Her unique brand of feminine allure has catapulted this buxom belle to the heights of regional and international fame. Born to a Lebanese father and Egyptian mother, Haifa Wehbe forever changed the face of the Arab region music industry when she debuted her unique brand of Arabic pop in 2002 with the release of her first album Houwa El Zaman. Recognized worldwide for her beauty, style, curvaceous figure, and coquettish ways, Haifa is a force majeur in the world of entertainment, often giving her peers in the music scene a run for their money!

It was also in the beginning of her career that Haifa crossed paths with people who tried to hold her back for the commotion she caused in the music scene, “The idea of a pop star wasn’t still understood a few years ago by the industry and some audiences and that’s why I raised havoc,” she says, “but nevertheless, I was embraced and welcome and encouraged by so many and that has gotten me to where I am today,” Haifa continues.

Some may argue that it was hits like Ana Haifa and Ya Hayat Albi that put this star on the map, but Haifa contends that more than one song is responsible for her rise to stardom, “every single played a certain role,” she says. “My debut Agoul Ahwak raised all the attention, Ya Hayat Albi presented my style in Arabic pop and Ana Haifa became my signature mark and set the tone that people would expect a certain sound, lyric and performance that is [exclusive] to Haifa only,” continues the star.

“Performing at Cavalli is always fun. Roberto Cavalli is one of my good friends and we always manage to [hold] the most successful events when we join forces.”

IN Magazine features this glamorous siren on its pages and has the opportunity to chitchat with her. Somehow the conversation culminated into a cohesive interview, something that was a bit of a feat considering the pure electric effect Haifa has over anyone sitting just a meter away from her. Starting out wasn’t an easy road. Although blessed with physical beauty, her appearance may have hindered her at the beginning. What challenged her the most was “Probably proving there is more behind what meets the eye, and there is a story and a depth once you look past the ‘gorgeous/ beautiful/stunning’ face as people would say,” she recounts. She feels her challenge

2011 was a busy year for Haifa, “I’ve been working on some final tweaks for my new album, which is titled Maleket Jamal Al Koon and is slated for release early Spring 2012,” she tells us, “I’ve been in Italy where I shot my video for Bokra Bfarjik and working on the whole album project,” she adds. The busy songstress has also been making various appearances and performances until New Year’s Eve around the region. One who admittedly enjoys photo shoots because they afford her the chance to play dress-up with different looks and styles; Haifa particularly enjoyed the IN Magazine shoot, “it’s always a thrill to see [what] I’m going to look like after transforming to one of the icons and revisiting their looks and styles, but à la Haifa,” she says.

Recently the international phenomenon of Cirque du Soir called on Haifa to lend her name by endorsing its’ debut in the Middle East region. “I’ve been to Cirque du Soir in London before and the concept of circus games while clubbing has been generally applied by other clubs,” she explains. Not at all oblivious to the responsibilities that come with attaching your celebrity name to a product, Haifa was particularly proud to have been the only celebrity singled out from the region to host the launch of Cirque du Soir. Only a week after the circus escapades, Haifa was invited by Italian designer Roberto Cavalli to perform at Layali Cavalli in Dubai. “Performing at Cavalli is always fun. Roberto Cavalli is one of my good friends and we always manage to [hold] the most successful events when we join forces,” she tells us. And the fact that the event was in Dubai is even better for Haifa who has a special relationship with the city she loves. That’s not the only international name that can count themselves among Haifa’s good friends, who else you say? “I’d probably say the D&G guys, they are absolutely sweet and always accompany me whenever I’m in Italy, and Naomi [Campbell]. I have good relations with a lot of people.” An unsurprising fact given how magnetic Haifa’s personality is in person.

Proud of her international recognition and collaborations, Haifa names a single factor that was key in acquiring her international status: “Staying true to my brand,” she confidently asserts. Haifa goes on to explain, “A lot of artists tend to fall victim to changing so much about their identity and music in the hope of catching foreign attention, and they fail. I don’t change anything about my brand image and artistic persona, but actually only develop it to evolve [while staying] authentic and one of a kind.” It was this strong brand that made a duet with Snoop Dog possible, something she is currently filming the video for in LA, and it is this strong brand that made other international collaborations possible. Collaborations like the one with David Vendetta on Yama Layali, and a duet performance with 50 Cent. Haifa has also covered songs by the legendary Lebanese icon Fayruz, and released a children’s album. Now working on her first TV series, it seems there is nothing this powerhouse entertainer can’t do. That is what makes Haifa stand out from among hundreds of Arab recording artists; her unique approach to her career. “My approach to music and style and all together the way I handle the business,”

is what the singer admittedly says sets her apart, “I’m happy that in a relatively short period of about 8 years since I started singing, I managed to achieve so much and become a household name. I owe it all to audiences and fans who embraced me and grew with me,” she concedes emotionally. A self-proclaimed “Tweetaholic”, Haifa had registered her twitter name about two years ago, but it wasn’t until recently that she decided to become personally active on Twitter. The payoff of her decision was massive, “The feedback to me using Twitter has been overwhelming. The fans couldn’t be happier and I do really enjoy my day to day interaction with them. My Twitparty never ends when I start tweeting, and I do the tweeting with my own style, which is why it has been sighted by others, and as usual, everybody and their mama followed to create their Twitter accounts and tweet just like Haifa,” she joyfully explains. When she’s not busy tweeting, Haifa like to keep her ears open for what’s new in music worldwide, “Whatever sounds good will catch my attention. I’d say a lot of pop, jazz, dance, and RnB. Surprisingly, I recently started getting into hip-hop,” she says.

As busy as Haifa is, she’s not all about work. A lover of all forms of art, Haifa fervently explains, “I have a passion for everything that has history and a story behind it. [I have] a flair for antiques, old classic art tableaus, and all things retro. I make it a point whenever I’m in Europe to visit the museums and old auction houses because they have timeless gems.” Haifa is impressed by the new Arab generation who she says is, “very receptive towards all kinds of arts from all over the world. A lot of young talents in all genres are taking steps forward and creating something that’s cosmopolitan yet with an eastern character to fit the culture and I think that’s so refreshing and brilliant. We should pay more attention and provide support for those talents,” she asserts.

“The feedback to me using Twitter has been overwhelming. The fans couldn’t be happier and I do really enjoy my day to day interaction with them.” As for her next album, Haifa tells us we can expect, “Diversity in style, sounds, ideas and pushing Arabic pop to a place it’s never been,” she beams as she proclaims, “I’m very excited about this album.” Nothing is going to slow down this triple threat of a performer. She’s got the beauty, the brains, and the talent to give her longevity in her career. “With every successful step I achieve, I realize more and more how of an influence I have,” Haifa proudly states. Although the star sees herself with a family in the next ten years, she does not plan on settling down, she plans to further her career by, “venturing into other aspects of the entertainment and fashion businesses to sustain my brand as a household name,” she says. As if featuring this glamorous star wasn’t enough of a treat, she takes time to send the readers of IN Magazine a special personal message: “You are good as the last best thing you’ve done. Push yourselves to the extreme and compete with no one but you, and you will reach far beyond your expectations,” oh and of course, “always be ‘IN’.” Well said Haifa! IN

After moving on from the band, Diab launched her solo career as a singer and TV Host, “I love performing,” she gushes, “as long as I’m enjoying myself I will continue to perform. Every time I perform, it’s an accomplishment,” Diab proudly proclaims.

Maya Diab was admittedly, “Lucky enough to be born and bred in the most beautiful country in the world, Lebanon” The eldest of four children, the starlet was endowed with responsibilities from a very young age, “My family life was pleasant but demanding,” she recalls. At age 13, the driven teenager landed her first modeling gig, and her career took off from then on, under the watchful eye of parents who were, according to Diab, “Somehow traditional, yet open minded at the same time.” But Diab had her heart set on a career far beyond the reaches of modeling, “For as long as I can remember, I loved music and I loved to dance,” she tells us, passionately adding, “it’s my life.” So Diab joined the Lebanese all-girl pop-group The 4 Cats in 1998. The group was formed by Lebanese music producer and singer Ghassan Rahbani. Although Diab does not get too much into the history of this period, she is aware that many fans first came to know her and love her as a member of The 4 Cats.

Not one to shy away from the spotlight, Diab has invited in public scrutiny and media obsession. “I know there is a positive and negative side to being a celebrity,” she wisely affirms, “and this is the price we pay for being in the spotlight.” Some regional entertainment news-sites and blogs had recently reported that Diab was criticized for the way she dressed on an Egyptian satellite TV channel where she hosts a TV show “Heik Menghanni”, which Diab quickly shoots down in a razor-blade tone, “I believe that may be a rumor.” She has had her fare share of rumors, and how she handles them is equal parts classy and smart, “I have two ears, sometimes I choose to play deaf.” Away from all the rumor-mill noise, Diab remains focused and hungry, “My singing career has progressed,” she tells us assertively, with an intense look in her eye that almost challenges us to waste any more valuable time on rumorrelated questions. The lady is no joke, she is confident, intelligent, and driven, “I am working very hard on further progression,” she says. Perhaps the great feedback to her song “It seems you don’t know who I am,” is pushing this songstress to aim for new entertainment heights, all while balancing a marriage as well as a TV career, in which her husband Abbass Naser plays a crucial role as TV producer. Diab has much to be grateful for, not the least of which is her team, “I have an amazing support team,” she says with love, “My husband and I have learned to manage and respect each other’s demanding careers. We totally adore, love and support each other and this is what gives me my strength and balance.” SPECIAL EDITION 2015

The adoration of her husband Abbas Nasser doesn’t end there, Diab turns into a love-struck teen when she continues to swoon over thoughts of him, “My husband’s love lifts me to the utmost heights,” she says. We are guessing both emotionally and in business. After all, the siren admittedly tells us that smarts get her heart, “I totally love intelligence; I think that is the most powerful trait anyone can have.” Diab, who was recently chosen as an ambassador for Make-Up Forever, embraces the role with love and pride, “Being the ambassador for MAKE UP FOR EVER is a wonderful friendship; I’ve always been a big fan of MAKE UP FOR EVER. I love working with the product and the team; it’s a professional brand and one that I can rely on to get me through long demanding days on set,” she says. This summer she launched the Maya Diab Loves Aqua Range with Make-Up Forever, her particular favorite is the Aqua Black Eyeliner. Diab’s love for fashion began when she was five years old, attentively watching her mother getting dressed for special occasions, “I thought it was equal to something magical,” she recalls. “As I became a teenager, my mother continued the tradition of making stunning Voguepatterned party and prom dresses.” The starlet is no stranger to the runways of top designer fashion shows world-wide, the film The Devil Wears Prada, one that she loves, reminds Diab of her whirlwind rounds of the Beirut, Dubai, London and New York runways in pursuit of fashion for her appearances. This brings back to Diab the awe and wonderment she experienced watching her mother get ready to go out, she feels that same excitement and the same admiration for the runway fashions. On trend with her love of fashion is her love of travel. Diab’s favorite city to visit is Paris, the city of light. “I’ve been there several times,” she tells us, “and every time I visit I am amazed at the feeling that I get, like I just got IN

home,” she days. “Every trip to Paris is like visiting an old friend. I find the people and ambiance of Paris exhilarating! Each person I meet there has a clear purpose. They cherish every sip of wine they taste. The love of fashion is engrained in the French.It is not uncommon for men and women to be dressed to the nines simply walking to the boulangerie to purchase their daily baguette. Most French men and women are very mindful of Parisian fashion! I love this city so much that I visit as often as I am able.” Today, Diab is a young veteran of the entertainment industry, she has learned valuable lessons, some easily, and some the hard way. Perhaps her most valued lesson is, “That every day brings with it a new lesson. I love to learn.” Diab is also grateful for the number of fans she has acquired over the years, she cherishes them and credits them whenever she can, “My greatest award is the support and love of my fans – this is my accolade and honor.” She is aware she still has a long journey ahead of her, and for that she is prepared. But Diab remains humble, always referencing the powerhouse entertainment legends whom she admires like Fayrouz and Ziad El Rahbbani, hoping one day to follow in their footsteps. Her face lights up when asked what she likes to do on her time off, away from the public eye, “The sun brings be joy,” she says with a big grin, “I love the beach.” Sadly, Diab doesn’t have much time off recently, what with a busy groundbreaking career. Furne One is darling couturier to the pop kingdom’s reigning princesses, and yet his showroom is located on the second floor of Al Hanaa Centre, a decaying mall in Satwa—a blue-collar neighbourhood in Dubai known for its meticulous tailors and tiny Indian cafeterias. The mall’s outdated furniture is mismatched and rundown. Trapped in garish wedding gowns, plastic mannequins look out from shop windows with the vacant eyes of brides stood up at the alter. A Chinese acupuncturist and a hair salon both stand empty of customers, the employees waiting bored inside, playing on their cell phones. Casual in a black t-shirt, leopard print deck shoes, and a patchwork shawl, Furne One paces outside his workshop, speaking inaudibly into his cell phone. I recognize him immediately by his quirky hair; loose curls dyed a bright ginger, springing playfully in every direction from his head. In a soft voice, he invites me to follow him, explaining sheepishly that he has rented this space for ten years and because “We started here. We cannot move now because our local clientele knows this place.” I quickly learn that no matter how big his reputation has grown, this man values loyalty to his clients and friends more than almost anything else. Born in the Philippines, Furne immigrated to Dubai fourteen years ago to launch his line, Amato Haute Couture, and cannot see himself permanently based anywhere else but the melting pot Emirate that he says, “Spoils me with inspiration.” The Amato line first gained international recognition when it was worn by supermodel Heidi Klum, who invited Furne to guest design for Germany’s Next Top Model in 2008. At Top Model he was introduced to singer/songwriter Katy Perry, and in subsequent years to other A-Listers like Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber. When Katy Perry began appearing in his custom creations at events ranging from the MTV Music Awards to her sold out California Dreams tour, Amato’s popularity exploded like one of Katy Perry’s fireworks across the fashion world’s sky, celebrities and GCC “it” girls alike suddenly coveted his signature pieces.

He opens the smudged glass door to the Amato showroom and I follow him blindly, first through a darkened hallway made to look like a garden path, tall urns of fake roses and murals of famous French grounds discernable only in silhouette. He brushes through a pair of velvet curtains, flips on a light and suddenly I have been transported to Furne’s fantasy world—an enormous panelled room, painted bubblegum pink, lit with antique chandeliers, and the best part—row after row of his sparkling gowns to explore. He keeps walking, oblivious to the little girl inside of me clapping her hands frantically in delight, wanting to do nothing but play dress up for the rest of the afternoon, twirling in circles to admire the meticulous beadwork, the rustling of skirts, the length of trains. Most of the dresses glisten with hundreds if not thousands of hand sewn crystals or beads. There is a unique element of movement to his creations, even when they are hanging in wait for the next party. Furne parts two pocket doors to reveal a salon, and casually collapses onto a black velvet chaise, gesturing me to a matching bench. A glass coffee table in front of us is piled high with magazines, each one featuring a celebrity dressed in one of his designs; a bejewelled Jennifer Lopez smiles up at us approvingly. We sit there in awkward silence for a second, trying to read one another. I am immediately struck by his shyness and real vulnerability. Crossing his arms and legs as if to protect his body from the assault of my questions, he actually looks a little nervous to begin the interview. His secretary serves me coffee with milk and I am surprised to taste simple Nescafé rather than the sophisticated European espresso I had expected. Part of Furne’s charm is that although he designs for divas (he refers to them like old friends by their first names: Jennifer, Nicki and Haifa) he is not a diva himself — He can’t list rival fashion houses and doesn’t have many close friends who are fellow designers. His intimate team consists of a cousin who serves as a secretary, and his childhood best friend turned personal assistant. He calls the black t-shirt the male equivalent of every lady’s LBD. “If I find one I like and the fit is okay, I buy twenty of the same shirt. It’s like my uniform.”

Furne regularly turns down glamorous invitations and avoids most red carpet appearances. He says, “I really enjoy going to a party if it is with a friend, like Katy Perry, who is a very genuine, positive girl. If I am not out with good friends, I’d rather stay home. Maybe it’s just my age, because I used to stay out all night when I was younger, get two or three hours of sleep and wake up fine the next day.” He claims to be immune to public praise and criticism, explaining, “I make a collection [only] to please myself,” and describes his growth as a “constant learning process, only ever aimed at attempting to one up his own previous collections.” His self-esteem is quietly fierce and so it makes sense that Furne describes “The Amato woman as confident in herself, “ My woman is unafraid afraid of the dictates of fashion. That’s why I love Cate Blanchett. Check out her red carpet. She experiments. She doesn’t care if she makes a worst dressed list, as long as she cares about wearing that dress. She isn’t a clone. “ He may be drawn to winter settings in Salzburg and Versailles for “gray skies and gloomy climates,” which mirror his own quickly changing moods, but his favorite place of all is actually home in Dubai, where he loves to spend days off in bed, ordering no frills takeout and watching his beloved Tim Burton films over and over. He explains that inspiration for entire collections comes to him when he is alone like this, his brain working subconsciously while his body rests. Sometimes he goes weeks without feeling inspired, and then in a burst of creativity, conjures up an entire collection over a single manic night’s effort. Other times his assistant is bewildered, when just as a collection is nearing completion, Furne looks sideways skeptically, frowns, then demands that the whole look be demolished and rebuilt in a different style. Although he dreams of going global with a ready to wear collection sometime in the future, at present Amato Haute Couture only creates custom one-off pieces—each dress takes two weeks to one month to turn out. More than ninety skilled artists hand create the garments in the workshop next door to the showroom. It’s a long way from Furne’s first days as a designer, when as a young child, he would watch in awe as his mother and grandmother, both fashion-lovers, got dressed to attend high society events. Inspired by their style, he announced that he would grow up to become a designer in a country that at that time didn’t have a single fashion institute to its good name.

Crediting hard work and determination, Furne taught himself to sew clothes first for his dolls, later for his sister, and now for Katy Perry. When I pump him for the details of designing Perry’s California Dreams concert tour costumes, he modestly refers to the project as, “a collaboration” between Amato, Perry, and her stylist team. While conceiving the costumes, he listened to her music nonstop, riffing off her playful and upbeat style: “You see, when Katy told me that she was doing this concert tour, she had the concept in mind already. It was going to be candy themed. I followed her stylists’ descriptions of how the tour would look, feel and so forth. From that concept I made the designs, they suggested some small modifications, and then I went to America for the fittings.”

“THE AMATO LINE FIRST GAINED INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION WHEN IT WAS WORN BY SUPERMODEL HEIDI KLUM, WHO INVITED FURNE TO GUEST DESIGN FOR GERMANY’S NEXT TOP MODEL IN 2008” Again and again he mentions “Tim” [Burton], whom he has never met, but is his greatest influence. Amato’s most famous show to date, It’s Alive, debuted in 2012 at Los Angeles Fashion Week and was a “little Edward Scissorhands and a little Frankenstein.” There is something insect-like about the show’s feel, and watching it, one feels almost as if a new, fierce race of butterflies has conquered the runway. Models saunter with flippant confidence in metal headdresses, masks, wings, or spikes, their makeup bold, their shoulders sharp, the runway snapping wildly with electricity, threatening to blow a fuse at any second. Yet, their strong looks are feminized by exaggerated hips crocheted of lace, their dresses embellished by the most delicate of beadwork, and crystal detailing. A little naively, I ask Furne if in all seriousness, he has seen clients wear an entire look, masks and all, on the red carpet or to a wedding in the region. He actually laughs out loud and says “Of course not! It’s just a fantasy. When I present a show, it’s not about who will buy the clothes afterwards. I create the show to be a unique experience that anyone who attends will always remember. I’m inviting them into my world.”
