02 THE SUPERIOR

METHOD We rely on concrete for many aspects of life – the roads we drive on, the dams that help produce power or control flooding, and structures that form our cities, to name a few. But like all building materials, it deteriorates over time. This is where Hydrodemolition has proven to be the most ideal method of repair.

THE SUPERIOR METHOD

Hydrodemolition

The superior method Hydrodemolition is ideal for removing selected parts without damaging the rebar. Basically you leave the good concrete and reinforcements undamaged. It’s the sustainable way to protect and preserve concrete constructions. Life cycle analyses shows that hydrodemolition superiors other methods and gives a durability that equals a new construction. The impact-free process of hydrodemolition eliminates microfractures that jeopardize the integrity of a structure while also cleaning and descaling rebar without damaging it. In addition to precise removal, hydrodemolition leaves behind a rough, craggy surface that provides an ideal texture for bonding new material. Pull-off tests Independent pull-off tests show that the bonding strength achieved through hydrodemolition is much higher than that of jackhammers or other mechanical methods. According to the Swedish Cement and Concrete Research Institute, using hydrodemolition for concrete repair results in a life expectancy of 21-35 years versus 7-12 years with mechanical chiseling. High performance and safety Compared to other methods, such as chipping hammers and handheld water jetting equipment, robots reduce labor and minimize the risk of injury. Robots also perform repeating cycles 24/7, which means

10

that you get the same speed, the same performance and the same quality from start to finish. Also, increased speed of concrete removal reduces the total project time. A greener method The presence of water is the very basics of hydrodemolition; water source, wastewater and the discharge of wastewater. As water source, fresh water can be pumped from tank or direct from natural water source, such as river or damm. Polluted wastewater can easily be collected in an embankment and be pumped to Aquajet’s EcoClear water treatment system. Treated water can then be discharged into the environment or recirculated back into the fresh water tank, where the process starts over, eliminating the need for a constant fresh water source or a third-party to collect and remove water. Some of the water evaporates during the hydrodemolition process, but up to 90% can be collected, treated and recirculated.

Pressure and flow

The key element of hydrodemolition is to pressurize and widen existing pores and micro cracks in the weakened concrete structure using high-pressure water penetration. Material is removed as the build-up pressure exceeds the tensile strength of the concrete. In addition to the water pressure, the volume of water also contributes to the system’s efficiency. The rate of removal, for example, depends not only on the water pressure but also on the amount of water directed towards the concrete surface in order to rapidly and continuously pressurize the areas being treated. This combination of water pressure and flow, together with the precise robotically controlled movements of the water jet nozzle, creates the necessary effect criteria for the hydrodemolition process.

The water jet penetrates existing cavities and cracks.

By exposing the concrete with the water jet for a certain time you reach the desired depth.

3

4

By changing the angle of the lance the remaining material under the rebar (the shadows) will be removed. With the EDS system the impact force of the water jet is maximized.

THE SUPERIOR METHOD

Hydrodemolition

Follow the flow at the jobsite Aquajet products is inspired by our customers and the problems they encounter that can be solved through new technology. When a customer comes to us with a jobsite challenge, we look to see if there’s a way to upgrade our equipment to solve the problem because other people are probably experiencing it, too. To help contractors maximize space and streamline logistics on urban jobsites, we ensure our equipment has a compact footprint. We offer the smallest hydrodemolition robot on the market — our Aqua Cutter 410 — as well as the larger, more versatile Aqua Cutter 710/750. Our high-pressure pumps, the Ecosilence Power Pack, and the EcoClear water treatment system each fit in an easily transportable standard, 20-foot shipping container. This allows operators to conserve space compared to other setups, which might involve several pieces of equipment spread across the jobsite. Meet the regulations The EcoClear can also help hydrodemolition contractors meet increasingly stringent water treatment regulations. The system treats collected wastewater after it’s generated by the hydrodemolition process by neutralizing water pH and greatly reducing the

12

suspended solids so that it can be safely released back into the environment or reused as part of a closed loop system. Until now, methods to treat wastewater on site were inefficient, took up too much space, or were simply unavailable. This led to significantly increased costs and logistical challenges. The EcoClear system enables hydrodemolition contractors to treat wastewater in real time and maintain an environmentally sound jobsite. Maximize productivity These units are fully automated, requiring minimal staffing for better workforce utilization. Along with our Aqua Cutter hydrodemolition robots and extensive line of attachments, they allow operations to maximize productivity on a range of applications from surface cleaning and preparation to removal and demolition.

The first step in the hydrodemolition process is to prepare to work safely. Make sure that the back side of the object that you are working on is cleared out and well protected. The water will have a speed of 400 to 750 meters per second. Compare that to a 9mm gun that has an exit speed of just over 350 meters per second.

The work place

Mark out a restricted perimeter by placing cones 25 meters to the left, 25 meters forward, 25 meters to the right, and 10 meters behind. Or you can shield off the robot with barriers if working close to live traffic, for example. Check that all the safety equipment is in place. Workers must wear personal protective equipment at all times when working with hydrodemolition machines. Finally, make sure that all the hoses and joints are in a good condition and never tighten a connection while it is pressurized. Aquajet offers a complete training program where you will learn all there is to know about all our equipment and how to use it safely and efficiently.

THE SUPERIOR METHOD

Hydrodemolition

The right equipment for the job To perform the very best hydrodemolition operation, you have to take in to consideration what type of hydrodemolition method that is most applicable. No matter if you have a preset deepth of concrete needed to be removed, a surface to be prepared for a new coat of material or if there’s need of rust removal - there’s always a solution with hydrodemolition. It all comes down to the pressure and flow of the water. Pressure vs Flow In short, when you use ultrahigh pressure and low flow you get a sharper and more precise cut. But when you have low pressure and high flow of water you get a selective removal, where only the bad concrete is removed and all good concrete is left intact. By changing the pressure and flow, and by using the correct equipment, you’ll get the job done both faster and better. Make the right choice All Power Pack´s have specific pressure and flow. To choose from example 100 l/min to 212 l/min is

14

not possible without doing alteration on your Power Pack, piston head, pistons and hoses. The unit also has to be re-calibrated with the new technical data. We therefore recommend choosing a unit which covers most of the tasks that you are planning to do. You can never take out more than rated pressure and flow but you can provide less by changing RPM and size of nozzle. Choosing the best hydrodemolition robot and accessories is just as important. Our Aqua Cutter robots, as well as Ergo systems, all provide a complete solution for the best possible performance and efficiency, whether it is concrete repair, surface treatment or industrial cleaning. Regardless of the task, we have a solution.

15

THE SUPERIOR METHOD

Hydrodemolition

Selective removal Selective removal is one of the basic principles of hydrodemolition. It means that you only remove the amount of concrete needed for the refurbishment. By using a lower water pressure (typically 1000 bar / 14 500 psi) the effect on the concrete will be selective. The sides and the bottom of the cut will be a little rough since it follows the quality of the concrete. The concrete will be removed where the quality is poor. The good concrete will be left undamaged. Robotic process: » 1000 – 1400 bar / 14 500 – 20 300 psi » 180 – 264 l / 48 – 70 gal of water Recommendation: » Aqua Cutter 410 / Aqua Cutter 710 / Aqua Cutter 750 » Ecosilence

Controlled depth removal / Hydromilling Controlled depth removal means that you use higher water pressure (2500 bar/36259 psi), that will have a more cutting effect on the concrete. The result will be more even both on the sides and the bottom of the cut. It will remove all that is set in the control system, regardless of the concrete quality. Robotic process: » 1500 – 3000 bar / 21 800 – 43 500 psi » 38 – 130 l / 10 – 35 gal of water Recommendation: » Aqua Cutter 410 / Aqua Cutter 710 / Aqua Cutter 750 » Ecosilence / Power Pack 270

Rust and paint removal High-pressure water can also be used to remove paint or rust, avoiding use of grid blasting. This means no dust pollution, no contaminated sand to dispose of, just a clean steel surface left after removal. Rubber coatings or rubber on, for example, airplane runways from the tires can also be removed. Robotic process: » 1000 – 3000 bar / 14 500 – 43 500 psi » 38 – 264 liters / 10 – 70 gal of water Recommendation: » Aqua Cutter 410 / Aqua Cutter 710 / Aqua Cutter 750 / Aqua Cutter PCM / Ergo go / Ergo Spine go » Rotolance / Ergo Rotolance / Aqua Spine / Aqua Centralizer » Ecosilence / Power Pack 270

16

Scarifying and surface preparation To make a god bounding on a surface for the new material you need to roughen up the old surface. If you want to make a good bounding surface but at the same time remove as little material as possible, the most effective way to do that is to use a rotolance. The Rotolance tool will produce precise and fast removal of a shallow concrete layer. And will leave a superior rough bonding surface, for a new coating. This is also the best and most efficient way to roughen a slippery concrete surface. Robotic process: » 1000 – 3000 bar / 14 500 – 43 500 psi » 38 – 264 liters / 10 – 70 gal of water Recommendation: » Aqua Cutter 410 / Aqua Cutter 710 / Aqua Cutter 750 / Aqua Cutter PCM / Ergo go / Ergo Spine go » Rotolance / Ergo Rotolance / Aqua Spine / Aqua Centralizer » Ecosilence / Power Pack 270

Industrial cleaning Traditional industrial cleaning has historically been carried out by handheld tools. This is a very dangerous operation and something that could be avoided by the use of robotic cleaning. More and more contractors are switching from manual to automated cleaning, increasing both safety and efficiency. Robotic process: » 1000 – 3000 bar / 14 500 – 43 500 psi » 38 – 264 liters / 10 – 70 gal of water Recommendation: » Aqua Cutter 410 / Aqua Cutter 710 / Aqua Cutter 750 / Aqua Cutter PCM / Ergo go / Ergo Spine go » Rotolance / Ergo Rotolance / Aqua Spine / Aqua Centralizer » Ecosilence / Power Pack 270

THE SUPERIOR METHOD

Hydrodemolition

A healthy way of work Taking responsibility for the impact of our products and services on people in their everyday lives is a key factor of our success. Hydrodemolition should always be safe, healthy and sustainable. Noisy, unwieldy and dangerous products are not our cup of tea. It’s the other way around. We care about you and the world around us. Noise has become a major concern on many jobsites. The negative effects of sound exposure on employees and the public has led to sound abatement practices in construction and demolition practices as contractors work to minimize noise pollution. Solving this problem was the driving factor behind our Ecosilence 3.0. By enclosing the high-pressure pump in a 20-foot shipping container with advanced sound-absorbing cassettes and an integrated muffler system, our engineers were able to greatly reduce decibels while the machine is in operation. We were also able to employ start/stop technology to improve fuel consumption for a greener machine overall. Aquajet’s products are designed to meet all possible needs and safety regulations. Our products provide the best possible performance and efficiently remove concrete in constant or variable thickness. Clear difference The presence of water is the very basics of hydrodemolition. Our customers use the power of water to remove deteriorated and damaged concrete in the safest and most efficient way possible, but there’s more to hydrodemolition than meets the eye. Hydrodemolition is also about protecting water and

18

discharging water back into the environment in a safe way. No pollution. No fuss. No remorse. The circle of water Our EcoClear is another example of Aquajet technology for a greener jobsite. There are several ways to handle wastewater from the hydrodemolition process — collecting and trucking it out, constructing a complicated homemade filtering system, or acquiring an OEM system. Onsite water treatment with an OEM system is the greenest and most cost effective. It minimizes fuel consumption and emissions. Be autonomous, not dangerous Furthermore, hydrodemolition is safer than any other concrete removal method due to its automatic nature. It basically eliminates manual labor from the picture, keeping the operator out of harm’s way. Our automated robots and fixed hydrodemolition equipment are always operated from a safe distance with a remote control. The operator at the site doesn’t have to worry about debris or projectiles flying around, nor dust pollution in the air or the potential risk of silicosis. With our innovation, Ergo Systems, you can also automate your sanitization operations and make your everyday work a whole lot easier, safer and faster.

AQUAJET TECHNOLOGY

Innovations

Infinity

oscillation system Infinity oscillation is a revolutionary technological advancement for concrete repair through hydrodemolition. The Infinity oscillation is an Aquajet patented innovation that makes the concrete removal process more efficient and with a much smoother surface as a result. The principle of hydrodemolition is to pressurize and widen existing pores and micro cracks in the weakened concrete structure using high-pressure water penetration. The high-pressure water is pushed through the nozzle of a lance, producing a water jet that penetrates the pores and builds up a pressure that causes the concrete to explode/separate. If the jet is standing still on the surface it is basically not removing any concrete at all, it will just dig a narrow hole. In order for the water jet to remove bad concrete over a larger area, the lance must move at a constant speed, relative to the surface, at all time. Both if the jet moves too slow, and also if it moves too fast, the performance decreases. This is why a rotating tool removes less m3/h than an oscillating nozzle. Standard oscillation To create that movement, an oscillating technique is usually used. Which means that the lance moves like a pendulum at the same time as the nozzle slides forward over the surface, hanging in a traverse. The pattern that’s created looks like a sine wave. With this technology however, an undesirable effect is that the speed of the lance over the surface becomes uneven in practice. The reason for this is that the lance will turn on its oscillation cycle and slow down the speed to zero before it turns the other director. Therefore, the speed is no longer constant and will result in different cutting depths inside each oscillation stroke and in worst case pipe holes. Infinity oscillation Our solution to the problem is the Infinity oscillation. By letting the lance move in a dual circular motion, instead of just a pendulum movement, while it oscillates, the shape of the infinity sign arises ... or the figure eight. This movement of the lance makes the speed of the oscillation constant across the surface

24

throughout the cycle, eliminating the effect of pipe holes. 2

2 1 1 3

3

When the roller is moving, the Infinity motion will add surface speed at 2 and subtract surface speed at 3. This will make a pattern looking more like a rounded square wave. Correct matched, the surface speed at 1,2 and 3 will be constant. The surface speed is an algorithm of roller speed, oscillation speed, oscillation stroke and infinity stroke. It is a quite delicate task to match, but don’t worry, the new Evolution 3.0 control system takes care of all these calculations automatically and makes sure that the surface speed is constant. Better effect The effect of the Infinity oscillation is a much smoother surface with significantly steeper and more even sides of the cut compared to the standard oscillation lance. Also, the speed of concrete removal is higher compared to previous technology thanks to the constant surface speed. And the difference gets bigger with each new traverse. Another interesting effect of the Infinity oscillation is the sound. Since the water jet continuously hits new material at the same speed, the pulsating sound is a lot less significant. The new sound is more constant. Or infinite. A sign of efficiency, as the hydrodemolition process is ongoing all the time without interruption.

Benefits with the Infinity » No pipe holes » Higher performance » Adjustible stroke both directions » Primary 0-110mm » Secondary 0-50mm » Easy access to stroke adjustment » Center bolt lance » Lower high-pressure hose mounting point creates less stress on the hose » Compact and simple design

Aquajet calculator Like all other successful construction work, the use of hydrodemolition requires meticulous planning and preparation. To make your work a little easier, we created a tool to calculate capacity, water flow, speed and pressure, and reaction forces. The calculator can be used directly in a browser or be downloaded for free from the App Store or Google Play. The Aquajet calculator has lots of measurable functions for you to manage. All gathered in one place. Capacity calculator By inserting pump data, nozzle size, concrete quality, cutting depth and robot type, the Capacity calculator provides an estimate of the cutting capacity. The result of the calculation will show a chart with an upper and a lower limit for the type of cutting performance you can expect. It will also calculate the high-pressure pumps power consumption and the amount of water required for each qubic meter (m3) of concrete removed. Nozzle calculator Depending on the parameters you set, you can easily calculate the size, pressure and flow of your nozzles, as well as have full control over water speed, reaction forces and energy consumption. Hose calculator Calculate pressure drop in your high-pressure hoses. This function will tell you both the pressure drop

36

and the speed of water inside the hose, as well as the power loss created by the pressure drop. It also supports multiple parallel hoses. Settings The Aquajet Calculator works seamless with both Metric and US units. Custom nozzle factors and pump efficiency factors are also available. Other functions We attach importance to accessibility, where you can easily reach us both by phone and email. You also get an overview of our products, news and application examples.

EDS Equal distance system All our Aqua Cutter robots feature our patented EDS system, short for Equal Distance System. The EDS keeps a preset distance from the nozzle to the concrete surface, regardless of the attack angle of the water jet. This is a major advantage. Standard systems without EDS make the water jet lose a lot of power before it hits the concrete. With a standard system the distance from the nozzle to the concrete can vary up to 250 mm (10”), depending on the attack angle of the nozzle. With the EDS you have the same distance to the surface during the whole operation. The removal of concrete above the rebar is relatively easy. The EDS also provides higher removal rate below the rebar compared to other control systems on the market. All together, the EDS provide higher efficiency and productivity, more concrete removal per pump hour, energy and fuel savings, controllable removal and better removal around the rebar.

38

ISC Intelligent sensing control Intelligent Sensing Control, ISC, uses intelligent software operating via closed loop systems that continuously memorizes the movements of the water jet. It also monitors the process from the operator’s settings. The system is standard on all Aqua Cutter robots as well as the Ergo unit, used for controlling the Aqua Spine. The ISC is easy to program and enables trouble free basic operations. Basically it gives you less downtime and no cables to cope with.

SLT Smart lance technology All Aqua Cutter robots with the Evolution control system have the patented Smart lance software. With the software you get access to advantages that no other robot offers. The Smart lance technology automatically calculates and coordinates the complete operating process and optimizes the removal from the operator’s selection. All you have to do is to set a few parameters. The Smart lance software can handle up to four different water jet attack angles before the robot indexes. It can handle a two level cut in one operation and read, as well as display, the rate in real time. Furthermore, it enables you to store removal rates, save your programming and cut geometrical shapes. It also has a self-diagnostic fail-safe system. In case of any errors, the fail system will display all interruptions in the process with warnings and a recommended solution. Smart lance control also compensates for fluctuating operational parameters causes by ambient temperature changes. The software gives you excellent communications with the operator, higher efficiency and more removal per operating hour – every day in every operation.

SIX STEPS OF HYDRODEMOLITION Aquajet Academy

A safe way of working Safety is one of our main priorities. All our products are designed to meet, and more than satisfy, the latest safety regulations on the market. Also, transferring the safety thinking to our customers and to construction sites is a key factor in achieving a safe workplace. Therefore, we’ve created the Aquajet Academy and the ”Six steps of education”. Our Aqua Cutter robots are state of the art equipment. However, to gain its full potential Aquajet offers a wide training program for operators. By taking part in this training you will be ready to take on the most challenging jobs with your Aqua Cutter, and most important, be safe while doing so. This is Aquajet Academy In addition to the product course that’s been an option when buying our equipment, we wanted to offer our customers a more extensive training program to really cover all aspects. That’s why the Aquajet Academy was created, and the six steps of education. With this we can offer our customers, and distributors, a more comprehensive range of courses. The course program we offer consists of six separate parts; Products, Hydrodemolition, Stream-

42

lining of work, Safety & technique, Service and Train the trainer. Six steps of education These different parts cover handling and maintenance training for our equipment, efficiency with hydrodemolition, workplace safety, high-pressure and safety in order to understand the regulations and laws that regulate the use of high-pressure equipment. We also teach our customers the basics of high-pressure pumps, hoses, tools and how to calculate pressure loss in hoses and the correct nozzle size. All training courses are adapted to the customers knowledge and experience level along with what type of equipment being used. A certificate of approval will be issued to each participant who completes a training course.

Six steps of education 1. Products - 2 days

4. Safety & technique - 1 day

During this course you will get to know your machine inside out, one of Aquajet’s instructors will walk you through the components, settings and the program of the machine. This training is divided into two parts; one practical and one theoretical. The practical part is more hands on, where you learn to maneuver and set up the machine, while the theoretical part includes watching our instruction film and looking deeper into the manual. Both parts are essential for getting full gain of what you can make the product do. The training is ended with a small test to ensure the operator have fully understood all information.

Maybe the most important part of the training program. Hydrodemolition involves highly pressurized water exiting the nozzle in supersonic speed, and therefore, it’s important that the operator is aware of the power and risks surrounding the worksite when working with hydrodemolition. This course will teach you how to calculate pressure and flow, consider reaction force and different techniques to get the job done in a safe and efficient way.

2. Hydrodemolition - 2 days During this training course we focus on concrete removal by hydrodemolition, with high precision and as efficient as possible. You will be guided in the settings of the program and robot, learn how the different features can be of help to you, as well as looking at the work site and how to make it a safe and effective place for work.

3. Streamlining of work - 2 days This training is adapted to your specific needs. We come to your work site and help you to get efficient in a safe way, and by that, also minimize the wear of your equipment.

5. Service - 1 day This is the training course for the mechanic taking care of the Aqua Cutter robot. Aquajet’s instructor will walk you through the machines components and show you how to maintain and adjust all parts so that your Aqua Cutter will keep performing on top for a long time.

6. Train the trainer - 3 days This is the course for you who already is one of Aquajet’s partners/distributor. You will first go through the considered training program and then perform a training for an operator together with one of Aquajet’s instructors. In the end you will be certified as an Aquajet instructor and be able to yourself hold courses.

Hydrodemolition

Location: Cement plant silo, La Robla, Spain Material removed: 1,440 m (4,725 ft) Equipment: Ergo go, high-pressure pump

Repair of

cement plant silo Spanish contractor Fixen Structural Services used the Hydrodemolition method to successfully repair an aging cement plant silo within a tight deadline. The reinforced concrete lining of the 100-meter tall vessel was crumbling, so the structure needed internal strengthening to correct the problem and allow a higher filling level. The lower portion had been repaired two years earlier using hand lances and standard scaffolding; however, the aggressive timeline to complete the upper repair called for a faster, more innovative method. That’s when Fixen proposed a robotic solution to get the job done during a four week maintenance shutdown. Using the Aquajet Ergo, hanging scaffolding and a hoist, the contractor achieved a production

48

rate of 1 meter per minute, removing two 45-meter vertical sections of concrete each day. After the concrete was removed, they installed new anchored stirrups and filled the section with fluid mortar by form-and-pump means. “Hydrodemolition with the Ergo Go really exceeded our expectations and allowed us to raise our standard in terms of planning, accuracy and performance optimization,” said Jose Rodriguez, COO of Fixen Structural Services. “It took more time to move the scaffolding system than to remove the concrete.” A crew of two removed a total of 1,440 meters of concrete and finished the job with two days to spare.

Location: Tunnel, Zemst, Belgium Material removed: 42 m3 (1483 ft3) Equipment: Aqua Cutter 710V, high-pressure pump

Speedy

tunnel repair Hompert-Renes B.V., a Netherlands-based Hydrodemolition contractor, was tasked with an urgent tunnel repair in February 2021. The tunnel, which ran under a busy railroad, was becoming a safety hazard because deteriorating concrete was falling into the roadway. The initial scope of the project was to remove 6-7 cm of concrete across 80% of the tunnel. Once the team started, they learned the amount of weakened concrete was more extensive and it was necessary to remove 100% from the walls and ceiling.

The experienced team from Hompert-Renes B.V. used an Aqua Cutter 710 Evo to make quick work of the project, removing a total of 42 cubic meters in just two weeks despite frigid temperatures and travel challenges from the global pandemic. Using Aquajet’s industry-leading technology, the contractor was able to prioritize efficiency and go above and beyond the original requirements.

Location: Parking garage, Toronto, Ontario, Canada Material removed: Estimated 18,581 m2 (200,000 ft2) Water treated: Estimated 38 million liters (10 million gallons) Equipment: Aqua Cutter 710V, EcoClear, Ecosilence

Eco-friendly restoration of

parking garage With decades of experience in new construction and commercial renovation, general contractor and construction manager Arguson Projects Inc. understood the logistical challenges posed by a multi-year, multi-million dollar parking garage renovation in Toronto’s East End. The 39-year-old structure — an open-air parkade with a roof deck, two suspended slabs and asphalt on grade — needed to remain open while crews

removed 18,581 m2 (200,000 ft2) of material from the second and third levels. Building tenants required parking to remain open, as well as continued access to the roof deck, which provided amenities for employees. The work was executed with an Aqua Cutter 710V, Ecoclear and an Ecosilence high-pressure pump from Aquajet.

Under pier

concrete removal At the harbor in Oslo, Skanska AS Norway is performing a major renovation of the structural parts of a 4000 m2 (43055 ft2) large pier. A dangerous and seemingly impossible operation due to tide and an inaccessible subsurface working area. But with the help from Aquajet Systems, the impossible is made possible. The massive project at the Pipervika quay in Oslo, Norway, is undertaken by Skanska AS. Under the large pier Skanska AS discovered extreme damages in the structural bearing parts. That’s bad news in itself. Furthermore, most parts are inaccessible

for large demolition robots. Above all, the pier is an unsafe environment for Skanska’s workers, due to tide and subsurface concrete removal. Something extraordinary had to be done to avoid dangerous, time consuming and hard manual labor. For the job at hand Skanska chose the Aqua Cutter 410A with a disconnectable power control module (PCM), in combination with a Power Pack Ecosilence, by Aquajet Systems. Making it possible to send the tracked crawler down under the pier to work, at the same time as the PCM was safely positioned above on the pier.

Hydrodemolition

Location: Bridge pylons, St Petersburg, Russia Material removed: Estimated 7,2 m2 (77 ft2) / pylon Equipment: Aqua Cutter 410A and 710V, Aqua Spine

Restoration of

bridge pylons ICA Construction of St Petersburg used two Aqua Cutters to clear concrete from the top of a 120 m high bridge pylon for a bridge across the River Neva, at St Petersburg in Russia. For this project an Aqua Spine from Aquajet was used, which is the most effective and flexible equipment you can find in the market for this type of job. It is easy to build the system in the size needed by using the multimodular Aqua Spine.

52

The height of the area to be removed was 10 m so the Aqua Spine was assembled in the same length. The Aqua Spine mast was lifted in place and bolted onto each side of the pylon. An Aqua Cutter 410A was used as the Power Control Unit to control the Aqua spine. The Power Pack was placed at the bottom of the pylon and a 120 m long high-pressure hose was used to access the working area.

Location: I-70, Utah, USA Material removed: 2523 m3 (3300 yd3) Water treated: 3,8 million liters (1 million gallons) Equipment: Aqua Cutter 710V

Hydrodemolition

bridge repair The project was the largest hydrodemolition undertaking in the state’s history. With a number of bridge decks on I-70 between Cove Fort and Sevier showing signs of significant wear, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) knew they were looking at a major repair operation. The 20mile project included replacing the deck concrete on 14 parallel bridges to extend the life of the structures and provide a better driving surface. Redi Services kicked off the I-70 project in April 2018 with three Aquajet Aqua Cutter 710V robots. Using three robots simultaneously, crews spaced the Aqua Cutters about 6 m (20 ft) apart to remove the top 10

cm (4 in) of the 20 cm (8 in) bridge deck concrete. They left 2,5 cm (1in) between the remaining concrete and the rebar. Together, the robots removed about 46 m3 (60 yd3) of concrete a day. Each machine jetted about 91,000 l (24,000 gal) of water per 10hour shift. “The technique was extremely effective,” said Cody Austin, Redi Services Nevada area manager. “With chipping tools there is no way to know whether you are through all of the decomposed concrete. With these robots, the removal depth is always even. Plus, there’s almost no risk of damage to the rebar or the structurally sound concrete.”

AQUAJET APPLICATIONS

Hydrodemolition

Location: Heating plant boiler, Sweden Material removed: Heat lining Equipment: Ergo go

Heat plant boiler

refractory removal The task at hand at this work site is to remove the heat lining inside a heating plant boiler. The lining must be replaced gradually in 5-years intervals. The heating plant is supplying an entire city of 225 000 people with district heating and is also generating electric power. By using the safe and automated Ergo system, no hand lance work was needed. The different parts of the Ergo system was easily carried into the boiler and mounted to the existing scaffoldings. These scaffoldings was already built inside for the re-casting of the new heat lining and the Ergo climber system could use these to work from.

54

One Ergo system started from the top of the boiler and one from the bottom, each powered by a high pressure pump. The two Ergo controllers was placed outside the boiler and the hydraulic hoses routed into a small manhole. With the graphic display on the radio remote control, the operator could control and adjust the parameters without leaving the working area. The downtime of the plant was significantly shortened thanks to the fact that the operation was automated and that the Ergo system can handle much higher reaction forces compared to hand lance. The complete job was finished in just one week.

Location: Keeyask Generating Station, Manitoba, Canada Material removed: 140 m3 (4944 ft3) of concrete Water treated: Estimated 5,016 m3 (1,325,000 gallons) Equipment: Aqua Cutter 710V, EcoClear

Concrete removal with

water recycling More than 400 miles north of Winnipeg, the Keeyask Generation Project is being constructed on the lower Nelson River. The 695-megawatt hydroelectric generating station, scheduled for completion in 2021, will be a source of renewable energy, producing an average of 4,400 gigawatt hours of electricity each year. The energy produced will be integrated into Manitoba Hydro’s electric system for use in Manitoba and to export to other jurisdictions. Throughout its construction, now in its seventh year, the project has managed a number of location-specific challenges. One such challenge occurred in 2017 when water in a 61 cm (24 inch) pipe in the intake froze, dama-

ging an 2,4 m (8 ft) thick concrete pier. To minimize impact to the overall project, Keeyask managers opted to use hydrodemolition to remove the damaged section. Water Blasting & Vacuum Services Inc., a Canadian industrial cleaning specialist, secured the contract based on a plan that provided not only the efficiency to complete the 140 m3 (4,944 ft3) removal work on time, but recycled nearly 80% of the water. With Aquajet’s industry-leading technology, combined with years of experience, Water Blasting & Vacuum Services pushed the boundaries of Hydrodemolition to work deeper and cleaner than any Canadian project to date.

AQUA CUTTER 750V Hydrodemolition robot

Revolutionary efficiency Aqua Cutter 750V is our new “Mean Machine” with breakthrough technology in performance and efficiency. The precision is refined and controlled down to every single sequence and every single millisecond of the hydrodemolition process. The new patented Infinity system together with the next generation Evolution control system brings out the best possible results from the machine, making you and your new robot an unbeatable team.

76

The Aqua Cutter 750V features Aquajet’s revolutionary patented Infinity oscillation system and the next generation Evolution Control System that automatically calculates optimal settings for oscillation. The new oscillation moves the water jet in an infinity pattern, removing more concrete in a single pass while reducing shadowing, eliminating the risk of pipe holes and providing an ideal bonding surface. A new level of performance The 750V also offers a new level of performance with Aquajet’s Precision Drive. This technology provides highly accurate hydraulic movements, eliminating the inconsistencies that would compromise the result. Automatic speed-controlled throttle, that automatically adapts RPMs to the load, improves the sustainability and leads to lower fuel consumption and emissions. Which, together with the oscillation pattern, results in a constant, low noise that is less disruptive and meets strict requirements in noise-sensitive environments. In addition, the Evolution 3.0 control system incorporates several safety and efficiency features to maximize performance, such as remote start and stop of the diesel engine through radio remote control and an automatic main switch that triggers an automatic machine shut down if there’s no activity for a certain amount of time. It also uses a visual status light to show the state of the machine with different colors.

ERGO GO

Hydrodemolition robot

Compact hydrodemolition system The Ergo Go is a revolutionary alternative in industrial cleaning, surface preparation and concrete repair applications where a compact hydrodemolition system is required. The Ergo Controller offers four times the power of a hand lance in a compact unit. It provides the maneuverability and power to keep workers out of harm’s way during hazardous cleaning applications in oil, gas, refractory and other industries.

78

Hydrodemolition robots, such as the Ergo Go system, remove decayed concrete and built-up materials to a preset depth consistently. Using a number of productivity-enhancing attachments, contractors can remotely operate the Ergo system for efficient work in confined spaces. Highly adaptive The Ergo Go incorporates the controller unit, which powers and controls the hydraulics; the Ergo power head, which manipulates the high-pressure lance; and the climber, which are a unique system used to support and maneuver the power head, based on project needs. The climber attaches to any standard scaffolding or pipes and robotically moves along it to deliver powerful hydrodemolition forces for removal of materials such as paint, rubber coatings, petroleum products, rust and decayed concrete in a number of vertical vessels. The Ergo System also works with any of two attachments in the Ergo Rotolance series for improved capabilities in confined or hard to reach places.

CIRCULAR POWER HEAD Aqua Cutter 410V/710V/ Aqua Spine

System for removal on pillars and columns The Circular power head (CPH) is a 360° ring in two half pieces that can be wrapped around concrete pillars of nearly any diameter. It enables the Aqua Cutter robot to operate on a pillar without moving. In many cases, it’s an invaluable asset that makes your work significantly easier.

90

The roller travels at a preset distance from one side of the pillar to the other by the robots control system. When the required depth is reached, the head moves upwards or downwards depending on the preset direction. Up, down and around The CPH is attached to the Aqua Cutter hydrodemolition robot with its centre displaced from the turn plate. This allows the CPH to reach the top of the pillars before the tower hoist reaches the underside of a bridge or a ceiling of an enclosure, such as a parking garage or factory. When the CPH is rotated 180° it’s possible to cut below grade. The offset distance can be extended for deeper below grade requirements.

92

The Aqua Centralizer can operate both in horizontal tunnels or vertical/inclined tunnels where it can be positioned with a hoist device. The power head and ring assembly indexes automatically along the spine rail to complete a whole tunnel section. Adjustable lance angle With the 25° adjustable lance angle and adjustable stroke of oscillation, the head can be reversed to handle both inside pipes and outside pillars if used on the Circular Power Head. The power head is easy to attach to the ring curved rail and is secured with one single bolt. The Spine roller is attached to the Spine rail in the same way. Support wheels and Spine system Tripple support wheels that centers itself and crank handle with two gear ratios, low and high. Centralizer support fits in tunnels with diameters 1,5-3,0 meters. The base of the Aqua Centralizer is the triple rail from the Aqua Spine system, which means it can be built up to 6 meters between the two centralizer supports. The Triple rail can also be mounted in front of the support to reach all the way into a dead end of a pipe.

Extra receiver for connected controls An extra receiver can be added to the robot’s radio remote control, allowing both Ecosilence and Aqua Cutter to be connected to each other and to the operator via the radio remote control. Simple and with no need for extra cables or devices. Provides full control over both units in an easy and safe way. Through the remote control you can turn the high-pressure ON/OFF and emergency stop both units, as well as see and change the settings of pressure and engine rpm. Kit dump valve When flow from the high-pressure pump is too high for the tool, a dump valve can be used to route some of the high-pressure water back to the water tank. Kit dump gun A mechanical dump gun is available for high-pressure cleaning to dump the water at shut down. It doesn’t need an electric remote cable and can be used for all brands of pump units.

Inlet pressure reducing valve, max 40 bar Placed on the water inlet coupling, this optional feature reduces inlet water pressure from a maximum of 40 bar down to 4-6 bar, allowing for proper function of the inlet valve. This option is recommended for situations when the connection to the water supply exceeds maximum inlet pressure to the unit. Check valve An optional valve that closes the water passage from the booster pump when high-pressure water is not activated – such as while idling. With this option, no water comes out of the nozzle during idle. Filter differential pressure monitoring With this optional function, you get a warning if any water filter needs to be replaced. Air kit with airgun Optional air compressor unit, 230V, for the workbench. Only available with the Electric kit 400/230 VAC. Comfort wall with sliding doors An optional wall with sliding doors to separate the pump and engine compartment from the workspace to isolate both sound and heat. Spark arrestor Optional spark extinguisher for ex-classified areas. Spark arrestor is mounted on top of the container and can be removed for transport. Shut down valve Shuts off the intake air when the engine is switched off in the event of flammable gases.

120

Foot pedal Revo The foot pedal Revo is used when the operator needs to have both hands free. The pressure is activated when pedal is pushed and de-activated when pedal is released. It comes with an emergency stop box and includes a 10m cable. Not for robot operation. Emergency stop box Revo The emergency stop box Revo is used as an extra emergency stop. If needed, multiple emergency stop boxes can be placed along the remote cable. The kit includes an emergency stop and 1m cable. Complete dosing system A complete dosing system for measuring and correcting water conductivity is available as an option. If the water conductivity is too low (water too hard) the piston seal assembly can be destroyed. This applies to high pressure pumps with tungsten carbide plunger seal sets. The dosing system adds a sodium carbonate solution to the water to keep conductivity at a proper level.

Automated water treatment system It’s easy to see why concrete repair contractors are turning more and more to robotic hydrodemolition. The method provides fast, safe and efficient concrete removal. But, as governing bodies and project managers step up environmental regulations to protect communities and ecosystems, one important question remains — “What do you do with the wastewater?”

124

The Ecoclear water treatment system is a state-of-the-art solution dedicated for filtering hydrodemolition wastewater on a completely new level. Ecoclear enables the operator to safely discharge water back into the environment or recirculate it back to the robot – without the need of an extra water reservoir, without the use of filters of any kind – and without pollution. Perfect for your operation, amazing for the environment. Green, lean, cleaning machine In order to make this piece of water wonder work, the Ecoclear uses flocculation technology to remove the maximum amount of sludge from the water. With Ecoclear you can neutralize elevated alkaline pH levels down to pH 6-9 while you have full control of the turbidity levels down to 20-40 mg particles per liter. The treatment unit is operator friendly, allowing you to take care of all particle sizes and weights. The whole process is easily monitored online and with the RECO control system. All in all, Ecoclear is unique on the water treatment market, and truly state of the art. ECOCLEAR 20 2.0

Water treatment system

How the Ecoclear works Aquajet’s Ecoclear water treatment system solves the problem of what to do with water used in the hydrodemolition process. Treated water can be discharged into the environment or recirculated back to the robot, eliminating the need for a constant fresh water source or a third-party to collect and remove water. One of the key differences that sets the Ecoclear apart from other OEM and advanced water treatment systems is the use of carbon dioxide, rather than mineral acid, to reduce pH levels. Handling any acid requires special training and PPE. There is also a risk of acidifying water if acid levels are not precisely calculated. CO2, on the other hand, makes it virtually impossible to acidify the water. This method doesn’t leave any hazardous byproducts, either. For bottom-line-conscious contractors, CO2 also has another advantage over other OEM systems. CO2 is four to eight times less expensive than commonly used acids for pH reduction. Clear Results In the end, though, it’s not only about what you can do, but what you can prove. Government agencies

126

and project managers require documentation. That’s why the Ecoclear provides detailed, real-time data through the RECO control system. This information can be shared with project stakeholders to provide insight to the properties of the discharged water, including pH levels and the amount of water that was treated. Clear Choice As hydrodemolition contractors look to remain competitive amid fluctuating environmental regulations, partnering with a cutting-edge manufacturer can provide a compact, cost-effective solution that increases sustainability — with the documentation to back it all up.

The Ecoclear process

The EcoClear goes to work, pumping collected water into an inlet chamber (#1), where a flocculating agent is automatically added to help clump the particles in the water. The water then flows into a second chamber (#2) that introduces carbon dioxide to neutralize the pH. In the next chamber (#3), the floc, or solid particles, settles into a storage hopper (#4) and is removed by the integrated pump. The water continues to another chamber (#5) for a second pH adjustment. A final monitoring tank (#6) confirms the water pH has returned to the desired set point before it’s discharged.

Recirculation of water

The Hydrodemolition process starts with fresh water (#1) pumped into a tank. A drain pump in the tank transfers water (#2) to the Power Pack. From there, a high-pressure hose carries water to the Aqua Cutter robot (#3) that blasts away deteriorated concrete or other material. Dirty water is then collected in an embankment where another drain pump carries it to the EcoClear (#4). Once the water is treated and returned to a neutral pH level, it drains into a catch tank (#5) where it can be pumped back into the fresh-water tank (#6), where the process starts over. Sludge from the water treatment process is pumped out (#7) and can be collected or recirculated back with the wastewater.
