Our land boasts strong assets like the sea and the climate but it also shows a number of liabilities. Ours is a “bite and run” tourism, usually linked to the hot season. An authentic summer invasion and a short-lasting one. assimo rispetto della tradizione e conservazione della struttura originale caratterizzano Palazzo D’Auria Secondo che oggi ospita un bed and breakfast e un ristorante. L’impianto originale dell’edificio risale a tempi davvero antichi. Infatti fu eretto nel corso del 1500 su ruderi romani e medievali, ma l’aspetto attuale deriva dall’ultima sistemazione del centro storico di Lucera avvenuta tra i secoli ‘700 e ‘800. L’edificio rispetta le caratteristiche delle abitazioni dell’epoca: spessi muri in pietra, grande atrio e imponente scalone che conduce al piano nobile del palazzo che ospita le camere del B&B, caratterizzate da affreschi Liberty e arredi d’epoca. Il ristorante, dove mangiare cucina tipica e rivisitata preparata con grande attenzione agli ingredienti locali e di stagione, occupa gli spazi che erano adibiti a cantina e stalla, mentre la corte interna, di chiara impronta spagnola, ospita gli eventi organizzati dal proprietario Alberto Trincucci. Ad arricchire il fascino di questa dimora storica contribuisce la scelta di pezzi e ornamenti d’arredo di antiquariato e modernariato, che continuano a narrare le vicende dei luoghi a ospiti e avventori. Utmost care for local traditions and sheer preservation of the original architecture are the calling cards of Palazzo D’Auria Secondo bed and breakfast. The original layout of the building is centuries old. It was erected in the 16th century on the pre-existing Roman and medieval ruins. However, its current architecture is consistent with the last urban planning of Lucera’s historic centre which dates back to the 18th and 19th centuries.

The building was built in the style of the local construction standards of those times, namely thick stone walls, a large courtyard and a huge stairway leading to the main floor of the mansion housing the rooms of the B&B, decorated with Art Nouveau frescoes and period furniture. The restaurant where guests can taste traditional cuisine and creative concoctions made with an eye to local and seasonal
ingredients is located in the rooms which were formerly used as wine cellars and horse stables. The inner courtyard, clearly reminiscent of Spanish architecture, is home to a series of cultural events organized by owner and manager Alberto Trincucci. The charm of this period house is further enhanced by a fine selection of pieces of antiquity and decor items of modern design which bear witness to the local history. 75

Masseria Mazzalorsa is an echanting complex of trulli houses and cummerse (traditional barrel-vaulted dwellings with a pitched roof) lying in the outlying hamlet of Canale di Pirro in the rural environs of Alberobello. Owner Cecilia Ranieri, the landlady, does not see it as her home but a chance to take a dive into the past and long for a new harmony in life. A sort of trip down memory lane a journey through time lost and recovered
amid carafes, table cloths, tea cups and handmade doilies, antique items handed down by two beloved female relatives on her mother side. “These objects are their living symbols and stand as constant mementoes since these women cannot be physically present; they keep me company as if they were actually close to me here”. This B&B is just Cecilia’s long-cherished dream come true. However, only those who have nurtured their memories
can actually unfold their secrets, so that, aided by her cousin Alessandro, an engineer, Cecilia decided to fully devote herself to start restoring the masseria with great attention to details, in keeping with the spirit of the place and in compliance with the standards and guidelines prescribed by the Monuments and Fine Arts Office. The venerable 18th century building has been brought to a new life and today is ready to welcome guests in two

Il B&B è la realizzazione di un sogno che si era portata dentro per anni. Ma soltanto chi è depositario dei ricordi è in grado di dipanare il filo della memoria: così Cecilia ha deciso di fare tutto da sé, con l’aiuto del cugino ingegnere Alessandro che l’ha seguita nell’attenta ristrutturazione che ha rispettato il genius loci e tutti i canoni imposti dalla Sovrintendenza in quanto la masseria è patrimonio storico culturale. E il vecchio edificio del ‘700, ora rinato, è pronto a ricevere gli ospiti nei due appartamenti che hanno il nome delle sue splendide figlie Cristina e Carolina, donando a chi vi soggiorna un senso di pace che soltanto una casa con l’anima può dare. All’esterno maestosi alberi di tiglio e fico donano ombra e frescura ed è piacevole perdersi nella macchia mediterranea tra
tenero sorriso e con i buonissimi dolci preparati da lei con antiche ricette, ne esce rigenerata, come dopo un bagno di tenerezza che con parole sue descrive così: “qui ritrovo la bellezza e la felicità di un fiore che sboccia e di un cuore che si apre all’amore”.

fully-appointed apartments named after Cecilia’s two gorgeous daughters, Cristina and Carolina. Here one can relish the peaceful and quiet feel that only houses with a vibrant soul can convey. Outside huge linden and fig trees provide cool spots of shade and it is a pleasure to wander about the Mediterranean scrubland among oaks, Macedonian oaks and downy oaks; together with rock-hewn grottoes this rural area was used as a safe haven and shelter for the so-called briganti, the local banditti. Everywhere silence is broken only by the chirping of cicadas. There was no better place than this to recall the lost years of childhood and to painstakingly boost the value of a farmhouse which Cecilia inherited from her father who had acquired the estate forty years ago. She used to walk with him to these places as a child, she can remember huge banquet tables and cheerful guests. Today, whenever Cecilia is back to the masseria she feels rejuvenated and welcomes her guests with a tender smile and scrumptious homespun sweets made according old recipes. It’s like coming through a sense of tenderness and feel utterly cuddled, something she describes in the following terms “here I find the beauty and the happiness of a budding flower and a heart disclosing itself to love”.

a Valletta è un agriturismo “creato”, tra il bosco a monte e il lago Varano separato da una sottile striscia di terra dal mare, una quindicina di anni fa da Franco Milone per accogliere tutti coloro che amano la natura, gli itinerari non battuti dal turismo sul Gargano, tra le sue bellezze e le sue delizie.
