A rising star among Georgian wines, JSC Telavi Wine Cellar has recently swept up numerous medals at various international wine competitions. It has stuck steadily to its traditions, but it is now making innovative moves in response to new consumer demand.

n July, wine magazine Decanter released the results of its Decanter World Wine Awards 2017 (DWWA 2017). The magazine, launched in London in

1975, founded the competition in 2004. On average, over 15,000 types of wine are submitted every year, with this year’s submissions reaching 17,200 entries.

Having expanded their export markets, their wine is now found in 26 countries. Over 60 types of all Georgian wines are made in the Kakheti province, a leading wine-producing region. The company’s iconic wine is the Marani Reserve, which is produced with only stellar grapes. Other popular wines are the Marani Tsinandali, Marani Mukuzani and Marani Kindzmarauli.

Around the same time, the partners heard that the renowned wine company Telavi Wine Cellar, founded in1915, had announced bankruptcy due to poor business caused by the company’s shift to employee-run operations after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Ramazashvili and Zukakishvili decided to purchase the company and consumers would desire. For the company’s logo, the two chose a stylization of the word Marani, which means “wine cellar.” Soon after, they adopted Marani as the brand name, which then became synonymous with the company.

Ramazashvili, who was in charge of running the winery, made massive investments in replacing old facilities and consulted experts from France and Germany to

Some time ago, Ramazashvili happened to hear of a Ukrainian wine importer who knew of a document detailing the Kondoli vineyard as a renowned premium-grade vineyard. He discovered in the national library a 1742 book titled Life of Georgia writ3

The book detailed 18thcentury life in Georgia and referred to the Kondoli vineyard as a “vineyard that produces noble wines” that was representative of the wine-producing region. Ramazashvili then introduced the vineyard’s history with a description on the black label of the wine bottles.

With Georgian wines continuing to affirm and reaffirm their excellence in international competitions, Ramazashvili once said, “We will follow our main direction, to be faithful to our winemaking traditions backed by 8000 years of history and at the same time keep an eye on new trends in the world to react adequately to new demand and directions in the consumer market.” His company is pouring its utmost passion into creating a new premium wine that blends the merits of the Georgian wine-making tradition with a modern oenology method.
