About Me

My name is Ian Nielsen-Fox, and I am a second-year Master of Architecture student at the University of Oregon, set to graduate in spring 2025. Originally from Madison, WI, I earned my B.S. in Architecture from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities, where I developed a passion for sustainable, community-focused design.

With five years of professional experience at JDD Studio in Minneapolis, I’ve honed my skills in project management, design development, and construction documentation.

My academic and professional journey has also included studying urban design in Copenhagen and teaching architectural media as a Graduate Employee. Outside of work and study, I enjoy exploring the outdoors through cross-country skiing, camping, and fishing.

PROJECT 1

King’s Grade Vineyard & Winery Masters Program | Studio II | Project Professor - Stephen Duff Completed: Winter 2024

Located southwest of Portland, Oregon, Kings Grade Vineyard & Winery uses a gravity fed process to produce 24,000 gallons of premium pinot noir and chardonnay.

To satisfy the clients’ requirements, the entirety of wine production, from grape processing to bottling occurs onsite, with 20% of cases reserved for further aging.

Perched atop a scenic hill, the winery offers sweeping views of the western landscape. The angled stone façade creates dramatic shadows that evolve throughout the day creating a sense of movement. Guests are given a variety of different ways to experience the winery, including a large event and tasting room, pavilions for private parties, and immersive tours through the state-of-the-art gravity winery. For guests who would like an extended stay there are three cabins situated on the hillside that offer maximum privacy and spectacular views.

Portland Mercado Masters Program | Studio III | Project Professor - Howard Davis Completed: Spring 2024

The Portland Mercado is a cultural hub in Portland providing affordable retail space for Latinx community.

Inspired by entrepreneurship, Latinx heritage, and vibrant public markets worldwide, it aims to address wealth disparities and fulfill the community’s desire for a Latino commerce center. In January 2024, a fire severely damaged the Mercado, leading to plans for a more functional rebuild with added housing. The new design embraces SE Foster Rd, featuring a plaza with food trucks, an expanded market hall, a grocery store, a rentable commercial kitchen, and permanent shops. The residential floors offer six unit types with workspaces to support resident-run businesses.

Residents get priority for market stalls and enjoy an upper plaza with gardens, a playground, and gathering spaces. Equipped with solar panels and a rainwater system, the new Mercado aims to reduce energy costs and water consumption. This development strengthens the Mercado as a community cornerstone, fostering stability and growth for residents and local businesses.

Dwelling Types & Unit Plans The unit types are designed to accommodate the diverse needs of the Latinx community and others who engage with the Portland Mercado. Units A and B feature dedicated workshop spaces located near the main entrance, offering residents the opportunity to operate home-based businesses with easy access for potential clients. Type F units include a flexible space adjacent to the primary circulation area, which can function as an office or business space, or alternatively be converted into an additional bedroom to suit the residents’ needs. The remaining units provide a range of sizes to welcome a variety of households. Every unit includes private outdoor space, ensuring residents have access to their own personal retreat.

Together, these apartments aim to foster entrepreneurship, community connection, and a vibrant living environment.

Architectural Commons: The Glisan Athenaeum Masters Program | Studio I | Project Professor - Stephen Duff Completed: Fall 2023

Architectural Commons - The Portland Athenaeum is a dynamic addition to the downtown area, designed to cultivate community engagement. Anchored by a ground-floor café strategically situated to attract patrons from nearby parks and NW Glisan St, the building promotes interaction through a versatile gallery on the ground level and a tranquil library on the second floor.

Key features include a multi-functional auditorium, a rooftop Oyster Bar with panoramic city views, community wood shops, and the presence of the Portland Design Commission. The outdoor café space extends the community experience. This innovative project seeks to blend culture, design, and relaxation, providing a hub for intellectual exploration, artistic expression, and collaborative creativity in the heart of the city.

Building Program The building’s program is designed to engage with the greenway to the east of the site while also creating a vibrant street life around its perimeter. The ground floor primarily features a café and gallery showcasing the architectural history of the Pacific Northwest. Additional program elements are distributed throughout the building, as outlined below.

Luminaire: Lighting Design Masters Program | Environmental Control Systems II Project Professor - Ihab Elzeyadi | Completed: Spring 2024 Project Collaborators - Reagan Potts & Molly McGuire

This luminaire, inspired by the simplicity and elegance of a flower, offers a timeless lighting solution tailored for the Legal Grounds Cafe on the University of Oregon campus. Featuring a design of overlapping “petals,” it provides focused task lighting for tables and desks, creating an ideal environment for studying, writing, or enjoying a coffee, while also delivering ambient light to enhance the overall atmosphere. Combining functionality with an appealing aesthetic, the luminaire’s photometric performance ensures optimal illumination for a variety of tasks, making it both a practical and beautiful addition to any space.

PROJECT 5

3D Printed Modular Shelf Masters Program | Digital Fabrication Tools & Processes Project Professor - Mary Polites | Completed: Fall 2024

This modular shelf design utilizes a single primary piece and a series of connector components to create a flexible, expandable shelving system. All elements were 3D-printed using a Prusa MK3 printer and PLA filament.

The primary shelf pieces, each measuring 7”x7”x7”, can be connected in any XYZ direction via the connectors.

When four or more pieces are joined, they form a platform capable of supporting a shelving surface.

The system accommodates larger items by varying the lengths of the connector pieces.

To demonstrate the concept, five primary pieces were printed, showcasing the system’s ability to expand in multiple directions and integrate shelving surfaces.

Additionally, a 1”=1’-0” scale model of the complete design was printed to illustrate its full potential. Printing each primary piece required approximately 15 hours, while the scale model, with its complex cantilevered supports, took 30 hours to complete.
