BUTTS RESPONDS TO “420” MAYOR MISLEADING NEWS REPORTS Will Travel Francis Taylor, Asst. Editor

Passengers flying out of Los Angeles International Airport can now bring their marijuana with them. The policy is tied to Proposition 64, which legalized pot in California. As a result, LAX is changing its policy to allow travelers 21 or older to carry weed. There are limits: a maximum of 28.5 grams (about an ounce) of standard marijuana and 8 grams of the condensed variety. One big warning: If you’re flying out of state or out of the country, that pot may well be illegal at your destination. Also, police note possession

Political office election campaigns provide an opportunity for incumbents to declare their accomplishments on behalf of their constituents. Those declarations allow voters to review what the elected has accomplished and whether or not they are worthy of re-election. On the other hand, campaigns also provide an opportunity for opponents, especially those who do not have a background or platform that will support their candidacy or a credible, opposing point of view regarding the elected position’s future direction; as well as those who do not support the incumbent, opportunities to advance assertions that are misleading and sometimes blatantly false. In about one month Inglewood voters will select the next mayor of the City of Inglewood and Mayor James T. Butts is facing a number of challengers. While his accomplishments in some of the usual categories where voters measure effectiveness; budget control, economic and commercial development, jobs, public safety, and day-to-day municipal leadership – from pothole repairs to tree trimming – there is very little that may be said about what he has not accomplished, despite the naysayers who may be heard expressing their angst in weekly city council meetings.

The city, by all relevant measures, is on a path to distinguish the City of Inglewood among American cities in a manner that is unmatched in the United States. His opponents are not left with any significant, noteworthy or factual criticism that will cause one to ponder their mayoral vote. Mayor Butts and the city council that supports his leadership continue to receive unprecedented applause for the new football arena, the initiative the Los Angeles Philharmonic is bringing to the City of Inglewood, the proposed Los Angeles Clippers Arena, the people mover system that will mitigate the traffic congestion, the dynamic increase in property values, the jobs that have already arrived and will continue to arrive in the city, historically low crime rates and an open, weekly city council meeting that swiftly discharges the city’s business while giving everyone who wishes to speak an opportunity to do so. Absent any real, honest or objective criticism, some are attempting to sway the mayor’s supporters by advancing old, allegations that have already been thoroughly reviewed, investigated and dismissed. Specifically, recent news reports cite the mayor’s campaign loan to a council member and his brother’s employment.

“The campaign loan made from my campaign to the campaign of George Dotson is a common occurrence between elected officials that support other elected officials.” Mayor Butts said. “The loans were reported to the FPPC and the status of the loans has been reported every reporting period since they were made between five and six years ago for Councilman Dotson’s run for City Council,” he continued. “The loans are not from personal funds nor are they allowed for a candidate’s personal use. I could have just donated the funds to member Dotson’s campaign as MSG has
