olice and inhabitants of a dilapidated building in Johannesburg Inner City played a game of cat and mouse as those suspected of being involved in criminality tried to escape arrest during a raid and crime prevention blitz on Thursday.

Dozens of people were arrested and some knives and ‘pangas’ were found during a raid on the rotting building on the corner of Jeppe Street and Nugget Street. This building is in a bad state with some charred walls, broken windows and covered in rotting litter. It has no running water and no electricity.

Police also confiscated a small generator.

Some men scaled the balcony walls of a neighbouring building in an effort to escape, but one (pictured) fell awkwardly and could not get up due to sustained injuries.

This is the same building, where Inner City Gazette reported that the body of a naked woman was found dead two week ago.

Johannesburg Central Police Station spokesperson Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele confirmed that the building was problematic as thugs used it as a hideout.

“This building is a problem. We have conducted many raids here as people complain about the crime

around the building. People get robbed and thugs run in here, even if they do not stay here. They know their victims would not dare venture inside looking for them,” said Mbele.

“We have arrested many people from this building. Unfortunately we cannot close the building so people keep coming back,” said Mbele.

When police left, the squatters shouted “see you next time” while others started lifting loose pavement slabs where their “stash” was hidden. Many onlookers lamented that the building should be closed down and no one should be allowed to re-enter. Full arrest statistics were not available by the time of going to print.

A green space in the heart of the inner city

T

he Johannesburg Development Agency’s (JDA’s) project to upgrade Alec Gorschel Park, situated less than two blocks away from the Hillbrow Tower, is fast nearing completion.

The project forms part of the JDA’s Hillbrow Tower Precinct public environment upgrade work, and is in line with City of Joburg’s Inner City Roadmap, which seeks to create a liveable inner city through the establishment, among other things, of a network of green public spaces in the CBD. The new park will add to a growing list of green spaces upgraded or newly created in the inner city by the JDA, including the award-winning Metro Park in Newtown, which opened in

September 2014.

The Alec Gorschel Park upgrade, which got under way in June 2015 and is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2016, will give local residents a pleasant, secure, functional venue for breathing, relaxing, socialising, playing and getting in some exercise.

Youngsters will be delighted with the sports facilities on offer, including two astroturf 5-aside soccer fields, full-size basketball and netball courts, and a skateboard park.

For the fitness enthusiasts, there’s a fully equipped outdoor gym, and for the kids there’s an outdoor climbing barn and plenty of rubberised surface play equipment.

Johannesburg – The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) says it’s unfortunate that Generations: The Legacy actor Rapulana Seiphemo was involved in a serious car crash at a time when the broadcaster plans to grow the local soapie.

The actor, who plays the role of Tau Mogale, was traveling on the N14 near Centurion when the car he was travelling in collided with another vehicle.

Two people were killed and three seriously injured in the accident.

SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said the timing of the crash was unfortunate.

“We are saddened that it happened at the time when we are trying to make sure Generations retain its number one spot.”

He says the broadcaster hopes Seiphemo will recover soon.

“We have been to the hospital to see him and we hope he recovers soon.”

The actor’s family has described the mishap as a difficult time as they await updates on his condition from doctors.

Family spokesperson Mduduzi Sikhakhane said, “I can confirm that he is in hospital and is being treated.”

ighters for the Nigerian Islamist militant group Boko Haram have been trained in Somalia on Africa’s eastern coast before returning to West Africa, Somalia’s president told a security conference in Germany recently.

There is proof and evidence that (for) some time Boko Haram has been trained in Somalia and they went back to Nigeria,” he said.

It was not clear from his comments whether he believed al Shabaab was still training Boko Haram fighters, who have pledged allegiance to Islamic State militants in Syria and Iraq.

Luanda - A total of 241 people were now infected, the southern African country’s national director of public health, Adelaide de Carvalho, said. More than 450,000 people had been vaccinated in the capital of a target of nearly 1.6 million, Carvalho added.

The centre of the outbreak is the capital Luanda’s eastern suburb of Viana where 29 deaths and 92 cases have been reported over the past six weeks, she said.

There is no specific treatment for the viral haemorrhagic disease which is transmitted by infected mosquitoes and found in tropical regions of Africa and Latin America’s Amazon region.

Yellow fever symptoms include severe headache, nausea, vomiting and fatigue, according to the World Health Organization.

The disease can enter a toxic phase in some people, leading to organ failure and death.

Poor sanitation is being blamed for stoking the outbreak, by providing fertile breeding grounds for mosquitos. Angola lies in the yellow fever belt of Africa where vaccination against the disease is recommended.

From bread seller to top model ► A street vendor in Nigeria’s commercial city, Lagos, has caught the at-

tention of Twitter users after she accidentally walked onto the set of a photo shoot featuring rap artist Tinie Tempah. Since then, Olajumoke, a trained hairdresser, has been offered internships at various hairdressers in Lagos and received modelling contracts.

Lagos - It’s a classic case of being in the right place at the right time. A young street seller oblivious to the scene ahead, her wares perched atop her head, photobombed a shoot and in that split second her life changed forever.

Jumoke Orisaguna is a mother of two who used to walk the streets of Lagos selling bread.

Originally a hairstylist from Osun State, south west Nigeria, she was struggling to make ends meet, and left her husband and two children in their home town to become a street vendor in the economic capital. Working from 2:30pm to 11:00pm selling bread, Jumoke would make less than US$20 each day - with a

profit of around US$1.

Now she’s about to become a top model, signed to a modeling agency and gaining international fame and prominence.

“When the photographs landed for the first time on social media, everyone immediately thought she was a model,” Bello explains.

“No one believed she just walked past. It occurred to me that if everyone thought she should be a model then maybe she should be one, then the search for her began.” A contract with few agencies followed and soon Jumoke’s face will appear on billboards after landing a lucrative contract.

outh African clubs recorded mixed results on the opening weekend of CAF Champions League action after Mamelodi Sundowns lost 1-0 to Chicken Inn in Zimbabwe and Kaizer Chiefs trounced hosts Volcan 4-0 in the Comoros Island.

SARU keep Jurie Roux Roux who is at the centre of a financial mismanagement scandal is accused of diverting as much as R35-million to the Maties Rugby Club while in office as chairman

CAPE TOWN – The South African Rugby Union (Saru) seem to have done an about turn on their stance on underfire CEO Jurie Roux.

In less than three weeks Saru have issued three separate statements on the matter.

On January 29, the union refuted claims it was aware of Roux’s involvement at Stellenbosch University when they appointed him as CEO in 2010.

Following the Executive Council’s meeting in February, an inconclusive one-liner was released only saying the meeting had been adjourned but now rugby’s governing rugby body says it was decided at that February meeting to approach a corporate governance specialist.

This would be to give recommendation on governance processes and fiduciary responsibility due to matters arising from the saga.

Saru initially turned a blind eye to Roux’s alleged offence when reports first surfaced in 2014.

The beleaguered CEO signed a five-year contract renewal keeping him at the union until 2020.

At R3-million per year and with the new contract having started in October 2015, Saru may now be liable for a R15-million pay out to Roux if they suspend him for his alleged involvement in financial irregularities.
