While the main purpose of accident injury compensation is to recover expenses and losses as a result of an injury it can also be a lesson for negligent individuals and organisations to take more responsibility and improve their behaviour and / or processes in the future. But not everyone learns from their mistakes. Does accident injury compensation help prevent future accidents from occurring?

It’s a big question and one that fits into the same category as ‘Is the world becoming a better place to be?’We could argue on the one hand that there are still wars happening in the world, civil wars even and thousands of people including children are being killed or dying of malnutrition every month for no good reason and have we really learnt anything?

These things indicate doom and gloom in the world and people question and worry what world we are bringing new children into.

On the other hand there is the view that we are learning, growing and improving all the time and the world is becoming a better place as individuals are making more informed decisions. With the Internet, people are learning at a rapid rate. Learning about the world we live in and making conscious choices and more ethical choices. There are more opportunities to find out how we can help and how we can change ourselves and our lifestylesto make our own individual contribution to the mass energy.

Despite injury compensation being paid out by insurance companies accidents are still occurring often at work and on the road. There may be more distractions on the road now with smart phones and people rushing around even faster than ever. There might even be pressure to perform at work causing stress related health issues and more opportunity for accidents. Or have things improved in the workplace with improved working conditions as employers demonstrate a better duty of care? With no real answer to the question we have to decide what we want to believe. Are people caring more about each other, employees and taking more care to prevent accidents? I like to think that this is true and people and in general have learnt to be more considerate, more caring and thoughtfuland more neighbourly in general.

While accidents will always occur as it is unlikely we will be able to rule them out completely, hopefully we will see much less being caused by someone else’s negligence or carelessness.
