JMPD officer’s assault condemned

A

taxi driver has been arrested after he allegedly rammed his minibus taxi into a female Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officer who stopped him in morning traffic on Friday.

The roadside brawl began on Friday morning while the officer and two colleagues were directing traffic. According to a statement released by the City of Johannesburg, when the female officer stopped a white Toyota minibus taxi the driver began swearing at her.

“When the officer turned her back to direct traffic, the taxi driver accelerated and smashed into the officer. The female officer had to hold on to the windscreen wipers to refrain from been dragged underneath the taxi,” a statement from JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said.

When one of her colleagues managed to stop the taxi, the officer had already been dragged for several metres. According to Minnaar, the driver at first refused to get out of the vehicle, continuing to swear and locking himself inside. However, after a few minutes of arguing, the driver got out of the vehicle and took a swing at one of the male

officers. While the male officer avoided serious injury, the driver then turned his focus to the female officer,

headbutting her and then continuing to punch her.

As the two male officers tried to restrain the taxi driv-

er, other taxi drivers in the area got out of their vehicles and formed a mob, surrounding the officers in what Minnaar described as a “life-threatening situation”.

“In response, the officers drew their service firearms to stabilise the situation,” he said.

However, when JMPD back-up arrived on the scene, the mob of taxi drivers fled, with only the taxi driver who had started the attack arrested at the scene. The female officer was rushed to hospital after sustaining injuries to her left arm, leg, face and back. She was also treated for concussion.

Minnaar, who spoke to the officer at the hospital, said that she initially struggled to talk because of her head injuries.

After describing the incident to Minnaar and other officials, the officer said she was concerned that a member of the public was willing to brazenly attack an officer in uniform.

“She couldn’t believe what he had done. She was also shocked that bystanders were filming her and not helping her,” said Minnaar.

Joburg mayor Herman Mashaba yesterday condemned what he described as a senseless act of violence against officers of the law.

“An attack on our JMPD officers is not only an attack on our government, but an attack on our efforts to return the rule of law in our city. It is an attack on the people of our city, who are desperate to feel safe in their homes, communities and streets.

“For years a culture of lawlessness was allowed

to fester in our city and it falls to society as a whole to declare that enough is enough,” Mashaba said.

In a statement from the City of Joburg, it was revealed that the council and JMPD would be making representations to the National Prosecuting Authority opposing bail for the arrested taxi driver and any other arrests of those who assisted in the incident.

“The city condemns the criminal and cowardly behaviour of the taxi drivers involved and will ensure that they are arrested and made to face the full might of the law,” the statement read.

People who took to social media to comment on the attack said, “We need tough laws in this country,imagine being a cop and you dont feel safe?Such behavior needs to stop,” said one twitter user.

“Thank you for making time to be with her Mr Mayor, I’m sure it meant a lot to her to know she’s cared for. May the law make an example of this animal who did this to her,” added another.

CityKidz learners celebrate Mandela Day

ityKidz learners and parents commemorated Mandela Day in style again showing their unbelievable, generous and compassionate collective spirit.

“We were overwhelmed with the positive response to our request for donations to Woodrock Animal Sanctuary and Kitty and Puppy Haven,” said City Kidz principal, Sharon Reynolds.

Kitty and Puppy Haven who provide animals with love and place them in loving homes, have sadly lost their home to a devastating fire recently.

Absolutely everything was destroyed. Luckily the animals were saved, but they are in desperate need of food, blankets and bedding.

Woodrock believes that each animal deserves a loving, stable “forever home”. Woodrock Animal Rescue provide assistance to unfortunate, homeless, abused, neglected, stray and unwanted animals that would otherwise have miserable lives and premature deaths. The rescue centre provides food, necessary medical care and preventative medicine.

CityKidz learners and parents put up an effort to raise the following items; • Dog treats like beanos, dentastix, liver bread • Puppy and kitty toys • Tins of sardines for cats • Fowl mix • Dog collars (new or second hand)

• Cat scratch pads • Automatic machine washing powder • Dish washing liquid • Brooms/mops/cleaning rags • Methylated spirits • Rubber gloves for workers when cleaning • Toilet rolls • Big black dustbins • Big black bin bags • Large buckets • Large water bowls.

“Thanks to Woodrock for visiting our school and bringing home the important message as we celebrated Mandela Day of caring for animals.

The children enjoyed the educational presentation and getting to touch dogs and puppies,” she concluded.

Plans to upgrade BRT stations underway

I

n a bid to ensure that the City’s transport infrastructure and Rea Vaya commuters are at all times safe, the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Control Room is relocating as part of the expansion plans.

The Metro Trading Company (MTC) is spearheading the relocation of the Control Room, which is currently situated in Sauer Streetin the inner-city.

MTC’s field service technician Sipho Phakade explains that the move to relocate the Control Room to its new residence in Selby, is important and forms part of the expansion plans.

The entire project is carried by MTC on behalf of BRT. “The relocation is necessitated by the fact that, the CCTV cameras in BRT stations are linked to the contact centre, so there is a need for proper space for operations,” says Phakade.

From the Control Room, officials are able to monitor all the Rea Vaya buses, the bus stations, routes to check traffic and providing security making it safer for commute The project is predicted to run until August 2018, MTC will be responsible for the following: 1. Those manning the stalls come from all over the City of Gold, and are happy to engage with local shoppers and share their inspiration. The stalls include a range of food- and design-centric items, making for a fun and varied market experience.

The focus of Arts on Main is on learning about and living a sustainable life. It lures young creatives that are passionate about green and nat-

urally-produced goods. Food forms a major part of the offering of this market and hungry visitors can look forward to sampling and buying amazing organic produce, home-baked fare, fresh juices, sushi, South African produce and exotic flavours. Craft beers add a little something special to the market.

Of course, local designers also come from far and wide to exhibit their awesome goods.

These range from leather pieces, jewellery, clothing, designer pieces and vintage-style favourites.

The space in which exhibitors are able to sell their goods is eclectic. Having been built in the early 1900’s, the warehouse has since been renovated. This gives it an air of old-world industry combined with modern design. The entire ground-floor space is dedicated to food and local produce, while the clothing and design items can be found upstairs.

Local urban rejuvenation combines with a central location to ensure that Moboneng’s Arts on Main provides one of the hippest market attractions in Johannesburg.

Currupt cop arrested

he Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department Fraud and Anti-Corruption Unit arrested a corrupt Metro Police officer today for bribery and corruption.

The Internal Affairs Unit received a complaint via the Anti Corruption hotline 0800 203 713 of a Metro Police Officer who wanted R200 from a motorist not to charge him for an expired licence disc.

The investigators from Internal Af-

fairs followed up on the complaint and the complainant was advised to photograph the note and wait for the Internal Affairs Officers to arrive close to the scene.

The complainant’s ID was still with the officer waiting for the complainant to come back with the money. The photographed money was handed over by the complainant to the corrupt Metro Police Officer as requested in exchange for his ID card.

The complainant left and Internal Affairs members intercepted, at first the

officer denied taking the money. The officer was taken to the Internal Affairs offices to be searched and the corrupt officer was also identified by the complainant on scene.

The photographed R200 note was found on the officer. He was placed under arrest and taken to Hillbrow SAPS for detention.

The Chief of Police Mr David Tembe welcomed the arrest of the officer and said –“bribery corruption undermines our efforts of fighting lawlessness and restoring law and order”

oburg’s biggest walking event, the MTN 702 Walk the Talk, was filled with music, bright yellow outfits and walkers of course.

Over 50,0000 participants braved the chilly morning in Emmarentia to paint the streets of Johannesburg yellow!

Many people have chosen to use the event to walk for charity or a cause, while others walk just for

fun. The most popular walk is the 5km, with many taking their children and friends on the route.

Radio 702 hosts Kenny Maistry, Azania Mosaka, Tshego Modisane, Bruce Whitfield and more kept the crowds entertained with live crossings and music.

As crowds streamed across the finish line, some headed for the hospitality fields or massage tent.
