Ahead of Veterans Day, ‘U.S. Vets – Inglewood’ site receives refurbishment and a visit from Rams legends Inglewood to play Edison in playoff quarterfinal at El Camino College By Kenneth Miller, Publisher
By Brea Mitchell, Staff Writer
Over the weekend, for the second consecutive year, a refurbishing project took place at U.S. Vets – Inglewood with the help of the Los Angeles Rams and Rocket Mortgage. The renovations included interior updates in the dining hall, and additional pool tables in the on-site entertainment center. The afternoon also included food and conversation, as Rams legends Todd Lyght and Harold Jackson were in attendance mingling with the veterans. U.S. Vets – Inglewood, located near the corner of West Arbor Vitae Street and Hindry Avenue, is the inaugural U.S. Vets site and aims to support
successful transitions of military veterans and their families through the provision of housing, counseling, and career development. The afternoon event concluded with a “Camo Ribbon-Cutting ceremony” of the refurbished dining hall. Through the U.S. Vets’ “Make Camo Your Cause” campaign, wearing camouflage is encouraged as a way to show appreciation and gratitude for our veterans and their service, as camouflage print was designed to conceal and protect our soldiers in combat. “‘Make Camo Your Cause’ is a way to honor our veterans during Veterans Day so that we can bring in more
money to help support our services. Not only do we provide housing to homeless vets, but we also offer case management, career development, and other programs that support families and women,” said Jessica Gholson, Program Direction of U.S. Vets – Inglewood. Those who are interested in supporting the U.S. Vets Camo Cause can shop for camouflage merchandise on the U.S. Vets website. “Initiatives such as this will bring in additional dollars that will help grow our programs and give us the ability to expand our services even further,” said Gholson.
White House Officials Break Down Pres. Biden’s Build Back Better Plan Aldon Thomas Stiles | California Black Media
California is one of many states whose policies helped to shape President Joe Biden’s $1.75 trillion Build Back Better plan, according to Gov. Gavin Newsom and Assistant to the President and White House Domestic Policy Advisor Susan Rice. The U.S. House of Representatives held a procedural vote last Friday that cleared the way for a full floor vote on the legislation, which could happen as early as next week. “California’s values will be on the national stage with the Build Back Better plan. @POTUS is creating
good jobs, investing in clean energy to fight climate change, helping families through at-home elder, disability & child care, universal pre-k, & more,” Newsom’s office tweeted about a week before the U.S. House of Representatives voted last Friday night 228 to 206 to approve Biden’s other signature bill, the $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill. The infrastructure bill and its companion Build Back Better Act are central pieces to the President’s plan to jump start the U.S. economy and put it on the road to recovery after surviving a sharp downturn brought on by the
COVID-19 global pandemic. “It’s a once-in-a-generation investment that’s going to create millions of jobs modernizing our infrastructure – our bridges, our roads, our broadband, a whole range of things,” said Biden on Saturday morning, celebrating the passage of the infrastructure bill that he is touting as “bipartisan.” Thirteen Republican members of the House broke ranks with their party and voted for the bill. “To turn the climate crisis into an opportunity; and it puts us on a path to Continued on page 8
Inglewood High School football team will continue its drive towards its first CIF championship during the modern era when the Sentinels play host to Huntington Beach Edison on Nov. 12 at El Camino College at 7p.m. Coach Mil’Von James and the Sentinels put all the criticism behind them last week and polished off No. 5 seed St. Bonaventure 26-10 at Ventura College in the Division 2 CIF-SS playoffs. The Sentinel defense stymied the Seraphs star running back Delon Thompson, keeping him under 100 yards on a foggy chilly night. He finished with 98 yards in 22 carries. They also knocked out the Seraphs quarterback in the first quarter and was led by linebacker Taariq AlUqdah and two way star junior Jamari Johnson, who had two firsthalf sacks and caught a 60-yard pass from UCLA bound quarterback Justyn Martin was more than enough to improve to 9-0 on the season. Sentinels stary running back Tomarion Harden who is also headed to UCLA rushed for a game high 132 yards on two carries to help the offense overcome two Martin interceptions. (UCLA commit) to linebacker Taariq Al-Uqdah(Washington State commit). Harden rushed for 132 yards in 20 carries and scored one touchdown. This week Inglewood will turn their attention to a disciplined Edison squad which James has a tremendous amount of respect for. “I grew up watching Edison compete for championships. They are one of the few public schools Continued on page 7
