JMPD arrests suspects for theft and damage to property Staff Reporter news@inner-city-gazette.co.za

n Saturday, JMPD arrested two more suspects for theft and damage to property. This follows the arrest of five suspects on Friday for malicious damage to property and theft from a building located in Rissik Street. The arrests on Saturday took place at the same building.

Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba was tipped off by community members about the criminal activity, and alerted JMPD who subsequently arrested two male sus-

pects at the building.

The suspects were in the process of further damaging the building and stealing building materials. It is believed that materials such as the metal roof sheets were to be sold to a scrap yard nearby. JMPD is investigating if any of the scrap yards in the area are involved in buying stolen goods.

Public Safety MMC Michael Sun says “This is again the perfect example of how active citizenry can assist the police to bring criminal activity to a grinding hold, and I wish to thank the community for alerting us. I also commend the swift action taken by our JMPD officers.”

imbabwe’s Robert Mugabe resigned as president Tuesday after 37 years in power, after parliament began impeachment proceedings against him.

“My decision to resign is voluntary on my part and arises from my concern for the welfare of the people of Zimbabwe and my desire for a smooth, non-violent transfer of power,” said Mugabe in his letter, which was met with cheers and dancing when it was read out in parliament.

cheered in the streets, as the news spread like wildfire across the capital, Harare.

While jubilation was in the air in the capital, Zimbabwe’s military commander warned citizens not to target old adversaries following the historic resignation.

“Acts of vengeful retribution or trying to settle scores will be dealt with severely,” Gen. Constantino Chiwenga said.

Mugabe, who had been the world’s oldest head of state at the age of 93, said that proper procedures should be followed to install new leadership.

Qn - Why is it so difficult for school leavers to decide on a career to follow?

Ans: Recent research has indicated that prospective tertiary education students are not confident about their career choices.

Schools do not have the resources they need to assist learners with career investigation, and in addition they have to focus their time and efforts on the academic material for exams –they don’t have the luxury of spending time advising on careers.

It is in this environment that learners have to make a choice and finalise applications! I can also say from experience – when you are in first year you are overwhelmed, studies are very difficult at a tertiary level, and we land up questioning whether the effort required matches our passion for the industry we have selected!.

Qn - So Boston realized that there was a gap in career education at school level, and addressed it with a computerized programme?

Ans: Well, recent research indicates that 73% of matric students believe they are still in need of comprehensive career guidance and 84% believe there are many career opportunities they do not even know of. Sadly, only 21% believe they have the resources within their area to guide them towards their ideal career. Learners need clarity!

he City of Johannesburg looks forward to yet another massive city-wide clean-up campaign, and urges all stakeholders and residents to come together again on Saturday, 25 November 2017, for the third round of cleaning our environment.

During the second city-wide A Re Sebetseng cleaning campaign held on 28 October, more than 1250 clean-ups were held all around Jo-

hannesburg.

“I would like to extend a big thank-you to each and every one of the participants. They are showing that the slogan of our campaign Together, let’s make Johannesburg work – is turning into a reality,” Cllr Nico de Jager, MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services said.

During the IDP-feedback sessions, many residents requested additional information about the campaign, and they are holding their Councillors to account for those whom are not yet participating.

“This Saturday, Pikitup will again provide residents with the necessary gloves and refuse bags. They will also be responsible for removing waste and recyclables afterward every clean-up,” adds Cllr De Jager.

Residents are encouraged to:

• Separate their waste before and during the event; and • Take any recyclables to Pikitup garden sites or drop of centres; • Besidents bring their own spades, forks, brooms, wheel barrows and clippers.

A Re Sebetseng is a Mayoral legacy programme and Pikitup acts as the implementing agent for the

ward-based campaign.

Furthermore, A Re Sebetseng participants are not only asked to volunteer their time to clean, but also to beautify their surroundings by painting park benches, planting trees and flowers and removing illegal posters and graffiti. Participants can also educate their neighbours and friends on the clean-up.

Inner City on path to growth The Inner City of Johannesburg is being rejuvenated into a vibrant, thriving business environment

he city of Johannesburg is well on its way to attracting investment through the inner-city rejuvenation programme.

This is one of the key priorities driven by the department of Economic Development under MMC Leah Knott, in collaboration with Development Planning under MMC Funzela Ngobeni.

This partnership speaks to the overall strategy of fostering economic growth towards a 5% target by 2021.

The department of Economic Development on Thursday 16 November 2017, hosted the inner-city rejuvenation networking session with key stakeholders and investors; at one of Joburg’ s newly established and contemporary mixed-use building ‘No.1 Eloff Street’. This building boasts a platform of doing business, provides space to a diverse number of emerging entrepreneurs, has an offering of affordable accommodation and a vibrant city ambiance from their restaurants, encompassed by jazz bars and artist studios all under one building.

The department of Economic Development specifically chose this particular venue in order to showcase possibilities that can emanate from an inner-city rejuvenation approach.

The inner city of Johannesburg is being rejuvenated into a vibrant, thriving business environment, with affordable housing and bounteous

leisure. At the heart of achieving this goal is the imperative support needed from the private sector and the willingness from relevant and key investors, to re-look at the city of Joburg, in a whole new light – a positive light.

In order to successfully rebuild the city of Joburg, all key role players will have to focus their energies on driving towards one accord. The city has demonstrated the immense value of the inner city community through the reconstruction of the Inner City Partnership Forum, an important platform for collaborative efforts driven towards reshaping the inner city in all facets.

As the Member of Mayoral Committee for Economic Development, Councillor Knott highlighted the role of her department in building a thriving inner city economy, open to the entrepreneurs of Johannesburg and the business men and women who come from all over the globe to do business here. Johannesburg needs to step up to the plate as the economic hub of Africa and create a 24-hour city where we can truly say we live, work and play in our city.

During his keynote address at the inner-city rejuvenation networking session, Executive Mayor Mashaba reiterated the importance of all-inclusive business opportunities that the city of Joburg holds and can execute, in order to drive progressive empowerment for the people of Johannesburg.

“You see the problems that confront our inner city today, were entirely preventable, the breakdown of law and order, by-laws being ignored, and hijacking of buildings by criminal elements, and grime and filth are all failures of man” said Mashaba.

Nevertheless, Mayor Mashaba derives relief from the fact that ‘what arises from the failures of man can be resolved by man’ and this is what the mayor intends to do.

“I see an Inner City of high-rise buildings, with the lights, sounds and smells of a vibrant, diverse heart-beat of our City, a place where the hijacked and bad buildings have been converted into low-cost affordable housing for our people - I see a place where small businesses and young professionals can come here to set up, and not be priced out of the Rosebanks and Sandtons of our City.”

233 JMPD officers graduate ‘Go forth and serve residents of this beautiful city with pride’ - Mashaba

his was the message of City of Johannesburg’s Executive Mayor, Cllr Herman Mashaba, to the 233 Joburg Metro Police Department officers who graduated on, 21 November 2017.

Most of the graduating officers had previously served as Peace Officers at the JMPD as part of the Expanded Public Works Programme.

Earlier this year, the city welcomed 117 new officers to the JMPD to bolster its drive to prevent crime, to ensure that by-laws are

upheld and enforce traffic management.

Joburg also recently recruited an additional 1 500 young people to bolster the capacity of the JMPD. “I believe that it is the addition of new officers, and the efforts of the entire JMPD force as a whole, that have resulted in a significant decrease in crime stats in our first quarter of our financial year. There has been a 3% reduction in burglaries taking place on business premises, an almost 8% reduction in burglaries taking place at residential properties, an almost 4% reduction of common robbery, and an 8% decrease in motor vehicle theft.

“A decrease in the percentages shows how a capacitated, disciplined, and hardworking Metro Police force can yield positive results if they are dedicated and committed to upholding bylaws, law and order, and security in the city,” said Mayor Mashaba.

He said more JMPD officers will further reduce crime statistics and bring about a safer, more secure, and peaceful Johannesburg.

“Graduates, be proud of the uniform you wear and the commitment it has taken to earn it, and go forward, standing firm in the pledge you have made to serve the city.

“Every action you take, every encounter

you engage in must be towards the fight against lawlessness and corruption, and upholding the prescripts of our constitution, on which our laws are based.

“Unfortunately, the city abounds with people who think that R100 here or a KFC meal there will excuse them from their infringements or acts of lawlessness,” said Mayor Mashaba.

The mayor said Joburg was currently exposed to elevated levels of drug dealing and addiction, human trafficking, buildings hijacked by unscrupulous landlords, and significant vandalism of city-owned infrastructure.

aryl Impey, 32, took home the Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge bragging rights after crossing the finish line first in 02h13min on Sunday 19 November. The winner in the ladies category was Ashleigh MoolmanPasio who was the first to cross finish line in 2h55min.

Daryl made Tour de France history when he became the first African to take possession of the Tour de France yellow jersey in July 2013.

He said he put the pressure when cycling on the M1. “It was a pretty hard finish, coming into Steyn City is always tough.”

Moolman-Pasio was third at Boels Rental Hills Classic and won the overall title at AuensteinerRadsporttage and took second overall at Aviva Women’s Tour in 2016. She went on to represent

South Africa at the Olympic Games 2016 in Rio, Brazil.

“Staying calm is something that I have had to learn while racing in Europe. I have started being calmer in the World Tour this year, learning to have composure and waiting for my chance”, said Moolman-Pasio.

Over 30,000 cyclists tackled the 94.7 km route that saw the City of Johannesburg shut down streets across the city to enhance the safety of the cyclists during the race.

The City of Johannesburg’s biggest cycling race was celebrating its 21st anniversary this year, making this year’s edition even more special.

Among those who gathered at the start of the race was the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Herman Mashaba, who said the race would boost tourism.

“It brings people into our city. As you’re aware, we have about 30,000 cyclists and some of them come from all parts of the world. This is wonderful for tourism in our city”, said Mayor Mashaba. Cllr Mpho Phalatse, the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Health and Social Development was among the riders, along with 100 members of the City of Johannesburg cycling team.
