ON-PAGE SEO CHECKLIST: Help your website get found and noticed by Google.

Your website is how your customers learn about your products, services, and expertise. So, it makes sense that you put a lot of effort into how your website looks and feels.

However, for your website to really benefit your customers and you, it’s critical that you look beyond design and focus on the details that most customers won’t notice. You need to think about the details that Google and other search engines care about.

An eye-catching website looks good, but it doesn’t help you get found and clicked on in the Google search engine results page. This is something we frequently discuss with clients who don’t understand why their brand-new website is not automatically getting more traffic.

To get the traffic (clicks) you want from Google search engine results, you need to make sure your on-page SEO is working for you.

WHAT IS ON-PAGE SEO? SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and it is a specialized approach that makes it possible for your website to stand out and be found in Google searches. When most people think of SEO, they think only of keywords.

While keywords are a critical part of SEO, they are just one piece of a bigger SEO strategy that includes page formatting, website layout, content structure, links, image tags, and more.

The optimal on-page SEO strategy makes it easy for search engines like Google to give people the correct answers to their questions.

This is why SEO is important for every website and market.

YOUR ON-PAGE SEO CHECKLIST When reviewing websites for on-page SEO elements, we ask these key questions about every single website, regardless of products, services, and marketspace:

IS THERE ENOUGH CONTENT ON THE PAGE WITH IMPORTANT KEYWORDS? Many companies feel that less content makes it easier for readers to find what they want.

However, search engines are looking for websites and pages that provide more than the bare minimum facts on a product, service, or area of specialization. Search engines need to know that your page is the best source and therefore search result on that topic.

To do this, your pages must have more than 500 words of quality useful content. Search engines devalue websites with thin content, and this has a direct impact on your organic traffic. We typically recommend at least 1,000 words of quality content per page. To make longer content easier to read, use bullet points, bolded text, shorter paragraphs, and easy-to-read language.

IS THE PAGE FAST ENOUGH? Each website is allotted a specific amount of crawl budget, defined by Google as the number of URLs Googlebot can and wants to crawl. Slow pages drain the crawl

budget making it challenging for your quality content to be found by search engines. Ideally you need your pages to load in less than 2 seconds. When your pages load quickly, they can be crawled by search engines and will rank higher in the search engine results page. To improve page load speed, you need to compress your images, remove extra code bloat, and check your hosting plan. A good hosting plan has the most sophisticated caching technology which will decrease a website’s load time.

DOES EACH PAGE HAVE A UNIQUE H1 TAG? One of the key page elements that search engines read is the header tag. The first header, the H1, should always include your keyword. Each header should be unique and keyword rich. Often, we see websites using header tags as styling tools resulting in multiple and duplicate headers.

each section. Use headers sequentially and strategically. Remember that people skim rather than read content so your headers need to grab attention and tell the reader (and search engine) what they will learn.

DO ALL PAGES HAVE UNIQUE TITLES? Page titles are displayed on the browser tab as well as the bolded sentence in search engine results. This is a page element that search engines look at to help them determine what the page content is about.

We frequently find websites that have the same page title throughout the entire site.

This confuses search engines and doesn’t communicate what each page is about. Once these titles are updated with unique page titles, ranking improvements quickly follow.

DO ALL PAGES HAVE UNIQUE META DESCRIPTIONS? Meta descriptions are the content you see displayed in the search results. In just a few sentences, you need to clearly communicate what the page is about and tell the reader what they’ll get from your page. While meta descriptions do not impact SEO, search engines do read them to understand the page content relevancy in relation to the reader’s search. Keep the meta descriptions below 160 characters and make sure to include a call to action (tell the reader what they’ll get from your page). This call to action helps drive clickthroughs from the search results to your page and website.

DO ALL THE IMAGES HAVE ALT TAGS ON THEM? Image alt tags are used to describe the

image or what the image is representing. The image alt tag is used to help the visually impaired and search engines read this text to better understand what your page represents. Your image alt tag should include your important keywords, as Google will read the tags while crawling the site.

DO ALL PAGES HAVE INTERNAL LINKS POINTING TO AND FROM THE PAGE? When search engines are crawling your site, they want to see that each page is connected and supporting other pages on the website.

This indicates that content is relevant throughout the website and supports the overall theme of the brand.

Start with content – do you have quality content that informs and answers questions?

Next, look at your headers – are you using the H1 tag correctly?

Now, review your meta descriptions – do they encourage people to click on your URL? Then, look at your links – do you have internal links and are you using keyword-rich anchor text?

And now, load your page on your smartphone – is it easy to navigate and read the content?

An anchor text is a visible, clickable word or string of words that links to a relevant page. Keyword-rich anchor text supports the content on the other pages, giving it page authority. By linking from a supporting page with keyword-rich anchor text to the main page, you are telling search engines this new page supports the content on the main page and adds to the overall relevancy and domain authority of the website.

IS YOUR WEBSITE MOBILEFRIENDLY? In March of 2018, Google rolled out mobilefirst indexing. This means that Google is predominately using the mobile version of your website for indexing and ranking (but still crawls the desktop version). If the mobile version of your website has a poor user experience, this negatively impacts your page rankings. A mobile-friendly website means that the content is easily readable on your mobile device, loads quickly, menus are easy to use, buttons are easy to click and the layout is highly readable.

FSVP ENFORCEMENT UNDERWAY When the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) was passed into law in 2011, it caused a slow but turbulent disruption in how we attack food safety practices that is still felt today. Previously, the onus of ensuring food safety rested squarely in the hands of the manufacturers and private label brands. Now, importers of foreign food and ingredients are responsible too - the Foreign Supplier Verification Program (FSVP) made sure of that.

Except for some very small businesses subject to the Produce Safety Rule, all compliance

dates for importers subject to FSVP have now passed. This means that if you import food (and dietary ingredients are considered food) from a foreign supplier, you must comply with FSVP or risk action from the FDA. Not only have the compliance dates for FSVP passed, but so has the learning and information gathering grace period the FDA generally allows after unleashing new laws to the CFR (Code of Federal Regulations). The seven warning letters issued by the FDA specifically citing FSVP non-compliance are proof of that.

The consistent message in all seven warning letters was that each food importer had not done its jobs to verify that the food it imported had been produced in a manner that meets applicable U.S. food safety standards. In other words, they did not develop FSVPs for one or more products they imported; therefore, they endangered the public’s safety. In fact, two of the seven warning letters were directly related to salmonella outbreaks tied to food the two companies had imported.

Implementing FSVPs for food imported from foreign suppliers is a daunting task. While it is customary to have a supplier qualification program set up to evaluate your supplier’s ability to provide unadulterated products, now you must also have a qualified individual(s) who can perform hazard analyses and riskbased preventive controls for those products.

It’s also beneficial to be able to evaluate any HARPC (Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventive Controls) plans established by your foreign suppliers and make sure you have verification activities documented.

At the time of this report, the coronavirus outbreak in China is still the major issue facing supply. The epicenter of the virus in Wuhan City and Hubei Province is a crucial location where many products in our industry — such as L-cysteine, Taurine and Glucosamine — are produced.

The first phase agreement has been signed between China and the U.S. So far, two section 301 tariffs have decreased from 15% to 7.5% – good news for buyers and sellers.

Transportation and production have been delayed nationwide due to the Chinese Spring Festival, and citizens have been advised to stay at home in hopes of containing the virus. It is predicted the situation will get better this spring, but summer seems more realistic.

INGREDIENT MARKET REPORT 5-HYDROXYTRYPTOPHAN (5-HTP) Supply is still low while the price is high.

This trend may last for months due to the shortage of the starting material Griffonia Simplicifolia.

SPIRULINA Production is planned in April because of its seasonal features.

Supply is currently a little tight and price should decrease slightly following the tariff adjustment.

TAURINE The two major factories are in Hubei, so supply is very tight.

Price will remain strong and the concern for Taurine will last the longest among all ingredients.

TRIBULUS EXTRACT There might be a temporary shortage due to transportation issues, but supply should quickly return to normal.

VITAMIN B Vitamin B5 supply and price were already very tight and now the supply issue is even worse, so most factories have stopped quoting.

For Vitamin B1 and B6, most factories have announced a delay in production recovery and price is increasing slightly for now.

Price is stable for Vitamin B12. Due to its high value, air shipment is usually utilized, and lead time is not affected much.

FACTORY QUALIFICATION With ingredient suppliers located in various countries around the world, establishing factory qualification programs can be an extremely daunting, albeit necessary task. Before we even bring a factory onto the ingredientsonline.com™ platform, they must undergo and pass a thorough evaluation process to become “qualified.” Our audit checklist reviews everything from site security to production procedures, to testing verification and compliance certifications. We review every procedure related to cGMPs, food safety and hazard analyses. Documentation audits and inspections are meticulously carried out for both new and existing factory partners.

INGREDIENT QUALIFICATION In order for a qualified factory to showcase their ingredient on the ingredientsonline.com™ platform, they are first given a list of required product documents that must be reviewed and accepted by our QA/QC team. These documents include the product's specification sheets, SDS's, manufacturing flow charts, etc. We review and audit all these documents before approving the ingredient. If any document is missing or in question, those concerns are addressed and resolved before the ingredient is placed online. Additionally, we understand the importance of supply-chain transparency, so these documents are conveniently downloadable on the platform. Our goal is to provide as much information as possible on every ingredient. Since we’ve already established a relationship with the factory during their qualification process, any additional information that might be needed is just a couple of emails away.

MATERIAL QUALITY AND CONSISTENCY We understand that above all else, the quality of the material and adherence to specifications are imperative. In order to establish quality, there needs to be consistency in practice and process. Warning letters are sent to factories that start to underperform. Any factory that continues to score below our standards are disqualified and removed from ingredientsonline.com™. This ensures that we only partner with factories that can live up to our expectations.
