Visiting Ingeus’ Central London Forward’s Integration Hub, the Mayor joined one of our employability support sessions for Afghan refugees. Sadiq Khan said: It was brilliant to meet some of the Afghan refugees at Ingeus today and I’m glad we can offer such a wide range of fully funded courses and training to people in various stages of their adult education journey.

The measures will benefit an additional 400,000 Londoners, and includes a focus on under-supported groups including disabled people, refugees and the over 50s; and the No Wrong Door programme will join up support to help more people access the right support, no matter their starting point.

The start of June marked an extremely busy week for our Australian colleagues, including visits to our Restart Scheme in Hackney as well as a special event to recognise the 20th anniversary of Ingeus in the UK, attended by colleagues, partners, and customers past and present.

Ingeus was founded in Australia in 1989 to help people realise their potential –and while lots of other things may have changed, our core purpose hasn’t. We’re now part of the APM Group family delivering services across 11 countries, all united in our mission to enable better lives. Our teams met with Group CEO, Michael Anghie; Founder and Executive Chair, Megan Wynne, Tim Sullivan, and Neville Power to share their passion and programmes for making a positive difference as well as discuss plans to support even more people in the future. We can’t wait! members

The teens sprang into action and shone a light on topical issues through activities such as renovating and decorating public spaces, creating leaflets for mental health charities, clean up campaigns amongst so much more! All the while, providing them with valuable transferable skills that they can use to progress in careers or further education.

It was a great opportunity to shine a spotlight on our NCS programme and celebrate that NCS has benefited 600,000 people to-date, of which Ingeus are proud to have supported over 130,000 since 2010.

Celebrating NCS on Youth Skills Day

Single mum Donna, 19, had the motivation and determination to make positive changes to her life – but needed support to move forward. She was living in assisted accommodation for young parents and had problems with her mental health. Donna had previously worked in the care sector but dealing with end-of-life patients had badly affected her mental wellbeing.

After joining the FutureYou programme delivered by Ingeus and partners in Greater Manchester, things began to move very quickly for Donna. The programme was set up to provide tailored support and advice to 18- to 24-year-olds who are not in education, employment or training (NEET).

On the day of this initial appointment with Kim, Donna applied for a job at a fast-food restaurant. She was invited for an interview two days later and was offered a full-time job. Donna is now waiting for her uniform and needs to complete some online learning before starting her new role. She will continue to receive support from FutureYou to ensure all the tasks set out in her action plan are completed.

After signing up to FutureYou, Donna was given one-to-one support from Kim, a mentor based at Ingeus partner Wigan Youth Zone. Kim drew up a personalised action plan to help Donna move forward. Donna explained that she had family who could support her with childcare if she got a job and talked about how her mental health had been affected while working in the care sector. She also wanted help with writing a CV as she felt her current one needed updating.

Donna says: I’m so glad that I signed up to FutureYou. Kim has listened, been really positive, and encouraged me to find employment. I can’t believe I have only known her a week and I have already found a job.

Kim adds: I haven’t known Donna for very long but it’s a pleasure to support someone with so much motivation and enthusiasm to find work. It makes the job I do easier, I’m glad that we have been able to support her to a positive outcome.

Digital exclusion is closely linked to the cost-of-living crisis in the UK. As the cost-of-living increases, the poorest families are having to cancel broadband subscriptions, leading to a stronger digital divide. Being offline means simple things like creating or updating your CV to apply for work, or accessing bills and benefit statements, become very difficult. Digital exclusion is also related to an increased risk of mental and physical health problems.

The taskforce has identified one of the most vulnerable groups as care leavers. We will therefore be running a series of money management workshops specifically for care leavers and receiving data chips (pre-loaded SIM cards) from partners on the taskforce to distribute to customers who can’t afford an internet connection.

The Digital Inclusion Agenda for Change has a bold ambition to make Greater Manchester a 100% digitally enabled city – and Ingeus has recently joined the GMCA Digital Inclusion taskforce to help achieve this.

The taskforce brings together organisations from across the city to help combat the upcoming crisis in digital skills and is made up of 180 members from across the industry, VCSC sector, public sector partners, local government, schools and health. Being part of the taskforce involves meeting bi-monthly to share key updates, showcase projects and programmes that are supporting residents to get online and discuss opportunities for collaboration to continue to tackle digital exclusion.

Working on Able Future, which supports those in employment with their mental health needs, really does tick all the boxes in terms of the Ingeus values, and it really feels like I am at home in my role.

It’s the first time I have worked in our health division, and it has been ultimately more rewarding than any other contract I have worked on. There is nothing more satisfying than closing the laptop after a long day knowing you have helped so many people and will ultimately allow them to have a more enjoyable life and cope with their own difficult days.”

This month we’re putting Simon, Tansell Brown, Operations Support Manager for Able Futures, in the spotlight.

We asked Simon some of life’s essential questions: Summer or Winter? Summer every time – I love the outdoors. Chocolate or sweets? It would have to be Chocolate –Caramac is King. Night or morning?

Simon Tansell Brown, Able Futures Find out more about Able Futures at able-futures.co.uk

Simon has been with the business for 18 years in a variety of different roles, and is now enjoying it more than ever: “My original profession was a cook, and I completed around 10 years in hospitality. After returning to study and completing a Human Sciences degree, I fancied a change and I secured a job as a Marketing Administrator. Nearly 18 years later along with several jobs and internal promotions through various mergers and acquisitions, I am now Operations Support Manger for Able Futures overseeing its Contact Centre and Employer Team operations.

Getting to know you with...

Morning - I guess it’s an age thing as once upon a time I preferred the night. City or countryside? Countryside as I love the raw beauty of nature. Cats or dogs? As a family we have 4 cats so it’s got to be cats – Woody, Hulk, Harley Quinn and Lynx. Dressed up or casual? Casual – after years in suits and ties I now love a t-shirt more. Phone calls or emails? Phone calls as it’s good to talk. Books or films? Books because there’s nothing like that new paper smell. Night out or night in? Night in more and more since I hit 50 this year. Holidays or home comforts? Holidays as often as possible with family and good friends.
