xecutive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg Cllr Herman Mashaba handed over keys to beneficiaries of newly completed units at the City of Johannesburg’s South Hills development.

“This marks a momentous occasion, as some of the beneficiaries have remained on the housing waiting list since 1996. As a new administration we are making progressive strides in ensuring that our people receive the dignity of having a home,” said Cllr Mashaba.

According to the City’s housing department the completion of the development will yield a total of 6204 family and single occupation units for RDP, community residential units, bonded rental and social housing.

“Working together with our coalition partners, we are gradually delivering the change that the residents of our city voted for. Our residents want to see Diphetogo [change], in their communities.

This is what we intend to deliver.

“In working towards achieving

this, our multi-party coalition government has: • invested the largest share of the capital budget for roads, transport, housing, electricity and water, going up from 54% in 2016/17 to 69% in 2018/19, • allocated R120 million to site and service schemes (double the previous year’s allocation) to provide serviced sites onto which beneficiaries can be settled with full ownership, • aimed to accelerate the formalization of informal settlements, by investing R14 million for the purpose of embarking on a consolidated planning program for informal settlements across the City, • set aside R50 million for the upgrading of inner city emergency housing and rental stock, • set aside R46 million for the acquisition of buildings in the inner city for the purpose of creating affordable housing for residents, • set aside R117 million for the electrification of informal settlements, • launched free Community Substance Abuse Treatment Centres

within the city in order to fight the scourge of substance abuse in communities whilst also launching extended operating hours within our 13 of our clinics, and • invested in the increased safety of communities, by recruiting 1500 trainee JMPD officers who will join our law enforcement efforts.”

These are just some of the changes highlighted by the Mayor as the City works for its residents.

“This said, I am also proud of the strides the City is set to make providing housing through the transformation of the inner city.

“The launch of the 71 Properties Prospectus earlier this month is an indication of my commitment to bringing change to our communities as not only will it create jobs but also provide homes within the inner city.

“Together with the ongoing support of our coalition partner, I will continue to work tirelessly to remain accountable on my promise to deliver social housing that instills dignity for residents of this City to live, work and play,” concluded Mayor Mashaba.

A creative career with graphics and animation “M

What is animation? any believe it’s just cartoons but actually, this is a medium in which different objects or images are manipulated to appear as moving images. These images are traditionally drawn by hand or digitally with thanks to modern technology”. So says Mahendra Naidoo, animation lecturer at Boston Media House in Sandton.

What is graphic design?

focused because what is learnt in graphic design can be confusing.” According to Hattingh, these two fields both manifest as a way of expression - of telling a story as a way of getting a message across.

So what is the difference between animation and graphic design?

Naidoo says that one might think that Animation and Graphic designare based mainly and strongly on 2D aspects -think ‘flat’ drawing - and a lot of advertising. “Actually animation is

based on 2D and 3D aspects - these allow the window to open further and the opportunities for creativity to grow, becoming vast and never ending” he says.

Naidoo explains that there are many different types of animation studios in South Africa.

“The majority of themwork in very similar aspects of the field, however some specialize in certainaspects of animation. The top Animation Studio in SA is Triggerfish Animations studios, based in Cape Town”.

Hattingh discusses the work opportunities, which can be for full-time employment either in studios or advertising agencies for graduates in this field. “You can also freelance as a graphic designer and animator depending on which company you work for and the type of contract that you have signed. And of course graphic and design form a huge part of the gaming industry –opening up even more employment opportunities” he says.

Tips from Hattingh and Naidoo on what it takes to make it as a good graphic designer and animator: - Be able to work under pressure.

- Meet deadlines -so that you don’t delay production around you.

- Have excellent communication, so that you can communicate with clients.

- Be able to work as part of ateam.

- Have creativity and artistic talent - Be able to think out of the box! Approach each challenge with new thinking Qualifications - Boston Media House offers a 3 three year

“Career options are global due to the fact that your institution is internationally accredited” says Naidoo. “Animation and graphics are globally in demand skills - animation studios look for animators all the time. Entertainment and corporate companies need graphic designers as these are still growing industries even though they have been around for a long time”.

As a graphic designer or an animator you’re open to a whole new world every day. You get to work hand in hand with other industries and fields within the media industry. There are various paths open to you like public relations where you would work with designing a company’s corporate identity illustration. You could work in news rooms, marketing, and in the film and television industry as well as the music industry. You could also design movie and album covers, help in the making of 3D movies that might need some animation in it.

pplications are open for Grade 6 girl and boy learners who achieve marks of 70% and above in Maths, Science and English and come from low-income homes - to be awarded a fiveyear SSP scholarship to attend one of our 25 partner schools in South Africa.

Since 2000, non-profit trust, Student Sponsorship Programme (SSP), has given 1500 bursaries to deserving scholars to attend top independent and public high schools in the country.

The scholarships given to date are valued at R150m,to attend schools in Johannesburg, Pretoria, the KZN Midlands, Hillcrest, Grahamstown, East London and Somerset West.

The applicants must be in Grade 6, no older than 12, keen on sport and helping the community, and have leadership potential. The combined household income must not exceed R20 000 per month, to qualify to apply for the scholarship programme.

The 10-month recruitment process includes an entrance exam, interviews with the parents and guardians and includes tests to assess intellec-

tual quotient (IQ) and emotional intelligence (EQ) to conclude with a camp to see how they get on with other youngsters in a team.

SSP aims to nurture future leaders with this five-year scholarship programme which includes tuition, school uniform, sports gear, books and local excursions. The support given is not only academic and psycho-social, it also covers mentorship

Outcry over unlawful occupants “we cannot allow lawlessness to on City Properties undermine our efforts to provide proper housing” - Mashaba

he City Of Johannesburg says it has received many complaints that some properties are currently being occupied unlawfully.

The City of Johannesburg is to conduct an audit of people living in the city’s social housing and RDP accommodation to ensure that only lawful occupants are housed within them, mayor Herman Mashaba said on Sunday.

Mashaba said he had received repeated complaints that some of these properties were currently housing unlawful occupiers, including undocumented persons who were not permitted to occupy those properties by law.

The audit of people currently housed

within these properties would provide a departure point for verifying the claims made and for taking any intervention to address any unlawful conduct, he said.

“In my view, Joscho’s [Johannesburg Social Housing Company] provision of housing is one of the pivotal interventions for providing residents with the dignity of a roof over their heads with over 3000 units at their disposal. The same goes for the provision of RDP housing. This is why we cannot allow lawlessness to undermine our efforts to provide proper housing.

“It is no secret that as a city we face a housing crisis, one where approximately 300,000 units are required urgently if we are to make inroads against the housing backlog,” Mashaba said.

This coupled by an urban migration of 3000 people to Johannesburg monthly was an indication that urgent intervention was required to managing the pressures faced by the city.

“Indeed, some residents have been on the housing list since the mid-90s.

This makes the investigation into the claims made by residents all the more pressing.

“More importantly, should the claims prove substantially true we need to understand not only how this happened, but hold those responsible to account.

This said, I have requested that the final report on this audit be provided to me by the end of October 2018,” Mashaba said.

Sundowns target Horoya win

amelodi Sundowns will go to Cape Town for the first leg of the MTN8 semifinal with one eye on the Caf Champions League where they have an important clash against Horoya to determine who will join Wydad Casablanca in the quarterfinals.

The Brazilians’ hectic schedule continues with a clash against Cape Town City at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday right after playing to a goalless draw with Highlands Park on Wednesday at Loftus Versfeld in the Absa Premiership. The match against the Lions of the North came right after Sundowns returned from a gruelling contest with the reigning African champions Wydad in Morocco on Friday night.

But coach Pitso Mosimane didn’t make any excuses for Sundowns’ goalless draw with Highlands.

“It’s two points dropped, honestly speaking,” Mosimane said. “But look at the circumstances, and we tried to win. We created chances, not really big chances apart from the one that was cleared off the line from Wayne Arendse’s effort. But what can you do? We tried to play. We went into the other side. We never sat back.”

“They are the ones who didn’t want to start. They are the one who interrupted play. They are happy with the point. I saw the coach punching the air after the final whistle. I said, ‘oh, okay’, that meets their objectives to get a point here. They’re probably right to think like that.”

Sundowns will not dwell much on that draw as they have to take on the Citizens in the Mother City in the first leg before hosting them in the return leg with a place in the MTN8 final up for grabs. But Mosimane’s main priority is the tie with Horoya at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Tuesday.
