Johannesburg - The Johannesburg Business School (JBS), at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), has launched its inaugural Master of Business Administration (MBA) course.

In a statement the university said following the guiding principle of the Business School, it has been designed to be purpose-driven, equipping students with practical tools and knowledge to grow small- and medium-sized businesses, to create jobs and expand the South African economy.

“There was significant interest in the programme, and after a competitive assessment and admissions process, was oversubscribed,” the university said.

A mix of exceptional local and international faculty will be lecturing on the MBA, the university said.

It added that the first cohort of students will experience a teaching style and lecture format characterised by short and practical lecture sessions, with a focus on gaining knowledge for impact.

“There is also an international module, which takes place in the second year of studies, at one of JBS’ international partner schools in Mumbai, Buenos Aires, or Shanghai. Students can juggle work responsibilities and their studies with either ‘Early Bird’ classes, starting at 06h30 during the week, or ‘weekender’ classes which run on Saturdays. They will undertake a practical business project as a capstone to the MBA, rather than the tradi-

tional academic research report,” it said.

Dept ready for corona virus - says minister Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi during the visit to the school

Principal removed following pupil’s death Germiston - Following the recent death of 15-year-old pupil, Leticia Jansen, Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said the principal of Graceland Educational Centre has been ordered to report to the district office.

The MEC blamed the school for negligence after Jansen, a Grade 9 pupil, was left by the scholar transport last Wednesday, and later found dead.

Her body was found in Elsberg on the East Rand last week. She was raped, killed and set alight.

Her grandmother reported the child missing to police but was told to bring a photo of the child, the education department said in a statement.

The department said Leticia and some learners from Dukathole in Germiston, were last Wednesday left behind by the departmental scholar transport and had to return home. “It seems Leticia was left by her peers while walking back home, apparently after complaining about a heavy school bag. That was the last time they saw her,” the department said.

Lesufi assured the family that if the school was in the wrong he would act decisively.

“It is alleged that the scholar trans-

port started a tendency of departing earlier than scheduled, leaving many learners behind. We will investigate circumstances surrounding this allegation. We have visited the family to convey our sincere condolences,” Lesufi said.

The principal, Patricia Peters will report to the district offices until the investigation on circumstances surrounding the death of the child is completed, the MEC said.

He also announced termination of the contract of the scholar transport provider, which was accused of leaving children behind last Wednesday.

“A new scholar transport service provider has been appointed to effectively transport the pupils to and from school,” Lesufi said.

Johannesburg - Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has reassured the nation that his department is ready to handle the possibility of the corona virus outbreak reaching the country.

At a media briefing on Wednesday Mkhize said to date South Africa has not reported or suspected cases of the virus that has plagued China.

“Research into the epidemiology of the virus or natural history of the virus is on-going,” he said.

He outlined measures that are being taken by the department to detect any contact with the virus.

“South Africa has responded rapidly to ensure the corona virus does not become a national threat.

It is standard procedure to monitor emergent outbreaks and we are currently tracking a plethora of pathogens, including those viruses of pandemic potential,” he said.

Bid to benefit from City projects

Yeoville - Local businesses and residents have complained that they do not benefit from municipality projects in their area, and so they decided to shut them down to force the city council to discuss the issue with them.

Yeoville’s Ward 67 Councillor Refilwe Mazibuko recently met small business and community representatives to find a solution. Local SMMEs complained that they are not considered when projects take place in their area, accusing the municipality of unfair practices.

A Joburg Water project is suspended, owing to community claims that they do not benefit from it.

Mazibuko said most Joburg Wa-

ter projects have been affected because local businesses, supported by community members, disrupted them. “They accuse Joburg Water of favouritism, claiming that only one company always gets the job, while they submit their documents but allegedly overlooked.”

Mazibuko said they claim that the company that gets the contracts does not belong to their ward.

“They say directors of this company are not residents of this ward, but reside in the neighbouring ward.

The projects include restoring new pipes, unblocking drainage systems and water reticulation. They feel that Joburg Water only gives this company all the jobs, while they

also have the capacity to carry out the work,” she said.

Mazibuko said they could not find a solution due to another issue.

“It was said after completing one of their projects Johannesburg Water engaged Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) to resurface the road, without including local labour. The community is adamant that the projects will remain suspended until Joburg Water meets their terms,” she said.

Joburg Water spokesperson Eleanor Mavimbela said they are not aware of the issue referred to.

“We shall investigate the situation, after that we will be able to respond to the complaints,” she said.

Tracking group details vehicle-related crime James de Villiers Car-tracking company Tracker says over half of all vehicle-related crime occurs in Gauteng, followed by Durban in KZN for both the highest number of thefts and hijackings.

Tracker’s data suggest that most thefts and hijackings occur on a Saturday, and are reported between 20:00 and 21:00.

Over half of all vehicle-related crime in SA occurs in Gauteng, with hijackings more prevalent in Johannesburg and theft mainly occurring in Pretoria, a new report found.

The Tracker vehicle crime statistics for the period July to December 2019 revealed that in December there had

been an 18% overall decline in the number of theft and hijackings reported countrywide. This followed a 21% decrease in December 2017.

The information was compiled from Tracker’s more than 1.1 million installed vehicle tracker base in South Africa.

Gauteng is followed by Durban for the provincial top spot for both hijackings and theft. The Western Cape is in third position, with hijackings mainly occurring in Khayelitsha while theft is highest in Cape Town central.

Practitioner arrested over contravening Medical Law Hillbrow - A medical doctor was recently arrested for allegedly contravening the Medical Act; and would appear before the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) Inspectorate Office.

Dr Ninadu Mafulu was arrested after the HPCSA and Special Law Enforcement Unit of the police conducted an operation at his medical practice in Pretoria Street.

Mafulu’s medical practice in Hillbrow is registered as a medical practitioner with the HPCSA, but is only registered in the public service category.

Head of corporate affairs at the HPCSA, Daphney Chuma said Mafulu’s case would be handed to its internal complaints handling unit, to proceed with disciplinary action for allegedly practising as an independent medical practitioner, while being registered in the public service category.

“Dr Mafulu was also found to be dispensing scheduled medication at his practice, while not having the necessary licence to dispense in terms of Section 22C(l)(a) of the Medicines and Related Substances Act, (Act 101 of 1965) (as amended), which constitutes a criminal offence.

“In light of the above, Mafulu was arrested and taken into custody at the Hillbrow police station,” Chuma said.

She added that he HPCSA is a statutory body that was established under the Health Professions Act 56 of 1974.

“The HPCSA mission is quality and equitable health care for all. It is mandated to regulate health professions in the country, in aspects pertaining to education, training and registration, professional conduct and ethical behaviour, ensuring continuing professional development, and fostering compliance to healthcare standards. To safeguard the public and guide the professions, registration in terms of the act is a prerequisite for practising any health professions registerable with it,” Chuma added.

ANC Women’s League president Bathabile Dlamini has called for harsher punishment for those found guilty of rape, including that they be castrated.

Dlamini made the call on Sunday during the party’s 108th anniversary celebration in Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal.

“There must be no bail for rape and no parole for rapists. There must be chemical castration for those convicted of rape,” she said.

Dlamini added that the names of those found guilty of rape should be made public to protect women from having future relationships with them. Her call follows a spate of murders, rapes and kidnapping of women and children.

She also called for introduction of gender studies in the education system. “Judges, the police and lawyers who deal with women abuse issues must be well equipped to handle such cases. Boys must be taught at a young age about issues affecting women, so that they

On Monday she said this was not the first time the call for harsher punishment for rapists is made.

“During last year’s 16 Days of Activism we made this call at a meeting with NGOs and alliance partners. Some women came out strongly on the issue of the death sentence. We raised the issue of human rights, and said we can’t give the state rights to take human life; therefore the option was chemical castration. There should be an open discussion about this matter. There is the Constitution, but how many women must die? It is important for men to be part of the debate so they say what their problem is. Every day, we shout as women and the less worried people are the men,” Dlamini said.

Sandton - A labour department employee has been arrested in connection with a cyber-attack in which one of the Department of Employment and Labour’s servers was hacked.

Department spokesperson Teboho Thejane said the employee, who was arrested on Friday, was stationed at the Sandton labour centre.

“A criminal case has been opened and further investigations are underway,” he said.

Thejane explained that the Compensation Fund’s Anti-Corruption & Integrity management team had been alerted about the cyber-attack on Tuesday.

“The hacker hacked more than 300 employees, which resulted in their

logon details being compromised for malicious purpose. The Compensation Fund cyber-crime team attended to the incident and were able to identify one of the employees as a suspect. On Friday they arrested an employee who was stationed at the Sandton Labour Centre,” Thejane said.

The police were accompanied by the fund’s Anti-Corruption team during the arrest.

Thejane said the fund is committed to curb fraud and corruption, and ensure that every person caught committing such an act to prejudice the fund or department is brought to book. “The department is committed to zero tolerance against fraud and corruption,” Thejane said.

300km/h speedster gets bail

Midrand - A man who allegedly shared a video of himself driving at over 300km/h on the N1 highway has been released from custody on R1 000 bail.

The man, Phumlile Ncube, 36, appeared at the Midrand magistrate’s court on Monday after spending time in police custody last weekend.

Corporation (RTMC) said Ncube faces charges of reckless and negligent driving, and endangering the lives of other motorists. The case was postponed to March 13.

Ncube was identified as the alleged driver of a red Audi TTS that sped at 308km/h along the N1 southbound in Midrand, in a 120km/h zone.

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula welcomed Ncube’s arrest on Sunday.

“The alleged speedster, who resides in Midrand, was tracked down at a funeral in Limpopo by undercover investigators,” Mbalula said.

The video, which starts with a speed of 243km/h on the dashboard, was widely shared on social media.

he Windybrow Arts Centre in Hillbrow will accommodate the Johannesburg Awakening Minds (JAM); a group of formerly homeless men and women who, through poetry and classes in acting and voice, have managed to improve their lives, for the next three years.

JAM was founded in 2012 by award-winning actress Dorothy Ann Gould. It teaches through voice, breathing, physical warmups, creative writing exercises, painting and emotional release work. The number soared to 40 people.

In August 2013, they performed for the first time at The Arts Alive Launch Luncheon.

In November 2013, they performed at Space.com at the Joburg Theatre and in December, at PopArt, Arts on Main.

In December 2019, JAM became

homeless and needed to find a new space from which they could work.

The Market Theatre Foundation offered JAM a three-year residency at the Windybrow Arts Centre.

Market Theatre Foundation CEO Ismail Mahomed said JAM is a unique South African theatre company. “Founded and located in the surrounds of the Windybrow Arts Centre, it was the right thing to do to bring them home to the Windybrow Arts Centre.”

Supported by the Windybrow Arts Centre’s administrative team, JAM will be provided with marketing and technical support; and also be allocated a season in one of the Market Theatre venues for an annual showcase.

“We want the Windybrow Arts Centre to take JAM to new heights through this partnership. We would like to see JAM make their debut on the festival circuit next year with

performances either at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda or the Pan African Creative Exchange in Bloemfontein,” Mahomed said.

The Windybrow Arts Centre will also continue to work with the St George’s Anglican Church Parkview and St Michael’s in Bryanston, who for the past 20 years have provided tea, sandwiches and biscuits for the homeless.

It was June Jardien who reached out to Dorothy Ann Gould to try her hand at providing skills training in drama to the homeless.

“I always hoped to be hearing their stories in order to make sense of my own voice as a citizen of South Africa,” said Dorothy Ann Gould.

Windybrow Arts Centre head Keitu Gwangwa said: “This is most valuable to the participants, the initial objectives of the programme. We look forward to working together with the group and creating,” she added.

Johannesburg - Female guitarists will team up to celebrate African women through music, for the first time at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park on February 15.

Musician Zahara, Msaki and Berita will share the stage. Zahara who signed a resident deal with Emperors Palace last year is looking forward to the ‘night of the girls’.

Zahara, real name Bulelwa Mkutukana, said the concert will encourage female musicians to support and love each other.

“I look forward to share the stage with both Msaki and Berita. I have absolute respect for them and regard them as my little sisters. This is just a celebration of music with guitar girls. We are going to have fun while entertaining the audience,” she said.

Zahara explained that the upcoming performance is not part of her residency she has with the entertainment place. “This is just a perfor-

mance and it is not part of my residency. My residency which will feature many artists will start in April.”

Msaki has established herself as the voice of the current generation, and her composing abilities shines in hits like Imfama Ziyabona, Ungazilibali and Nal’ithemba among others.

Berita is an award-winning artist from Zimbabwe, who sings in isiXhosa with some of her popular hits being Thandolwethu and Ndicel’ikiss.

The organiser of the event, Thato Radebe said the aim of this event was to uplift women in music, and show that they can fill big venues by themselves.

Bafana in tough World Cup group, says Ntseki Sports Reporter

or the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup group phase qualifiers, Bafana Bafana head coach Molefi Ntseki says they have been drawn in a tough Group C, which comprises Ghana, Ethiopia and neighbours Zimbabwe.

Bafana Bafana will face Ghana again, who they are currently contesting a 2021 Africa Cup of Nations spot with, after the two were drawn against each other in that competition.

The World Cup qualifiers kickoff in October and will run until November 2021, and only the group winners will proceed to the final round of qualifying; where the 10 winners will pitted against each other on a home and away

basis to determine the five that will represent Africa in Qatar.

South Africa missed out on the Brazil 2014 and Russia 2018 tournaments; the last qualification was on home soil in 2010.

Ntseki said every team in the Top 40 is playing to qualify for the five spots in the World Cup. “We are aware of the qualities of Ghana coming into the qualifiers, we are aware of our neighbours Zimbabwe and also of Ethiopia, who did well to win their preliminary match against Lesotho to be in the draw. All the teams in our group will be given the same respect because they deserve to be here. It will be a tough one but we are looking forward to a good start in qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup,” he said.
