Burst pipe leaves residents without WATER for 3 DAYS

burg’s Water Services Department, the maintenance team managed to isolate the supply in the early hours of Wednesday and begun excavation.

Fibre cables and network cables also had to be removed to access the burst area.

Welding was done around 1430hrs in the afternoon, however progress was interrupted due to rainfall in the late afternoon, however the repairs were successfully completed by midnight.

Lower lying areas were the first to recieve

water supply.

Joburg Water said that, it is committed to provide sustainable water to allresidents of the City of Johannesburg and thus it urges its valued customers to report all leaks on: 011 375 5555.

Finding it difficult to save, these could be the reasons

rocrastinating to save can derail you from achieving your financial goals. People who have a healthy relationship with money understand that saving has very little to do with the size of your bank account, it all depends on your relationship with money.

Eunice Sibiya, Head of Consumer Education at FNB, says “Most people would like to save because they understand the financial benefits of having a safety net.

However, saving usually takes the back seat simply because of the hesitation to make sacrifices. Understandably, consumers are hard pressed financially, but the essence of saving is starting small then building up from there.”

“If you are unable to save, perhaps it’s time to conduct an introspection of the relationship you have with money,” adds Sibiya.

Sibiya believes these could be some of the reason you are unable to save: Poor attitude towards money A poor relationship with money is characterised by aimless spending on things that will have no bearing on your long-term financial future.

This may include taking debt to finance your lifestyle or overspending on things such as entertainment and clothes. It’s important to pay attention to how and what you spend your

money on and ask yourself if you are deriving any value from such expenses.

Lack of financial goals Without setting goals you are unlikely to get very far with your finances; this is simply because money leaves your account as quickly as it came in because of frivolous spending. When you have goals and are fully committed, you are able to plan your finances according to what you want to achieve.

Not asking for help It’s advisable to consult a financial advisor to help you chart a way forward for your financial future, especially if you are struggling to prioritise. Not being able to save now does not mean the situation cannot be turned around. For example, if you are over indebted you may have to focus on clearing your debt before you start committing yourself to saving.

Being governed by YOLO Yes, it’s true that you only live once (YOLO) but this also means you have a single lifetime to make your money work for you. It’s important to take the future into consideration when dealing with money, if you don’t save for both short and long-term goals you may end up financially constrained in future.

Have financial future plans and avoid living in the moment.

Procrastination Saving is a necessity, and this applies to everyone whether you have a lot of money or not, you still need to save. Postponing the decision to save will only put you in a compromising financial position. For exam-

ple, if you have an emergency you may not be able to fund it from your own pocket because you have no money set aside for emergencies.

This can lead you to debt in order to deal with the emergency.

“Being able to save does not nec-

essarily mean putting large sums of money aside, it’s possible to start small and build up from there. South Africans are notorious for not saving, so to correct this perception, the only solution is change of attitude towards money,” concludes Sibiya.

motional tributes to anti-apartheid activist Winnie Madikizela-Mandela poured in on Wednesday during an hourslong memorial service attended by thousands at Soweto’s Orlando Stadium. Madikizela-Mandela died on April 2 at the age of 81.

“The embodiment of courage. The embodiment of resilience. The embodiment of strength,” poet and singer Mzwakhe Mbuli said during a performance at the service. “There’s no grave big enough to bury her legacy.”

Mooki Street will be blocked off between Soweto Highway and Sofasonke Street, and Klipspruitvalley Road will be closed between N17 Circle and Khumalo Street.

“At about 12pm, the funeral procession will leave Orlando Stadium and join the N1 north freeway.

It will go left at William Nicol, left at Witkoppen Road, Right at Cedar Road and onto a private road into Fourways Memorial. Officers will be deployed around the route to direct traffic.

The procession is expected to proceed from 12pm to 1.30pm,” says Chief Superintendent Minnaar.

Mourners will not be allowed to drive through cordoned-off areas

The funeral service will start at 6am at Madikizela-Mandela’s Orlando West home before the official service at 9am at the stadium. The funeral service is expected to be attended by dignitaries from across the world. and will have to park at Nasrec.

They will then be ferried by buses to the stadium. The roads will be reopened at 6pm. The Rea Vaya bus route will not be affected. Transport will be deployed from 4.30am to 9am. The funeral service will start at 6am at Madikizela-Mandela’s Orlando West home before the official service at 9am at the stadium. The funeral service is expected to be attended by dignitaries from across the world.

Officials say the children, aged between three and 10, were playing near the wall earlier on Monday when it caved in on Davies Street.

Emergency Services Robert Mulaudzi said: “Our resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful and they were later confirmed dead on the scene. At the moment, we’re trying to remove some unstable walls so that we can prevent the second collapse of that building.”

“We just want to urge our motorists who are driving around Doornfontein to avoid Davies Street as it has been closed while we’re working on site,” he said.

He says the disused building was declared unsafe for inhabitation but illegal structures were erected inside.

The Socio-Economic Rights Institute of South Africa (SERI) in a statement said, it had been asking the City of Joburg for emergency accommodation for eight months, but none had been provided.

“The residents have been aware that the building is unsafe for some time. Since mid-2017, SERI has been pressing the city to provide the residents with emergency accommodation, which would have allowed them to move out of

the dangerous building to safer accommodation elsewhere.

“In July 2017, city officials produced a report for mayor Herman Mashaba, strongly recommending that the residents be provided with alternative accommodation. The city did an audit of the residents in August 2017. Yet, for eight months thereafter, the City has taken no steps to provide the residents with a safe alternative. The residents were left in unsafe accommodation as a result.

SERI added that: “The residents are just 300 of an estimated 100 000 people living in abandoned properties in the inner-city, many in unsafe conditions. The occupiers of these properties are forced to live in abandoned buildings because they cannot afford to rent or buy housing on the private market, and the city has failed to provide affordable rental housing or shelter accommodation for them.

“The city has a Constitutional duty to provide the residents of 39 to 41 Davies Street, and people like them, with affordable, safe alternative accommodation, but has consistently failed to do so. The city’s plans are to provide a mere 364 new beds in temporary accommodation this year. That is a tiny fraction of what is required to cater for poor people living in Johannesburg’s abandoned buildings.” Adding to this was SERI’s director of litigation Nomzamo Zondo, who said: “The city must do better. It is

not acceptable that there is literally no accommodation available for people, such as the residents, who are living in profoundly unsafe conditions.

“Tragedies like the wall collapse could be avoided if the City allocated more resources to basic, safe and decent accommodation to very poor people, such as the residents of Davies Street, as it is legally required to do”.

The kids were playing at the time of

the tragedy.

A fourth child survived.

Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba says that investigations are underway.

“I’m more than disappointed. I’m angry because the reason why I’m angry is because this is an accident that could have been avoided.”

At the same time, Public Safety MMC Michael Sun says it’s been very difficult to convince people not

to live in many of the dilapidated buildings in the city.

“Going forward, I think we need to deal with these situations without any delays. It’s very difficult to persuade or convince people not to occupy these buildings but they keep on coming back.

“I believe the owner of the building is here; we really need to speak to him,” Mashaba said.

Multi-stakeholder raids to intensify in the Inner-City

ourteen suspects were arrested yesterday during a crime-prevention operation was conducted in Yeoville, Hillbrow and Berea. One hijacked property and Wimbledon Court was targeted during the operation. The operation was led by the South African Police Service (SAPS) Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Deliwe de Lange, in conjunction with the City’s Group Forensic and Investigation Service (GFIS) Unit, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD),

Department of Home Affairs, the City’s Environmental Health and Social Development Departments and Emergency Management Services (EMS). Four suspects were arrested for illegal possession of drugs, one suspect was arrested for being in possession of a dangerous weapon, five suspects for dealing in second-hand goods without a valid certificate, one for drunk driving and three undocumented foreigners were also arrested. Fifteen warnings of non-compliance to EMS by-laws were also issued and 0,078kg of dagga, a toy gun and nyaope pipes were found abandoned.

The Executive Mayor of the City of Johan-

nesburg, Cllr Herman Mashaba, warned residents to expect more operations to bring the rule of law in the inner city.

“We are going to intensify these multi-stakeholder raids. Criminals must know that they might run but there is no place for them to hide in Johannesburg,” said Mayor Mashaba.

The City has conducted an audit of 500 bad buildings, of which about 300 are confirmed as hijacked. The total number of properties that have been handed back to the rightful owners is 22. Fifteen property hijackers have been arrested.

“It is essential that we bring back the rule

of law to our City and take it back from the criminal elements such as landlords who take advantage of desperate people and house them under deplorable conditions.

“We are committed to ensuring that we stop the rot in our inner city and make it a prosperous and inclusive place for our people to live work and play. I would like to thank all the roleplayers involved in yesterday’s successful operation,” said Mayor Mashaba.

He extended his gratitude to Lieutenant-General De Lange for establishing a dedicated team that will investigate property hijackings in conjunction with the City.
