Ely footie boots a game changer for Kenyan kids Tali Iserles tali@spottedinely.com Getting football boots to protect their young feet will be a game changer for these Kenyan youngsters. Yesterday 172 pairs of shoes and boots, including 73 collected in Ely, were distributed to children at The Walk Centre School in Nakuru by Boots2Africa. The charity enables children and young people living in impoverished areas to stay on the ball by distributing pre-loved sports shoes. Millions of children across Africa have no shoes to wear. According to Boots2Africa, thousands are killed or injured by foot related diseases, infections or snakebites each year. Many others struggle physically because of having to walk barefoot. The charity aims to level the playing field by collecting shoes that British kids have outgrown and giving them a new lease of life in Africa. Yesterday a team of volunteers from Colchester United Football in the Community helped fit out the donated shoes to youngsters at the school, situated in a slum area, after personally carrying them over from the UK. On March 13, Iain Finch, who runs Boots2Africa, visited Ely to collect donations of footwear, organised locally by former Ely College teacher Fleur Patten. In just a week, 73 pairs of shoes were collected. Iain said children at The Walk Centre School were “very excited” to receive their footwear yesterday, immediately joining in a game of football with the Colchester United delegation. “What a day, happy children with healthy, protected feet – what Boots2Africa is all about!” For more information click here. http://www.boots2africa.co.uk

Our Little Hero
Congratulations to Ellee Handscomb who on Saturday did the 2 hours walk from Littleport to Ely. Her target of £300 towards Addenbrookes was smashed long before the walk started and now stands at over £1,000. Along with her trusted friend, Keith the Dog and best friend Alex, Ellee and her family walked the Queen Adelaide Bank before finishing their journey at the Lighthouse Centre. Ellee has been cared for by Clinic 6 at Addenbrookes for as long as she can remember and wants to give something back. PCs Dennis Williams and Alan Radford met Ellee at the finish line and have also raised money themselves at the local station. Fundraising doesn’t stop here, Ellee and friends have already planned another round of cake sales coming soon.

Easter fundraising at King's Ely tops up hundreds of pounds for good causes A feast of fundraising in the run up to the Easter break resulted in King’s Ely students, families and staff raising hundreds of pounds for charity. Staff at King’s Ely’s Medical Centre donned their aprons and staged their own version of the Great Stand Up To Cancer Bake Off. The event saw a whole host of scrumptious cakes, cupcakes and other sweet treats being sold to students and staff to raise money for Stand Up To Cancer. An impressive £232 was raised on the day. Stand Up To Cancer is the annual campaign coordinated by Cancer Research UK and Channel 4 to bring the UK together to accelerate progress in life-saving cancer research. The girls in Withburga House at King’s Ely Senior decided to collect Easter eggs to donate to Ely and Littleport Foodbanks in time for the Easter weekend. The King’s Ely community went all out to support the collection, resulting in 80 large Easter eggs and countless smaller eggs being donated. At King’s Ely Junior, pupils, families and staff went baking crazy in support of the school’s Easter Bake Challenge and Cake Sale. The event raised £421 and a Mosaic Coin Easter Egg Challenge held in the Morbey Hall on the same day raised £176, giving a whopping total of £597. All funds raised will go directly to the Uganda Marathon Appeal, which supports numerous different projects in Uganda, including Mengo Hospital in the capital, Kampala. Funds for the Uganda Marathon Appeal were boosted on the last day of term by the King’s Ely University Challenge. Teams of teachers had everything from their emoji knowledge to their ability to rave dance tested in front of a very enthusiastic audience of students and staff. The event was organised by Sixth Form students Tom Keeling, Emma Fowler and J-P Gilbey; Team Durham (Mr McGrath, Mr Newman and Miss Neudorf) were the winners. More than £260 was raised for the appeal. To discover more about opportunities at King’s Ely, please visit www.kingsely.org.

East Cambs brings the waste home Tali Iserles tali@spottedinely.com East Cambs brought the waste home this week with its trading company now responsible for rubbish and recycling collections. On Tuesday East Cambs Street Scene, the council’s trading company, took over waste collection and street cleansing throughout the district. This followed a cost-saving decision by the council in February 2017 to bring the service inhouse, rather than pay for contractor Veolia. The days of waste collections will not be affected by the move but this week, residents are seeing a slight change to collections following the Easter break. Normal collections will resume on Monday April, 9. Councillor Julia Huffer said: “It was great to see the team before they headed out on their first round under East Cambs Street Scene. “I am immensely proud of all involved in helping
Page 6
us bring the waste home and I look forward to the future of our waste services. The crew are now part of the Street Scene Team with new uniforms and new vehicles.” East Cambs Street Scene director Jo Brooks said the team felt “a very proud moment” on Tuesday as the team had worked “very hard” over the past year to ensure the transfer of waste and street cleansing services could happen. “All Veolia staff have been transferred to the new company and we are determined that residents receive the best possible waste and street cleansing service. “Over the next coming months we will look at improving the service to our residents and improving recycling rates. The crews’ input is critical to this as is ensuring that they feel valued.” Since February 2018, residents have been able to order a second blue recycling bin for a one-off payment of £25. The additional recycling bin will be emptied at the same time as their first blue bin.

Sparks Fly for 2 more Ely groups who benefit from Fireworks Cash Giveaway Thanks to the suggestions of local Ely residents, the team who put on the Ely fireworks display last year have now donated a total of £2,000 to local good causes following the success of the 2017 event. So many amazing local causes were nominated that the team are evaluating many of the other groups that approached us for help. The latest recipients of much needed funds are All in Sound, for their project ‘Sing! Together’ which is a group for people living with dementia, and Helping Little Hands Play, which helps children with disabilities to build their skills. Kathryn from All in Sound said “Thank you once again to Ely Fireworks – without donations such as these we cannot make these projects happen, so thank you from ourselves and everyone who comes along to Sing! Together.” The impact of the funds raised in the 2017 event has spread widely throughout the community, with previous recipients including The Forest School, who were the winners of the guy competition, The Royal British Legion, Global’s Make Some Noise and Ely Hereward Rotary. You can see full details of the donations and find out more about each group and the amazing work they do on the Ely Fireworks website.
The annual fireworks display is a long-standing event which has been running for 43 years and last year, following an accident in 2016, Ely Fireworks Ltd was formed with the sole purpose of continuing the tradition of providing the wonderful Ely community a spectacular, well managed and safe firework display. One thing that hasn’t changed however, the community is at the heart of it. We hope that our bid to manage the 44th Ely fireworks spectacular will be successful and that the Ely community can again enjoy a safe and spectacular evening of fun in 2018. We aim to get the local community involved even further this year with involvement from more local groups. As part of last year’s planning we made every attempt to involve as many local groups as possible. In part due to timescales, some were unable to participate. We plan to approach these organisations again this year to ensure they can be part of this special event. We had some excellent feedback from the 2017 event, with comments such as “Best ever! Spectacular display!” and “Best fireworks I’ve seen in Ely for a long time. Well done all involved!” We hope to bring Ely something even more special for the 2018 event and raise even more funds for local charities and community groups. Press Release by Carly Mason

Ely’s first vegan cafe opens this month
Ely’s fast turning into a hot spot for vegans, with the city’s first meat-free cafe set to open this month.
The grand launch of Lucy at 35 will coincide with Spa Ely’s 12th anniversary – a double celebration.
Bi-annual vegan fairs are already drawing foodies from far and wide to Ely – and now, the city’s celebrating the launch of its first, dedicated vegan and gluten free cafe.
Caroline said: “Our food is not aimed just at vegans, but people who want to try delicious, new flavours that are plant based.”
“Nourish to flourish” is the motto of Lucy at 35, a cafe promising “healthy, wholesome and delicious” plant based foods, based at Spa Ely.
Lucy’s tantalising dishes include falafel, mint yogurt, rocket, pickled red onion and toasted sesame seed wraps, white truffle and mushroom risotto, Thai vegetable and peanut noodles or a vegan twist on mac ’n’ cheese, featuring butternut squash and nutritional yeast.
Lucy at 35 is the brainchild of chef Lucy Andrew, from Little Downham, and Ely businesswoman Caroline Bailey. Caroline had a “light bulb moment” after becoming frustrated at the lack of places to eat out when she found out she was gluten intolerant late last year.
For those with a sweet tooth, desserts include dark chocolate, caramel and sea salt bark and sweet potato brownie with dark chocolate frosting.
“I decided to offer vegan food at 35 Forehill, to create it as a health and wellbeing lifestyle venue, catering for people’s health and beauty needs, both inside and out.”
Lucy, 24, said: “The wonderful thing about these dishes is the purity of them. I believe we need to ‘nourish to flourish’, that this comes from within us and what we eat.

“We will serve gorgeous rainbow coloured foods packed with pure nutrients that are shown to have many health benefits, can increase energy and give you a glowing skin, as well as being very satisfying on the pallet.”
Tali Iserles tali@spottedinely.com
She herself adopted a gluten free lifestyle at the age of 15 after her former partner was diagnosed as coeliac. She found it difficult to return to her previous diet, becoming very bloated after re-introducing foods she had eliminated, such as pasta, bread and biscuits. Lucy said: “Lots of my family and friends now follow a gluten free or vegan lifestyle. We share recipes and tips, which is fun as it can lead to trying new recipes that I haven’t tried before.” The cafe will have a strong environmental ethos. Lucy plans to use the freshest, seasonal ingredients where possible and make her best effort to source locally. It will also serve take-away foods in recyclable and compostable containers. Lucy at 35 will open at Spa Ely, 35 Forehill, on April 21. Science roadshow a huge hit in Ely Tali Iserles tali@spottedinely.com A free science fair has been gaining momentum at Ely Library, wowing visitors with interactive displays about everything from sound waves to sensory processing. Run by Cambridge Science Centre, the free COSMOS roadshow aims to make science accessible to everyone, staff member Jess Bartlet told Spotted in Ely. “It’s been very popular. We’ve had people waiting in front of the library in the morning, waiting to come in. It’s very hands on and interactive.” Charlotte, six, has fun with sound Popular activities included making optical illusions, exploring how the human body works and tricking the mind. Although the roadshow has travelled to The Maltings and Ely Cathedral in the past, this was its debut at Ely Library. The roadshow will run at the library until tomorrow (Wednesday, April 11). Joules seconds sale to help struggling farmers
Tali Iserles
A charity helping farmers in times of hardship is hosting a Joules Seconds Sale in Barway next week. The Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI) hopes to raise funds to help struggling farming families. Established in 1860, RABI is farming’s oldest and largest welfare charity, and most of its recipients are elderly or disabled. RABI helped self-employed farm contractor Simon turn his life around after losing his wife to terminal cancer. Simon had cared for his wife for three years while trying to hold down his job, receiving little outside help and support. Following her death, he became so depressed that he contemplated suicide. The only thing stopping him was the thought of leaving his dog uncared for. His work suffered as a result of his depression and by the time RABI got involved, Simon was almost penniless. The charity helped pay off some of his debts, sorted out his council tax and housing benefit and gave him food vouchers for everyday living. They put Simon in touch with a local farming support group and helped to get him counselling for his grief. In his early 50s, Simon is now on the road to recovery and considering training in pest control to boost his income, which RABI can help subsidise. Last year RABI gave out grants of £1.99 million to 1260 individuals and families, including £297,000 to working families. More than £197,000 went towards paying domestic bills, while £241,000 went towards care home top-up fees for elderly farmers. The charity’s welfare team also helped people claim around £473k in state benefits in 2017 – a 65% increase on the 2016 figure of £287k. Trish Pickford, RABI’s head of welfare, said: “A lot of time and effort goes into providing information for people who contact us, which does not necessarily show up in our grant-giving statistics. This includes things such as signposting people to other charities as well as giving advice on claiming benefits and local authority funding procedures. “The nature of our work today is more time consuming and more complex than in the past.” Anyone with a farming background in need of help can call RABI’s confidential, free helpline on 0808 281 9490 or email grants@rabi.org.uk The Joules Seconds Sale will take place from 6pm to 8pm at the Social Centre at G’s at Barway on Thursday, April 19.

Ely Tigers displayed one of their best performances of the season Ely Tigers displayed one of their best performances of the season with a decisive win over Holt in their last home game. Both teams traded scores in the first ten minutes. The Tigers try came from a solid scrum on the opposition five metre line, Scott Macfarlane picked at eight and ran in almost untouched for a converted try. Holt’s came afterwards, when an inside ball from the wing saw them slip through the Ely defence. The Tigers then turned it up a notch, Man of the match Jacob Muncey crossed twice after he showed terrific pace, once to sprint down the wing and again to find space around the fringes of a ruck. Joel Scott Paul got himself on the scoreboard when quick thinking from the Clark brothers saw Ash take a quick penalty to pass to brother Ryan who fed the ball to Scott Paul who ran the length of the pitch for a converted try. Matt McCarthy crashed over soon after to bring the Tigers try tally up to five at the end of the half. Ely scored three more in the second half, once through Luke Cornwell after he found space down the blindside, and twice through Luke Turner who gassed down the wing and evaded would-be defenders on both occasions. Holt added two of their own consolation tries but were unable to get a losing bonus point in the end. Final score – 54-17. Photo Credit: Steve Wells

Join the tennis Team GB legacy at 10is Academy 10is Academy will once again be offering a quality “Tennis for Kids” programme (TFK), the legacy from Team GB winning the tennis Davis Cup. TFK has become a popular Lawn Tennis Association initiative designed to introduce youngsters to the game. TFK courses at the Academy will be open to boys and girls aged between 6 and 11. Over the past 2 years, at 10is Academy, approximately 50 children have taken part in this scheme each year. The hope is for that figure to be exceeded in 2018, the third year which this program has been run at the Academy. Sebastien Scaux, the 10is Academy director said: “This is arguably the most successful initiative, certainly in terms of participation, that the LTA has come up with. We are extremely delighted to be involved with the TFK initiative since it’s inauguration in 2016.” “We had 5 courses last year and in 2018 that figure will be even higher. We are already launching 7 courses this month.” Six-week lessons were previously
Page 20
offered between April and September, but now qualified coaches are allowed to run courses at any time during the year once they have been trained to implement this new format. Each child to sign up for the programme, at a cost of £25, will receive 6 one-hour lessons in groups of 10 children per coach. A tennis racket and ball to keep plus a personalised t-shirt will be delivered right to your home. A special event involving ex Davis Cup players will take place at 10is Academy (King’s Ely site) on Saturday 16 June 2018. “We want to offer the tennis community in Ely something different.” added Sebastien “That is why we are having Danny Sapsford and Chris Eaton, two ex Team GB Davis Cup players, coming to coach anyone interested in playing tennis. It is a unique chance to be coached by ex pro players who knows what it takes to be playing against the best in the world.” Sebastien Scaux with Alfie Hewett (Wheelchair tennis world number 1).
Legacy Coaching: All profits from the day will be allocated to the provision of free or low-cost coaching. The following will be offered: Primary Schools: We will be offering free tennis coaching to Highfield Special School for the year and depending on the amount raised, to other local schools as well. Families: We will offer a “Cardio Family” course at a reduced rate of £2 per session for the first 6 weeks. If you decide to carry on we will deduct £12 from the next Cardio family course you book. Existing players: Funds will also provide a subsidised new course to existing competitive members. This course will be available to our most regular Matchplay players, and juniors new to Matchplay. To book the Tennis for Kids course in 2018 or your coaching clinic with ex Davis Cup players, visit our “Book a course” page at www.10is-academy. com.

Come & Sing Evensong A chance for everyone to sing Choral Evensong under the magniďŹ cent Octagon of Ely Cathedral. On Saturday 14 April Ely Cathedral has a rare and exciting opportunity for everyone to sing Evensong under the world famous Octagon Tower. The last time the event was held in 2016 it proved extremely popular and a similar response is expected again this year. The afternoon will start with a fun and relaxed rehearsal with the Ely Cathedral Octagon singers, with tuneful and accessible music for the Easter season, before the service itself at 5.30pm. All music will be provided and notes learned on the day, so no preparation is required! Edmund Aldhouse, Assistant Organist at Ely Cathedral who is organising the event said “We promise those who come and sing a warm welcome and an inspiring afternoon in our beautiful Cathedral. Evensong is a tradition as ancient as the stones of the building, and we are delighted to offer everyone a chance to experience it first-hand.â€? To guarantee a place please sign up in advance as soon as possible, via the event page on the Ely Cathedral website. This free event is open to singers over 18 only. Refreshments will be provided. Please see website for further details www.elycathedral.org Evensong Evensong takes place daily at Ely Cathedral at 5.30pm (4pm on Sundays) With its resonant and beautiful words, Evensong typifies the English Cathedral tradition of choral worship. Most of the singing is done by the Choir, the congregation participating through a prayerful listening. The Service consists of psalms, readings from the bible, an anthem, and prayers for the world and the church and for those in need.
