he term “business management’ is broad based and implies actually many skills and job opportunities. It sounds great though when you are in matric and you decide to go and study Business Management, but look into the various areas of the job well and find your niche.

“There are quite a variety of fields to specialise in,” says Kerry Damons, Marketing Manager of Boston City Campus & Business College.

“This explains the extensive range of business management courses to choose from. From credit management to information technology management, you are sure to find a business management course that will suit you and your career goals” Damons explains that Business Management involves many learned skills and also many aspects of an organisation. “In short, business management involves running an organi-

sation. You may be doing tasks such as controlling, leading, supervising, organising and planning of projects, business deals as well as managing staff” Different job opportunities open up when you study business management courses. Depending on the type of business management courses you study, you could apply for a position in: Business Management studies have a tendency to improve job security, because you become versatile within an organisation. “. Business management is one of those fields where, no matter how many cutbacks are made, organisations will always require the skills of a business manager to keep the business up and running. Business managers usually fall into a higher salary bracket because of their versatility that lends to them being active managers.

How do you decide on which aspect of Business Management to specialise in? When choosing a business management course, make sure you choose a field you are passionate about. If you have a head for numbers, a career in finance management would be perfect.

The following are the new Boston qualifications accredited by the SABPP: • Higher certificate in Marketing Specialisation Sport • Higher Certificate in marketing Specialisation Tourism • Higher certificate in Paralegal Practice • Human Resource and employee relations • Higher certificate in Marketing Specialisation Digital music • Higher certificate in Business Management Practice • Higher certificate in Marketing Practice • Higher certificate in Commerce in General Management • Diploma in Commerce in Public Relations (two year minimum study) Higher Certificates usually signify that you have attained a basic level of higher education knowledge and competence in a particular field or occupation and are capable of applying knowledge and competence in an occupation in the workplace.

They are primarily vocational, or in-

dustry oriented. (Hence the stand out qualification of Digital Music!).

They provide the basic introductory knowledge, critical thinking skills and practical techniques in the chosen field of study. After obtaining the Higher Certificate, graduates may enrol for a Diploma or degree at Boston.

What will these qualifications give you? Damons explains that graduates will leave with the necessary knowledge and practical skills which may include : • Operate effectively in the workplace using a number of Windows-based end-user applications • Apply principles of public relations and integrated communication practice • Demonstrate business and event management skills • Identify the socio-economic needs of society • Demonstrate an understanding of business ethics • Project manage various aspects of the business including the strategy and budget within an organisation Learners wishing to apply for one of the new accredited programmes must meet the entry requirements, the minimum being a national senior certificate, and a successful application!

Damons continues that Boston will apply, on behalf of the Learner, to the SABPP for verification of the

Learner’s results. On successful verification the Learner will be issued a higher certificate or in the case of the Diploma: Commerce: Public Relations SAQA ID 21068, NQF Level 6, 240 credits from SABPP. The South African Board for People Practices (SABPP) is a Quality Assurance Partner (QAP) of the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) and is registered as a Professional Body by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).

FURTHER STUDY OPPORTUNITIES While further study options are encouraged, these will be based on application and evaluated individually.

These will include RPL towards any Higher Education Programme. Since each submission is individually evaluated, neither admission nor advanced placement is assured.

Lastly, Damons says you should do some introspection and see if you the right personality traits for Business Management.

These include: Good math skills, strong time management skills, good common sense, a strong desire for organization and efficiency, excellent communication/salesmanship, creative problem solving, listening skills, negotiation skills, leadership skills and ethics.

AFHCO, Africa Housing Company, threw a party for the neighbourhood as they celebrated with YFM DJ’s and gave away a brand new Kia Picanto.

I

n November 2017 AFHCO, Africa Housing Company, kicked off an exciting competition to win a brand new Kia Picanto, plus a weekly share of R5000.

All the public had to do to enter was to live with AFHCO, either as an existing tenant or signing up as a new tenant.

The last few weeks saw 10 lucky tenants take home R5000 in cash, and on the 17th of March 2018, the big ‘Celebrate with AFHCO and YFM’ event was held in the piazza of the End Street Mall at 120 End Street, a building owned and managed by

AFHCO. The event attracted a huge crowd, who were attracted by the sounds of YFM DJ’s Lebza da Villain and DJ Candii burning up the deck with the latest hip-hop and house music. Dance competitions, rapping contests, great giveaways were the order of the day, with the MC, Themba Boyi, keeping the crowd going and narrowing the nine finalists down to five.

The five finalists each got a car key but only one was the right key, and the festivities come to a climax with the turning of the winning key.

The crowd, caught up in the drama of the moment, cheered wildly as the winner, Sipho Nyoni, claimed his

A tenant at AFHCO’s Moray House, Siphowas over the moon, “I’m so overwhelmed at the moment but I’m so happy.

It’s been a rough week, but this is just the best thing ever, and all thanks to AFHCO – I’m glad I made the right decision by staying with AFHCO. You know my lease ended last year in June, but I told myself, let me continue and stay with them, and I’m so glad I did! I stay at Moray House, one of the best and the cleanest, and I’m so happy about that.”

Vasco Da Gama urges students to participate in municipal matters

he City of Johannesburg’s Legislature has invited the University of Johannesburg (UJ) students and academics to keep a closer eye on the executive by ensuring that the promises made during elections turn into deliverables.

The Council Speaker, Cllr Vasco da Gama, Council Chief Whip, Cllr Kevin Wax and the Chair of Chairs, Cllr Alex Christians, recently led the chairpersons of different portfolio committees to UJ to engage with the students.

Addressing more than 450 students from various disciplines such as political science, international relations, governance, law and developmental studies at the packed Kingsway Campus in Auckland Park, Speaker Da Gama called on the student community to be active citizens and participate in municipal matters.

“We monitor proactively and ensure that whatever we have promised is delivered, which is how we are able to improve the lives of our people. I want to also extend an invitation to students who may want to visit the City and engage in further discussions about the municipality.

Our doors are open to share knowledge and we are as hungry to learn

as we are to teach,” said Speaker Da Gama.

The Speaker, who is the head of the legislative arm of the City, was also accompanied by the Chairpersons of Section 79 Oversight Committees. The committees have a significant role of watching over City departments to ensure they perform and deliver services to residents. The

Legislature is responsible for strengthening oversight and scrutiny on the executive in order to enhance accountability to the community.

“The legislature aims to hold the executive accountable, through means such as focusing on the eradication of corruption, nepotism and abuse of power, to inspire public confidence by striving to be an example of good governance, and to effect democratic control. A country cannot dream of a better and more promising future for as long as corruption is the order of the day and remains unchallenged,” added Speaker Da Gama.

Councillor Christians, among others functions, plays a critical role in guiding and ensuring that Section 79 Committees perform their oversight responsibilities on City departments and entities.

“One of the strategic functions my office does is to oversee the implementation of policy with regards to the coordination and management of

the work of the Section 79 Committees,” said Cllr Christians.

The Legislature plans to visit more Joburg-based tertiary institutions.

Cllr Wax told the students it was extremely difficult to achieve political consensus amongst different political parties in Council. “We now have unprecedented coalition governments in the county, and the City is also governed by coalition,” said Cllr. Wax. Speaker Da Gama challenged the students to continue with the robust discussions and to hold the City accountable as part of their democratic responsibility and in order to realise service delivery.

“Continuous engagements with various sectors in the community are critical to stay relevant and at the heartbeat of community issues,” said Speaker Da Gama.

UJ’s Head of Politics, Dr Suzy Graham, encouraged her students to prepare to one day occupy the City’s political leadership positions.

A loved one has passed on… now what?

I

t’s human nature not to want to think about death – your own or that of a loved one. But the consequence of not preparing for this inevitable part of life can be devastating for those left behind when a family member passes away.

“Very few people have their estate planning in order or the right executor appointed. When they pass away, the people they leave behind are faced with the dual challenge of coping with bereavement while trying to make sense of a very complex estate administration process for which they are entirely unprepared,” says Johan Strydom, FNB Fiduciary Specialist.

He adds, “Having a cursory understanding of the process that needs to be followed after someone dies is not only a good way of smoothing over the challenges that loved ones will face, but is a good incentive to get our estate affairs in order before it’s too late.”

Strydom outlines a few high-level steps that need to be followed when somebody dies: Step 1: Dealing with the funeral and associated costs: The most pressing and immediate cost that you will face will be the funeral and associated costs. Most funeral homes will not be prepared to wait for payment and will require a substantial deposit before proceeding with arrangements. In order to settle these costs, first determine whether or not the deceased held a funeral policy to help settle costs in full or in part. This will go some way to offsetting the immediate

The consequence of not preparing for this inevitable part of life can be devastating costs. In instances where no funeral cover is in place, then the estate is liable for the reasonable cost of the funeral. It is important to keep all the receipts arising from the funeral and submit a claim to be reimbursed from the estate once an executor has been appointed.

Step 2: Obtain the Will (or copy of the Will): Obtaining a copy of the Will is the most essential document needed to determine the distribution of assets, the naming of beneficiaries and the devolution of the estate. It should also name the executor or executrix of the Will and will act as a guide for executing the de-

ceased’s wishes. A Will is usually stored in a secure place at home or held in safe custody with the bank. If your loved one died without a Will, then the family/ intestate heirs nominate an executor from amongst themselves and the estate will be administered under intestate succession rules.

Step 3: Contact your financial institution to assist with immediate notifications: Most banks don’t automatically freeze a deceased person’s bank account; in fact, they require a certified copy of the death certificate in order to place a freeze on the accounts. Until

then, accounts will continue to operate as normal. When an executor is appointed, he or she will instruct the bank to place a hold on the account and close it.

Step 4: Notify the nominated executor: The responsibility of notifying the nominated executor of their role falls to the family of the deceased. They should provide the executor with the information and documents needed to administer the estate, including details of all the assets and liabilities in the estate. The ex-

ecutor will require all this information in order to give effect to the provisions of the deceased’s Will or the Intestate Succession Act. Step 5: Secure your day-to-day living expenses: Many spouses, partners and children may find themselves in a position where they still require access funds from the estate in order to meet their day-to-day living expenses. Once the bank account is frozen, debit orders are not processed further. Executors are not able to pay creditors for several months after death and it is recommended that heirs make arrangements to maintain the payments to avoid potential adverse interest charges and possible legal collection charges. FNB Fiduciary can help you identify monthly debit orders, as it is best to meet these obligations to protect the assets from being repossessed.

Step 6: Obtain all required documentation: As a beneficiary, you must assemble important documentation and attend to matters personally that will enable the executor to deal with the estate and to transfer any assets to you.

This includes providing your FICA details, opening a utilities account in your name at the municipality, or visiting the traffic licensing department to transfer any vehicles into your name.

“The process of dealing with a deceased estate can be very complicated, so the best approach you can take if you’re faced with this difficult situation is to partner with a knowledgeable, experienced and reputable Estate Executor to help you wind up the estate,” concludes Strydom.
