Finin Selects Art Jewelry What is Art Jewelry?
This is a question that has been asked again and again over the last 50 plus years, and debated ad nauseam within the Art Jewelry field. Inevitably, whomever you ask will give you a slightly different answer. As an artist, researcher, and curator, Art Jewelry’s defining elusiveness excites me, and while the definition is hotly debated, I can at least give you the definition of what Art Jewelry means to me. Art Jewelry is unique, thoughtful, and beautifully crafted by individuals. Art Jewelry uses the body as a vehicle to move around spaces, locations, and be seen in a variety of situations. Art Jewelry is a way to express yourself to all those you pass on the street, stop to converse with, and interact with you. Art Jewelry is totemic; the pieces that people choose often reflects a deeply core part of an individual, or larger group to which they belong. But, most of all, Art Jewelry is meant to be worn and loved, bear witness to and become imbued with personal memories. Art Jewelry is something to be treasured for a lifetime.
About This Collection When first invited to curate a selection of Art Jewelry for InLiquid’s 20th anniversary Silent Auction and Benefit, I was thrilled but also welcomed the challenge. It seemed to me that the easiest place to start was with following the lead of InLiquid’s year long campaign of “Everyone is a Collector.” This campaign aims to remove the assumption that collecting is only for the affluent, and that everyone should be able to collect art. In reaching out to artists, I tried to find a mix of emerging artists whose works are at a more affordable price point, mid career artists, and to established artists who’s works are highly collectable. Keeping in mind that everyone is a collector, I limited my own aesthetic preferences when choosing work, and presented a selection of work that would appeal to the widest range of people possible; ensuring that there is something for everyone. I hope you all enjoy this collection, and that many of you find a piece that you too would like to collect. - Clare Finin

Hratch Babikian Bio: Hratch Babikian (b. Beirut, Lebanon) received his BFA in 1983 from the University the Arts, studying metals with Richard Reinhardt, Sharon Church, and Leon Luggasy. A goldsmith and silversmith, Babikian’s Work is about the fascination and relationship of the natural world and human kind coexisting. Known for his high precision textures and quality fabrication reminiscent of the hand wrought era of jewelry and silverware, using gold, silver and different gem materials Babikian’s subjects range from oceanic urchins to collections of fossils, Microscopic flora and fauna .

Raïssa Bump Artist Statment: With my jewelry ‘Collections’ I continue my investigation of patterns, weave structures, architecture and nature. I allude to these explorations without suggesting a literal reference. This work is about being reminded of the familiar while not being familiar. It is about taking a second look—noticing the delicate catching of light, reflections of color, simple twist or facet. Very wearable in nature the work is versatile and elegant. Bio: Raïssa Bump received a BFA in metals from Rhode Island School of Design in 2003 and studied jewelry with Giampaolo Babetto at Alchimia in Florence, Italy. She has actively been involved in the contemporary jewelry field since graduation and is skilled at making both intricate one-of-a-kind pieces and beautiful edition collections. Raïssa exhibits nationally, teaches workshops at Penland, Haystack & Arrowmont and is chair of the board of Art Jewelry Forum. In 2015 she founded Reset. The mission of Reset is to educate others to be attentive to their bodies’ signals and provide them with practical SelfTuning techniques so that they can continue creating. Rachel Chalik Artist Statemet: I create wearable pieces addressing human connections to objects, fixating on comfort felt from their use. The bond between the object and the wearer fuels my studio practice, with a focus on psychology. A deep investigation into psychological behaviors informs my work, allowing me to create pieces that generate emotional stability for the wearer. Bio: Rachel Chalik studied jewelry at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia. She moved to New York to work as a goldsmith and bench jeweler. Currently, she works for the Jewelers Vigilance Committee and makes her jewelry in Brooklyn.

Liz Clark Artist Statemet: Each of my compositions is a mantra inspired by flowers and rivets. In my studio, I find rhythm in sawing, drilling and assembling—meditative tasks repeated over and over. The absence of certain elements, like color, allows the form and the movement of the work to be emphasized. I am informed by the subtle beauty of nature. I try to mimic and stylize the patterns and repetition in plant and flowers. My most recent body of work combines precious metal with simple line and shape to create petite metal bouquets and floral landscapes that have a strong, yet delicate and feminine presence. Bio: Liz Clark received her BFA in Crafts/Material Studies from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2006. She lives in Providence, RI where she maintains her studio practice. She is also the Administrative and Events Manager at Metalwerx, a non-profit jewelry school and community studio in Waltham, MA.

Tanya Monique Crane Work Statment: My earrings are made using a sgraffito technique in enamel. The first layer of color is fired in a kiln at 1480º F, then a second layer is painted on and scratched through and fired again. An additional third layer of transparent enamel is under-fired on top to give the earrings a nice texture and reflective quality. Bio: Tanya Crane is a Professor of the Practice in Metal at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts in Boston, Massachusetts. Originally a California native, she reflects both an east coast and west coast sensibility in her work to speak to her nomadic existence thus far. She has been awarded a solo exhibition at the National Ornamental Metal Museum in Memphis, Tennessee and won the 2017 Artist Award at the Society of Arts and Crafts in Boston, Massachusetts. Kate Dannenberg Statment: Direct study of the natural world and formative experiences in wilderness have always deeply influenced the form and texture of my work. Through my work, I am studying convergent evolution. Evolution presents the contradictory idea of infinite possibility under limiting conditions; this fascinates me as I see it reflected in the processes of making. I am constantly discovering pattern and repetition of forms in nature and in the human-made world. As I push myself to make my studio practices more responsible and sustainable, I aim to bring my respect for the natural world to every aspect of my practice. Bio: Kate Dannenberg is an artist and jeweler living and working is South Philadelphia where she co-founded Night Shift Studio, a metal and jewelry cooperative. She received her BFA in Jewelry Design from the American School of Crafts at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Kate makes useful and decorative objects, grounded in a firm belief in the importance of thoughtful craftsmanship.

Maria Eife Artist Statment: I create jewelry by combining new technologies with traditional craft skills and values. My forms are inspired by structure in both the natural and built worlds. I am also driven by the exploration of the processes and materials I use in the creation of form. I build virtual objects with CAD software that are materialized using 3D printing technologies, and the variables in each step inform the final piece. The objects may be cast in precious metals, dyed and/or combined with other materials to create elegant, playful and complex adornments that compliment the wearer and engage the viewer.

Bio: Maria Eife is a Philadelphia-based artist specializing in jewelry. She has exhibited across the United States and in Europe, including the Mercer Museum, Smithsonian Craft Show, Sieraad Art Fair, Joya Barcelona, a solo show at Jewelers’ Werk. She joined forces with the JV Collective in 2016 and the group has exhibited at Munich Jewelry Week, New York City Jewelry Week and at the Baltimore Jewelry Center. In 2017 she won the Excellence in Jewelry Prize at the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show. Her work has been published in Maternal Journal, Lark Books 500 Felt Objects, American Craft Magazine, and Metalsmith Magazine. She received a BFA in Metals/ Jewelry/CAD-CAM from Tyler School of Art.
Mary Forst Artist Statment: I began making pearl jewelry as a way to investigate my sentimentality and the relationship I have with particular objects. I inherited two pearl necklaces from my grandmother at the age of nine and always cherished them. The pearl became an important material to me and design aesthetic took the front seat. In the fall of 2017 I began to work on a small production line utilizing this concept. This line of jewelry is often inspired by traditional designs but has an edge to it that its classic predecessor lacks. My goal is to redesign this traditional adornment and to create trendy, stunning, badass jewelry that can be worn by people of all ages, anywhere and any time. Bio: Mary Forst is an emerging Metalsmith living in Portland Maine.She will earn edher Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the Metalsmithing and Jewelry department at Maine College of Art in 2016. Forst grew up in a small town in Chester, Connecticut allowing for a strong family bond. She is interested in the relationship society has to objects such as the heirloom. Exploring her own sentiment allows her to bridge the past and the present and creates a commentary pertaining to the bygone item. Maricha Genovese Artist Statment: I create jewelry that memorializes the natural world, wearable amulets we can keep on our bodies to encourage our connection to it. Nature is my teacher; in all seasons I move through it and observe. My relationship with nature, forged over time, helps me feel grounded and content when ubiquitous technology has made life feel the opposite. This vital relationship with nature is the inspiration for my current work. Some of my pieces are created to make immortal the wild and undisturbed beauty I see on a hike. Others combine natural forms with more rigid structures and are inspired by my exploratory walks through the city. Wild plants growing out of impossible little spaces remind me to persevere. When my mental perspective feels narrow and confined, getting outside and physically experiencing a broader view is a powerful antidote. Connecting with, nurturing and valuing nature helps me to do these things for myself. Creating wearable, symbolic reminders of these lessons allows for them to be carried wherever I go.

Bio: Starting from very early childhood, Maricha has explored many artistic mediums and materials, always finding joy in visual expression. Making things with her hands has been an important constant throughout her life. Ultimately realizing she could combine her love of creating objects and her longtime fascination with miniatures is what led Maricha to pursue a career in jewelry-making. Since graduating from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia she has gained skill and honed her technique by apprenticing and working for mentors in the field and now has close to 15 years experience making jewelry. Maricha lives and works in Philadelphia where she enjoys inspirational walks through the Wissahickon and creating work in her studio in South Philadelphia.

Luci Jockel Bio: Luci Jockel is a jewelry artist and Lecturer/Coordinator for the Metalsmithing and Jewelry program at Towson University. She received her MFA from Rhode Island School of Design in Jewelry and Metalsmithing in 2016, and her BFA in Studio Art from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 2014. Luci has recently been honored with the 2019 American Craft Council Emerging Voices Award. Her work has been shown at various venues including ACC Conference 2019, Schmuck Munich Jewellery Fair, NYC Jewelry Week, SNAG Conference, and Galerie Marzee. Her work has been featured in publications such as “New Brooches”, Metalsmith Magazine, and American Craft Magazine. Luci maintains a studio practice as part of the JV Collective in Philadelphia, and continues to exhibit her work both nationally and internationally.
The animal remains utilized in Luci’s work are ethically acquired and are found by herself or donated to her. Her work seeks to give a voice to the deceased beings in the hopes of building an interconnectivity between human and animal.

Jillian Moore Artist Statment: My work has always been a blending of the zoological and botanical filtered through abstraction with the intention of creating wearable objects that are both familiar and uncanny. More recently I’ve been incorporating visual references to the minerological realm to heighten the implausibility. I’ve also been ruminating on transgression and how the natural world can sometimes defy easy reduction and categorization. There is a direct link in my current shift, frantic productivity, and risk taking in the studio as it relates to my rage, heightened anxiety, and rebellion against the rise of bigotry in the US, coupled with the desire to amplify the ambiguity, peculiarity, and otherworldly qualities in my work. Now I am exploring the extraterrestrial in the intersections of animal/vegetable/ mineral, and creating objects that are exhuberantly, confrontationally, defiantly weird and examining what it means to embrace that perspective with and on the body. This resulting new work is much more cartoon-like, and has a heightened sense of both fantasy and absurdity. Bio: Jillian Moore received her BFA from Western Illinois University, Macomb, IL in 2004 in Metalsmithing and Jewelry Making, and she received her MFA at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA in 2008 in Jewelry and Metal Arts. She is a full time studio artist working in contemporary jewelry and sculpture as well as an erstwhile writer. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, most recently at the Blickfang in Zürich courtesy of Friends of Carlotta, at SIERAAD Art Fair in Amsterdam, and during NYCJW with Ombré Gallery as part of the travelling exhibition “Glossy”. Sarah Montagnoli Artist Statment: Considering primarily form, color, scale, and wearability, I’ve created a collection of wearable pillowed forms bordered with a scalloped edge and treated with an intense, candylike glossy colored finish. I’ve always been enamored with the hydraulic press and have been working with pressed forms in a smaller scale, adding a fun tactile and visual interest via adding scalloped edges instead of making a clean edge where the pressed form meets the plate. Color is a driving force in my work, and for certain pieces I allow the color to make the decision in terms of the form it would take. Some pieces act as small objects of play and remind me of toy vending machine prizes, pastery’s, and candies. The ambiguity of these forms and their ability to suggest a familiar symbols and objects. just through color and form is important to the body of work. As these pieces are created, I see new moments of play, familiarity, and places for tactility/ pause to occur through varying textures, flock, and rubber inserts. Bio: Sarah Montagnoli is a Jeweler & Metalsmith based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Sarah received her BFA in Jewelry Design and Metalsmithing in May of 2018 from Moore College of Art & Design, and is currently working towards her MFA in Metals/Jewelry/CAD-CAM at Tyler School of Art & Architecture. Utilizing the hydraulic press and a variety of finishes and color applications, Sarah creates pillowed forms that are reminiscent of childhood objects and imagery.

Artist Statment: I craft jewelry that helps the wearer summon their inner fortitude, harness their intuition, and enhance their powerful voice. My jewelry is part armor and part heirloom. Combining metal and mineral in my home studio, I imbue each piece with mettle and magic, making every piece of jewelry a unique and special talisman. Bio: Emily Percival is a rebel. As a 15 year old punk rocker, Emily snuck into an adult education course for metal smithing. From the first time she sparked up a torch and forged metal with hammer, she knew she had found her artistic calling and rebellious outlet. Emily was born and raised in Portland, Maine, where she studded her winter coat, cranked riot grrrl tunes, and dyed her hair every neon color. Through high school she experimented with jewelry and metal art, then received her BFA at Maine College of Art in 2006. After college Emily spent several years on the west coast, sneaking her tools and torch into various apartments, and connecting with other rebellious babes. Now as an adult, she employs her rebellious spirit in her metalsmithing practice, creating jewelry for every grown up punk and refined rebel. Emily Percival Essay by Deborah Kostianovsky It captures your spirit. It’s that spirit that lead you to run a marathon, climb mountains in Bhutan, splash in the mud in your backyard, and spend a month in a Buddhist monastery in India. You’re not be afraid to wear dirty, worn in hiking boots, don sweat pants around the city, and show off your calloused unmanicured hands. Yet it’s that same spirit that allows you to be unabashedly feminine, crave softness and lace and comfort, appreciate candle lit dinners, and wear that black toile and velvet dress. Emily Percival’s earrings decidedly harness and boast that raw spirit. It’s that incongruity, that complexity, that seductive ambivalence that defines you. A mixture of metal lines and circles, in perfect, harmonious balance, reflecting your contradictory nature. Emily herself is a rebel, a kindred spirit. As a 15 yearold punk rocker, she snuck into an adult metal smithing course, and the rest, as they say, is history. She received her BFA from Maine College of Art in 2006. She creates striking jewelry for “every grown up punk and refined rebel.”

Barbara Schumer Artist Statment: My artwork has roots in decorative arts from the 1920’s. I try to incorporate botanical and oriental themes in my jewelry. The use of Japanese gold leaf and brushwork, especially on porcelain, inspire my designs. Bio: I have studied enameling including limoges and cloisonne, from some of the leading contemporary enamelists in the field. I originally studied metalsmithing to compliment my enamels. Jina Seo Artist Statment: My work explores the relationships between body, clothing, sexuality, fetish, and space. I use vintage leather gloves and reconstruct them into symbolic wearables. Bio: Jina Seo (b. South Korea) is Assistant Professor in Metal + Jewelry at Missouri State University. She was chosen as one of the SNAG Emerging Artists in 2016 at SOFA Chicago and was a recipient of Fountainhead Fellowship at Virginia Commonwealth University 2016-2017. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. She received her MFA in Metal at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and her BFA in Metalwork and Jewelry Design at Kookmin University, Seoul, South Korea.

Lindsey Snell Artist Statment: I am an artist, teacher, and writer with a special love for the storytelling power of material. I have been collecting jewelry my entire life (a habit happily inherited from my grandmother) and approach metalsmithing as a way to chart my own story. Trinkets, souvenirs, heirlooms, political pins and more combine as veritable inventory. Compelled to make objects that are immortal, each piece is fabricated and formed with care inside my studio. Creating one-of-a-kind work and limited production jewelry, I share jewelry as the convergent site of history, culture, and material study. Bio: Lindsey Snell is based in Portland, OR specializing in limited production and one-of-a-kind jewelry and metalwork. Snell created her eponymous brand as a home for her vision of jewelry as a critical tool for self-expression in a world where our digital lives make our identities more ephemeral than ever. She exhibits and sells work across the US and teaches traditional metalsmithing and jewelry from her studio school, Custom Deluxe in Portland. Snell received a BFA and MFA at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and has been working with a jeweler’s saw since she a highschooler growing up in Chicagoland.

Vivienne Varay Artist Statment: Obsession, abundance, and repetition drive the creation of my work. These pieces focus on my experiences with jewelry, and my relationships to those around me. The X shape is an important symbol of sexuality, restriction, and connection. This collection of jewelry depicts my growing feelings of confinement as a result of the emotional environment I have built for myself. Through making I am able to share my experiences in order to find acceptance and understanding. Bio: Vivienne Varay is a conceptual artists and contemporary jeweler. During the isolation of growing up as an only child of a single mother in Southern California and later Arizona, Vivienne found solace through crafts at an early age. While studying for her Bachelor of Fine Arts at Arizona State University, she discovered that jewelry gave her the opportunity to create objects that are intimate, audacious, and provocative. Through her work she captures emotionally impactful moments of her life and relationships. These works are often exaggerated confessions of love, obsession, suffering, and acceptance. After completing her Master of Fine Arts from the University of Georgia, she relocated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where she continues to work out of her private studio space.
