Exciting IT bursary opportunity from the Boston Education Trust

“T

wenty years ago all our students coming for career consultations were intent on pursuing a career in Law.” So says Natalie Rabson, Skills Development Consultant at Boston City Campus & Business College. “Now, however, so many of the prospective students we see want to study IT” she says.

The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry is growing exponentially, and is clearly one of the most exciting and rapidly-expanding industries.

“I believe that this is partly because IT affects every industry, from medicine to accounting. All professions and professionals must have a good IT knowledge, not only to operate in their industry, but also to remain relevant and competitive,” says Rabson.

“Unfortunately, there is still a marked lack of female representation in the IT workforce, and we have been approached by a trust which wants to promote Black females in this industry” The Boston Education Trust has identified this area of scarce skills, with particular reference to Black females,” says Craig Stollard, one of the trustees.

“We identified this gap in labour supply and we have set a goal to rectify this by financially helping Black females to study IT. “Our goal is, on a national level, to produce IT graduates who will be work ready in their fields and be productive in the ICT sector” Stollard has identified some challenges for female IT graduates, saying that funds are clearly one of the

main issues.

Another, he says, is geographical in nature. “Because Boston has 45campuses nationally, we created easier access for those wishing to pursue higher education in IT. They do not have to leave home.

We realise, especially with Black females, that they are often carers and homemakers, and it is more productive for them to stay home while they study and not move into a University residence”.

And, of course, Stollard believes that there are gender stereotypes in this industry.

“That is another hurdle the Black females face, and we wish to assist with setting them on their path towards a career in IT. In some instances, the stereotyping of women by organisations within a primarily male-dominated industry presents a major hurdle for females, so many women may be discouraged both from studying and working in IT”, he says.

For many of the Black women and entrepreneurs trying to break into the South African ICT market, gaining access to the required business skills and resources could be the make-or-break for their ICT careers.

Stollard aims to change this. “The Boston Education Trust is offering 20 bursaries in IT with applications now open, to start their studies in February 2019,” he says.

The Boston Education Trust is offering 20 bursaries to South African Black females who register for an IT Diploma at Boston City Campus & Business College.

The Trust will pay the tuition fees

of those selected for the bursaries.

Clinic closes its doors due to health hazards Services will be relocated to nearby health facilities to ensure primary healthcare services continue.

llr Mpho Phalatse, MMC for Health and Social Development in the City of Joburg, tabled a report to the Mayoral Committee meeting on the challenges that the 80 Albert Street clinic is facing due to serious environmental health issues in and around the clinic.

A unanimous decision was taken to temporarily close down the clinic and relocate services to the nearest health facilities to ensure that primary healthcare services continue.

The decision comes following an assessment by the city’s environmental health inspectors, who declared the building where 80 Albert Street clinic is housed, a bad building.

The environmental health practitioners have been reporting about the untenable environmental health hazards that have been developing over time in and around the health facility.

The current conditions in the clinic are clearly in contravention of the Occupational Health and Safety as well as the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA), as well as

the Labour Relations Act that require our health workers to work in a healthy and conducive environment. The environment also is not complying with the Environmental Health legislation, bylaws and the policy guidelines.

The 80 Albert clinic is situated on the first floor in the Heritage Building that is surrounded by an informal settlement and the car repairs’ small businesses. There is a number of unknown occupants in the building. Some of the occupants allegedly belonged to an NGO that worked with the Provincial Social Development. Illegal squatters who have moved into the building continue to compromise the facility which was recently repaired.

Water is seeping through the walls into the health facility as squatters continue to partition the top floors of the building and illegally connect to the clinic water and electricity systems.

As the political head of the Health Department, MMC Phalatse visited the clinic this week to inform the staff of the decision. During the site visit on Monday, 21 January 2019,

Cllr Phalatse was shocked at the rapid decline of the building. She informed staff at the clinic that the temporary closure of the facility will be done properly to ensure that the service rendered to patients is not compromised, especially those who are on chronic medication.

“As the custodians of environmental health in the city, we need to lead by example and abide by envi-

ronmental health standards. Continuing to operate under these circumstances would be a direct violation of even the city’s service with pride mantra. This closure will enable us to do the right thing and give our residents the kind of service they deserve, “said Phalatse.

A committee has been established to manage the closure and transfer of patients, staff, as well as patients’

records to Jeppe, Esselen and Rossetenville Clinics which are within a 5km radius of 80 Albert Street Clinic.

Phalatse said lives of patients and staff should never be compromised and that closing down the clinic, while permanent solutions are finalized, should be understood in the context of saving lives and providing quality healthcare.

Diabetes; It’s time to act - Cllr Mpho Phalatse OPINION

The chronic disorder of glucose metabolism has thrived at the hands of ignorance and myths that have led many to a place of complacency, while they ignore the very things it feeds on – unhealthy eating habits, physical inactivity, and of course, excess body weight.”

any years ago when I was in medical school, HIV and Aids was a fairly new thing.

Another topic in my internal medicine class while experts were still figuring out what it was and how to deal with it.

ARVs were expensive and not readily available. When they finally became available, only a select few could access them due to cost constraints. Years later as an intern, I saw body after body falling in our internal medicine wards as they succumbed to Aids.

It was this high mortality rate, and drastic reduction in life expectancy, that called for government to declare HIV and Aids a national emergency. We saw government mobilise all sectors of society around the pandemic. We also saw sectors of government begin to collaborate around how to change this narrative.

Today we boast improvements in life expectancy, infant and under-five mortality, as well as maternal mortality rates – largely as a result of a concerted effort by government to preserve its most valued assets – the people of this nation.

But we dare not celebrate too soon.

Because another threat is busy rearing its head and it’s moving in on us at a faster pace than most of us realise.

Diabetes – a chronic disorder of glucose metabolism – has thrived at the hands of ignorance and myths that have led many to a place of complacency, while they ignore the very things it feeds on – unhealthy eating habits, physical inactivity, and of course, ex-

cess body weight.

Though the cause of type 1 diabetes, otherwise known as childhood onset diabetes, remains unknown, and though experts agree that in the current scheme of things it cannot be prevented, type 2 or adult onset diabetes is preventable 90% of the time. Yet in spite of this we are seeing a rapid rise in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes, particularly in low and middle income countries. lA Stats SA report of mortality data in 2017 named diabetes as the second leading cause of death in South Africa, and the leading cause of death among women in South Africa, surpassing TB and HIV. l Every eight seconds someone dies from diabetes. l Every 30 seconds someone loses a limb from diabetes. l 65% of people will die from some form of heart disease or stroke. l Five out of a hundred adults in South Africa had diabetes in 2017. l There are more than 1.8 million people diagnosed with diabetes in South Africa. l About 1.5 million people in South Africa are living with diabetes, but are not aware. l It is not just a little bit of a sugar problem. It is a metabolic disorder characterised by high glucose levels because of insufficient insulin, defects in insulin usage or both.

Indeed the wave of diabetes is sweeping over South Africa like a tsunami.

The City of Johannesburg became part of the Novo Nordisk, Cities Changing Diabetes initiative six years ago, and it is one of 10 cities around the

world that are part of this network, working together on a winning formula to beat this tsunami.

This partnership resulted in a survey in 14 clinics that revealed an 11% prevalence of diabetes in Johannesburg, and a strong association between diabetes and excess body weight. Of the 2,427 participants 29% were overweight, and 37% were obese. (Overweight: BMI 25 to less than 30; Obese: BMI 30 and above) Following the survey, the city engaged with the other cities at a global summit last year, to share best practice around diabetes control at a city level.

Projections were made for each of the cities, to look at what would need to happen to bend the diabetes curve, and Johannesburg was given a target of 25% reduction in obesity by the year 2045 to ensure the diabetes prevalence does not increase beyond 12%, failing which the diabetes prevalence in 2045 will be 16.2% — that’s 16 in every 100 people living with this completely preventable, life-threatening condition.

So what is diabetes? It is a chronic condition that occurs either when the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin (type 1), or when it cannot effectively use its insulin (type 2). Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar. Symptoms of diabetes include frequent or recurring infections, cuts and bruises that heal slowly, itching skin and boils, unusual weight loss, unusual thirst, excessive urination, extreme fatigue or lack of energy, blurred vision, or tingling and numbness in the hands or feet.

The onset of type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed by maintaining a healthy body weight, being physically

active, and eating a healthy diet. Regular screening is advised and diagnosis is made through blood sugar testing. If diagnosed it can be treated using a multimodal approach including a healthy diet, physical activity, insulin administration in type 1 diabetes, and oral medication with or without insulin in type 2 diabetes.

If undiagnosed and untreated it can lead to heart attacks, strokes, blindness, kidney failure and even limb amputation.

These are the truths that society deserves to know, and through a series of interventions we will make it known.

The Johannesburg Student Council, another partner in this initiative, has to date managed to reach more than 2,000 learners in Region D and F of the city with awareness campaigns.

Our health promoters are out in communities raising awareness and doing screening. Our nurse clinicians have been trained to conduct nutrition assessments, nutrition counselling and nutrition support.

Our clinics have started doing routine BMI monitoring on all patients, and not just babies.

These are just some of the many ongoing initiatives within the city as we forge ahead towards bending the curve.

We did it for HIV, we can certainly do it for diabetes. Someone dies from diabetes every eight seconds.

And each time you see the blue circle, let it serve as a reminder of this silent killer lurking in our midst, but let it also serve as a reminder of the power you have to beat it. Get tested, eat healthily, exercise. It can save your life.

A view of Johannesburg through lenses from a different era

J

ohannesburg was always a much photographed place from its earliest days. It was a city that grew up with photographers and their cameras. As a town of migrants and immigrants, people wanted to send postcards and photographic souvenirs back home.

Some proof is in a new book, Johannesburg Then and Now, by history blogger, Marc Latilla. It is a series of photographic juxtapositions of early photographs of the city – dating from the 1880s to the 1940s – with contemporary images of the same street scene or building by photographer Yeshiel Panchia.

The book is descriptive rather than analytical, with the emphasis on Johannesburg buildings, places and streets and not its people. Latilla’s love and passion for his city comes through in his descriptions.

At a mere 132 years Johannesburg is a young city compared with cities of the world. London and Rome go back over 2000 years.

It started as a mining camp with a gold bonanza once George Harrison had found gold on the Main Reef in 1886. The new mining settlement was named Johannesburg – the origins of the name and who precisely was the “Johannes” of Johannesburg is still in dispute. The camp grew over time to a city. Today it is a metropolis that dominates the province of Gauteng, both as the provincial capital and the financial heartland of South Africa.

Johannesburg is a fractured city, divided in all sorts of ways. Geographically it’s split by the mines of the Witwatersrand - one can still see their remains south of the city while the north has a very different landscape.

Another divide was created by the railway which cut the town in half with the most affluent suburbs to the north and the less affluent to the south.

The city’s economic divide was also evident in the architectural styles of the residential areas which reflected status: from the working

class, to the lower and upper middle class, and then at the very top end the grand estates on the northern ridges for the Randlords and newly enriched capitalist class.

The town was also divided by race from its earliest days. While there was always economic integration, segregated residential areas for different racial groups were the norm. The township of Soweto was created in the 1930s when the white government started separating black people from white people.

This policy of racial and class separation was perpetuated further when apartheid became official policy in 1948. It also led to forced removals of black people to townships outside the “white” city.

Johannesburg has always grown

in concentric circles. Municipal boundaries were periodically extended, mapped and basic services of water, sewerage, lighting, tramways financed by an increasing number of ratepayers brought into the net to support the city. Soweto, once the internationally recognised site of the 1976 youth uprising, is now part of the city, but so is the glitzy new glass and concrete post-modern city of Sandton.

The Johannesburg that has been captured in this book though is the old Johannesburg; what was called the Central Business District and its surrounding suburbs. This is Johannesburg from 1886 to a date more or less 50 years later when the city celebrated its jubilee with the Great Empire exhibition at Milner Park in

1936.

I should declare an interest – I was first asked by Penguin Books if they could use an image of an old early title deed that I had written about and then to give the book a preliminary early opinion. As historian I found myself drawn in to assist in some fact checking and comments to help the author. Of course the selection of photographs and his commentary remain his entirely.

The old photographs were taken by countless unknown and mainly anonymous photographers. They are remarkable in their own right. It was so much more difficult to take and make a photograph in 1900 than in our digital age. Those old photos in black and white are works of art as much as are the perfect ....

he Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba has awarded Redevelopment Certificates to two developers of three of the 84 Inner City properties earmarked for revitalisation.

The awarding of these certificates on Thursday, 24 January 2019, by the City Manager, Dr Ndivhoniswani Lukhwareni, signals the start of Mashaba’s plan to work with private developers in turning the inner city into a construction site to build affordable accommodation for poorer residents of the City.

Dr Lukhwareni said the awarding of certification for redevelopment was the first bullet in the fight against urban decay. The three properties are Vannin Court and Beaconsfield Court in Hillbrow and vacant land on 82 Gwigwi Mrwebi Street in Newtown, Joburg’s cultural precinct.

The early photographs are tend to be undated, so that the “then” can be any time from circa 1890 to the 1930s and even later, while the now photographs are all in colour and clearly belong to the last few years.

My favourite photo is the old aerial view of the Harrow Road redevelopment when the first Johannesburg freeway was engineered (Harrow has since been renamed after a famous Johannesburger, the liberation struggle stalwart Joe Slovo). The photo allows us to see precisely how Harrow Road was widened and changed direction in the fifties. This single photo is a superb find.

A book such as this makes a contribution to heritage because it captures, assembles and documents the old and now the new.

Where old photographs have been found recording what a particular building looked like and the building is still there, such pho-

tographic documentation strengthens the heritage preservation case.

However, none of the grit, crime, grime, litter or lack of maintenance we battle against today is visible in the modern photographs. This is the Johannesburg we don’t see: the crisis of homelessness and densification of dwellings. Who, for example, would know in the photo of Plein Street park that it is actually now a dormitory area for dozens of homeless people without jobs? Is it the city or history or harsh economic realities that has failed them? Of course one can argue that modernization and urbanization always left victims and the city of gold did not bring fabled wealth to all .

Johannesburg Then and Now is a fascinating book. It’s important for cities to preserve their pasts , because “Roots” matter as much as “shoots”. This book can perhaps start a discussion about what ought to be appreciated and “saved”. The book will remind city planners to include heritage in their planning for a 21st century city.

ing on Kotze Street, is almost 99 years old. Once revitalised, it’ll house 95 appropriately sized rooms. Beaconsfield Court, on 65 Quartz Street, also has seven floors and will be developed into 56 units.

It stands on Edith Carvel Street in the heart of Hillbrow, opposite a Rea Vaya station. Both buildings will be redeveloped by EGC Properties at the cost of R85 million.

EGC envisages creating over 400 jobs during the construction phase and hiring about 80 SMEs as partners in the development.

Evan Dryden, EGC’s managing director, said the plan is to modernise both buildings and make them energy efficient and environmentally friendly, with rent costing R900 a month per unit.

The Newtown development which will be spearheaded by the Brickfields Housing Company, with a potential 253 social housing units to be built.

The company pledged to spend R250 million on various housing projects in

Newtown over years.

Mashaba said the inner city could only be revitalised through public private partnerships. He said an additional 80 to 100 buildings will be released for redevelopment this year alone.

The mayor said the handover of these properties is proof that the private sector has the appetite to rehabilitate the Johannesburg inner city.

Anne Steffi, the director of the Inner City Partnership, said the redevelopment of the inner city was a brave initiative. “This will make a huge difference in the make-up of the inner city thanks to the City of Joburg for this brave initiative.”

The City of Joburg attracted over R8 billion investment in the previous financial year and the plan was to use the revitalisation of the inner city to double this in the current fiscal period.

“This is the way we begin to close the chasm between the rich and the poor in our City,” said Mashaba.

A

man was electrocuted while allegedly trying to steal cables from a power substation in Johannesburg on Sun-

day.

“This morning City Power workers discovered a body of a person at our substation near Steeledale, south of Johannesburg,” said City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena.

“It is suspected that the deceased was electrocuted trying to dismantle and steal material inside the substation. Working tools were found in his possession.”

Mangena said they were trying to find out who the man was and if he was acting alone.

“City Power is again warning people against trying to vandalise and dismantle our infrastructure as this is not only costly to the city but often leads to death or injury.”

he Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says 700 000 new voters have been added to the voters’ roll ahead of this year’s National and Provincial elections.

IEC CEO Sy Mamabolo said this when the electoral commission briefed the media on the outcomes of the final voter registration weekend at the Imbizo Media Centre in Cape Town on Tuesday.

“The Electoral Commission is pleased to report that over 700 000 new voters registered during the final registration weekend, bringing the total number of registered voters on the voters’ roll to 26 727 921.

“Most encouragingly, of the 703 794 new registrations, over 81% [574 899] are under 30 years old.

This means that the youth have heeded the call to register,” he said.

The announcement comes after some government departments and political parties, among others, put in a last ditch effort over the weekend to urge citizens to come out in their numbers to either register to vote or to check their details at their nearest voting stations.

The Department of Home Affairs extended the working hours at its offices to ensure that people who

have not collected their identity documents or those wanting to apply for temporary identity documents are able to do so.

Mamabolo said when registration figures are combined with new registrations during the March 2018 registration weekend, about 1.1 million new voters have been added to the voters’ roll ahead of the upcoming elections.

“Of these new voters, 52% are women and 48% are men. Nearly half [49.2%] are aged [between] 20 and 29, 29.6% are aged [between]

18 and 19 and 5.9% are aged [between] 16 and 17,” he said.

Mamabolo said over the past weekend, KwaZulu-Natal registered the highest number of new registrations with 246 847. Gauteng recorded the second highest number of new registrations with 236 287, followed by the Eastern Cape, where 130 959 registrations were recorded.

In terms of the voters’ roll, Gauteng has the most registered voters (6.3 million or 23.8%) of the total voters’ roll, followed by KwaZu-

bolo said.

He said in total, 2 472 520 voters were assisted at South Africa’s 22 925 voting stations over the weekend. Of these, 65% visited a voting station on Sunday with a last minute rush over the final few hours.

“Based on latest voting age population estimates from Statistics South Africa, the current voters’ roll reflects a total registration by 74.5% of the eligible population.

“The Electoral Commission is pleased with the overall registration level which remains high by international standards for countries with a voluntary registration system. However, the Commission remains concerned that approximately nine million eligible voters are still not registered, of which six million are under 30 years old.”

Mamabolo said, meanwhile, that eligible voters who missed an opportunity to register this weekend still have a window of opportunity to register at IEC offices before the President proclaims the election date.

University of Johannesburg sports scientist Taren Naidoo

he 31-year-old sports scientist is part of the department at UJ and was last year appointed to work with the national women’s hockey team under her former mentor, Robin van Ginkel.

“Representing your country in any way is a privilege and I am humbled and excited all at once,” she said.

“It is great to work alongside the brains of the industry – coaches and medical staff – and with the most talented athletes in our country.” she added.

“Robin is truly an inspiration who I admire and respect. I worked with him at UJ sport, where he was head of the sports science department.

“His high-performance strategies saw the department grow immensely and I learnt a great deal from him in this environment.” she said. Initially eager to become a physiotherapist, Naidoo’s plans were stymied when she realised she needed physics as a major.

“The faculty officers at the university suggested occupational therapy, speech and hearing, and sports science,” she said. “So I picked sports science.

“I was not a talented sport person but at school and varsity I participated in everything

– water polo, badminton, hockey, tennis, basketball, rhythmic gymnastics, netball. You name it, if I had time I was there and would get involved.”she said.

Having qualified from UKZN with honours in sports science and a masters in exercise physiology, Naidoo now works with the UJ basketball and women’s hockey teams.

“As the sports scientist for those teams I manage and work with each athlete on an individual basis,” Naidoo said.

“This involves planning the player’s strength and conditioning on the field and in the gym, as well as the skill sessions,”she added.

Naidoo said there are many other aspects as well which are vital for a fully functioning team and this all needs to be planned in tandem with the coach.

“As a sports scientist you get to work with new equipment and technology that the industry has. Every day is a different day at work and working with people is a passion of mine.

“It’s so rewarding seeing the growth and being a part of the process that leads to a gold medal or personal best.” Naidoo said.
