hopefully, I'll finish High School with a bang!

In my Key Club life, I've been working with the Member Development committee, gearing up for DLC (and retirement), and, most importantly, I’ve been designing this magazine! With that, let me welcome you all to the fifth issue of Key News, which also happens to be my final as the bulletin editor for the Indiana Key Club. I sincerely hope you enjoy it!

SECRETARY-TREASURER MAYA NARAYAN

Hi everyone! This may be my last update as SecretaryTreasurer of the Indiana District of Key Club. Isn't that crazy? Since the last update, I completed some of my IB Internal Assessments (yay!!), finished applying to

colleges, got accepted into some colleges earlyaction, and finished all of my classes (even AP Calculus) with flying colors for the first semester!

This past semester has been extremely challenging, so I'm very proud of myself and all of you for making it out in one piece! One fun thing I did over winter break was a New Year's photoshoot for the Top 3 of Elkhart County's 4-H Fair Queen pageant. I was also cast as Wednesday Addams in the musical "The

Addams Family,” so I have been binge-watching "Wednesday" (like most people). In the Key Club aspect, I've been preparing for the ever-so-important DLC! Hope to ll h C owne Plaza from February 24-26th!

WEBMASTER JACOB LEE

Hello everyone! I hope you are all doing well! I know I am now that the second semester has started for me! I also have been working with the Marketing Subcommittees to create new graphics and posts for the District's social media! Outside of Key Club, I have committed to Washington and Lee University with a QuestBridge full-ride scholarship! I am currently preparing to get ready for college as my senior year is ending. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know via email or text!

GOVERNOR'S PROJECT

The Indiana District proudly supports the Trevor Project and its goals to provide crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBTQ+ youth nationwide. We want to thank everyone who donated to the Governor's Project! We are so grateful for your generous contributions and support. We still have a long way to go before we reach our goal of $2,500. Every dollar counts and will help us reach our goal. All donations will go directly towards helping LGBTQ+ youth with the mental health resources they need during these difficult times. Your support will make a difference in someone's life - let's work together to show them that we care about their well-being!

Thank you for your consideration and generosity as we strive toward our fundraising goal for the Trevor Project! Excited to donate? Visit give.thetrevorproject.org/inkeyclub!

INTERNATIONAL TRUSTEE HOPE ROUNDCOURT

Hello Indiana!

I hope you all had a great start to 2023! The International Board has been hard at work, and I’m excited to make an important announcement for you.

ICON Scholarship Applications are now open! Unlike in past years, this year's rubric will give you bonus points simply for being far from Anaheim to account for the increase in airfare. The farther you are from Anaheim, the bigger the boost your application will receive.

Click here to find out more!

The goal is that the scholarship should provide funding for about half of your trip to ICON so that you, your Key Club, and your Kiwanis club may have less of a financial burden. More information will be available soon, and if you have any questions about the scholarship, let me know.

Also, our Sistrict website has officially been launched! You can view various resources about dues, marketing, service, and my frequent updates. You can view these items and more using this link.

We want to make sure that we cover every detail, ranging from small to large, to make sure that your experience will be great! Currently, we are organizing workshops, guests, service projects, presentations, prizes, and more! The Events & Planning Committee has a lot of workshops planned that you will be able to

There is a lot of planning that goes into weekend events, like the District Leadership Convention, and it is important that each and every topic is gone through. In addition, the Events & Planning Committee has been prepping decorations and t-shirts, so that they will be ready to order. K-FAM AND CONNECTIONS

Hello Indiana Key Club! My name is Alyssa Toscani and I am the committee chair of the Kiwanis Family and Connections committee. For the last quarter of the service year, our committee has been very busy completing our directives. Some of the directives we have accomplished thus far are: reaching out to people interested in hosting workshops at DLC, continually working with the service project directory to add projects that Yours in Service, Alyssa Toscani

include our preferred partners and the Kiwanis Family, and collaborating with our International Trustee Hope to increase Indiana’s involvement at a Sistrict level.

Throughout the rest of the quarter, we will continue to make graphics for DLC with the Events and Planning committee and for Governor Louis’ Governors Project. And we will be finishing up the quarter by working with Events and Planning on how to support Key Clubbers going to DLC! We have had a very successful last quarter of the service year and I am very proud of each and every person on our committee. Shivam, Mackenzie, Javier, Jessica, and Jeff: thank you so much for all of the hard work that you have put in throughout this past service year. It has been such an honor to work with you all and I cannot wait to see what you all accomplish next! I love you guys!

SERVICE

The Service Committee has been up to many different things lately! Be on the lookout for a new Canva for a Non-profit video. This allows your club to get all the features of Canva for your Key Club, or other non-profit organization you work with! Canva is good for making recruitment posters for your club and presentations for different service projects you may be doing! Along with this, there are more service project

ideas available for your clubs. They range from summer to winter, and even service projects you can do on your own, or with a group. You can find all of this on the Indiana Key Club website. Along with this, our Service Project Directory submission form is still open for submissions. This is where you can look for service projects for your own club, as well as get highlighted for your own submissions! Be on the lookout for your club to be highlighted on the Indiana Key Club Instagram :) Third, (maybe the most exciting), are posts about DLC! Our committee members have been hard at work making posts for you to learn about different service project opportunities at DLC! Make sure to register for DLC ASAP to do different service projects, and most importantly, have fun!.

MEMBER DEVELOPMENT

The Member Development committee has been working hard! Our District & Club Resources subcommittee is making a "Why I joined Key Club" video for our social media platforms. It's been super exciting to hear the stories of why people joined and I can't wait for you all to see it! We hope that potential new members will be inspired by the video and give Key Club a try! Our Chartering & Reactivation subcommittee has been

tracking Kiwanis' interest in sponsoring clubs, and working hard to support the chartering of Whiteland Community High School! I’d like to give a special shoutout to Paige for doing an amazing job supporting our future club. The Member Recognition subcommittee also has a lot on its plate: we’ve been working on an email template about the Member Recognition form, finalizing graphics for the monthly recognized members, and compiling a list of members to be recognized at DLC! This will help to ensure that all members have an opportunity to be recognized for their contributions to their clubs. I want to make sure that the recognition of our members is a top priority and that their efforts are acknowledged and celebrated. I would like to thank our members Paige Hein, Ella Freimuth, Raghav Bakshi, and Ishna Kesti for their hard work so far, and our adult supervisor Colin Prince for his support!

LtG projects

During the month of November, the Sycamore South Division embarked on a project to raise money for an organization that is extremely important to our communities: Riley Children’s Hospital. We all have a great appreciation for Riley as it has supported many of our friends, families, and classmates.

On Friday, November 18th, elementary schoolers celebrated PJs for Riley by wearing their favorite pajamas to school and by bringing in a donation of up to $1. Leading up to PJ Day, we provided information about Riley Children’s Hospital, why it is important to our community, and how together we can make a big impact while also having fun. The goal of our project was and has always been to help people at Riley Children's Hospital, and we are excited that this coincided with the opportunity to learn about service, leadership, and love for their community!

With all of that said, PJs for Riley raised $2,517.38 throughout four elementary schools: Fall Creek Elementary School, New Britton Elementary School, Thorpe Creek Elementary School, and Promise Road Elementary School. Each school contributed the following amounts:

Fall Creek: $814.00

New Britton: $661.58

Thorpe Creek: $609.88 Promise Road: $431.92

We are incredibly grateful that we were able to not only fundraise for the research and operations happening at Riley but also spread awareness for this organization. We find great pride in the support that was provided by all participating schools; without the help of my community’s youngest leaders, PJs for Riley would not have been successful.

LtG projects

During the months of November and December, the Duneland Division raised funds and awareness for a phenomenal local charity known as the Independent Cat Society. The ICS is a no-kill cat shelter in Westville, IN that has been finding forever homes for felines since 1973. Even as I (Duneland Division Lt. Governor) am writing this, my cat, Tiger, who was adopted from the ICS is cuddled next to me, so this charity is near and dear to our hearts.

The Duneland Division community showed their support for the organization in a multitude of ways. From monetary donations from Key Clubs to raising awareness for adoptable cats, to receiving support from local Kiwanis, I would call this project a success! I am beyond proud of #TeamDuneland for their dedication to divisional involvement.

We started on this journey with the goal of raising $500, and I am excited to announce we have reached our goal! Thank you to Washington Township High School Key Club, La Porte High School Key Club, Chesterton High School Key Club, Valpo Noon Kiwanian Diane Warren, and Valpo Noon Kiwanian Joann Tomasic for your monetary contributions, which go straight to caring for the cats. The cats at ICS appreciate your donation!

However, there are still many felines at the shelter searching for a kindhearted caregiver to adopt them. I encourage you all to check out this link here for the many cats in need of a forever home or click here for their website. Once again, thank you all so much for supporting the 2022 Duneland Division Lt Governor Project for the Independent Cat Society!

LtG projects

Hello! I am Nicole Bunag, the Lieutenant Governor of the Johnny Appleseed Division. For my Lieutenant Governor project, I chose to raise crayons for the Crayon Initiative! The Crayon Initiative collects crayons from around the world, removes the paper off of them, re-melts them into their specific colors, and finally re-molds them. Then, with all of these crayons, they have reprocessed, they give them out to children in hospitals to hopefully put a smile on their faces and make their day a little brighter and happier! The reason they remove the paper is that it can be a health hazard for children in hospitals. The health hazard includes the paper carrying bacteria and spreading it to the children, which would not be good for their health. My goal for the Johnny Appleseed Division was to raise a total of 20 pounds from all 3 schools in my division, which include Angola High School, Fremont High School, and Garrett High School. Fremont High School did a great job and was able to raise 8.3 pounds of crayons, which is also the total amount that was collected! The 8.3 pounds that were raised were able to help around 100 kids!

WHAT IS AN LTG PROJECT?

An LtG Project is a division-wide project organized and executed by your division's Lieutenant Governor! The LtG Project may be donation-based, where your LtG chooses a cause and organizes a way to donate to it, or volunteer-based, where they organize a service project and invite the entire division to serve together. If your division was not included in this section, that could mean one of two things: your LtG project has not happened yet, or your division is vacant. If your situation is the first, ask your officers or advisor! They should have received information on your Lieutenant Governor's project by now, and if not, contact them. If your division is vacant, that is, does not have a Lieutenant Governor, you will not have an LtG Project for this service year.

Having a Lieutenant Governor is extremely important for your club! If your division is vacant, remember to encourage club members or officers to run for the position.

January Board meeting

Our final board meeting for the 22–23 term was in January! We arrived on the 21st and went right to work. We were able to update everyone on our lives and positions and hear the amazing work that everyone has been doing! It was really exciting to learn about all of the service projects our Lt. Governors have been organizing and the change they are making in their community. We also had two committee breakouts!

The first was a time for committees to try to wrap up their directives, and the other was an all-hands-on-deck work time to prepare for DLC 2023.

There were many different informative presentations given on topics such as running for office at DLC, House of Delegates, elections, and how to find a successor. Thank you to the Executive Board and Arrowhead Lt. Governor Camden Bell for presenting to the Board! We also had time to participate in fun activities on public speaking, guessing the board member through baby photos, and reminiscing over the wonderful service year we’ve had so far.

We had the opportunity to listen to our Indiana Kiwanis Governor, Bruce Andrews, give us an update on how he has been and say some lifting words to encourage us to finish the service year with a bang! Our IP Indiana Kiwanis Governor, Taka Ogata, also stopped by to talk to us and give us letters written from Key Club Japan. At DLC 2022, one of the service projects included writing letters to them, and we were finally able to read their responses!

Overall, our January Board Meeting was a fun and productive weekend, and we are really excited for you all to see what we have been working on for DLC 2023!

PAGE 13

Fremont High School has been amazing at communicating with their LtG, Nicole Bunag. They have been cooperating with her throughout this entire year, and are always trying their best to attend events! They have attended all of Johnny Appleseed’s Division Council Meetings, as well as helping Nicole raise 8.3 pounds of crayons for her LtG Project benefitting the Crayon Initiative.

DLC 2023 is ALMOST HERE! The event will take place at Crowne Plaza Indianapolis Airport this February 24th! It will be a full weekend event, starting Friday at 6:00 pm and ending Sunday at 11:30 am EST. Registration is officially over, so it's time to prepare ourselves; here are a few reminders.

If you are a candidate for a Lieutenant Governor position, do not forget to prepare your speech! Candidates for Executive positions must deliver 2 speeches.

The elected 2023-2024 board will have to stay an additional hour after adjournment. If you're running, prepare your transportation accordingly. You may NOT leave the hotel for the entire duration of the event.

service projects

It can be hard to find service projects during the late winter and early spring times, but it is important to continue to volunteer. If your club is struggling with service ideas, here are a few you can try:

Get involved in a local school: You can volunteer as a reading buddy, mentor, or tutor at a nearby school. Not only will you be making a difference in a child's life, but you'll also have the opportunity to connect with the community and inspire the next generation of leaders.

Spread love and cheer: Valentine’s Day is almost here! Organize a Valentine's Day card drive for seniors or children in hospitals. This simple yet meaningful act will bring a smile to the face of those who may be feeling lonely or isolated.

Serve a helping hand: As the weather gets colder, many soup kitchens see an increase in demand for warm meals. Give back by volunteering at a local soup kitchen and making a difference in the lives of those who are less fortunate.

Get your hands dirty: Now is a great time to help out at a community garden and prepare for the spring planting season. Not only will you be giving back to the community, but you'll also get to enjoy the great outdoors and connect with nature!

Make someone's day: February is National Random Acts of Kindness Month, and small acts of kindness can go a long way in making a difference in someone's day. Spread positivity and joy by participating in a random act of kindness campaign and making a difference in your community.

Help raise funds for a cause: Many non-profit organizations rely on fundraising to continue their work. Organize a fundraiser like a silent auction, a bake sale, or a concert, and make a difference in your community while having fun!

fundraising 101

Starting a fundraiser can be a challenging task, especially when you don’t where to begin. From setting a fundraising goal to identifying a target audience, there are many different elements to consider. It will take time, effort, and patience to get the ball rolling, but you can make it happen! To help you on your journey, here is a guide on how to start it:

Identify a cause that you are passionate about: This could be a charity, a community organization, or a cause that is close to your heart. This will be what keeps you going when things don't go exactly as planned, so make sure to choose something you will stand by, even during challenging times.

Set a goal: Decide how much money you want to raise and set a goal for your fundraising. It is good to set a goal early on so you have a clear objective.

Create a plan: Come up with a plan for how you will raise money. Fundraisers can range from bake sales, car washes, and lemonade stands, to recreational sports tournaments. If your goal is hard to reach, don't be afraid to organize multiple events to reach it!

Get other people involved: Enlist the help of your club members, classmates, friends, and even family to assist with your fundraising efforts. More people means more hands on deck!

Utilize social media: Today, social media is such an integral part of our lives that it can be one of the best ways to reach a larger audience! You can even open for donations from all over the world.

Show appreciation: Remember to show appreciation to your donors, and even provide updates on how the money is being used! There is no way any fundraiser could work without donors.

Have fun: Remember to have fun! While fundraising is not exactly something you do to pass the time, it can be an amazing experience for everyone involved. Fundraising and community service can be fun if you let them!

PAGE 17

And that concludes this issue of Key News! Thank you so much for reading it to the end, and for accompanying me throughout this service year. I have learned so much writing these magazines, and if you have learned at least a tiny bit by reading them, my goal has been achieved. Although this is my last magazine, my term is not over yet! I am still here in service and friendship and not even my retirement can change that. Don’t be a stranger!
