct coincides with FNB’s 180-year celebrations as SA’s oldest bank. The Bank’s journey is commemorated

through a mobile exhibition and an unveiling of an iMadiba installation in BankCity. The iMadiba project is a global initiative involving an international network of artistic recreations of Nelson Mandela’s Robben Island cell.

FNB CEO Jacques Celliers said: “When we first opened our head office in Simmonds Street, we expressed our commitment to be a part of the growth and evolution of the Joburg CBD. Johannesburg - Last Friday the High Court sentenced convicted murderer and gangster Faldeen Marks, aka Saampie, to 275 years’ imprisonment.

Marks, 33, a known Cape Town gangster, was sentenced on multiple charges, including several counts of murder.

National police spokesman Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said between 2016 and 2017, Marks murdered four people in Westbury; and in September 2017 he murdered a fifth person in Eldorado Park.

“In October 2017 he was arrested with a semi-automatic pistol. After being charged on 23 counts including the five murders, he was taken through the criminal justice process,” he said.

comed the conviction and sentencing of Marks, saying it will serve as a deterrent for gang-related crimes and instill confidence in potential whistleblowers to come forward.

Sitole applauded the two Gauteng detectives as well as the forensic experts and prosecutors for their roles in ensuring the successful prosecution of Marks.

“The conviction and sentencing of this ruthless criminal will certainly help our cause to successfully combat gangsterism and reduce the murder rate in our country. This sentencing is encouraging in that it will instill confidence in potential whistle-blowers to come forward, and also serve as a deterrent to gang-related crimes,” added Sitole.

Woman steals baby girl

Johannesburg - An 18-year-old woman was arrested after allegedly kidnapping a child at Park Station on Tuesday, according to police.

Police spokesperson Captain Xoli Mbele said the one-year-old girl and her mother were waiting for someone at Park Station when she was taken.

“The mother claimed that a woman she had known for a month gave the child sweets and said she was going to buy her chips, but never returned.”

Mbele said the mother alerted police and community members helped find the woman and she was arrested at a block of flats in the CBD on Tuesday.

A

group of activists advocating for legal abortions removed about 1 000 flyers pasted on walls in the Joburg CBD last Thursday.

The group, calling itself Sexual Reproductive Health for your Information, removed flyers promoting unsafe abortions. A member of the group Khanyisa Booi said they do not only take the flyers down, but also reach out to people.

“The clean-up went well; we reached an audience. However, we were disappointed that no one from the health department came through. It is sad that they could not attend such an important event.

“We removed over 1 000 flyers at Park Station. Unfortunately, because of the bylaws, we could not post messages on safe abortions and where people could go to have the procedure done,” Booi said.

She said they were planning for

a similar event for September 28, which is Safe Abortion Day. “This is a reminder that no woman should have to die for making a choice that law and constitutional rights support. Abortion is healthcare and therefore a basic human right. Science corroborates that abortions done by trained health care providers in a controlled environment are safe, and do not compromise a woman’s quality of life beyond the procedure,” she added.

National police spokesperson Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo says there have been messages, videos and pictures circulated to intimidate foreign nationals, which are mostly fake or old.

“Ninety-nine percent of them are either old or are fake, or they are not from this country,” he said.

He cited a video on social media of a man who was burnt alive, saying that happened in January this year.

“Far too many people are posting fake and old messages, pictures and videos and some of them are gruesome. This has the potential to incite further violence,” he said.

There have been many threatening messages aimed at foreign nationals, as well as violent videos, but their authenticity has not been confirmed.

On Tuesday Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson Steve Mabona said the department received messages regarding disruptions due to an insinuation that there is a vehicle kidnapping children and burning schools in and around Katlehong.

“Parents were panicking, fetching their children from schools,” he said.

However, Mabona said Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi found no burning of schools when he visited the area.

certain date, threatening to kill them if they did not. There were also messages that promised to ramp up unrest because foreign nationals have killed people since the unrest started.

“It causes a problem, in 2008 we had the same thing; the same messages seem to be coming up again, some of them slightly modified,” Naidoo said.

While foreign nationals fear for their lives, Naidoo reassured everyone in this regard. “People should not be fazed by these messages, and we have put measures in place to ensure the safety of everyone in SA.” News24

Market Theatre presents unique production of classical tragedy ‘The shows investigate folly, the true madness of the diseased, with the intent of giving back dignity to the fool’ Lusanda Zokufa

his month the Market Theatre in Newtown presents a unique production of great classical tragedy, called Medea.

The show sees on stage people with disabilities from Italian theatre company Teatro Patologico from Rome, accompanied by professional actors, thanks to the collaboration between the Italian Cultural Institute in Pretoria and the Market Theatre Foundation.

The production focuses on deep connection between use of the body, language and music. The body becomes the principal means of communication, whereas language and use of original music revolve around their corporeal and spiritual link with performers’ bodies.

The shows will be held at the Mannie Manim at the Market Theatre on 27 and 28 September.

In addition to the staging of Medea, the group of Teatro Patologico will hold a workshop at Little Eden, an association dedicated to physically and mentally disabled people.

The Italian actors will work together with a selected group of guests from the South African facility to jointly realize an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus. For the staging, a plot outline is elaborated and, once the parts have been assigned, the participants are asked to “let the characters talk”, thus giving life to a script composed of original pieces mixed with others born from improvisation. The show resulting from this workshop will be performed, also at the Mannie

Manim on 29 September.

In the artistic and theatrical statement of Teatro Patologico, led by artistic director Dario D’Ambrosi, theatre is considered not just a form of therapy, but also an opportunity for artistic and emotional expression, a place for aggregation and stimulating training in which to play and have serious fun, where disabled actors can feel like, and finally be, the real protagonists of their scene. On the other hand, disabilities are seen as a way to expand the possibilities for theatrical and artistic expression.

Born in Milan in 1958, Dario D’Ambrosi is one of the major Italian avant-garde artists. He is an actor, director and the author of shows that represent the thoughts and the behaviours of people with mental

illness. For over 30 years he has been one of the most representative figures on the Italian theatre scene.

He showed intense passion for theatre and mental disorders since early age, so much that he stayed for three months at a psychiatric hospital to observe patients’ behaviour.

ecently appointed Bafana coach Molefi Ntseki has responded to scepticism over his credentials for the job.

SAFA acting CEO Russel Paul has explained why the process was so swiftly handled, having built up a reputation for delaying the process in previous instances.

“When Stuart Baxter resigned, we said we’d make announcement by the end of the month

and we kept our word, we announced on 31 August. At this occasion we didn’t have to deal with other clubs, which made it easy to deal with in terms of the criteria, but it was still a difficult process.”

Ntseki’s appointment has been met with some scepticism by South African football lovers, though he insists he is not looking to prove anyone wrong.

“Everybody has a right to an opinion, at times you have an opinion about somebody be-

cause you don’t know that person; at times you have an opinion about somebody because you think you know that person. But what is important is that an opportunity has been given to me, and I’m not in this position to prove anybody wrong but I’m here to serve my country, doing the best I can.
