Man found with R300,000 fake money

he Johannesburg Metro Police Department has arrested a man it believes is involved in a fake money scheme.

Officers pulled the suspect over on the Heidelberg Road for a routine road check.

In the car, they found R30,000 in cash.

Led to a small backroom elsewhere by the suspect, officers discovered about R300,000 in forged notes.

They also found a printing machine, a paper compressor and other apparatus needed to make fake money.

The police also found notes in foreign currencies.

According to JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minnaar: “This illegal operation has been taking place for a long time because we saw the cut-offs of a lot of paper in plastic bags which were in this room.”

Police said this might be part of a bigger operation.

The suspect is in police custody and will be charged with money laundering and possession of counterfeit money.

MMC of Safety in the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Sun, applauded the officers for making the arrest and urged residents to closely check suspicious bank notes as well as report anyone circulating counterfeit money, to the police.

DA Councillor accused of nepotism, fired According to Mashaba’s allegations, The forensic investigation has found that Cllr Dagada has breached the city’s code of conduct by not declaring his interests and, subsequently, conflicts of interest with individuals closely associated with him.

ashaba said the decision to fire Dagada, was taken along with the federal executive (FedEx) of the DA after a forensic investigation was concluded on Friday by an external company that was commissioned by Mashaba late last year. Dagada has also been suspended as a councillor by the opposition party’s FedEx pending an inquiry of the DA’s federal legal commission. Mashaba said he had laid a complaint with the ethics committee of the council, as well as criminal charges against Dagada.

Further to this, “the forensic investigation has found Cllr Dagada to have been involved in price fixing with a service provider to the city, and in the process acted against his sworn duty to our residents”, read a statement.

The forensic investigation found Dagada to have acted in a manner that benefits those close to him, in a manner that Mashaba believes could not have been coincidental.

Dagada was last year implicated in a “jobs for pals” scandal in which he was alleged to have enriched his friend by facilitating access to lucrative tenders. According to reports, a service provider received a two-month contract of over R190 000, allegedly due to his long-standing relationship with Dagada.

The mayor said the investigation showed that some officials were treated unfairly and pressured to authorise procurement deals that were beneficial to those closely associated with Dagada.

Mashaba commended those who refused to engage in unlawful activities, adding that the city had initiated disciplinary action against those implicated “for their roles in the breaches of legislation and governance procedures”.

“While these actions are taken with regret, the commitment of the multi-party coalition government to rid the city of wrongdoers will not include protecting our own,” read a statement.

MMC Funzela Ngobeni has been moved from the development planning to Dagada’s position, with Soweto DA councillor Reuben Masango replacing him. Masango, an admitted attorney, was also recently appointed by Mashaba as the leader of executive business in council.

Meanwhile, the ANC greater Johannesburg region in a statement has called for the DA to fire Mashaba, who it blamed for the city’s financial woes.

The party said the decision to fire Dagada was a “feeble attempt at sidetracking from the actual issue at hand, which is the mismanagement of the city’s finances under Mashaba’s watch”.

“Mashaba’s actions are a desperate attempt to portray himself as a savior,” the party said.

“Although the DA is finally acknowledging that there is indeed a problem, they are still failing to deal with the source of the problem, Herman Mashaba.”

ember of Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Health and Social Development, Dr Mpho Phalatse, embarked on an awareness campaign at Park Station to educate members of the public about the dangers of Listeriosis following the continued spread of the disease.

As of 16 January 2018 a total of 764 Listeriosis cases have been reported across the country, with 212 from Johannesburg. 19 deaths have been reported in Johannesburg as a result of the disease.

Accompanied by the City’s health officials, MMC Phalatse engaged and educated commuters, food vendors, as well as shop owners and managers operating at Park Station on the necessary steps that should be taken to prevent the spread of Listeriosis.

“It is important that we continue to educate and inform our communities about the dangers posed by Listeriosis. If we work together and be vigilant in our own spaces we can stop the spread of Listeriosis and avoid unnecessary deaths. We

are facing huge challenges as wrong information is spreading about Listeriosis. That is why it’s important that we continue the campaign,” said Phalatse while distributing pamphlets about Listeriosis.

Phalatse said that as South Africa’s and Johannesburg’s transport Hub, Park Station was the perfect place to reach the masses as it attracts thousands of commuters from across the province and the country.

Phalatse said campaigns across the City’s seven regions will continue at key areas, including taxi ranks and clinics, to keep residents of Joburg informed.

The job of looking for a job

or most of us, looking for a job takes as much time commitment effort and energy that it becomes a job in itself!

Hopefully more of a short term one that results in obtaining something with long term prospects. So says Natalie Rabson of Boston City Campus and Business College.

“At Boston we like to groom students for this process, not only in terms of interview behaviours, but much more than that including the perseverance and discipline of a job search”, she says.

The process can be a long and challenging one and requires you to stay motivated, and put in effort!

The information provided below will help guide you through the process; it’s up to you to find the job that suits you!

“The first thing to keep in mind,” says Rabson,” is that research shows that individuals who use multiple job search methods obtain a job faster than those who use only a few. So use every opportunity that comes your way whether it’s the Church noticeboard, a sign in a

shop window, Facebook or linkedIn.” Remember to keep a list of all the positions to which you’ve applied including the company and contact names. This is important so that if someone does contact you, you have the details on hand and know what the position entails and what you offered of yourself to the company!

Rabson says that at this time of year there are many job seekers networking. There are people who may have finally decided to make the change in their job, company or career. And there are students who need to earn an income to be able to buy necessities and pay for their study fees, who will look for parttime jobs. Luckily these needs can be met with the job opportunities out there. Look out for positions in community noticeboards such as

tutoring for high school subjects, au pairing and homework with younger kids, or sales jobs. *Update your resume and set up an appointment with the Institute for Career Planning to have it reviewed. *Review cover letter samples with the Career Planning staff for guidance and feedback. *Decide upon 3-4 references to list on your reference page and let these individuals know you are job hunting. *Make sure you have a professional voice recording on the contact phone number that you’ve listed on your resume. *Be sure any MySpace or Facebook profiles are entirely private to outside viewing and that there is nothing inappropriate written about you or by you, including photos! *Be sure you have a professional/

neutral email address to use. If you don’t, create a new one!

Where Can I Learn about Job Openings? *If you are going to be studying at a University go to their Human Resource Department and look into any part time or even full time positions at the campus. Campuses often need extra assistance during peak registration times, as well as for special events, and they will also look for tutors and admin staff.

Investigate these options! *Networking with personal contacts, family friends/professionals, neighbours, etc. *Tell everyone that you are in the market for a job. *Volunteer at a company/organisation *If you are studying under the umbrella body of a professional institute call them and find out about

working at them or at one of their members. *Join LinkedIn and other job sites. *Use an internet search engine and type in keys words related to the type of position in which you are interested. *Sign up online! Post your resume and request to receive job listings. *If you see a position that interests you, respond promptly and read ads regularly. *Community agencies.

Charges laid against ANC Councillor

he African National Congress (ANC) in Johannesburg has confirmed that its regional deputy secretary will appear in the Johannesburg Commerical Cimes Court on charges of fraud and theft.

“I was informed of the arrest of ANC Councillor and former MMC

of Housing, Dan Bovu, and his accomplice for the illegal sale of a City owned property stand in Vlakfontein, South of Johannesburg.

The pair handed themselves over to the police in Lenasia,” said City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor, Herman Mashaba.

Councillor Bovu served as the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Housing under the pre-

vious administration led by Cllr Parks Tau. Bovu currently serves as Councillor for the ANC as well as its Regional Deputy Secretary General in Johannesburg and was a ward Councillor when he allegedly committed the crime in 2006.

It is alleged that the complainant was looking for a stand in the Vlakfontein area and was introduced to the second accused who allegedly told him that he was working for the Thembelihle Development Trust, which was assisting people to buy stands in the area.

The complainant was allegedly told to pay R5000 for the stand. After he paid R5000 for the stand the second accused told him to come on a weekend to choose a stand which he likes.

The complainant alleged that he started building the foundation of the house on the stand he chose.

When the walls were still being built, the complainant alleged that he was told by his builders that an ANC Councillor (Dan Bovu) stopped them from continuing with building the house. He allegedly left his contact details with the builders so that the complainant could call him.

After he contacted Dan Bovu, and visited him in his Zachariyya Park Office, Bovu allegedly told the complainant to pay a deposit of be-

tween R2000 and R4000 into the account of the Thembelihle Development Trust. The complainant allegedly paid R2000 into an account number that was given to him. He then continued to build until the building was complete.

The second complainant also allegedly approached Bovu about the sale of stands in the area. He was told that another stand in Vlakfontein was available for R4000.

The complainant allegedly paid the money into the Thembelihle Trust Account as directed by Bovu.

A few days later, Bovu allegedly demanded a further R1000 which he said was for registration with the City of Johannesburg.

The complainant alleged that he received a call from a friend congratulating him for building a house, he knew that he had not started building and went to investigate. He met with the first complainant who told him that he bought the same property stand from Bovu and his accomplice. A criminal case was then opened by the second complainant.

Upon coming into office, the multi-party coalition government became aware of this case, and tabled a motion before Council in September 2017. The motion authorised the Mayor to petition the NPA to provide reasons for why the case

had been declined for prosecution, despite what appeared to be a case with strong evidence. To the credit of the NPA, they have engaged with the call of Council and acted to ensure that Councillor Bovu has his day in court.

“I call upon former Mayor, Cllr Parks Tau, to explain to the residents of our City how this case could have been ignored for so long under his leadership,” said Mashaba.

The Mayor is also calling upon the newly elected President of the ANC, Cyril Ramaphosa, and Provincial Chairperson, Mr Paul Mashatile, to show leadership and walk the talk by taking firm action against Councillor Bovu.

“This is yet another example of how a collective majority of parties in the City of Johannesburg are working to bring about change in our City.

“Corruption has no place in this administration and we will work tirelessly, and in collaboration with institutions such as the Hawks, the SAPS and the NPA to ensure that the residents of Johannesburg receive the quality services they deserve,” Mashaba concludes.

he Students have added another player in their ranks as they look to improve their position on the PSL log in the second half of the season. Bidvest Wits have confirmed the signing of former Kaizer Chiefs left-back Keegan Ritchie, as they continue to beef up their squad for the second half of the season.

Ritchie joins the Students from SuperSport United, where he played second fiddle to Zimbabwean full-back Onismor Bhasera. He joins Lehlohonolo Majoro, Edwin Gyimah and Denis Weidlich, who all arrived earlier this year.

Ritchie only featured twice in all competitions for Matsatsantsa during the first half of the campaign.

The 27-year-old will be expected to add some much-needed steel on the left hand side of the Wits defence, where Sifiso Hlanti has been a regular. Ritchie’s PSL career has seen him play for Moroka Swallows, followed by two spells with Kaizer Chiefs, Bloemfontein Celtic and recently Matsatsantsa.
