he trustee of the Learn and Earn Trust NGO, which owns the Florence building in Kotze Street, Hillbrow, was killed on Saturday after a long battle with building hijackers, according to police.

Police say Jeffrey Nzuza’s three assailants apparently followed him and stabbed him to death in Braamfontein, and were arrested at the scene.

In the centre of the tragedy is the old Florence Nightingale Hospital building, which was given to the NGO by Afrox when the hospital closed in 1992, and the Department of Local Government and Housing subsidised the transitional housing. Afrox also gave R1 million to the NGO, R600 000 of which was reportedly sto-

len by some trustee, together with a large collection from the tenant’s rent money.

Since 2002, there has been mismanagement of the building. The trustees brought in the Vusani Amadolobha housing company to help with management, but the tenants expelled the company. Legal disputes followed between trustees, and some of them resigned or went missing. The tenants formed a committe and collected money with which to keep the building clean. The Housing Department had abandoned the project.

Nzuza still tried to salvage the trust, but was arrested on allegations of trying to hijack the building in December 2010. He was denied bail till he

was acquitted in July last year. When he was released Nzuza told The Star newspaper that a new group of people were collecting rent, and appealed for assistance. He added that tenants were refusing to comply with requests for them to leave the building, pay rent or comply with by-laws, and arrears on services totalled R4 million.

Nzuza then started evicting the tenants who refused to pay rent, causing tension and anger in the building. Joburg’s Region F spokesperson Shaun O’Shea said an agreement had been reached between the tenants and the trust that the building would start paying off its arrears and complying to by-laws.

Maphologela adds that all property owners would be informed of their new values in their February municipal account statements.

“The notice, formally known as a Section 49 Notice, informs property owners of the amount at which their property has been valued as on 2 July 2012 by the Municipal Valuer and entered in the new valuation roll. If one is satisfied that this figure represents the market value of the property as at 2 July 2012, no action needs to be taken. Should you feel that your property has been overvalued or undervalued, you may lodge an objection, a process that will be detailed along with the Section 49 Notice in your monthly statement,” says Maphologela.

No viewing or objections will be entertained before February 20.

oburg Central police have arrested a 35 year-old man after he allegedly stabbed another man in Jeppe Street, CBD, according to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele.

He explains that a police patrol noticed a man who was bleeding from the neck at corner Jeppe and Sauer streets in the Joburg CBD. “The man pointed out the man who had stabbed him. The police arrested the suspect and confiscated his knife, and charged him with attempted murder.

The victim was taken to hospital by ambulance. The motive for the stabbing had not been established.”

Meanwhile Joburg police arrested 48 suspects over the weekend, W/O Mbele says. “Among them five were for robbery, two for possession of an unlicensed gun, one for car theft, two for possession of stolen property, four for fraud, nine for shoplifting and one for attempted murder.”

The rest were taken in for crimes like driving without a license, domestic violence, assault common and GBH, drunk and driving, W/O Mbele adds.

his week Hillbrow police arrested a man for possession of an unlicensed gun in Kotze Street, according to police spokesman Cst Mduduzi Zondo.

He explains that members of Robbery Unit noticed a suspicious man at the Catherine and Kotze streets intersection. “When they approached him, he jumped into a taxi which was parked nearby. They followed him into the vehicle, and when they searched the vehicle they found an unlicensed .38 Special revolver loaded with five bullets. It later turned out that the revolver

was reported stolen from a security company in Brixton. The suspect, aged 45, has been charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm,” Zondo says.

Meanwhile Hillbrow police arrested 45 suspects over the weekend, Cst Zondo adds.

“Two were arrested for assault GBH, six for common assault, four for shoplifting, two for theft, seven for malicious damage to property, two for fraud, 14 for possession of drugs, two for drunken driving, four for robbery with weapons, and two for contravening the Explosives Act. The police also confiscated substantial amounts of drugs and pirated DVDs,” Cst Zondo adds.

his week Joburg Central police arrested a 31-yearold suspect for possession of an unlicensed gun near a building called Mnyamandawo at corner Polly and Market Street, says police spokesperson Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele.

He says police noticed a suspicious man standing next to the

building. “They went over to him, and upon searching him found a police issue Z88 9mm pistol loaded with 12 bullets on him. The gun’s serial number had been filed off.”

W/O Mbele adds that police are currently investigating to determine how the police issue firearm ended up in the hands of the suspect, who has been charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Early antenatal care

ttending antenatal clinic before 12 weeks is important because success in management of diseases in pregnancy, including Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV depends on early detection.

Current statistics show that mothers attend antenatal clinic late in pregnancy, which renders treatment interventions to be unsuccessful.

Antenatal care is important in preventing of mother-to-child transmission of HIV. Counselling for a test to exclude HIV is done at the first visit. Mothers who test HIV positive are further tested for CD4 cell count.

If it is below 350, ARV treatment is prescribed. If the CD4 cell count is above 350 the mother is put on AZT. Every mother who tests HIV positive should be tested for TB, for it is the most common and deadly opportunistic infection. The mother is advised to use condoms in order to prevent re-infections, which would render the ART in effective.

There is assessment for potential

risks in pregnancy and labour. A mother may die in pregnancy and during labour if the risks are not ruled out early and managed appropriately.

These risks could be previous caesarean sections, first pregnancy at age 35 years and above, intra-uterine growth retardation, abnormal lie e.g. breech or transverse lie. Other high risk pregnant mothers are those who live with chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, epilepsy, cardiac, hereditable abnormalities e.g. down’ syndrome, TB and AIDS. The pregnant mom is given scheduled clinic visits. During these visits the foetal growth monitoring is done. Foetal heart rate and rhythm is checked. Pregnant mothers are advised to monitor foetal movements and report to the clinic urgently if they do not feel foetal movement.

Diminished or absent foetal movements indicate of intra-uterine death.

The presenting part is checked. Under normal circumstances the PP should be cephalic (head).

In preparing for delivery mothers are advised to arrange their own transport in time. Ambulance numbers are issued in case of complications and emergencies.

Danger signs warrant immediate attention, irrespective of the scheduled appointment. Those include severe headache, swollen hands and feet, baby stopped kicking, feeling tired and weak, burning of urine, itchy and discharging vagina, lower back pain and water braking before due date.

The choice of baby feeding and future contraceptives is also discussed.

In prophylactic treatment mothers are issued with iron supplements and calcium. One or three doses of antitetanus toxoid is given by injection to prevent neonatal tetanus.

During this cancer awareness period it would not be a bad idea to delve into some technicalities that go with the disease.

The experts tell us that cancer, a disease of the cells, the basic building blocks of our bodies, is controlled by genetic instructions. Those instructions tell the cells when and how to grow, reproduce and die.

If those instructions get confused, a cell may behave and reproduce in an uncontrolled way, and that is when it is called a cancer. It has to be clear that cancer is not a single disease, and no single factor causes it. Many things contribute to cancer development, but several cancers are caused by lifestyle factors like smoking, poor diet, and excess body fat.

The experts explain that all cancers start from one cell that changes many times, and some of the changes are permanent alterations to the DNA, which are called mutations. A cancerous cell has to make it past many natural defences that cancer development takes a long time. Fortunately, thousands of damaged cells get disposed of before they can cause any harm.

However, the experts say if the cell gets past the natural defence system and starts multiplying without control; it may form a mass of abnormal cells, called a tumour.

Not all tumours are dangerous, though.

The benign tumours may disappear after a while, but the malignant or cancerous tumours can spread into surrounding tissues, damaging nearby cells or organs.

Many substances in plant foods can help our natural defences prevent damage or even repair body cells. Daily physical activity also helps prevent some major cancers from developing. Keeping body fat from building up, especially around the middle, helps prevent many cancers.

Since cancer development is a long process; it is never too early, and never too late, to make changes that may slow or halt the process. In short, stop smoking, move your body more often, reduce weight and add plant foods to your diet.

Building still not renovated

I

happen to live in Pritchard Street, in a building opposite Milton Court.

When I first moved into the building last year my concern was having to live with my family next to that building, because it is in a terrible mess. I think it is one of the dirtiest buildings in the city.

But then, when I moved into Pritchard Street someone showed me a letter that had been published in your newspaper, (Inner-city Gazette 16 – 23 February 2012) which was written by the Regional Manager, Legal and Special Investigations for Region F, Louis Geldenhuys. In the letter, a copy of which I still have, Geldenhuys wrote that the Milton Court building had been sold on auction,

and that ‘legal action on non-compliance to bylaws in respect of health, EMS building control etc, had been stopped in order to allow the buyer to start renovating the building’.

Up to today, I still see the old Milton Court as it ever was, and even much more of a health hazard now than ever. I wish to know when that buyer will start renovating the building, since it was bought 12 months ago.

All we want here is to have a healthy environment where we live with our families, and also for the people who live at Milton Court to have a better place to live than risk their lives in such a dangerous place.

topping tobacco use or smoking immediately after being diagnosed with cancer gives a person the best chance for their cancer treatment to work.

When a person is diagnosed with cancer, their best chance for a cure is their first cancer treatment. This means if the cancer comes back, the chances of eliminating the cancer completely are reduced. If tobacco decreases the effectiveness of chemotherapy or radiation therapy, then waiting six months or a year before quitting tobacco use means that our best chance for successfully treating the cancer is likely gone.

As a result, it is very important for patients to realize that it’s never too late to quit, and that quitting immediately at the time of diagnosis is very important.

Using tobacco can decrease the effectiveness of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Tobacco can decrease the response to cancer treatment, increase the risk of cancer recurrence, increase treatment-related toxicity, and decrease survival.

In addition to the negative effects of tobacco on cancer treatment, tobacco also weakens general cardiovascular health, potentially leading to heart disease and lung disease.

People with cancer who use tobacco will still have an increased risk of heart attacks, pulmonary (lung) disease, kidney disease, cardiovascular (heart) disease, and other

tobacco-related diseases, just like people who use tobacco who have not been diagnosed with cancer.

So overall, not only is tobacco use bad for cancer treatment, but it also continues to increase the risk of other non-cancerrelated diseases.

We know that patients have a much better chance of quitting if doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and other health care providers can provide support. There are also a number of resources available depending upon the location of a patient. State and national quitlines are always available for patients.

However, I personally suggest two important steps. First, a patient must know that tobacco cessation is extremely important and that their best chance is to quit immediately.

Second, the patient should approach their doctor or clinical team and say: “I know that quitting tobacco use is very important for me. Please help me quit tobacco use.”

The mainstays for tobacco cessation include medications and counselling, but the first step is a decision to quit. The patient is the only one who can make that decision.

In addition, since tobacco use decreases the effectiveness of cancer treatment and decreases the person’s overall health, then stopping tobacco use is one important aspect of cancer care that the patient has complete control over. Quitting tobacco use can be an extremely big accomplishment that puts some of the control of cancer treatment back into the hands of the patient.

Four die in rebel attack Dakar - At least four people, including a Frenchman, have been killed in a raid on a bank by suspected separatist rebels in the Casamance region.

The Senegalese army said rebels from the Casamance Movement for Democratic Forces (MDFC) attacked Credit Mutuel bank in Kafountine on Friday.

It was not clear how the civilians, including the Frenchman, were killed.

The rebels have been fighting for independence in a conflict which has killed thousands since 1982.

Friday’s attack would be the deadliest attack since President Macky Sall came to power in March 2012.

Unnamed army officials said three civilians - including the Frenchman - died when the MDFC rebels raided the bank. Two rebels were killed when soldiers arrived and a clash ensued, they added.

Another military source said four people were killed in the shootout, including a Frenchman.

The source said the French victim had lived in Casamance and was married to a Senegalese woman.

Thousands of people have been killed since 1982 when the rebel MDFC began its fight for independence for the southern region of Casamance.

Gangs abduct refugees

Asmara - Eritrea’s opposition has called for urgent action to stop abductions of Eritrean refugees sheltered at Shagarab refugee camp in eastern Sudan.

The UN and human rights groups say the refugees who arrive at the border in Sudan are being kidnapped for ransom, sexual exploitation, forced marriage and bonded labour. Eritrean Democratic Alliance (EDA) chairman Tewelde Gebresilase said human trafficking is done by an organised network from the borders of Eritrea to refugee camps in Sudan and the Sinai peninsula in Egypt.

Refugees are kidnapped by the Rashaida tribe, armed gangs, and local tribesmen in eastern Sudan. They are then taken to Sinai where they are sold for different purposes, including the extraction of their organs. The UNHCR documented the kidnapping of 551 refugees in 2012. About 2000 Eritreans arrive in Sudan monthly, but increasing kidnappings, gang rapes and security measures by the government of Isaias Afewerki, have led to a drop in arrivals to only hundreds in a month.

French troops guard mine

Niamey – The government has confirmed that French special forces are protecting one of the country’s biggest uranium mines.

President Mahamadou Issoufou said security was being tightened at the Arlit mine after the recent hostage crisis in Algeria. French company Areva plays a major part in mining in Niger, the world’s fifth-largest producer of uranium. Islamist militants kidnapped five French workers from the mine in Arlit three years ago.

Four of them are still being held - along with three other French hostages - and it is believed they could be in the north of Mali close to where French troops are battling al-Qaeda-linked militants.

President Issoufou confirmed that French special forces were guarding the uranium mine. “In light of what happened in Algeria we decided to strengthen the protection of mining sites,” he added.

France’s Agence France-Presse news agency said a dozen French special forces reservists were strengthening security at the site. Last month, at least 37 foreign workers were killed when Islamist militants seized a gas plant at In Amenas in eastern Algeria.

Rebels promise peace deal Kinshasa -The M23 rebels say they expect to sign a peace deal with the government by the end of this month and end their 10 month revolt.

The rebels have carved out a fiefdom in eastern DRC’s North Kivu province that has dragged the area back into war and displaced about 500 000 people. Rebel spokesper-

son Bertrand Bisimwa said negotiations with the government have already covered substantial ground.

Government spokesperson Lambert Mende said the M23 have broadened their goals to include removal of Kabila; which is slowing down the process.

The Kampala talks aim at bringing the rebels and Kinshasa closer on a wide

range of economic, political and security issues, including amnesty for ‘war and insurgency acts,’ the release of political prisoners and reparation of damages due to the war.

Khartoum - The Islamic Wasat Party has signed the New Dawn charter in Kampala, joining rebel groups and other political parties who seek to overthrow the regime of President Omar al-Bashir.

Malik Agar, head of the Sudanese Revolutionary Front (SRF) and Islamic Wasat Party leader Yousef al-Koda released a joint statement on Thursday confirming the information. The New Dawn charter calls for overthrowing the Sudanese regime through political and armed struggle. Furthermore, it stresses the importance of a united Sudan and the freedom of expression and religion.

Rule of law, an independent judicial system, a peaceful transfer of power, democracy and a federal system are additional matters the document calls for. Signatories also want to provide citizenship for everyone, and eradicate segregation based on religious or ethnic grounds via the charter. Other issues have not yet been completely agreed, which require further discussion.

They include more dialogue among political parties and the future ruling system in the country including the connection between religion and state. Agar stressed this would pave the way for all people of Sudan to be ‘on the same page’.

etween February 25 and March 2 the National School of the Arts (NSA) will showcase its emerging talent during its annual flagship event, The Festival of Fame (FOF).

Now in its 12th year the event sees NSA learners and professionals joining hands in a celebration of art, drama, dance and music.

A heritage theme has been woven into the content of the festival: Festival of Fame - Expressions of Heritage. A year before SA’s democracy turns 20 years old; FOF is an invitation to start the celebrations early with this six-day festival reflecting SA’s dynamic cultural heritage.

Festival of Fame - Expressions of Heritage, will see the creative precinct at the top of the Braamfontein Hill alive with activity, extending from the National School of the Arts, to Constitution Hill and Joburg Theatre. The NSA, all three Joburg Theatre venues, The Mandela, The Fringe and the space.com, as well as Constitution

Hill will host Festival of Fame Productions.

Opening the six-day programme in the Mandela Theatre will be the highly acclaimed Songs of Migration featuring 2013 Grammy nominee Hugh Masekela. This production from Sibojama Theatre returns to Johannesburg after a successful international tour, which included performances at the Kennedy Centre in Washington and the Hackney Empire in London.

For five memorable performances, learners from the NSA will share the spotlight with seasoned professionals in this special FOF Season. Award winning director, actor and storyteller, James Ngcobo has re-directed the work to give the NSA learners their individual moments to shine.

Songs of Migration marks a special collaboration between experience and youth, and announces a special relationship between iconic musician Hugh Masekela and the National School of the Arts.

Songs of Migration also features the popular Gloria Bosman.

A rich heritage of dance styles will be given grand exposure during Dance Spectrum, also at home in the Mandela Theatre. Choreographed by Manuel Norambuena and Sarah Hurter Minkus Variations celebrates the traditional classical ballet heritage.

Pictures of Africa is a dramatic contemporary piece choreographed by Lauren Jones. In a clever confluence of cultures, Gillian Bonegio uses the rich rhythm of the kwela as inspiration for her Spanish programme, which also includes Flamenco Tangos danced to Raul Bonegio’s atmospheric guitar and vocal accompaniment.

Guest choreographer Gregory Maqoma from Vuyani Dance Theatre brings his signature choreographic style to the NSA in his staging of two movements from his critically celebrated, The Four Seasons.

Hauntingly beautiful and featuring the NSA Drama Department learners is Wesley Swain Lauder’s production of The Secret Garden in The Fringe. The Music Department’s African Reflections con-

ducted and directed by Jana Barnard features the NSA’s 45-piece orchestra and 30-voice choir. This eclectic musical journey through our history shows that the soul and heart beat of our heritage lies in our music.

The NSA will also host five performances of Tranceformations.

A story about racism, migration, censorship and breaking taboos; about leaving the house looking like you’ve been dressed by someone who hates you Christine Skinner The critically acclaimed play Sometimes I Laugh Like My Sister will be performed this week at the Theatre Arts Admin Collective in Observatory.

Performed by Rebecca Peyton and co-written and directed by Martin Bartelt, Sometimes I Laugh Like My Sister is a one-woman play about the reaction of Peyton to her big sister, BBC news producer Kate Peyton, being shot once in the back and killed.

Kate, who had been based in Johannesburg for 10 years, was reporting on the situation in Mogadishu, Somalia, when she was attacked. This is a story about politics, journalism and grief told through the eyes of Rebecca who co-wrote the piece with German theatre director Martin Bartelt.

Sometimes I Laugh Like My Sister is about racism, migration, censorship and breaking taboos; it’s about dancing with abandon even as grief consumes every element of your personality; it’s about leaving the house looking like you’ve been dressed by someone who hates you, deciding not to have a drink for breakfast, press freedom and human rights. Sometimes I Laugh Like My Sister will have you laughing and crying as Rebecca gambols through the worst of times.

Sometimes I Laugh Like My Sister received critical acclaim at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2010, followed in 2011 by a 30-date UK tour and a sell-out run in London at the Finborough Theatre’s New Writing Festival in 2012. It has toured in Switzerland and France and was published by Oberon Books in January 2012.

The Spanish version of the show, which will also be performed by Rebecca Peyton, is currently in rehearsal for a European, US and Latin American tour.

Now Sometimes I Laugh Like My Sister comes to Africa, the continent which Kate knew so well and loved so deeply, and to South Africa, the country Kate chose to call home.

Each evening’s performance will be followed by a hosted conversation with both Rebecca and Martin.

Hosts include Alan Storey, Shirley Gunn, Marianne Thamm, Tracey Saunders and Jaqueline Dommisse.

Sometimes I Laugh Like My Sister will be performed from 9 to 16 February at the Theatre Arts Admin Collective, Methodist Church Hall in Milton Road, Observatory.

afana Bafana are looking forward to their crucial 2014 World Cup qualifier against Central African Republic at home on 23 March, captain Bongani Khumalo (pictured) said this week in Johannesburg.

Referring to the Afcon quarter-final exit last week he said: “We need to pick ourselves up and start preparing for the World Cup because that is where every player wants to be.”

On the same day Bafana play against the Central African Republic, Ethiopia who are in the same Group A, hosts Botswana in Addis Ababa.

Bafana face an uphill battle to finish top of their group, having drawn two games against Ethiopia and Botswana.

On 3 June 2012 Bafana drew one-all with Ethiopia, while on the previous day the Central African Republic had beaten Botswana 2- 0 in Bangui.

On 9 June 2012 Bafana played another one-all draw with Botswana in Gaborone, while on the next day Ethiopia beat the Central African Republic 2 - 0 in Addis Ababa.

As it stands now in Group A; Ethiopia has four points, the Central African Republic has three points, Bafana has two and Botswana has one point.

he Nigerian Super Eagles and the Burkinabe Stallions will face each other in the African Cup of Nations final at the National Stadium on Sunday, after winning the semi-finals in dramatic fashion on Wednesday.

The Nigerians booked their place in the final after a 4-1 drubbing of Mali at the Moses Mabhida stadium in Durban. The Super Eagles were three goals up by half time. Defender Elderson Echiejile headed home on 25 minutes, Brown Ideye netted another after 30 minutes, and Mali defender Momo Sissoko added an own goal.

Substitute Ahmed Musa, who replaced Victor Moses after 53 minutes sent the ball through Mali goalkeeper Mamadou Samassa’s legs.

Mali, who came back from 4-0 down to draw 4-4 with Angola in the 2010 finals, could not repeat feat, they only scored a consolation goal when substitute Cheick Diarra netted in the 75th minute.

But on 13 minutes he gave Ghana a penalty after a simple tussle between

defender Mady Panandetiguiri and Ghana striker Christian Atsu. Mubarak Wakaso scored the penalty. On the hour, Burkina’s Aristide Bance fired the equaliser past Black Stars ‘keeper Dauda.

Jdidi made another strange decision, disallowing Burkina Faso’s Prejuce Nakoulma’s goal after a minor clash with Kwadwo Asamoah. Moments later he sent off Pitroipa for a second booking, for what he judged as ‘diving’, while he had in fact been fouled in the box. The referee’s incredible decisions turned the crowd onto the Burkinabe side, which spurred them on to the win.

At this stage many pundits bet on the Stallions to win the African Cup of Nations, based on the sterling performance they displayed at Mbombela Stadium in the semi-final.
