nce an abandoned area fraught with crime, Maboneng Precinct has become a thriving inner-city hub - and the most dynamic part of town. The area has evolved over the past decade, but the January ribbon cutting of Hallmark House, a slick hotel and residential complex, marks a pivotal moment, making this once-downtrodden part of town a prime spot for locals and travellers.

The area’s revitalisation is courtesy of young entrepreneur Jonathan Liebmann, a developer and the founder of Propertuity Development Company.

He started off small, purchasing a section of abandoned warehouses (now called Arts on Main) and leasing spaces to established artists and design studios. He invited local and global brands to use the warehouses as event spaces, lured acclaimed South African artist William Kentridge and art entrepreneur David Krut to occupy studio spaces, and suddenly Maboneng was on the map.

The project grew steadily, and eventually, in 2011, he christened Market on Main, a weekly bazaar with food and product stalls, to help make the neighborhood a magnet for suburbanites and out-of-towners.

Until now, Maboneng has been seen as a vibrant day-trip option - supported by rapid growth of local shops and restaurants - but by nightfall, locals retreat to their own areas, and travellers return to the comforts of Johanesburg’s leafier, ritzier areas like Westcliff, Sandton and Saxonwold.

Maboneng street art: The name Maboneng, a Sotho word meaning “place of light” Although Maboneng had some lodging offerings, such as Curiocity Backpackers and the affordable but artsy 12 Decades Hotel, the area was still missing something: a hotel worthy of the international jet set and of the neighborhood’s own clout.

Enter Propertuity’s most ambitious project yet: Hallmark House, whose exterior, communal spaces, restaurants and bars all bear the design signature of the renowned Tanzanian-born architect David Adjaye.

A modular building with a jet-black facade, Hallmark House is Adjaye’s first residential building in Africa - and, at 16 stories, it’s the new beacon of Maboneng.

But what looks daunting from the outside is very welcoming on the inside, with flats that cater to all budgets, from sprawling penthouses to studio apartments.

“It’s a mixed-income community in one building,” said Liebmann. Beyond the apartments, the hotel has 46 sleek and simple rooms; their walls are done up with enormous panels of African-patterned textiles - each different than the next - with beds, benches, and throw pillows upholstered in complementary colours.

Hallmark House’s ground floor is dedicated to communal spaces, of which the most exciting are the two just-opened restaurants, Eug’s Place

and Potluck Club; the latter a spinoff of one of Cape Town’s best restaurants.

The chef, Luke Dale Roberts, has for years been sitting on the cusp of global household status: His flagship, the Test Kitchen, is the rare African restaurant to rank among the world’s top tables.

Then there’s Loof Coffee bar, a branch of a Joburg fixture, peddling macchiatos and cortados brewed from custom-roasted beans. Underground is a jazz bar, speakeasy, and barber - the latest de rigueur amenity for any hip hotel.

In time for Johannesburg’s summer season, the building unveiled a spa and bar on the rooftop, with 360-degree views of the city. And for those keen to

plimentary shuttle, which rotates every 30 minutes, making stops at Maboneng’s pioneering destinations such as Arts on Main and MoAD (the Museum of African Design).

“For me, it’s a facilities-led, mixed-income building where there’s lots of diversity,” he said. “But one of the cool things about it is that David (Adjaye) has an apartment there,” said Liebmann.

For those who’ve spent time in LA’s downtown or London’s Shoreditch, Maboneng might seem like just another rejuvenated district.

But the scale of Maboneng’s success, considering Joburg gets only 2.5 million international visitors a year, compared to Los Angeles’s 45.5 million, is staggering.

Since 2009, the number of Propertuity commercial tenants has increased from 38 to 609, and the commercial square meterage has expanded from 4.417 to 112.537.

The number of foreigners coming into the neighborhood is also increasing.

“We are looking at an annual growth of 25 to 30 percent of international visitors. We’re getting lots of people from the UK, Germany, and the US,” said Liebmann.

For many locals, it’s a real lifeline.

“I’m from this community, and when Maboneng began, I finally saw an opportunity to make my mark,” said Bheki Dube, the founder of the Maboneng hostel Curiocity Backpackers. Now travellers can see the neighbourhood through Dube’s eyes.

In 2011, Dube started Main Street Walks, a company aimed at getting people to rediscover and engage with the surrounding area on foot.

he Auditor-General’s report on the city’s finances was tabled before council for adoption recently.

The AG report showed that the city spent its R56-billion budget for its financial year under the Democratic Alliance administration.

The city was able to maintain an unqualified opinion and improve its revenue by 4%.

Austerity measures adopted by the City of Johannesburg yielded as the city saved R487.7-million by reducing self-promoting advertising‚ marketing‚ domestic and international travel‚ consulting and professional fees‚ and conferences and seminars.

“These savings continued into the 2017/18 financial year and will be redirected into critical service delivery areas such as maintenance of traffic lights and street lights‚ repairing potholes‚ informal settlement upgrading‚ and the capacitation of key City departments such as development planning and the valuations unit.

The city achieved a surplus of R2.1-billion and closed the year

with cash and cash equivalents of R3.1-billion.

A total of five of the city’s entities received clean audits - an increase

from the previous financial year. It was the first time where Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo has achieved this feat in its 15 years of existence. During the year under review‚ the city spent only 78% of its R9.9-billion capital expenditure budget.

“We have already implemented steps to improve the planning‚ implementation and monitoring of capital projects‚ and to maximise spend and the quality of delivery through the use of a capex monitoring tool in the 2017/18 financial year‚” Mashaba said.

Mashaba said City Power suffered cash flow problems as a result of a number of issues outside of its control.

Mashaba said the city needs R170-billion for infrastructure over the next 10 years to deal with its current backlog.

The Mayor ushered praises to work done by the Group Forensic and Investigation Services led by Shadrack Sibiya which he said uncovered over R17-billion in corruption and maladministration‚ resulting in 450 people being arrested.

Staying in touch in the world of IT - a moving career

o be successful in the information technology (IT) sector, you need to ‘grow’ with technology. And the best way to do this, is to constantly upskill by keeping your studies and certifications up to date, says Shaun Hart, group IT manager at Boston City Campus & Business College.

“Every day I oversee the network of our Head Office that serves 300 people, as well as the networks, servers and systems that feed each of our 46 branches.

Because the majority of our teaching in the college is technology based, the systems are complex, dealing with over 900 course modules, that must be integrated with the personal details of close to 18000 students!

“My department is kept on its toes, travel to other cities is a necessity, and let me warn would-be IT workers that IT is not a 9-5 job!”

The college offers a wide selection of IT courses, ranging from an introduction to information technology to IT qualifications in software and security.

These IT certifications and computer courses open doors to careers such as application developer, programming specialist, cloud solutions professional, computer technician and network support technician, to name but a few.

“The best way to stay relevant in the IT market is to study further in order to keep yourself up- to-date with relevant technologies,” Hart reiterates. “Join or follow IT communities and blogs online - this keeps you informed about the latest trends in the Industry. LinkedIn, Microsoft online communities and Spiceworks are great starting points.”

Take another note from Hart’s book - he strongly recommends attending IT conferences and boot camps, as this not only allows you to get an in-depth look into new technologies and how they work, but also enables you to interact with vendors in the IT industry as well as network with IT peers.

A strong recommendation from Hart is to view job boards. These not only give you access to the latest jobs on offer, but also gives you insight as to what qualifications, skills or experience employers are actively seeking in your area of expertise. It allows you to compare yourself to what the market is currently looking for, allowing you to study further or “brush up” on skills.

In keeping with his advice, Hart is personally studying at present; he is completing training in SharePoint administration.

best practices,” he smiles.

He is reluctant to emphasise or recommend one course above another because each course has a different purpose and fulfils a different training need. However, he considers the Boston IT diplomas in network systems and systems development as ‘hot’ at the moment, along with the Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE) Private Cloud.

The diploma in IT systems development is a three-year course on NQF level 6. It focuses on systems management, analysis and design, and includes modules on project management as well as software testing.

s social media continues to gain prominence amongst South African consumers, platforms like Instagram, Youtube, Facebook and Twitter have also become a platform where fraudsters attempt to catch unsuspecting consumers off guard.

South Africa are not yet prevalent, compared to our global counterparts; the reality is that they do exist.

“Given that the popularity of social media is set to remain for the coming years, consumers are encouraged to constantly educate themselves and their loved ones about the latest methods that fraudsters use to get hold of their victims’ personal information,” adds Naidoo: Blackmail – never share personal photos or videos on social media that portray you in a compromising position as scammers can use these against you by threatening to send them to close family members or upload them on public platforms.

Phishing - beware of fraudsters pretending to represent your bank on social media platforms. Your bank will never ask for your credit or cheque card, account number, online banking login details or password or One Time PIN (OTP) on social media platforms.

Help and favours - be on high

alert when asked for special financial favours or urgent assistance by strangers, no matter how caring or persistent the individuals may seem.

Never share your banking details with strangers and think twice before sending money to someone you recently met online or haven’t met in person yet.

Dating and romance scams consumers who use social media platforms to meet companions or their life partners should lookout for fraudsters that play on emotional triggers to scam people out of their hard earned cash.

Dating and romance scammers often lower your defences by ap-

pealing to your compassionate side in order to take advantage of you.

Identity theft – avoid sharing personal information, such as ID, passport, drivers licence, payslip, bank statement, municipal or account statements on social media.

Fraudsters can steal your information and use it illegally by impersonating you.

Money laundering – scammers often trick people through social media platforms by claiming to have large sums of cash that they need to deposit urgently through a foreign bank account.

Do not allow your account to be used by another person to deposit or transact on.

This can put you in serious trouble with authorities as allowing proceeds of crime to be laundered through your bank account, knowingly or unknowingly, is a criminal offence.

Furthermore, never open a bank account in your name on behalf of a person you have met on social media platforms, irrespective of the circumstances.

“When all safety precautions are taken into account, social media remains one of the best platforms that consumers can use to keep up to date with the latest news and trends, interact and catch up with friends and family,” concludes Naidoo.

ity of Johannesburg Mayor, Herman Mashaba has suspended two employees who worked for the City’s Group Finance Department for fraudulent activities-transferring R800 000 to a company of attorneys.

The suspension follows the removal of former City of Johannesburg MMC of Finance, Cllr Rabelani Dagada on allegations of nepotism. According to a statement released from the Mayor’s office, It was found that the two were part of a syndicate of internal and external individuals, who swindled money from a customer’s account to an attorney’s trust account, before requesting the payment thereof.

“Chief among our priorities has been the process of recovering this money from the attorneys,” said Mayor Mashaba. The City will be laying criminal charges against both the

internal and external individuals in this syndicate and vowed to ensure that everyone involved faces the full might of the law.

“I am disappointed to learn that there are officials who are still involved in corrupt activities. This is despite the fact that we continuously educate employees about fraud and corruption, and despite the fact that we have made it clear that corruption will not be tolerated in the City of Johannesburg,” Mashaba said.

The City of Johannesburg will continue to have a zero tolerance for corruption under the leadership of its Executive Mayor, Cllr Herman Mashaba who says that he will continue to vigorously pursue every allegation of corruption in collaboration with institutions such as the Hawks and other organizations within the criminal justice system.

JMPD officers killed at roadblock IN SORROW

ohannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba has expressed “great sadness” at the death of two female Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officers who died when a suspected drunk driver drove into a roadblock they were manning.

“I have learnt‚ with great sadness that two female JMPD officers were fatally wounded yesterday evening whilst on duty‚” Mashaba said in a statement.

Mashaba said the city had recently launched a pilot project aimed at making JMPD officers more visible to approaching traffic while on duty‚ by wearing a bodylight device on their uniform.

“We send our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased JMPD officers‚ who were also our colleagues and friends. MMC Michael Sun and I will visit the affected families‚ as well as the injured officers in hospital‚ during the course of the day‚” Mashaba said.

While the operation was underway‚ a vehicle ploughed through the blockade and slammed into three cars. Six other people were injured.

“Over the course of the past weekend alone‚ JMPD arrested 308 drunk drivers in Johannesburg. The driver of the double cab was arrested on the scene and blood samples were taken.

“It was later confirmed that the driver was

three times over the limit‚ with more intoxicating substances found in the vehicle. He is currently detained at the Sandton police station and we will ensure that he faces the full might of the law‚ including charges for murder‚” said Mashaba.
