B There is a poem titled, The Church of the Warm Heart, by John Milton Moore, which I have used for many years that one of my sons in ministry, Reverend Dr. Julius H. McAllister, Jr., and I have revised and written anew. Using some themes, concepts, and phrases of mine and those of other pastors he was mentored by, some of whom are now bishops, we have written a new poem titled, Reimagine the Church of My Dreams.

WHERE WE WILL, Not forsake the doctrines of the past, But a church that builds on the foundations of the historicity of yesterday while Making new pathways that will bring us closer to the kingdom of God here on earth and in heaven.

A CHURCH THAT HAS MOVED BEYOND THE FOUR WALLS OF THE SANCTUARY, Where Homiliticians, Heralds, and Handlers of the Holy, Prelates, Prophets, Proclaimers, and Preachers of the gospel, may be seen through platforms such as Zoom, Facebook Live, You Tube, Instagram, Periscope, Brightcove, and Free Conference Call, Sharing the good news of Jesus the Christ and telling the world that our Savior is still sovereign during times of peace or a global pandemic.

LET US REIMAGINE A NEW CHURCH, A church that accepts and affirms the ideas from Generations X, Y, and Z, A church that looks for guidance and direction from baby boomers one and two, A church where there are no big I’s or little you’s, A church where no one is frowned upon or made to feel inconsequential, A church where protest, sociopolitical movement, and diverse rhetoric are not only welcomed but encouraged.

A church where its PR doesn’t go before its production.

REIMAGINE A NEW CHURCH, A church that is not monolithic in thought, but at the same time knows there is a commonality within our humanity that makes us the same, Which is, Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forevermore, A church where the work is all divine, A church where Love makes the difference, A church with a shepherd’s heart, A church that strives to be more like Christ, A church where there is a place for everyone.

The German atheist philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche wrote, “I might believe in the Redeemer if his followers looked more redeemed.” The 2019-2020 Bethel Annual Report is a written and pictorial account of the many opportunities God provided to reflect the nature of Christ – His love, His transforming power, and His grace – by the works He placed before us as a church family. With humble and grateful hearts, we acknowledge all that has been accomplished was of God and not of ourselves. It was He who “strengthened us in every good deed and word.”

We pray that others were able to see Christ in us, and were stirred to believe and trust in the Redeemer.

It is with exceeding joy and thanksgiving that Deana and I share the work and witness of the Bethel AME Church, Tallahassee, during the 2019-2020 Conference Year.

The Pastor’s MESSAGE

he year was one of extraordinary contrasts. After hosting the 154th Historic Florida Annal Conference, Bethel, empowered by the Holy Spirit, and armed with God’s endless supply of grace, enthusiastically began to pursue our Christian mission to glorify God – preaching and teaching the gospel message, making disciples, reflecting the attributes of Christ, and serving others. By mid -year, however, church life as we know it, was disrupted by unforeseen challenges brought on by the Coronavirus Global Pandemic. In-person worship service and Church School were conducted virtually, utilizing audio teleconference. Lenten observances and other assemblies were cancelled, and outreach programs were moderated.

This report provides evidence of the implementation of God’s good and sovereign rule during the diverse environments that existed prior to and during the pandemic. It is a testament to Bethel’s faithful stewardship of God’s grace, its trust in and obedience to a God who promises to supply our needs in all circumstances, and its unified resilience and adaptation to new ways of doing church.

I praise God for the leadership of Bishop Adam J. Richardson, Jr. The wise, trusted counsel and support he provided as we journeyed through these unprecedented times cannot be measured. I also express profound appreciation to Supervisor Connie Speights Richardson for her extraordinary support of and abiding affection for the Bethel family. To Presiding Elder Carlton Taylor and District Supervisor Trina Taylor, thank you for your constant encouragement and contributions to our ministry efforts. I am grateful to the Bethel family for your unparallel cooperation and generosity, especially during the past five months of anomaly; and for letting the light of Jesus Christ shine through your good works.

I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the phenomenal support of the ministerial staff, who graciously helped to provide the fundamental ingredient of worship by their powerful proclamation of the Word of God. I am also thankful for the competent, reliable service of the administrative staff, Mrs. Sylvia Petties and Ms. Carolyn Daniels; to Mr. Jamarien Moore, Music and Creative Arts Ministry Director, who convened Worship Calls and blessed us with inspirational vocal music; to Church School Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Debra Austin and Mr. Aundre Bryant, respectfully, who provided sterling leadership for Virtual Church School; to Dr. Mary Smith and Mr. Darryl Jones, Steward Board pro tems and Trustee pro tem Mr. Rick Mathis, for their steadfast support and encouragement; and for the many other Bethelites who labored behind the scenes to the glory of God. I extend special thanks and appreciation to Dr. Barbara Cotton for the time and commitment she invested in the production of this report; to Dr. Mary Smith for her valuable contributions, and to Mr. Kenneth Austin for his outstanding photography.

WORSHIP

Bishop Adam J. Richardson, Jr., Presiding Prelate of the Eleventh Episcopal District of the AME Church, began the Annual Lenten Worship Series on Ash Wednesday with an edifying and motivating message, “Ash Wednesday and Three Spiritual Disciplines,” in which he declared meaningful prayer, fasting, and stewardship as essential disciplines for Christian living and growth. The series continued with the faithful proclamation of the Word of God by the Reverend Matthew Watley, Senior Minister of Kingdom Fellowship AME Church, Baltimore, Maryland, and the Reverend Stanley Walker, Senior Minister of Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, Tallahassee, Florida. Due to the onset of the Coronavirus Pandemic (Covid-19), the remaining Lenten services were cancelled.

Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe.

uring the 2019-2020 Conference Year, the Bethel family gathered together weekly with grateful praise and joyful hearts to offer genuine worship to our God. The Word of God guided and dominated our services.

The fervent preaching of the Reverend Dr. Julius H. McAllister, Jr., Senior Minister, and associate ministers – the Reverend Dr. Eric Little, the Reverend Dr. Ronald Glenn, the Reverend Dr. Michael Winstead, the Reverend David Williams, the Reverend Marian Ellis, and Brother Warren Bowers (Licentiate) – glorified God. Worshippers were edified, inspired, and motivated to spread God’s Word and to serve Him. The Bethel family was also blessed with an addition to the ministerial staff – the Reverend Edith Holiday Austin.

Bishop Adam J. Richardson, Jr. - Ash Wednesday During the first half of the conference year, the Music and Creative Arts Ministry, under the direction of Brother Jamarien Moore, provided sacred music and liturgical dance that heightened attention to God as the center of our worship. On Old Fashion Sunday, the adult choirs rendered outstanding accompaniment for Grammy Award Winning Artist, Dottie Peoples, as she blessed worshippers with several of her popular recordings including the timeless “On Time God.” Our youth and teenagers played an essential role in the Music Ministry through their participation in the Caleb Generation and Joshua Generation Choirs.

We thank them for using their voices to praise God and to bless the congregation.

We are thankful for the many opportunities to hear visiting clergy preach God’s Word on special occasions. They include the Reverend Cecil Williams, Senior Minister of Gregg Chapel AME Church, Ft. Walton Beach, FL, on First Family Anniversary Sunday; Bethels thirty-third pastor, the Reverend Dr. John Frank Green, President/Dean of the Turner Seminary, Atlanta, GA, on Watch Night; the Reverend Dr. Roderick Belin, President of the Christian Recorder, Nashville TN, on First Family Communion Sunday; and Bishop Reginald Jackson, Presiding Prelate of the Sixth Episcopal District of the AME Church, on Old Fashion Sunday.

In response to the Coronavirus crises, Dr. McAllister took immediate steps to promote the safety and health of worshippers. He counseled and encouraged

the congregation to “remain positive, be patient, be prayerful and God will provide.” With the intensification of the virus and after prayer and careful weighing of alternatives, a unified decision was made to suspend worship and all other in-person gatherings on March 17th.

On March 22, in-person worship was replaced with the Sunday Worship Call. Using the conference call format, the congregation was invited to participate in virtual worship each Sunday at 9:15 a.m. Dr. McAllister’s initial worship call message, “From My Heart to Your Heart,” reminded callers of the Christian response to adversity, citing Romans 8: 28 and 2 Corinthians 4: 8-9 that teach the importance of hope, perseverance, and reliance on God’s purposes, God’s power, and God’s loving presence during times of uncertainty. Callers were admonished to seek God in prayer and to have faith in God’s deliverance. He also encouraged parishioners to balance faith and common sense – that in-person worship was not temporarily suspended out of fear, but out of responsible concern for the health and security of members of the congregation and the community.

Virtual worship continued through the remainder of the conference year. Dr. McAllister and the ministerial staff worked vigorously to ensure that worship calls were pleasing in God’s sight, spiritually gratifying to the caller, and that although we were not assembled

together in the sanctuary, God was on the call. Efforts were made to include established elements of corporate worship as much as possible. Minister of Music Brother Jamarien Moore prepared callers for worship by singing hymns and songs that centered our thoughts on God. Scripture was read with clarity and authority. The preaching of God’s Word continued to dominate our worship.

Sermons preached by Dr. McAllister and associate ministers proclaimed the Gospel of Jesus Christ and provided encouragement and hope to worshippers who called in from many parts of the country. Reverent prayers of adoration, confession, and petition were offered with conviction. Using consecrated, prefilled communion cups, containing a wafer and juice, worshippers participated in Holy Communion on the first Sunday of the month. The Invitation to Christian Discipleship was extended to persons who wished to accept Christ as Lord and Savior and/or become a member of the Bethel family. Virtual Altar Prayer Call provided an opportunity for worshippers to bring their concerns before the Lord, followed by intercessory prayer by the pastor.

Praise God for blessing Bethel’s efforts to offer acceptable worship unto Him during these troubling times .

The Bethel family is grateful to God for the countless opportunities He placed before us to grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ and to be transformed in His likeness as encouraged by 2 Peter 3:18. Weekly Bible study classes, Church School, printed materials, Christian Education training, and a variety of other practices were included in our continuing efforts to grow spiritually.

ible study classes, conducted each Tuesday at noon by Dr. McAllister and on Wednesday evening by Reverend Dr. Eric Little, were attended by a committed number of followers who gained spiritual edification and life-changing direction from the teaching of God’s Word. Due to the Coronavirus, Summer Lay Bible study, facilitated by Dr. Debra Austin and Dr. Brenda Jarmon, was conducted via Zoom. The seven-week study, “Discerning the Voice of God: How to Recognize When God Speaks,” consisted of video teachings by Priscilla Shirer followed by on-line discussions. Overwhelmingly, participants expressed having been blessed by the experience. We are grateful to the superb

Opportunities to grow in our relationship with God by studying and acquiring a better understanding of His Word and applying it to our lives were provided each Sunday by nine age- appropriate Church School classes. However, the global health care crisis resulted in the termination of inperson Church School. Thus, on Sunday, March 22, 2020, we began Virtual Church School (VCS) following the Pastor’s Worship Call, utilizing the audio conference system. Church School classes, including youth classes, provided leadership. A special expression of gratitude is extended to the inaugural participants of VCS: Sister Mary Smith, Sister Brenda Jarmon, and Brother Zubie Metcalf who provided the lesson review. These mighty servants of God were fearless pioneers in this new format and established the standard of excellence for VCS.

he Coronavirus did not prevent the annual Church School Promotion Program. Ten students, who passed from one class to the next, were recognized on June 14. They include Karys Anderson, Sunny Davis, Saveria Winstead, and Titus Fulton – Beginners to Primary; Skyler Davis – Primary to Junior; Caleb Anderson, Kazdn Harrison, and Dylan McAllister – Junior to Intermediate, and Zaire Jackson and McKensie Smith – Intermediate to Senior. Promotion certificates and monetary gifts were mailed to graduates acknowledging their outstanding achievements in and commitment to Church School participation. The lesson, “The Value of Wisdom” (Proverbs 2: 1- 11), was reviewed by Dr. Genyne Boston, member of the Warren Gaymon/James Browdy Church School Class. Emphasizing that wisdom is more valuable than intelligence, Dr. Boston urged listeners to continue to “indulge in the Word of God,” that the Bible is the road map to successful living. Speaking specifically to graduates and other students, she urged them to continue to “participate in Church School which provides constant wisdom and feeds us spiritually so that we will not be anxious about the current, uncertain circumstances of the world.” In addition to Church School membership, Dr. Boston serves on Stewardess Board #2, the Black History Committee, and assists with the Young People’s Division (YPD).

During the pandemic, students and teachers continued to receive Church School quarterlies. They were also provided information on how to access materials electronically from the AMEC Publishing House website.

The A+ team of highly qualified, spiritual teachers remained outstanding. They adjusted and found creative ways to connect with their students. Bethel is extremely grateful to Superintendent Debra Austin, Assistant Superintendent Aundra Bryant, Secretary Warren Gayman, and Pianist Moriah Treadwell, for their exemplary leadership of the Bethel Church School and to the caring, dedicated Church School teachers.

hurch School Superintendent Dr. Debra Austin provided an outstanding presentation of the lesson for the AMEC Sunday School Union Virtual Church School on Sunday, August 23, the lesson title was “Taming the Tongue,” based on James 3: 1-12, that talks about the life-altering power of words and the believer’s responsibility to use them wisely. With the usual enthusiasm that we have come to expect from her, Superintendent Austin provided a carefully prepared, insightful exploration of James’ message. Her

interactive approach allowed participants to express their views and suggest reasons that sometime make it difficult to control what we say to others. She stressed, a ‘lying tongue’ is one of the seven things that are detestable to God and that everyone will be accountable for their words at judgement. She also emphasized that the tongue cannot be controlled on our own, but only through consistent prayer, a clean heart, and the power of the Holy Spirit.

Bethel is proud of Superintendent Austin and applauds her on being one of the anointed teachers invited to provide instruction via the AMEC Sunday School Union Church School at Home Zoom Platform. Over 400 persons joined Superintendent Austin’s class on August 23 – the largest number of participants up to that time.

Prior to the Coronavirus pandemic, opportunities to enhance the spiritual development of parishioners were provided through the revised and enhanced Sunday bulletin. In addition to the order of service and church announcements, it included: From the Pastor’s Heart, lessons from Dr. McAllister that encourage members to examine and live their lives in the light of biblical principles; Stewardship Education commentaries on the biblical principle of tithing and reasons and rewards for the faithful giving back of God’s gifts; the Apostles’ Creed or Affirmation of Faith that teaches and reminds us of what Christians believe about God, Jesus Christ, and the Universal Church; and the Bethel Church Mission Statement that calls to mind why we exist as a local church and what we have committed ourselves to do to carry out God’s purposes. These additions edified us spiritually and helped to equip us for service.

During the Corvid-19 pandemic, biblical knowledge and spiritual growth were encouraged and enhanced by the Daily Devotional, produced by Dr. McAllister and delivered to the congregation each morning via Constant Contact and Facebook. The devotionals examined selected Bible passages, motivated spiritual reflection, and provided application for daily living. A link to a recording on YouTube expressing the biblical message was a welcoming feature. For instance, the song that accompanied the devotional lesson based on Psalm 121, in which the writer proclaims God’s unremitting protection and care, was “My Help Cometh From the Lord,” beautifully performed by the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir.

Christian Education Sister Margaree Elkins was the delegate to the Tallahassee District Conference called by Presiding Elder Carlton Taylor on January 23-25 at Flipper Chapel AME Church, pastored by the Reverend Willie Merrick. The theme was “Staying True to Our Faith in God.” Bethel Church School Superintendent Dr. Debra Austin conducted the Leadership Workshop.

New Members Class provided instruction in the history and doctrine of Methodist/Western doctrine, African Methodism, and the history and ministry of Bethel. We praise God for the increase of fifty-three members during the conference year, three of whom (Dr. William Hill, Evelyn English, and Opal McKinney-Williams) joined after the suspension of in-person worship.

Congratulations to Bethel’s dynamic YPDers and to their stellar leadership!

The Young People’s Division (YPD) played an integral role in the life of Bethel. In addition to singing in choirs, ushering, and attending Church School, they were provided with opportunities to cultivate their spiritual and creative gifts on Youth Sundays by presiding, reading scripture, and offering prayer. On the January 26 Youth Sunday, Brother Warren Bowers preached a powerful sermon entitled “The Ultimate Receiver. College students conducted the service, and the Caleb and Joshua Generation Choirs provided the music.

YPDers attended the 11th Episcopal District 2020 Black Heritage Weekend on the campus of Edward Waters College, Jacksonville, Florida, on February 14-16, 2020. Bethel’s eight participants competed with over 2000 young people from across the 11th Episcopal District in essay, black poetry, black monologue, and Step Team. The joint leadership of CRU and the CMED introduced their partnership, shared how their ministries intersect, and explored how Bethel ministries can partner to carry out the “Great Commission.” CRU shared their experiences witnessing in inner-city communities and gave an overview of their evangelism training sessions. A powerful and heartrending presentation was made by Sister Wendy Strickland, Angel Wingz Family Crisis and Intervention Center, on wide-spread sex trafficking in Tallahassee.

She challenged everyone to learn to recognize the profile and to make referrals when you observe someone who fits the profile. Thanks to Sister Brenda Jarmon for her committed leadership of the Commission on Membership, Evangelism, and Discipleship.

The Care Leaders Council provided in-service training at its Umbrella Brunch held on January 25. The purpose was to provide care leaders with essential information, instruction, methods/procedures, and support/ encouragement needed to carry out their roles and responsibilities more effectively and efficiently in meeting the needs of their class members. The theme was “Umbrella Table Appetizers.” Umbrella – symbolic of the various care leader responsibilities such as knowing their members by sight and by name, keeping in frequent contact, keeping members informed of church matters, listening and attending to members’ concerns, reporting concerns to the pastor and the council, watching over new members, recommending new members for full membership. Appetizers – symbolic of the characteristics of a good care leader, such as love, faithfulness, commitment, and service. Sister Margaree Elkins, Council Chairperson, presented decorative teapots to members who planned the event. Fellowship and a delicious dinner were enjoyed by all. Matthew Tucker Annual Christmas Program The Church School presented its annual Christmas Program on December 15. The theme was “Go Tell it on the Mountain.” The program consisted of recitations, piano and violin selections, and a dramatic presentation. Under the choral direction of Sister Sharon Ofuani and Brother Jamarien Moore, the Caleb Generation Choir added tremendously to the holiday spirit, and the Liturgical Dancers, under the direction of Sister Barbara McGriff, performed beautifully. Thanks to the generosity of Bethelites, refreshments and treat bags were provided, and students were given the customary monetary Christmas gift. A highlight of the program was a special tribute to Sister Mary Abner, a long-time, cherished Church School teacher. Many Thanks to the Christmas Program coordinators – Sisters Angelina McCoy, Marie Riou, and Venita Treadwell.

Continuing its mission to provide the Bethel Congregation with opportunities to enhance their knowledge and understanding of African American history and culture and contributions to the growth and development to America and the world, the Bethel Black History Committee, (BBHC) in collaboration with the Bethel Church School, Commission on Health, Young Peoples Department, and Social Action Committee, provided a full and diverse range of programs and events. A two-day Florida Black Heritage Trail Tour (January 31-

Christian Education February 1) provided members the opportunity to visit sites significant to the struggles of people of color. Over fifty (50) Bethelites toured portions of northeast and central Florida to include the towns and cities of Greenville, Jacksonville, St. Augustine, Eatonville, Orlando, Ocoee, Okahumpka, and Ocala.

Kingsley Plantation - Jacksonville, FL Highlights included: Kingsley Plantation, Ritz Theater and Museum, Lincolnville, Old Slave Mart, ZORA Festival, Evelyn’s Creation, Virgil Hawkins Memorial and Marion County Black History Museum.

Embracing the 2020 Black History Month national theme, “ African Americans and the Vote,” established by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), the BBHC published information in the church bulletin on the African American Struggle to acquire the right to vote during the 19th and 20th centuries. It also distributed handouts on how to prepare for the 2020 primary and general elections.

In partnership with the Church School, the BBHC invited Leon County Supervisor of Elections, Mark Early, to participate in the Honorable Robert Meacham Lecture Series on February 9. He shared information on the 2020 primary and general elections regarding voter registration, early primary voting, deadlines for registering to vote, mail-in ballots, felon voting laws, and other data.

The Meacham Lecture Series also featured Bethel’s own Dr. Kyle Harris, member of the Board of Stewards and assistant professor of history at Florida A&M University, who provided an outstanding presentation on “African Americans and the Vote: American Reconstruction.” To further emphasize the importance of voting, members were asked to display their Voter Information Card to make them eligible for a drawing. Winners were awarded prizes such as gift cards, flash drives, water bottles, mugs, and backpacks.

Throughout the year members were encouraged to request a Vote-by-Mail Ballot and to plan other voting options.

Buffalo Soldiers with Sister Dorothy Bethea

T

he BBHC program included a special visit by the Tallahassee Chapter of the National Association of Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club, comprised of men and women dedicated to the sport of motorcycling. A nonprofit organization, the group is a stalwart supporter of schools, youth organizations, and other charitable programs and activities. The club rides under the moniker Buffalo Soldiers to acknowledge and call attention to the proud legacy and unique place in history of two calvary and four infantry regiments of black soldiers who fought in wars to expand and protect the nation’s westward expansion after the Civil War. The name was synonymous with all black servicemen until the last all black units were disbanded in 1951. The Tallahassee Chapter of Buffalo Soldiers includes four members of Bethel: Rodney and Dorothy Allen, Mamie Jones, and Dorothy Bethea. Edwin Bethea (deceased) was a charter member of the Tallahassee Chapter organized in 2005.

The BBHC Art Show and Writer’s Exhibition showcased the artistic and literary talents of over 20 Bethel members and guests through paintings, photography, quilts, baskets, private collections, and book signings.

Family Trivia & Games and Movie Night @BETHEL provided members a fun-filled evening of friendly competition and teamwork challenging our knowledge of African American history and culture. The night culminated with the showing of the award-winning movie “Harriett” which chronicled the life of Harriett Tubman and her work with the Underground Railroad. The Taste of the African Diaspora provided a

sampling and tasting of African, Caribbean, and

American southern dishes prepared and served by 15 Bethel chefs with over 200 persons partaking of the delicious offerings. The Bethel Children’s Fashion Show, produced and coordinated with the Young Peoples Department (YPD), featured Bethel children modeling native African attire and black solidarity clothing. The Black History newsletter, poster displays, and information table provided members information on the relevance and importance of the national theme “African Americans and the Vote.” Special emphasis was placed on the works and impact of Fannie Lou Hamer, Shirley Chisholm, Barack Obama, and Tallahassee/Leon County African American local elected officials.

With the onset of the Coronavirus, the BBHC continued to meet by conference call to plan post pandemic activities upon return to church, including emphasis on voting, and developing activities to highlight the 2021 national theme, “Black Families: Representation, Identity and Diversity,” and reviewing possible Black History tour options in Georgia and South Carolina.

Bethel is grateful to the Black History Committee for its impassioned work in carrying out its mission. Matthew 25: 40 The Doctrine and Discipline of the African Methodist Episcopal Church states that “in every local church, the AME Church shall engage in carrying out the spirit of the original Free African Society, out of which the AME Church evolved: that is, to seek out and save the lost and to serve the needy.” Bethel is indeed grateful to God for the numerous and diverse opportunities placed before us to serve Him as we pursue the AME Church vision.

The Bethel television broadcast, BeTheLite, aired each Sunday at 10:30 a.m. on WTXL TV, Channel 27, allowing thousands of persons in North Florida and South Georgia to hear the living, transformational Word of God proclaimed.

The Bethel Community Development Corporation (CDC) continued to provide much needed affordable

housing for underserved residents in the Tallahassee southside communities.

It was awarded $103,000 from the City of Tallahassee (COT) to build a new home for a 74 year old Tallahassee man whose house suffered major damage from hurricane Michael. The new home features 962 square feet of living space which includes a living/ dining/kitchen area (equipped with refrigerator and stove), two bedrooms, one full handicap accessible bathroom, and a laundry room, equipped with washer and dryer – gifts from Bethel. It also includes two handicap accessible ramps, and two porches totaling 67 square feet. Commenting on this ministry opportunity, Dr. McAllister noted “that extending the olive branch of love to God’s people shows that His presence prevails in our lives and He uses the household of faith to turn a dream into a reality.”

resently, the CDC is renovating two homes at no cost to the residents, and is providing affordable, quality rental property for low income families, as well. Four homes were rehabilitated during the fiscal year. Plans to sponsor the 2020 Affordable Housing Symposium in which persons are exposed to fair and affordable housing opportunities, first time home buyer programs, credit repair, and a host of other affordable housing opportunities, were suspended due to COVID – 19 with plans to reschedule.

The CDC is funded through the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the City of Tallahassee (COT), and was recently reaccredited by the COT. The Reverend Dr. Julius H. McAllister, Jr. and the Reverend Herbert Corbin, Jr., serve as Chairman of the Board, and Director of the CDC, respectively.

A Life Recovery Center (ALRC)

The A Life Recovery Center (ALRC), a drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility, continued to provide life enhancing treatment for marginalized abusers in the Big Bend counties of North Florida. During the last twelve months the ALRC served one hundred and fifty (150) clients. This number included thirty-three (33) residential treatment clients, four (4) outpatient clients, and one hundred and thirteen (113) Drug Court treatment clients. Sixty-nine

everal Bethel ministries adopted the ALRC as their outreach project and they, along with individual members of the congregation, provided essentials such as gloves, hand sanitizer, personal hygiene items and other vital supplies. Realizing the positive impact of a safe, comfortable living environment environment on the self-esteem and motivation of residential clients in search of a successful transition back to the community, Dr. McAllister, Chairman of the Board of Directors, initiated an extensive makeover of the physical facilities. Restorations and repairs included the following: the replacement of the roof, carpet in the administration building, and light fixtures in the administration and residential buildings. The ceiling tile, table, chairs, sofas, blinds, curtains, toilet, and shower fixtures were replaced. Interior and exterior floors were either painted or pressure washed. Also, new computers and other office equipment were purchased. Thanks to Dr. McAllister, the Reverend James Houston, Director of the ALRC, the outstanding ALRC staff and volunteers, and the great people of Bethel for their outstanding commitment to providing a path for substance abuse victims to overcome their addictions and re-enter society with self-confidence and hope for successful living.

hrough its annual Thanksgiving Basket Program (November 8-9), Bethel continued to put the church theme, “Called to Make a Different,” into practice. Under the leadership of the Church School, 350 baskets, filled with turkey and ingredients to provide a full thanksgiving meal for 2,800 people, were distributed. This number included baskets for Bethel’s sick and shut-in members, personally delivered by members of the Board of Stewards. Over 150 volunteers, including Bethelites and college students, played an invaluable role in the success of this effort! Volunteers expressed their pleasure for the opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of others. Jaelore Faison, a sophomore psychology major at Florida A&M University, described her experience as follows: Today, I had the honor of assisting Bethel AME Church of Tallahassee, in their annual Thanksgiving Drive. The early morning (We got up at 4:00 a.m.) was full of laughs, love, and of course some muscle work from very genuine individuals that obviously have a desire to help! I’m thrilled that my brilliant African American History professor, Dr. Kyle Harris, decided to share this event with the class and allowed us to experience this incredible opportunity. Seeing people in the community smiling ear to ear because they knew for sure their family would have a meal for Thanksgiving honestly brought me to tears a couple of times throughout the morning but also allowed me to take a moment to appreciate what I have. I can’t wait until next year. The theme of this year’s community outreach effort was “Bethelites Caring and Sharing: Love Makes the Difference.”

The Families Reaching Families Christmas Gift Program, under the leadership of the Daughters of Sarah Allen, provided gifts to 51 families (173 persons) in need. Families were recommended by local social services agencies and Bethel members. We are grateful to the Daughters of Sarah Allen for planning and facilitating this annual ministry experience cochaired by Sisters Barbara Kelly and Eartha Lamar.

Prior to the onset of the Coronavirus, the Elkins/ Williams Women’s Missionary Society, under the presidency of Sister Sylvia Petties, prepared and served approximately 200 hot lunches to the homeless each month at the Kearney Homeless Shelter.

The Bethel Mentor/Volunteer Ministry mentored/ volunteered a total of seventy (70) hours and fifteen (15) minutes in the public schools of Leon County during the 2019-2020 school year. However, the work of this outreach ministry was cut short on March 23 when schools were closed due to the Coronavirus.

Thanks to Brother William Lamar and members of the Mentor/Volunteer Ministry for letting their lights and talents shine by motivating and providing incentives for our young people to improve themselves academically and personally.

he Black History Committee represented Bethel as one of thirty (30) partners on the Steering Committee of the Tallahassee Community Remembrance Project that “seeks to remember and acknowledge past and present racial violence and injustice in Tallahassee, Leon County, Florida, and to inspire the community to come together for dialogue, education, understanding, action and ultimately, for healing and trust.” Working with the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) in Montgomery, Alabama, the Community Remembrance Project gained approval of a Historical Marker that will recognize the four known officially recorded victims of lynching in Leon County between 1897 and 1937 – Mike Morris, Pierce Taylor, Ernest Ponder, and Richard Hawkins. On February 28, a Soil Collection Ceremony was held at the site of the old Leon County Jail with local elected officials, EJI representatives, and over two hundred citizens in attendance, including BBHC members and the Reverend Dr. Eric Little, Bethel Associate Minister, who provided the prayer and blessing of the soil. Soil collected at the site will be displayed at the National Memorial for

Peace and Justice in Montgomery. On July 8, the Tallahassee City Council approved the request for the monument and narrative marker that will be located at the site of the Old Leon County Jail on the corner of East Gaines and Meridian Streets.

Members of the Black History Committee also joined the Community Remembrance Project, My 54 Walk, in recognition of civil rights icons John Lewis and C. T. Vivian. The goal was to walk at least fifty-four miles, the distance of the 1965 march from Selma to Montgomery, AL. Together, the group of twenty-eight multigenerational walkers covered 81.5 miles. Black History Committee walkers included Brother Kenneth Austin and Sister Mamie Jones. Sister Mara Ford-Jones represented the Commission on Health.

The 14th Annual Day of Dialogue on Minority Health (DoDMH) was hosted by Bethel AME Commission on Health, Saturday, February 22, 2020.

Sister Marva Ford-Jones, Commission Chair, welcomed more than 150 individuals and vendors to the event. The theme was “ Circle of Abundant Life: Health at Every Stage.” The goals of the program were to identify chronic health conditions and diseases affecting African Americans in Leon County, provide information on available community agencies/resources in the county that address these conditions, and share successful strategies utilized in churches to improve the health status of congregations and the community. On-site health screenings were conducted, and vendors were available to showcase

Community Outreach community resources and services. General sessions included an overview of health status in Leon County, explanation of the Five Wishes Document, and how mental health, diabetes, and heart are linked to nutrition management. The Pastor’s Roundtable “Strengthening Church Based Health: Initiating, Developing, and Achieving Results,” was moderated by the Reverend Dr. Frank McDonald, Pastor, Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church. Panelists discussed successful strategies used in their respective congregations to encourage members to pursue healthy lifestyles as a priority.

Dr. McAllister offered a testimonial on how his family’s adoption of healthy eating habits positively affected their overall quality of life. The program closed with a “Charge to Health Ministries” by Dr. Barbara Thomas-Reddick.

In response to Dr. McAllister’s request for “a few good men “to help inspire and connect with a group of local middle school male students, over thirty men of Bethel joined him on October 15, at the 2nd Gentleman’s Tie Day held by Nims Middle School. Along with other church leaders and school and city government officials, the Bethel men provided ties for male students and taught them how to tie them. Organizers suggest that wearing ties enhance self-image and good deportment among young boys. Among the individuals who spoke to the students about preparation and success were Mayor John Daily, School Superintendent Rocky Hanna, and School Board member Darryl Jones.

Reverend Julius thanked Bethel participants for their act of love, and advised that “there is more work to be done.”

The D0DMH includes churches from eight counties in north Florida. Bethel members of the Steering Committee include: Dr. Fred Seaman, Chairperson; Dr. Penny Ralston, Founder; Dr. Elsie Crowell, Cofounder and Treasurer, and Dr. Jackie Robinson, Evaluator.

Dark clouds, fierce wind, and a torrential downpour did not prevent the YPD and other ministries from holding the 3rd Annual Hallelujah Night – Trunk or Treat on October 30th. After the stormy weather subsided, approximately 200 children and adults from Bethel and the community gathered to enjoy

Community Outreach Through its Newborn Babies Project, the Daughters of Sarah Allen donated clothes, blankets, and other baby essentials to mothers in need at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. The ministry’s Mentoring Program involved a variety of activities for members and mentees. They included a bowling outing at Capital Lanes, the viewing of “Mary Poppins” at the Young Adult Theatre and the viewing of “Frozen” at the AMC Theatre. Also, in March, Women’s History Month, Sister Carolyn Elkins gave a presentation on the historical contributions of women.

Trunk or Treat—Decoration Ministry fun, food, and fellowship on Halloween Night. Once again, this event was used as an evangelism tool. Organizations chose themes such as “Jesus, the Light of the World” and “Soap Can Cleanse the Body, but only Jesus can Wash Away our Sins,” in decorating their cars, and distributed bookmarks, stick-on tattoos, and religious cartoons. Many thanks to First Lady Deana McAllister and Sister Marie Riou for providing the leadership for this ministry experience, and to the many Bethel ministries and organizations for their enthusiastic support and participation.

Stewardess Board #2, in conjunction with the City of Tallahassee and the Smith Williams Service Center, donated clothing and household items to needy families in the community. Stewardess Board #2 is under the dedicated leadership of Sisters Wanda Ford and Tracy Mathis.

With the assistance of church members, Stewardess Board #4, under the leadership of Sister Florida Dobson, donated over 300 pairs of socks to the Tallahassee Homeless Shelter. Also, in partnership with the Elkins/Williams Missionary Society, the board contributed 6,114 diapers and 2,396 baby wipes to Brehon Family Services. The board was joined in their diaper donation project by Sam’s Club of Tallahassee, which donated 3,588 diapers from its inventory. Special thanks to Ms. Una Waters of Sam’s Club who made the donation possible. Additionally, members attended and contributed a $75.00 offering to the Mount Pisgah Stewardess Board Program.

Usher Board # 1 continued to make a difference in the lives of those in need through their Miracle Hill, American Second Harvest of the Big Bend, and Little League Baseball programs. Christmas gifts were provided to residents of Miracle Hill Nursing Home, and monetary gifts were given to the American Second Harvest of the Big Bend and the Capital City Little League Baseball Team. A

t a time when there are widespread efforts in the nation to legally employ regressive laws and reforms to suppress the right of minority citizens to register and vote, Bethel addressed the issue of preserving and protecting the franchise – a basic American principle.

Bethel’s legacy of providing a safe haven of political gatherings for Tallahassee’s black residents dates back to the Era of Reconstruction. Therefore, it was predictable that for the second year, Bethel opened its doors to the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, an advocacy group that works to improve the lives of people negatively impacted by the criminal justice system. The coalition assembled at Bethel on February 18 ahead of its annual rally at the Florida State Capitol.

Nearly 600 men and women from across the state met to pray, to strategize, and to have lunch before rallying at the capitol. The group, led by Desmond Meade, presented Governor Ron DeSantis and the Clemency

Board with a clemency reform proposal to speed up the rights restoration process for former inmates. The theme for Advocacy Day was “Our Vote, Our Voice, Our Time.” We thank God for allowing Bethel to provide a safe place of assembly for groups that advocate for social and political justice and equality.

The Black History Committee joined with the Bethel Commission on Christian Social Action to encourage Bethel members and the community to vote, and arm them with essential information needed to exercise the vote during one of the most consequential election cycles in American history. Members braved 90 plus degree tempeatures on July 30-31 and August 1 (before the period of early voting) to provide persons with printed details on matters such as election dates, the three ways to register, the three ways to vote, verification of individual voter information and polling places, types of valid ID to present at the polls, Provisional Ballot status, steps to follow at the polling place, and how to customize a voting session (enlarge font size, audio ballot, etc.). Information published by the Association for the Study of African American History, on the black struggle to acquire voting rights, was distributed as well as a list of African American elected officials (local, state, and national) serving Leon County. The Bethel family is indebted to the Black History Committee and the Commission on Christian Social Action for continuing Bethel’s long and distinguished history of fighting for and safeguarding voting rights for all eligible citizens.

Covid – 19 and suspension of in-service worship, ministers began to distribute consecrated pre-filled communion cups to parishioners at the rear of the sanctuary on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday before first Sundays. Thus, worshippers were able to participate in Holy Communion during worship calls. Also, visits to sick and shut-in were replaced with prayer calls.

Dr. McAllister, assisted by associate ministers, stewards and stewardesses, provided Holy Communion to the sick and shut-in on first Sundays, and conducted hospital and nursing home visits to

ne of the most essential elements of pastoral care is support for persons experiencing the loss of a relative or friend. We are grateful to Dr. McAllister for helping loved ones of our deceased members through their grief journeys – attending to their needs and emotions with guidance and compassionate care. Corvid-19 prevented full-service funerals in the sanctuary; however, Dr. McAllister’s graveside eulogies declared the value and meaning of the life of each deceased member; and through the proclamation of the Word of Jesus Christ, he helped bereaved families and friends move forward with hope, faith and joy. We acknowledge, with grateful appreciation, Steward Board ProTems Mary Smith

and Darryl Jones who assisted Reverend Julius at graveside funerals; and we thank members who attended to provide comfort and encouragement to the mourning.

During the Corvid-D pandemic, Dr. McAllister held the Bethel family in relentless prayer while continuing to provide encouragement, and guidance to meet the challenges we faced. He maintained frequent communication with members through conference calls, Constant Contact, Social Media, and the US mail. Post Cards reminding members to pick up communion elements, informing them of current and forthcoming ministry experiences, and other church matters were sent frequently. Moreover, he met, via conference call, with each church ministry, board, and choir to inquire about their well-being, providing information, listening to members’ concerns, and offering prayer. Bethel is grateful to Dr. McAllister for using these approaches to preserve unity of spirit and agreement among us, and for addressing our spiritual and emotional needs. Likewise, we thank chairpersons and members of boards and ministries for remaining connected and checking on the well-being of one another through personal calls, greeting cards, conference calls, email and text, and for responding to the needs of members who were ill or bereaved.

On November 3, 2019, the Bethel family honored Dr. McAllister and the first family on the Eleventh Anniversary of their call to Bethel. Special worship services were highlighted by the fervent proclamation of the Word of God at the 7: 45 a.m., service by the Reverend Cecil Williams, Pastor of Gregg Chapel AME Church in Ft. Walton, FL and at the 11:00 a.m. service by Associate Minister Reverend Dr. Ronald Glenn.

A formal dinner was served. The theme for the celebration was “Celebrating the Shepherd’s Journey,” based on Jeremiah 3: 15. Many thanks to the Board of Stewards for providing leadership for the celebration and to the Young People’s Division for assisting in setting-up the fellowship hall and serving dinner.

ongratulations to First Lady Deana Young McAllister, who was appointed Leon County School Board Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources, Labor and Employee Relation, and Chief Negotiator. She brings to this position twenty-seven years of outstanding service in the education profession where she worked as a teacher, curriculum specialist, recruiter, and administer. A graduate of Agnes Scott College in Decatur, GA, Mrs. McAllister earned a baccalaureate degree in political science and was certified to teach at the middle school level. She received the Master of Educational Leadership and Administration degree from National Louis University in Chicago, IL. Her academic preparation, her genuine love for young people, and her profound dedication to the education profession account for her success in teaching students of different races, ethnicity, socio-economic status, and academic levels at intercity schools from Atlanta GA and Detroit MI to schools located in the wealthy suburbs of Chicago.

Mrs. McAllister came to Tallahassee with a wealth of experience in the area of educational administration. In Naperville, IL, she was one of only three African American administrators in School District 203. She served as Curriculum and Testing Coordinator and was appointed Senior Director of Human Services. In Tallahassee, prior to her appointment as assistant superintendent, Mrs. McAllister was a high school assistant principal and served as Director of Labor and Employee Relations, Chief Negotiator and Equity Officer for Personnel in the Leon County School District.

We not only acknowledge Mrs. McAllister as a distinguished educator, we also bear witness to her work, commitment, and love for God as First Lady of the Bethel AME Church. When God called Dr. McAllister to lead Bethel, He also called Mrs. McAllister to be a pillow of support beneath that leadership, to surround him with love and encouragement, and to partner with him and the Bethel family to do God’s work. We thank Mrs. McAllister for the many ways she works hand in hand with Dr. McAllister to promote the vision God has given him for the people of Bethel. And we are exceedingly grateful to God for how she enthusiastically contributes her own unique gifts to build the body of Christ – for her commitment to the spiritual, educational, and social enhancement of our youth through her dedicated work with the Young People’s Division (YPD), and for the love and compassion for others she exhibits by her works of mission and outreach with the Women’s Missionary Society. We also praise God for her steadfast example of a nurturing mother evidenced in the kind, lovable attributes of her three sons – Julius III, Colin, and Dylan.

We salute First Lady McAllister not only for what she does but for who she is – a women of God, a women of great compassion, courage, and strength. Her behavior reflects her true nature. She is humble, unpretentious, and approachable. Her genuine expressions of love for God, for her family, and for the Bethel family encourage and energize us as we travel this faith journey together.

Bethel is grateful for our God-called, Spirit-led first lady, Mrs. Deana Young McAllister. We thank her for making a difference in our lives, and pray that God will continue to let her light shine brightly.

he Church School provided movie gift cards to CS students who attended CS at least twice a month, who made the honor roll/dean’s list, or who demonstrated one letter grade improvement from one grading period to the next. Special thanks to Brother Zachary Ansley for his superb coordination of this program.

Through the Card Ministry of Bible Class III’s Sister Rosalind Parlor, the Church School extended hospitality, beyond that provided through individual classes, by sending greetings cards on special occasions to church members.

The YPD held several meetings and workshops during the year. Members and leaders also fellowshipped together at a Spaghetti Dinner, Ice cream Social, and Christmas Dinner.

The Adult Senior Ministry continued to focus on its mission to provide social, educational, and spiritual activities for members. The ministry hosted an AARP Cyber Security/ Medicare 2019 Updates Workshop.

Over forty members and guests attended. It also held its annual Christmas Luncheon Program at Longhorn Steakhouse. Thanks to Sister LaJoycea Condry for her outstanding leadership of the Senior Adult Ministry Stewardess Board #1 held its annual Christmas Social at the Wilderness Cabin. A gift of appreciation was presented to each member present. Thanks to Sister Hilda Jackson for her committed leadership of Stewardess Board #1.

Stewardess Board #4 held a Social Sisterly Spring Luncheon on March 14. Sister Olivia Jones’ presentation, “Sisters Working Together in Harmony,” emphasized the benefits and joy of working together to do God’s work. Sister Margaree Elkins, member of the Board of Stewards, gave an overview of the role of the stewardess and encouraged members to do good work for the church.

Members of the congregation accompanied Dr. McAllister to Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church where he was one of the speakers at Tabernacle’s Annual Days of Praise Conference – Hour of Power. He blessed the attendees with a powerful sermon, “ No Matter How Bad it Gets, Always Sing Your Song,” taken from Psalm 98:1a. The Male Chorus provided beautiful music and Bethel’s Usher Auxiliaries served.

Bethel was featured in the Tallahassee Magazine Historic Churches Series. In his article, “The Benevolent Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church,” author, Peter Reinwald, documented Bethel’s more than 154year history. Reinwald described Bethel’s legacy of being a place where persons from all walks of life can be spiritually nourished by the preaching and teaching of the gospel message of Jesus Christ, and highlighted the church’s perpetual status as a focal point of social justice, community and civic engagement, and political and economic empowerment. The article appeared in the magazine’s December 31, 2019 edition.

Drive-by Birthday Parade for Sister Johnnie Belle Taylor

M

embers recognized and celebrated the centennial birthday of two pillars of Bethel – Sister Thelma Lawrence and Sister Mary Abner. Sister Lawrence was chairperson of the Hospitality Ministry for more than thirty years. She was a long-serving president of Stewardess Board #3, and a generous, relentless contributor to the YPD. Sister Abner was known for her love of young people. She was a longtime, cherished teacher of the Church School Junior Class, and a dedicated member of Choir #2. On December 2019, the Church School presented a special tribute to Sister Abner for her many years of dedication and service. Sister Abner went Home to be with the Lord on July 25, 2020.

Covid-19 did not prevent the Bethel family from recognizing the birthday of one of its nonagenarian members, Sister Johnnie Belle Taylor, who celebrated her 96th birthday on August 19. Members honored Sister Taylor with a Drive-by Birthday Parade. In a line of twenty-four cars, led by Dr. McAllister, participants drove pass Mrs. Taylor’s home on Galimore Drive. Cars were decorated with Happy Birthday signs and balloons. Participants honked their horns, waved, placed gifts and flowers on a decorated table, and blew kisses to Mrs. Taylor who sat outside. She was presented with an album of photographs that pictured her at various Bethel occasions, and she later received a video tape recording of the parade. Sister Taylor stated that this was not the first time her Bethel brothers and sisters showed love and care for her. She humbly expressed that “They send greeting cards, visited often before Corvid-19, and call to ask what they can do for me all of the time. I am so thankful for my pastor and Bethel; and I thank God for the undeserved blessings He provided today.” Bethel is grateful to the men and women who conceived of, planned, enlisted participants, and coordinated this beautiful event to recognize an extraordinary woman of God. Without a doubt, these “Friends of Sister Taylor” exemplify the message to believers expressed in Hebrews 10:2, “Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good deeds.”

Tucker Civic Center.

inistry Sunday was held December 29, 2019. The purpose was to acknowledge and show appreciation to all of the organizations that carry out the church’s mission. The name of each organization (ministry, board, commission) was called and members were asked to stand and be recognized.

The Bethel Commission on Health (COH) continued its mission to provide education that promotes healthy behaviors and lifestyles. The COH distributed articles on health awareness written by Bethel professional healthcare providers, prepared healthy nutritious alternative breakfasts, conducted in-house health programs that offered screenings, readings, and monitoring, and collaborated and participated with other ministry programs throughout the year. In October, Cancer Awareness Month, Dr. Linda Waldon provided written information on breast, colon, prostate, and pancreatic cancers; and the COH hosted a reception honoring cancer survivors. During the month of November, American Diabetes Awareness Month, Drs. Otis Kirksey and Emmanuel Inwang provided oral and written articles on Mellitus Diabetes. And throughout the month of January, they served as co-chairs for Bethel’s Lifestyle Management (Diabetes) Initiative that included presentations during church services, publications in the church bulletin and on the church email system (Constant Contact), and the administration of the ADA Type 2 Diabetes Risk Test. Other articles written by Bethel health professionals and shared with members included: “Tips for Healthy Eating,” by Dr. Cynthia Seaborn-Jenkins; “Staying Well During Flu Season,” by Dr. Arlesia Mathis; "Preventing the Spread of Coronavirus,” by Dr. Linda Walden; "Cardiovascular Disease – Heart Health," by Dr. Chris Daniels; "Metabolic (Diabetes) Syndrome,” by Dr. Emmanuel Inwang, and "Understanding Diabetes," by Dr. Otis Kirksey. Many thanks to the Health Commission under the leadership of Sister Marva Ford Jones.

Under the leadership of Brother Edward Moragne, a Veteran’s Organization was created. Brother Edwin Norwood and Mrs. Lionel Thompson were selected president and vice president, respectively.

ethel welcomed the Reverend Edith Holiday Austin to the ministerial staff. Reverend Austin pastored thirty years in the Florida Annual Conference. Among her charges were St. Luke AME in Malone, St. Mark AME in Campbelltown, and Mt. Olive AME in Marianna. Before her call to ministry, Reverend Austin was an associate member of Bethel during the tenure of its 32nd pastor, the Reverend Ira Hinson. She served faithfully along with her late husband, Brother Freeman Holiday, a leading soloist in the music ministry. We are delighted that Reverend Austin has come back home, and look forward to her continued leadership and our work together to build God’s kingdom here on earth. Reverend Austin is the mother of Bethel members Brother and Sister Willie and Delores Hudson.

Congratulations to the Reverend David Williams, who retired from the active ministry of the African Methodist Episcopal Church after twenty-six years. His retirement took place during the Ceremony of Appreciation for Superannuating Preachers at the One Hundred Fifty-Fifth Session of the Florida Annual Conference on September 4, 2020. In 1994, while he was a member of Bethel, Reverend Williams answered the call to ministry during the pastorate of the

Reverend Adam J. Richardson, current Prelate of the Eleventh Episcopal District of the AME Church. Reverend Williams served the Lord with gladness for six years at Springfield AME Church and eighteen years at Philadelphia AME Church, where he led the congregation in burning the mortgage.

While he pastored these churches, Reverend Williams was also a member of the ministerial staff at Bethel. Over the years, he has given loyal, compassionate service – preaching, teaching, administering Holy Communion to sick and shut-in parishioners, and performing other church functions with an extraordinarily humble and joyful spirit. We praise God for Reverend Williams’ faithful service to God and to the AME Church, and are grateful for the spiritual guidance and godly example he will continue to provide as a member of the Bethel Ministerial Staff.

2 Corinthians 5: 1 The prohibition of in-person gatherings during the Coronavirus pandemic prevented the Bethel family from assembling in the sanctuary to memorialize, in the way we are accustomed, our brothers and sisters who went hope to be with the Lord. We honor the members who passed into eternal rest between March 17 and September 2, 2020 (the end of the 2019-2020 Conference Year). Each of them was unique and served the Lord, their families, and Bethel Church in their own special way.

We Praise God for them! We affirm that their lives were well-lived! We remember them with gladness and thanksgiving in our hearts!

Sister Sarah Lawrence Simmons – Age 96 – April 8, 2020 A Jefferson County native and longtime resident of Tallahassee, Sister Sarah Simmons was the mother of Deannah Baker, Samuel and Clyde Lawrence, Carolyn Simmons, and Dr. Synthia Turner. This phenomenal Christian soldier courageously fought a good fight of faith. She fearlessly expressed her love and joy in the Lord through diligent service and worship as a staunch member of St. Phillip AME Church, Monticello, FL for over 80 years and as an affiliated member of Bethel Tallahassee for 50+ years. Active and well known on the local, district, and Episcopal Connection, Sister Simmons made an indelible mark on the Lay Organization, Daughters of Sarah Allen, Women’s Missionary Society, Stewardess ministry, and Debutante Master Commission. Numerous civic organizations benefitted from her bold, selfless volunteerism, and demonstration of love, giving, and friendship with a reservoir of endless energy and the innate desire to serve mankind. Graveside service was held at St. Phillip AME Church Cemetery, Monticello, FL on April 8, 2020.

Sister Lillie Gardner – Age 76 – April 19, 2020 Sister Lillie Gardner, a native of Gainesville, FL, blessed Bethel Church and her daughters, LaTonya Taylor Stephens and Dr. Tiffany Gardner, with a quiet, kind, gentle, soft-spoken, and caring presence. Her cooperative, Christlike spirit, pleasant nature, and ready smile made her membership with and service to the Bethel Church family special. She loved to praise the Lord at the 7:45 a.m. service. Brother James “Billy” Oliver, Jr. – Age 95 – April 21, 2020 Brother James “Billy” Oliver, Jr., a gentle giant, walked faithfully as a member at old Bethel on West Virginia Street through the transition to the new Bethel on West Orange Avenue. His membership of 70+ years included service on the Board of Stewards, the former Bethel Sports Ministry, and strong support of other ministry experiences. His commitment in union to the late Sister Annie Mae Oliver, father of the late Sister Gwendolyn Oliver Parker, grandfather of Eric Parker (Mia) and Matthew Parker epitomized godly character. Graveside service for this honorable veteran of the United States Army was held on April 21, 2020 at Oakland Cemetery, Tallahassee, FL.

Sister Brenda Grice – Age 70 – June 1, 2020 Sister Brenda Grice was known for her sweet spirit and charming demeanor that commanded love and respect. Her zest for Christian living was centered on looking after her family and attending church service. She was a pillar of iron and a tower of strength for her family, and a lifelong, active member of Bethel who made footprints of dedicated, faithful and caring service from West Virginia Street to West Orange Avenue. She was a dutiful member of Stewardess Board #3, in regular attendance until her health declined. This special lady leaves a legacy of love to her family and friends. Dr. Arvid Vincent Mukes – Age 79 – June 12, 2020 A native of Chandler, Oklahoma, Brother Arvid Mukes was a faithful member of Bethel for 34 years. He and his wife, Sister Ora Sullivan Mukes, loved the Lord and raised their children, Dr. Visanio Elarryo Mukes (Lauren) and Jessica Mukes Maywood (Leroy) at Bethel. Brother Mukes served on the Board of Stewards and demonstrated a caring and supportive attitude for programs throughout the church including Church School, YPD, DMC, youth ushers, youth choir, Church School Convention, and CEC. Sister Mary Carol Abner – Age100 – August 6, 2020 Sister Mary Carol Abner was a devout member of Bethel who gave over seventy-five years of leadership and service. She was a dedicated member of Choir #2, a long-time care leader for class #27, the first chairperson of Bethel’s Thanksgiving Basket Program coordinated by the Church School, and a dedicated teacher of the Junior Class. She received the church’s Unsung Hero Award and is included on the Wall of Faith. Sister Abner was the mother of Sister Hodgetta Huckaby and grandmother of Sisters Jamye Brown and Jamells Brown Pruden.
