Who’s Running in the Local Elections?

R aces for federal, state and county offices are in full swing now that the filing deadline has passed. So, who will Inglewood voters have to choose from among candidates running for Congress, state Senate and Assembly, and county Board of Supervisors?

Two candidates in L.A. County races are running unopposed. In the Second District Board of Supervisors’ race, which includes Inglewood, Mark Ridley-Thomas has no opposition. Neither does L.A. County District Attorney Jackie Lacey, also running for re-election.

Political newbie Autumn Burke, the daughter of former congresswoman and county Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite Burke, is unopposed for a second term. Her district covers Inglewood, Hawthorne, Lawndale and El Segundo.

Democratic Congresswoman Maxine Waters of the 43rd District is running against Republican Omar Navarro, a small business owner from Torrance. The veteran lawmaker was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1991.

by Sen. Isadore Hall, who is seeking the 44th Congressional seat, vacated by former L.A. Councilwoman Janice Hahn. Hahn is seeking to replace the term-limited District 4 County Supervisor Don Knabe.

State senate candidates are former Democratic Assemblymen

Steve Bradford and Warren Furutani; Compton City Councilman Isaac Galvan and special-education teacher Charlotte Svolos of Torrance, the only Republican in the field. The district covers Inglewood, Hawthorne, Lennox and several other South Bay cities.

U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer is

retiring. Democratic State Attorney General Kamala Harris and Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez are among the candidates in the crowded, three-party race running for Boxer’s seat.

The June 7 ballot will also include primaries for U.S. President.

How Women Can Help Women Heal In April

ice President Joe Biden recently introduced pop star Lady Gaga at the Oscars to spotlight the issue of campus sexual assault, which is part of a White House campaign against domestic and sexual violence.

Gaga’s performance, which included sexual-assault survivors onstage, highlights a startling problem: despite immense progress, women continue to suffer spousal abuse at an alarming rate. A woman is beaten every nine seconds in the United States, according to Domestic Violence Statistics.

“April is Women Helping Each Others Heal Month – an empowering message to all women that there’s abundant hope if you are or have ever experienced spousal abuse,” says Aurea McGarry, a domestic violence and cancer survivor who has dedicated her life to advocacy for those in need, including abused women.

“My awakening came with my daughter, because I couldn’t bear for her to think that what I suffered from my ex-husband was acceptable.”

From that moment on, McGarry —now an Emmy-winning TV show host, charity expert and sought-after inspirational speaker—flowered.

She says there are several ways women can help themselves, and

Company Re-Opens Wells Next to L.A. Elementary School Environmentalists Call for Criminal Investigation of Oil Company Wells Re-Open Next to Elementary School

TAND-L.A. is calling on L.A. City Attorney Mike Feuer to open a criminal investigation of Freeport-McMoRan Oil & Gas after the company re-opened more than a dozen idle oil wells across the street from an elementary school in South LA. Community members are outraged at what they say was a calculated maneuver to side-step the law and avoid the costs of permanently plugging the wells.

The Los Angeles Times reports local residents had urged the Los Angeles Fire Department to demand the company either restart or close the idle wells, hoping to leverage a section of city code that would force the wells’ closure in the interest of community health and safety. Instead, Freeport reactivated the idle wells, restoring the flow of natural gas just across the street from the Carson-Gore Academy of Environmental Studies, named after envi(Continued on page 10)

Council Approves More Agreements for Senior Center

T

he Inglewood City Council approved the following payments and agreements on Tuesday: • Payment to Buchalter Nemer for legal services in the amount of $15,936.18 • A one-year blanket purchase order with KMK Supply Company for the purchase of various janitorial supplies in the amount of $64,397 • Authorization to pay Western Specialty Contractors for emergency roof and caulking services rendered on the City Hall roof in the amount of $53,659.99 • A lease agreement with the Assembly Committee on Rules, California State Assembly to occupy office space on the 6th floor of City Hall in the monthly amount of $2,763.72 • An agreement with the City of Los Angeles to accept FY 2015 UASI grant funds in the amount

Locust St. A Temporary Shoring Easement Agreement was also approved between the City of Inglewood, as the Successor Agency to the Inglewood Redevelopment Agency, and Regency Towers Senior Housing, L.P., to aid in the construction of the new senior center. Payment in the amount of $1,500 was approved to cover the legal costs of reviewing the easement.

Leroy Fisher complained that multiple requests for Republic Services to pick up items have gone unanswered. “We are paying all this money and they have an open-ended contract…” he said.

Mayor Butts instructed Asst. City Manager Mike Falkow to handle the matter.

A young man came to “call for accountability and transparency from the City” in connection with the officer-involved shooting deaths of Marquintan Sandlin and Kisha Michael on Feb. 21. “I’m here to lift up the names of the families involved…The families are saying that the City has not reached out,” he said.

“That’s not true,” Mayor Butts replied. “The brother of (Sandlin) reached out and the City donated $4,000 for his burial.”

he violence that occurred at Donald Trump’s rally in Chicago last week is actually a déjà vu experience in American politics. Back in 1968, violence erupted in Chicago at the Democratic National Convention.

Demonstrators clashed outside the convention with nearly 12,000 police, 7500 Army troops, 7500 Illinois National Guardsmen and 1000 Secret Service agents over 5 days.

Protestors were marching against the very unpopular Vietnam War. Violence began on Sunday, August 25, 1968 when antiwar leaders tried to get permits from the city to sleep in Lincoln Park, but their request was denied. By Wednesday, August 29, the confrontation had escalated to include tear gas, stink bombs, fist fights and other attacks.

Women’s History Month How Many of These Early Black Feminists Do You Know?

hough black feminists have wielded social media to make willful strides into public consciousness, black feminism is nothing new. The challenge of being doubly oppressed as a black woman has always colored feminist conversations, and minority women rarely have the luxury of fighting solely on behalf of their gender. The question of intersectionality predates hashtags and Twitter feminism and goes all the way back to impasses such as the one between black journalist Ida B. Wells and white suffragist Frances Willard. Wells implored Willard to acknowledge the evil of lynching, while Willard, blinded by her race and class privileges, believed black men to be deserving targets.

Though not always recognized, black women have always made forays into the feminist dialogue to ensure black women and girls don’t remain an afterthought. In celebra-

Coffee Break

ately I’ve been on a coffee kick instead of my usual tea drinking. I decided to look into the history of coffee and it turns out to be pretty interesting.

The plant is native to subtropical Africa and some Southern Asia islands and is a shrub reaching 15 ft.

Coffee first appeared as a drink in 15th century Arabia. Thought of as a “Muslim drink” in Europe, it was not until 1600, when Pope Clement VIII deemed it a Christian drink, did coffee become more widely accepted. The first coffee house opened in Rome in 1645.

Coffee reached America in the Colonial Period. It wasn’t as popular as alcoholic beverages, but by the Revo-lutionary War, it had caught on big time. This was due, in part, to the increased taxes on British tea and the 1773 protest, the Boston Tea Party, where tea was dumped into the Boston Harbor.

Coffeehouses and taverns appeared in Boston in 1676. One such was the Green Dragon where John Adams, James Otis, and Paul Revere

planned rebellion.

After the War of 1812, and the temporary cut off of British tea imports to America, coffee took another jump in popularity. By 1860, we were the largest consumer in the world, and by 1920 we consumed half of all coffee produced worldwide.

There are two main species of coffee beans commercially cultivated – arabica and robusta. Like wine, coffee has varietals (genetic subspecies) and are generally known by the region in which they are grown; Columbian, Kona, and Java are some. Arabica beans are grown in Latin America, eastern Africa, and Asia, while robusta beans are cultivated in Central Africa, throughout Southeast Asia, and Brazil.

Buying In A Sellers’ Market

ith the economy picking up and the real estate market starting to boom, many of us are caught in a tough spot. Wanting to reach our goal of becoming home owners, only to realize that the price on housing is high and the inventory on affordable housing is low.

This is generally referred to as a sellers’ market, which means exactly what it sounds like. All the negotiating power is in the sellers’ hands. This essentially leaves the average buyers hustling to find deals.

And once you find a deal, you have to be ready to move quickly, because of all the cash buyers waiting to make offers on anything in the market that is undervalued. And once a seller sees an all cash offer, it is very likely they will accept that offer, leaving the average buyer up a creek without a paddle.

So where does that leave the average working person? It puts many of us in a place where we have to get into bidding wars on properties that might not be worth as much as they are selling for. With these prices, many people will put themselves in a bad position.

The reason I stress all these different things is not to scare anyone away from buying a home, but to take the stress out of so many people that I have spoken to lately, who are worried that they will never be able to get into their dream home.

Real estate can be a very boom or bust business and the market always has its ups and downs so today might not be the best time to buy a home, but that doesn’t mean it will be that way tomorrow.

he Inglewood Public Library will honor Cesar Chavez Day by welcoming the UCLA Labor Center and the Dream Resource Center to a special program for undocumented students and laborers.

STAND-L.A., a coalition of community groups dedicated to protecting public health from neighborhood drilling, wants immediate action to be taken against the company for converting water injection wells into gas producing wells without obtaining necessary city approval. The group is calling on the City Attorney to investigate whether the company intentionally chose to circumvent the law and put the health of Angelenos at risk in order to avoid the costs of cleanup.

“The City Attorney should immediately open a criminal investigation into whether FMOG failed to obtain the required permits,” argued Richard Parks, President of the non-profit Redeemer Community Partnership.

“Furthermore, the Los Angeles Fire Department should move quickly to protect taxpayers by enforcing city code that requires hundreds of idle wells to be either activated or shut down.

For too long the city’s elected officials have supported oil interests over the public interest, trading public health and safety for corporate profits. We need our city leaders to move quickly to protect its residents, first and foremost.”

Freeport-McMoRan Oil & Gas faces growing debt amidst falling oil prices and could be stalling to avoid costs of plugging the wells. If the company waits for bankruptcy, the burden would fall on local taxpayers to pay for the cleanup, similar to what could happen at the oil site located at Beverly Hills High School.

Veneco, the company leasing the well from the Beverly Hills School District, may go bankrupt before it can fulfill a condition of its lease requiring the site be cleaned

by March 2017. Should Veneco file for bankruptcy before that time, the school district would be left responsible for all costs associated with paying for the cleanup.

Freeport-McMoRan could be taking a similar tack with its Washington Boulevard site, hoping to avoid paying up to $500,000 to permanently close each well.
