Spotted in Ely Magazine We are now in a routine of doing the e-Magazine and publishing every Wednesday. I need to praise the ladies who work very hard on the various sections of Spotted in Ely. Alison is our “Spotted in Ely Lady” and she is responsible for posting on the timeline, answering the messages and adding the countless number of events sent to us on a daily basis. Tali is the lady in the know. As well as running her own business and vlogging, she writes engaging stories for us. But there are others in the background who keep their eyes open and ears to the ground so we can bring all the latest information as it happens. Digital is the way to go.... 70% of our viewers access what we do through a mobile device and the other 30% is mostly tablet and the remaining on a desktop. Paper is expensive and delivering is just an expense that a small business doesn’t need.

An #eastershoutoutsunday to four-year-old Elianna, from Ely, who put a massive smile on people’s faces at the Princess of Wales Hospital n Easter Sunday. Elianna helped deliver about 20 Easter eggs to elderly patients at the hospital. Mum Michelle said: “It was lovely to see the patients’ faces light up as she handed them an egg and told them, ‘Happy Easter’. Afterwards she said, ‘have I made them happy, Mummy?” We’re sure you have, Elianna! #shoutoutsunday Page 3
Ely Bypass
Spotted in Ely Magazine
Thirteen Million over budget but milestones passed and due to open in October The project to build the Southern Bypass around Ely has now passed several major milestones. Ely Southern Bypass will provide a huge boost for the area and will ease congestion in and around Ely by providing a new link between Stuntney Causeway and Angel Drove. The new route will remove the need for heavy goods vehicles to use the railway level crossing, and avoid an accident-prone low-bridge. Construction is progressing well, with the eastern, central and western embankments built. The abutments, which is where the bridge starts and ends, and the central pier over the railway are also complete. The steel beams, weighing up to 350 tonnes each, which form the bridge decks have now been lifted into place. Appreciating how important the scheme is to alleviate the misery felt by many residents in the area, working with partners the County Council found the initial funding to develop the much-needed scheme as early as possible to get the work underway. Working under tricky conditions such as building on a floodplain and near a national heritage site has meant costs have increased by £13 million, which we’re working with our contractor to minimise. Cllr Ian Bates, chairman of the County Council’s Economy and Environment committee, said: “Ely Southern Bypass has been a much wanted scheme for more than 20 years and there is no doubt it will ease congestion in Ely. “We all took the brave decision to procure the contract early to get the scheme off the ground and the cost of the scheme is the reality of building in such a difficult area. Although this increase in costs is disappointing, we are clear the costs would have been much the same if we had waited, but we wanted to push ahead and get the road built as soon as possible. If we hadn’t taken that decision, the project would have been delayed a further 12-18 months and funding may have been lost. “We have a good working relationship with our contractor and construction is progressing well. We’re all working hard to achieve the best result and get the new road open as soon as possible.” The new bypass is being built across an area of poor ground conditions, which have been even worse and more unpredictable than expected. Building across a flood plain and poor fenland soils has resulted in large amounts of additional work and material being needed.
Page 4

The depth of the foundations for the river viaduct is two thirds the height of the Cathedral – much more than expected. Also, as Ely Cathedral is a national heritage site, a unique, specially designed viaduct needed to be created which has given the team significant challenges. The viaduct will include a separate walkway allowing the public to cross the river. The new road is expected to open in October 2018. Once the bypass has opened, the existing underpass at the low bridge will be improved for pedestrians and cyclists. This project has been funded by Cambridgeshire County Council, East Cambs District Council, Network Rail and the Greater Cambridge Greater Peterborough Local Enterprise Partnership grant – £22m Growth Deal including £16m from DfT.

they have nothing yet they would give up what they do have for someone they have just met.”
Giraffes can’t dance – but they can certainly rock, Humbled by her experiences, Paris recalls being alongside luscious lions, elegant elephants and even given a piece of paper, decorated with stickers and dastardly dung beetles! a note, by one little girl on their final day at the slum school she was volunteering at. The colourful rocks are among a series of painted pebbles created by members Spotted in Ely Rocks “I was so touched that she would give up her to support Ely teen Paris O’Keeffe. stickers for someone like me.” Paris, 17, needs to raise £2000 so that she can return the slums of Kenya, to help out some of the world’s poorest children. Spotted in Ely Rocks is hosting a Rock for Kenya promotion, encouraging members to decorate rocks with an African theme and make a donation to Paris’s crowd funding page. Paris was so moved by her experiences of volunteering in Kenyan schools alongside Ely College students that she’s fundraising to travel there again in August 2019. This time she’ll be accompanied by her mum, Joanne, and friend Verity Grain, 19, who each need to raise a similar amount of cash to make their trip a reality.
Another memory that deeply touched her was when the delegation visited the disease-infested Hilton dump, home to over 130 people, known by locals as “salvagers”. Some of the poorest people in the world, the salvagers have nowhere else to live and survive by eating scraps found dumped on the site and selling cast away materials they can salvage, including jewellery and souvenirs. Paris said: “it was a tough sight to see as children were walking around barefoot even though there was glass all over the ground. It didn’t bother them though, they were all playing and smiling and just being happy with what they had.”
As she had a bit of spending money left over, Paris decided to give each of the stallholders at the dump Paris told Spotted in Ely: “I went to Kenya in October a donation. 2017 and it was the most rewarding thing I have done in my life. The people out there are so kind, “All of their faces lit up when I did that.”

Paris, Joanne and Verity plan to spend 12 nights in Kenya, volunteering in Nakuru’s slums and bringing over donations of much needed items. She said: “The children have really worn down clothes, shoes and lack school equipment along with things to play with. Every day they are fed rice and bowls in a bowl which they have to eat with their bare hands. “Some children have to wait longer and re-use a bowl from another child. Sometimes there isn’t
enough food to feed all of the children so they have to go without.” Paris is raising money through cake sales, car boot sales, and other events. Any extra she can raise will go towards essential items for Kenyan children. “How rewarding would it feel to know that you made it possible for a little girl to have a new dress with a new pair of shoes instead of her old ones with holes in?”

YEH! Secures 'Centre E' on Barton Road in Ely until 2030 YEH!, the charity which runs Centre E on Barton Road in Ely, has been granted an extended lease on the building until 2030 by Cambridgeshire County Council, helping to secure the future of the building. Youth Ely Hub Charitable Incorporated Organisation, a registered charity, was set up by local Councillor Elaine GriffinSingh, with the support of fellow City of Ely, District and County Council colleagues. The charity took over the management of Centre E in 2015 to secure the community facilities and especially to provide a space from which youth services could operate. The County Council granted a short term, “less than best lease” on Centre E at nil cost for the first year, with the organisation paying 10% of income thereafter, but the lease was due to expire in 2020. Since it began, the organisation has gone from strength to strength developing a strong volunteer committee and a huge variety of charities, community groups, social, health, and youth services running out of the building. Rooms are available to
hire at community friendly rates for local groups. Over 50 organisations currently operate from the building which also includes a number of County Council services. Centre 33 is a permanent onsite charity which provides counselling and support services for young people. As well as the large main hall, the building has a number of counselling rooms and a purpose built therapy room for hire on an hourly basis to local service providers. Sanctuary Housing Association is currently looking to support the charity by donating computers and furniture to develop a community computer suite and DVLA have now moved their local theory driving test centre to Centre E. Later in the year, the building will also be hosting a week long free public educational science exhibition for children organised by the Cambridge Science Centre. With the lease extension, YEH! can now apply for grant funding to improve the facilities. The vision includes extending the size of the Main Hall, new lighting and sound equipment, staging
and a kitchen refit – subject to agreement by the landlord, Cambridgeshire County Council. Cllr Elaine Griffin-Singh said: “I am delighted that the County Council has granted Anna Bailey, speaking about her A10 upgrade motion at a Full Council meeting at Shire Hall in May this extension to the lease so that we can pursue the grant funding. The upgrade will improve the Centre for our current users and significantly enhance the offer of new services which will secure the future of Centre E.” County Councillor for Ely South, Cllr Anna Bailey helped to secure the lease in 2015 and supported the effort to get the lease extended. In her statement to the Commercial and Investment Committee at the County Council, Anna said: “Centre E is a wellloved and incredibly well used community building, which has become an absolute hub with an emphasis on activities and services for the community and young people. There is little doubt that this facility is helping to support community resilience in and around Ely.”

Big Issue founder and Social Entrepreneur, Lord John Bird to speak in Ely Co-founder of The Big Issue, Lord John Bird is to be the keynote speaker at Ely Cathedral 2018 Celebration of Business. Lord Bird, who entered the House of Lords in 2016 has endured a chequered life, living in orphanages, on the streets and a spell in prison where he learned to read and write. In the 70’s he worked in the Houses of Parliament washing dishes before setting up his small scale printing and publishing business to which he grew until 1991 when alongside Body Shop owner, Gordon Riddick, “The Big Issue” was created. Although in the early days, the publication was a London magazine, it quickly spread across the UK into other cities and towns and then other countries. It is now produced in 34 countries and available in 24 languages. The company now incorporates many others businesses all set around creating social change. You have the opportunity to see and hear Lord Bird at The Celebration of Business, ‘Tough Times: Good Business’ on Tuesday 24th April at Ely Cathedral. Drayman’s to be run by Three Blind Mice!
A new era for Ely’s micropub is now official as local brewery partners, Dan, Alex and Stu, also known as Three Blind Mice purchase the award-winning establishment.
The pub went through a regeneration a couple of years ago when Andy and Jo Pearson bought the then named Liberty Bell and renamed it on behalf of Andys father to “Draymans Son”.
The Pearsons turned this one-time part-time business into a bustling enterprise which now features high on the Trip Advisor places to visit and has won the 3 available award from the local Camra society for the last 3 years. In a joint statement to Spotted in Ely Jo and Andy said, “The Drayman’s was part of mine and Jo’s hearts. We lived it and loved it. The fact that Jo allowed it to be named after my father said it all. When we decided to sell, Three Blind Mice stated they wanted to buy. It was perfect, we loved the brewery and the three lads are our friends. Our dream is in safe hands and both of us wish them the very best for the future. We know they will take it to another level and be successful.” When taking over the pub, the new owners said, “When an opportunity to be seriously involved in your favourite pub presents itself, it’s hard to refuse. In our humble opinion, the best pub in Ely was up for sale and we really wanted it! Shep and Jo told us their plans to move on to pastures new, and how they wanted to leave their legacy in good hands, so how could we refuse! “The Drayman’s Son, a second home for so many, a community, an institution, a truly wonderful place to hang out and chat with lovely people, was up for the taking and we had a chance to be the new owners! After a meeting (or two) with the solicitors, all was done. And since the start of March, Three Blind Mice have take the helm. With the great support of the fantastic staff, Rob, Glenn, Stan, Zoe, Jacqui, and Ant, The Drayman’s Son is now not just our favourite pub, it’s our pub! So, come down and join us for a beer and a chat whenever you’re free!”

Double decker coffee rig launched to keep up with Ely’s demand for caffeine
Possibly the UK’s only double decker coffee rig has opened this week to help residents get their caffeine fix amid a stunning backdrop of Ely Cathedral. Silver Oak Coffee has unveiled its brew-ti-ful coffee rig to coincide with the launch of Ely Mini Markets today. Susanne Stent, who runs Silver Oak with husband Bruce, told Spotted in Ely that since they first starting roasting their own coffee, residents have become a lot more discerning. “The coffee market has really changed over the last five years. People have become a lot more knowledgeable and expect great coffee.” To celebrate the growth of their business, the couple commissioned Chris Bonwick, of Masters in Sevenoaks, Kent, to design and build the two-storey coffee rig. Seating 15 people upstairs, it measures 6m by 2.4m packed down and about 9m by 3.5m rigged. Chris said: “We’ve built all sorts of units but nothing of this scale and nothing on two storeys. As far as I know this is the first two storey coffee trailer. “One of the biggest challenges was being able to set it up quickly. It had to be under three-and-a-half tonnes so it’s keeping everything lightweight.” The mobile cafe features artwork by Steph Thelwell, from Ely, who regularly sits in the coffee gazebo on a Sunday, sketching scenes from Ely Market. It shows Bruce roasting
coffee beans at Silver Oak’s micro roastery in Black Bank Road. The Stents started off roasting coffee at their garage but decided to rent out a business unit in 2016. Their roastery is based opposite Three Blind Mice Brewery and next door to The Ely Gin Company and Gourmet Brownie – all highly successful local businesses. Susanne said: “We’ve gone from roasting once every two weeks to sometimes roasting twice a week. The demand in Ely has really grown.” Despite being a regular fixture at bustling Stamford and Cambridge Markets, Ely Market holds a special place for the couple as this was the first market they traded at. When East Cambridgeshire District Council asked them to trade in Ely six days a week, they jumped at the chance. Susanne said: “The concept of the mini market is a great one. You don’t have to buy lots of food every week with all the packaging – it’s better to buy little and often. It’s the same with our coffee. People can bring bags back to us and they get recycled in Huntingdon. All the spoons, cups and lids are biodegradable and compostable.” As well as trading ecologically, the Stents try to operate in an ethical manner, sourcing their coffee beans from small farms and co-operatives with a good track record in their communities. “Not only is it ethical but it’s good quality as well.”

Selfless sisters to get locks chopped for kids with cancer
Two little princesses are planning to have their luscious locks chopped off to make wigs for youngsters undergoing cancer treatment. Witchford sisters Izzy, eight, and Poppy, four, have decided to donate their beautiful tresses to Little Princess Trust, after reading about another little girl who’d also gone for the chop to raise cash for the charity. The brave girls will be having their hair cut at Fresh Approach Hairdressers in Witchford on Saturday, May 12. Mum Estelle Kisby said: “We would really love it if we could raise some money for the charity too.” Little Princess Trust provides real hair wigs free of charge to children and young people who’ve lost their own hair through cancer treatment and other illnesses. The family plans to give a percentage of the money raised to The Rackham C of E Primary School, where Izzy is a pupil, and the pre-school, which Poppy attends. People can leave donations at the school, preschool and the village post office, or by http://www.justgiving. com/fundraising/Estelle-kisby. £50 was raised for the British Heart Foundation at February’s LoveFest at the Prince Albert. Here’s Margaret and Caroline receiving the cash at the BHF shop on the High Street. Together, with love, we all raised £100 in total on that lovely day. £50 has already been presented to Pride Ely. Thanks to every single one of you

Corporal Liam West from 1094 Ely Squadron has sent us this report from London “I had a great evening at the Royal Albert Hall yesterday for the Royal Air Force Centenary Gala; of which one of the hosts was Honorary Group Captain Carol Vorderman (RAFAC). Among those attending were RAF Regulars and Reserves, the RAF Police, the RAF Air Cadets, the RAF Regiment Queen’s Colour Squadron (which, as usual, put on an immaculate drill display) and the Central Band of the RAF. It was also an honour to sit in the same hall as Squadron Leader George ‘Johnny Johnson; the last surviving Dambusters raid veteran, and Squadron Leader Martin WIthers; an Avro Vulcan pilot who flew 2 Black Buck bombing missions during the Falklands War. Every act was a fitting tribute to the RAF’s Centenary and helped to tell its story from its formation in 1918 to its 100th birthday today. The event made me proud to be an Air Cadet in the worlds oldest independent air force, and throughout we were all reminded of the RAF Motto: Per Ardua ad Astra Through Adversity to the Stars.“
