SUSPECT ARRESTED The Johannesburg Central Police arrested a 21- year-old suspect for common robbery at corner King George and Devilliers Street on the 14th of January 2016.

It is alleged that the suspect robbed a victim on the 10th of January 2016 at corner King George and Devilliers Street and disappeared after running into a tavern. While police were patrolling on the 14th of January 2016 at corner King George and Devilliers they came across the victim who then alerted the police after positively identifying the suspect as he was roaming around his hunting ground. The police managed to recover the victims stolen property after the suspect was found in possession of the stolen items.

Johannesburg police have sent what is suspected to be human bones found in a dilapidated building on the corner of Kerk and End Street for forensic testing.

Contractors started cleaning out huge piles of rubble and rotting trash including clothing, damaged household goods and decomposing waste from the basement of the six story building this week when they stumbled across the bones yesterday morning (Wednesday).

Police confirmed that parts of what is suspected to be a human skeleton were found. Johannesburg Central Police station spokesperson Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele said three pieces of bones were found.

“Just as we walk into this place, it smells like death. I thought it was just all the rotting rubbish. I am not surprised at all,” said a construction worker on site.

Adolaide Godi said she passes the area everyday and is also not surprised that a dead people would be found in the building as the area was dangerous and thugs who robbed people in the area often ran into the building.

“I am sure they will find more bones in there,” added Godi.

But Mbele cautioned: “The bones have been sent for forensic testing. For now we cannot be sure if they are indeed human.

The place is still very filthy and municipal workers are still draining water out of the building basement. We will be at the building tomorrow morning again (today).

If we can find a skull we will know for sure that the bones are human.”

Children die after playing in deep freezer ERMELO, MPUMALANGA - Four children, aged between four and seven, were found dead inside a deep freezer in Ermelo, Mpumalanga police said on Wednesday. The children, three boys and a girl, had been playing outside after coming home from school at about 1.30pm. A grandfather of some of the children, who were not all related, had left the fridge outdoors for cleaning and it is believed that the children climbed inside while playing. “They were last seen alive at 1.30pm, and their bodies were discovered at around 5.30pm,” said Mpumalanga police spokesman, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala.

The City of Johannesburg should consider making provision for people such as Mavimbela, who were trying to make an honest living, by perhaps having a designated place allocated to them where they could conduct their business safely.

Johannesburg - Street bookseller Mahle Mavimbela has lost his carefully selected collection once again in a raid by metro cops for obstructing the city’s by-laws, but there is some good news for him.

Wellwishers have offered to help rebuild his bookselling business on the streets of Johannesburg’s CBD. But if Mavimbela, who has also been the victim of book thieves in the past, wants to get the books seized by metro cops back, he needs to pay a R250 fine within 24 hours. And after that, another R65 for every day the books are being “stored” for him, otherwise his books will become state property.

Selling a book made a difference between whether or not his family would have enough to eat at night. It is no hobby. Metro cops came through and seized most of his books. I understand there are bylaws and we all want clean streets. But showcasing books doesn’t make our city look trashy. It makes our city look smart and cosmopolitan - because it is smart and cosmopolitan,” one citizen commented.

He asked himself why police were targeting small, honest, start up businesses such as Mavimbela’s when the country’s unemployment statistics were so high.

Minnie said he and his wife were avid readers and had built up a library with more than 1 000 books over the years and were looking to share their treasures with others.

Hawks drug bust nets Mandrax worth over R12 million The Hawks have carried out one of the biggest Mandrax drug busts in the country when they seized tablets with a street value of more than R12 million in a truck on the N-One north of Bloemfontein.

A man and a woman have been arrested and will appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

“We received a tip-off about drugs from Gauteng on the way to the Eastern Cape. We heard that they were at the Verkeerdevlei tollgate.

We stopped the truck and found a man and a woman inside and a hidden compartment,” says Free State Head Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Liziwe Ntshinga.

Bags containing drugs were found in the truck.

Mos Def vows to sever ties with SA Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo

King Dalindyebo has been a ‘nightmare’ Johannesburg - A well-placed source within Correctional Services has revealed that AbaThembu King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo has been refusing to wear a prison uniform since he started serving his sentence on December 30.

The source said Dalindyebo was a “headache” for the correctional service wardens.

He said Dalindyebo only wanted to eat food prepared by his family.

He said Dalindyebo was wearing Tshirts and jeans while in prison. The king was also housed in a single cell.

This comes after the Eastern Cape’s weekly newspaper Saturday Dispatch’s exposé of how Dalindyebo was receiving royal treatment at the East London Correctional Centre, including a “diet fit for a king”. The report said Dalindyebo was allowed his own bar fridge, kettle and royal menu. The source denied Dalindyebo had his own bar fridge and kettle, saying he had requested a bar fridge as an essential to store his special dietary food. “He has not been eating prison food. He only eats what is prepared by his wife,” the source said.

Allegedly, Cliff is suing Mnet for R25million and also wants the channel to reinstate him as a judge in season 12. “He is suing for R25million, including for defamation of character,” Cliff’s lawyer Eric Mabuza said.

SA Presidency issues an apology The South African Presidency has issued a correction to the recent claim by President Jacob Zuma that Africa was the biggest continent on earth.

Zuma was speaking to the business community in December 2015, and said “this continent is the biggest continent in the world”.

“All continents put together will fit into Africa,” he said.

“Africa is in fact the second biggest continent in terms of population size, and the biggest continent in this regard is Asia,” said the Presidency.

“According to the United Nations World Population Prospects 2015, 60% of the world population lives in Asia (4.4 billion), 16% in Africa (1.2 billion), 10% in Europe (737 million), 9% in Latin America and the Caribbean (634 million), and the remaining 5% in North America (358 million) and Oceania (39 million).”

SA not ready for another unaffordable tariff hike

T

he RCA process reconciles variances between the actual costs that Eskom incurred in 2013/2014 financial year in the production of electricity and the MYPD3 record of decision by Nersa.

Eskom has submitted an RCA application to recover R22.8bn, which it said is driven substantially by revenue under-recoveries, higher expenditure on coal burn, Independent Power Producers (IPPs), Open Cycle Gas Turbines and other primary energy costs.

“Eskom’s mandate is to provide electricity to support the economy. We are sensitive to the impact the RCA submission has on the wider economy. To this end, we have not claimed R10.5bn of costs incurred by Eskom that are not recoverable under current RCA methodology,” Eskom said on the first day of the public hearings in Cape Town.

Leslie Rencontre, director of electricity at the City of Cape Town, told Nersa the adjustment would mean all cities in South Africa would face an electricity tariff increase of at least 16% in July.

The bulk of the R22.8bn adjustment Eskom is asking for, is made up of reduced revenues of R11.7bn and increased primary energy costs of R14.4bn.

“Electricity prices are already

high for business and residential consumers, including the poor,” Rencontre said.

“Any additional increase approved by Nersa will have a further negative impact on Cape Town’s economy.”

At the hearings the SA Local Government Association (Salga) told Nersa the big question is whether the South African economy and South Africans are ready for another unaffordable electricity increase at this point.

Salga said it understands and accepts the RCA process, but it has unintended consequences and defeats the purpose of having a 5-year multi-year price determination. In Salga’s view the RCA process, therefore, creates uncertainty and instability, which could end up punishing consumers because of “bad planning and grossly inaccurate projections” on the part of Eskom.

Business is no longer able to absorb further electricity tariff hikes, particularly given the impact on an already weak South African economy, Virgin Active SA told Nersa in its presentation at the hearing.

“A further tariff increase has a massive compounding effect and is baked into the base forever.

Compound effects of previous years’ increases should be more than sufficient for Eskom,” the company said.

Ethiopia drought ‘as bad for children as Syria’s war’ ETHIOPIA - The UN says the worst drought in 30 years in Ethiopia means 400,000 children are suffering from severe acute malnutrition and more than 10 million people need food aid.

It has appealed for a $50m cash injection to help the country to deal with its worst drought in decades.

Save the Children, the international non-governmental organisation, says the drought in Ethiopia represents as big a potential threat to children’s lives as the war in Syria.

“We only have two emergencies in the world that we have categorised as category one. Syria is one and Ethiopia is the second. And so we’ve said we need to raise $100m for this response,” said Carolyn Miles, chief executive of Save the Children, US. Al Jazeera’s Charles Stratford, reporting from Afar region in eastern Ethiopia, says the government and international donors have already put in hundreds of millions of dollars to try to help, but aid agencies say it just is not enough.

Mohammed Dubahala, a father of ten, used to have 53 cows; he has only five now.

He received two government food handouts over recent months but says it is not enough because of the scale of the drought.

“I am afraid for the people now and I am afraid for the children because there is no rain, and if there is no rain, people die. There is no food, there is no milk,” Dubahala said.

DAR ES SALAAM - John Pombe Magufuli may have been a compromise candidate, but less than three months after taking over as Tanzania’s president, his radical reforms have the region in awe. Many east Africans are hoping for the “Magufulification” of their countries as they watch the 56-year-old cut perks to officials, channel funding to public services and tackle corruption.

Some measures are less popular as he has expelled slum dwellers and cracked down on migrants who are in the country illegally.

One of Magufuli’s first acts was to cancel the Independence Day celebrations on December 9, saying it was “shameful that we’re spending money on independence when our people are dying of cholera”. He diverted the budget of $1.9m to expanding a congested road and street cleaning, replacing the independence celebrations with a National Day of Cleanliness during which he collected rubbish himself.

Magufuli scaled down the inauguration of the new parliament, channelling 200 million shillings to the Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam to buy beds for patients.

He uses a car instead of a jet to travel around the country, and has banned all but the most essential foreign travel for officials, instead ordering them to visit rural areas to find out about problems there. In the October elections, Magufuli was a compromise candidate for the Chama Cha Mapinduzi party, which has dominated politics since the country’s independence in 1961.

FREETOWN - More than 100 people have been quarantined in Sierra Leone after coming in contact with a woman who died of Ebola last week, highlighting the potential for the disease to spread, just as the deadliest outbreak on record appeared to be over.

The World Health Organization (WHO) last week declared that “all known chains of transmission have been stopped in West Africa” after Liberia joined Sierra Leone and Guinea in going six weeks with no reported new cases of Ebola.

At the same time, it warned of possible flare-ups as survivors can carry the virus for months.

Just after the WHO announcement on Thursday, tests revealed that Mariatu Jalloh, a 22-year-old student, died of Ebola on January 12. Her death has concerned health experts because authorities failed to follow basic protocols, according to a health report seen by Reuters last week.

The report stated that she lived in a house with 22 people while she was unwell.

Five people were involved in washing her corpse, a practice that is considered one of the chief modes of Ebola transmission.

The Ministry of Health and the Office

of National Security said in a joint statement that 109 people have so far been quarantined, 28 of whom were high-risk cases.

“An active case investigation continues in the four districts where the young woman was known to have traveled,” the statement said.

The source of the transmission remains unclear, though in late December the woman traveled near to the border with Guinea, one of the country’s last Ebola hot spots before it was declared Ebolafree on November 7.

The case is a blow for Sierra Leone which, alongside Guinea and Liberia, has borne the brunt of a two-year epidemic that killed more than 11,300 people.

It has also caused anger. In apparent frustration at the latest case, the homes of some high risk patients were attacked this weekend in Magburaka, the city about 200 km (120 miles) east of Freetown where Jalloh died, and in one case a hut was burned down, according to a local leader.

Nigerian Air Force to double intake in 2016 NIGERIA - The Nigerian Air Forces recently stated that its 2016 recruitment is targeted at doubling the number of fresh intakes in its previous enlistments.

A statement by Air Force spokesman Group Captain Ayodele Famuyiwa said, The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, made the disclosure recently in Enugu when he went to the state of facilities at the International Helicopter Flying School (IHFS) and 95 Helicopter Combat Training School (95 HCTG) among other NAF establishments in the state.

Famuyiwa said “the projection for 2016 is to recruit about 2,100 personnel.” The Air force statement also said a 30-man BMATT team had since arrived Nigeria on 3 January 2016 to train the first batch of NAF Regiment personnel, comprising ‘4 officers and 100 airmen’ at the Ground Training Centre, Kaduna. The 3-week training programme is said to be focusing on airfield defence and critical assets protection, and would be rounding up on 28 January 2016.

teph Curry scored 35 points as the Golden State Warriors dished out the heaviest home defeat of LeBron James’ career with a 132-98 pummeling of the Cleveland Cavaliers in a match played recently.

The eagerly anticipated rematch between the reigning NBA champion Warriors and last year’s beaten finalists turned into a night to forget for James and the Cavaliers as Golden State ran riot. Curry was tormentor-in-chief as he returned to the stadium where he helped the Warriors clinch last year’s NBA title. The silkyskilled 27-year-old point guard had reportedly angered certain Cavaliers players in the build-up by joking that he hoped the locker room “still smells a little bit like champagne.” But any plans the Cavaliers had to make Curry regret his choice of words were torn up within a few minutes of the tip-off as the Warriors raced into an early lead and never looked back.

By the fourth quarter the Cavaliers trailed by a mammoth 43 points – the largest deficit James has failed at any point in his 1 127 career. The 34-point loss was the heaviest margin of defeat James has ever suffered in a home defeat according to ESPN Statistics. The dominance of the Warriors proved too much for James at one point, with the superstar losing his composure in an off-theball tussle with Curry who ended up being grappled to the floor. w James finished with 16 points, but his personal tally was an irrelevance on a night which finished with dejected Cavaliers fans leaving the Quicken Loans Arena well before the end.

Looking back at the career of Mondli Cele

ele was born in Durban, KwaZulu Natal on the 18th of March 1989.

The utility player made his name while playing for Second Division side Gamalakhe, and in 2014, Cele was scouted by the then assistant coach Mandla Ncikazi during his team’s Nedbank Cup clash with Santos in Cape Town.

He was invited to train with the Team of Choice and returned to the KwaZulu Natal capital for pre-season before signing a professional contract at the start of the 2014/15 PSL campaign.

Reacting to his move to Maritzburg United two months later, Cele said: “I was very happy with the opportunity the technical team gave me – it’s very difficult for players from the Second Division to get a chance in the PSL, it does not happen a lot. For

me it was a life-changing opportunity, I had the hunger to play at this level, and I was determined to make the most of the chance.”

Cele made his professional debut against Mamelodi Sundowns on August 8, 2014. He won his side a penalty which was converted by Mohamed Awal in the 89th minute of the 1-1 draw in Tshwane.

The speedy right winger scored his first professional goal as United thumped Platinum Stars 3-1 on the 18th of October 2014. His second goal came a week later against SuperSport United. Cele featured in 29 of his side’s 30 league games on his debut season, scoring three goals and assisting in the other three.

This season, Cele had made eight appearances for the Pietermaritzburg-based outfit and scored twice.

Cele had not represented the national team at the time of his passing.
