A JOURNEY OF A THOUSAND MILES MUST BEGIN WITH A SINGLE STEP As I write this piece, it’s in my sixth working day of my new role as Managing Director, UK Trading Groups and, as you know, I’m following in the footsteps of Jim who held the position for eleven years, growing the business, expanding the membership and delivering a huge array of added value programs for the group. It’s exciting, exhilarating and, I’ll admit, a little bit frightening.

I join at a time when our industry is going through an immense amount of change, from increasing complexity of vehicle technology, consolidation of major distribution companies, globalisation of the International Trading Groups to the growing influence of emerging countries in the manufacturing and distribution processes.

The pace of change seems relentless. Of course, one can never survive without change and there are certain circumstances that present us with opportunity to embrace change and put that to positive use. With that in mind, whilst I know it’s with a sense of sadness that we say farewell to Jim and thank him for his contribution over the last eleven years, I’m also sure we can use this point as a trigger and stimulation towards further development and growth of our mutual business.

So, as I come to the end of my sixth day, I am truly aware this first, single, step is the one that begins my journey of a thousand miles.

As I sign off, I leave you with a thought. Even when looking back with a sense of pride, the past should be celebrated and remembered but cannot be changed. By embracing change, the strength to complete our future journey is still in our power.

ROY HUBBARD MOTORS ADDRESS THE CHALLENGES OF USING A PASS THRU SYSTEM GRAHAM PACKER FROM ROY HUBBARD MOTORS IN MARKET HARBOROUGH SHARES HIS EXPERIENCE USING A PASS THRU SYSTEM WITH FELLOW GARAGES, IN THE HOPE THAT ONE DAY A COMPLETE PRODUCT WILL BE ADOPTED BY THE UK MARKET. "As a technician and a garage owner, the ever increasing speed of technology in the motor industry is both worrying and exciting. As a vehicle becomes just a group of computers on wheels, the technical challenges are ever growing.

"As an independent, I found myself alone in the process of setting up any Pass Thru system. The first challenge was to buy the right device, on looking around I decided to select the CarDAQ Plus, a robust and quality unit and though it is an American targeted product, this was actually the easy bit, as we all know when it comes to vehicle manufacturers it is going to be hard work. One thing that has shocked me is the diversity of the help manufacturers give; on one end of the scale we have Vauxhall who have made a very easy and cheap portal to use, then we have Volvo and BMW that make you jump through hoops and keep moving the goal posts at the other end.

"So, in a nutshell what ‘could’ be an easy money earning venture usually ends up with days spent installing software and waiting for technical support to contact you when it does not work!"

"I see two main reasons why Pass Thru has not been taken up by the industry:1) The price of using dealer systems - with no universal software in place, the cost of setup for an independent garage can be quite time consuming and costly because of no clear setup path.

2) The risk of failure - no garage owner wants to brick an ECU and have it stuck in the garage with the customer going nuts!

“Looking to America, I found a complete system geared up and supported, helping independent garages to meet the challenges faced by this. A universal programming interface would be ideal to simplify the training needed and a uniform paying structure, so all manufacturers for emissions based programming have to set a standard charge.

“All this could move towards a more streamlined simpler process which one day could be included in the MOT. But as we stand we have a disjointed, complex specialist system that does nothing for the environment that it was intended to help.

“This technology is only in its infancy and I predict we will see a rise in the amount of programming needed as manufacturers integrate more complex systems into our vehicles.

“Because of the lack of help or training in this area, garages are not able to venture in to this area and potential business in being lost. I call out to our members, garages, MPs and the IMI to urge the manufacturers involved and force a solution that will enable the independent garage owners to compete.“ The time is NOW, let’s work together to force a change in the market.

GL MOTOR FACTORS HOST TECHNICAL EVENING AT PLATINUM BATTERIES GL Motor Factors of Bolton hosted a technical evening at Platinum Batteries head office just outside of Bolton in Trafford Park, Manchester; the evening was a brilliant turnout with 38 people in attendance.

Keith Marley and Alex Phillips from Platinum Batteries spoke about Stop/Start batteries, AGM batteries, testing procedures and changing

technology in new age vehicles.

The garages then had a tour of the distribution centre and gained useful insight in to how the batteries should be stored. Following the positive feedback GL have received on the back of this event, they’ve made plans to hold more technical evenings for their customers in the future.

AUTOCARE REGIONAL MEETINGS IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN WHEN THE AUTOCARE REGIONAL MEETINGS ARE HELD AT 11 VENUES ACROSS THE UK. ATTENDANCE HAS BEEN EXCELLENT AT EACH OF THE MEETINGS FROM BOTH AUTOCARE GARAGES AND GROUPAUTO MEMBERS ALIKE. The meetings are a great opportunity for the garage delegates to meet with other garages that are part of the network and share ideas and thoughts with each other in an informal environment.

The format of the meetings this year consisted of an update on AutoCare including new initiatives, followed by an overview on technical training from eXponentia. Delphi then presented Telematics, as well as information for independent garages on how they can service vehicles that require stamps via Digital Service Records. Finally there was an update on activity within the Approved Garages network followed by a question and answer forum.

AutoCare Network Manager, Maria McCullough added, “I would like to thank all attendees that gave up their time to attend these meetings; it is much appreciated and really helps to strengthen our network. The meetings give garages the opportunity to ask questions and share feedback and they are a great way for new garages to put a face to a name.”

MOTORCARE TRADE SHOW BIGGER AND BETTER THAN 2014 RECORD NUMBERS ATTEND MOTORCARE’S ANNUAL TRADE SHOW, Months of planning and hard work culminated on the evening of the 15th October for Motorcare’s second Annual Trade Show. The GROUPAUTO member who has four branches based in Herefordshire and South Wales chose the market town of Abergavenny, Gwent for a second year due to its central location and accessibility for their customers.

General Sales Manager, Neil Millbery commented ,“Because of the success of our show in 2014 which attracted over 500 guests, the 2015 show had to be bigger and better than ever. Hence why the strap line ‘Bigger and better than 2014!’ was created and used in the lead up to the event on all marketing material including postcards, invitations and adverts - a constant reminder of what we were expecting to deliver.”

Trade Show organisers Tomkinson Smith were instructed back in October 2014 and their professionalism and knowledge without doubt attributed to the success of this year’s show. Neil added, “The lessons learned and experienced gained in 2014 provided a blueprint on how to increase the guest numbers. But on the night of course there are absolutely no guarantees!”

As the bookings came in, potential guest numbers suggested that the event may have outgrown the venue already. A 20 metre marquee was positioned to the rear of the Market Hall venue to accommodate both the hog roast and the bar, creating the additional room required for guests and additional supplier stands in the main trade hall.

Neil recalls, “It was 6:00pm on the night of the trade show and everything was in place - 56 supplier exhibitor stands, 108 supplier representatives, 40 Motorcare staff inside the

venue and 10 outside, directing traffic to the car parks - fingers tightly crossed!”

Neil and his team can now relax as the show really did live up to its name. Over 700 guests attended, 850 hog roasts were served and many more beverages enjoyed. More connections were made between suppliers and customers in four hours than could have been achieved in several months of workouts.

“I'd just like to take this opportunity to thank our suppliers for their commitment, our fantastic staff who were integral in the preparation and set up of the event and who continued working into the early hours of the morning to reinstall the market stalls. The biggest thank you is to our customers who took the time to attend and ultimately made our trade show bigger and better than 2014.”

AUTOPARTS CUMBRIA EMBRACE HYBRID TECHNOLOGY FOLLOWING ON FROM A SUCCESSFUL TECHNICAL EVENING, GROUPAUTO MEMBER OF THE YEAR(UNDER £3M) AUTOPARTS CUMBRIA RAN THEIR LATEST TECHNICAL TRAINING COURSE AT KENDAL COLLEGE IN CUMBRIA. ACROSS TWO DAYS IN OCTOBER STEVE CARTER OF EXPONENTIA HOSTED TWO TRAINING DAYS ON HYBRID TECHNOLOGY, HYBRID SYSTEMS 1 AND 2 WITH IMI LEVEL 2 AND 3 QUALIFICATIONS RESPECTIVELY. As per the eXponentia course outline, the aim of these two days of training was to provide candidates with the required knowledge to recognise the name and components of the hybrid system, check the functioning of the hybrid system, work safely on systems not related to the hybrid system and be able to carry out the proper maintenance on hybrid vehicles.

The course also awarded candidates QCF Level 2 and 3 IMI qualification on Hybrid Electric Vehicle Operation, Maintenance, Electric Vehicle Repair and Component Replacement. A qualification, whilst not yet mandatory in this country, is a legal requirement should a technician want to repair any hybrid or electric vehicle across Europe.

The course has definitely helped remove this fear and I have had several of the garages that attended the course tell me that they intend on advertising that they can now repair hybrid and electric vehicles. ” Trevor continued, “We now have the nice problem of having to organise a further course as due to positive word of mouth and garages wanting to send other technicians for Hybrid Training I have further customers wanting to attend the same course.”

“I would like to thank all those that were open minded enough to attend and Steve Carter from eXponentia for lending his expertise not only for the course itself but for the technical evening he originally presented at, without which we would not have generated the interest to run the training courses at Kendal college.”

Autoparts Cumbria had been wanting to run this course for some time and they weren’t disappointed. The two days were fully booked and the feedback Trevor Nicholson, owner of Autoparts Cumbria, has received back from his customers that attended the training has been excellent.

PURCHASING UPDATE FIRST AND FOREMOST, WE WOULD LIKE TO BEGIN BY THANKING THE 284 MEMBERS THAT HAVE SUPPORTED THE G-LOGIX WAREHOUSE DURING 2015, THE LOYALTY DEMONSTRATED BY OUR MEMBERS IS ALWAYS VALUED AND CANNOT BE TAKEN FOR GRANTED. We are pleased to report that G-Logix is on course to achieve another record year, with sales looking increasingly likely to exceed £11 million and a performance figure to match, of over 30% up year on year.

However it’s not all about the numbers; the feedback and support we receive from the membership is priceless! It allows us to identify where we need to improve in order to develop as a business, thus improving the service and offering we provide back to members.

It’s fair to say that 2015 has been one of the busiest periods in recent times for the wider business; and a significant proportion of the Purchasing team’s focus this year has been spent negotiating supplier terms following the UAN acquisition. The overall benefit to GROUPAUTO members is huge and these improvements will become tangible once members receive their Q4 rebate packet, which should a little heavier than originally forecasted.

Rest assured that the work does not stop here and a strict supplier review schedule for 2016 is already in place, to build and maintain the improvements members have received this year.

The performance of the group this year is extremely encouraging with members’ purchases up year on year; to put that into perspective, the growth performance is more than double that of the previous two years!

This year we have experienced growth on all key product groups and we are confident that the enhanced terms negotiated this year will provide members with the ammunition needed to continue this positive trend in 2016.

As a final note, we would like to wish all members a cold, frosty and fruitful winter; which we hope will include some well-deserved respite over the Christmas period to recharge those batteries.

BOSWELL: TELEMATICS TELEMATICS IS SOMETIMES DESCRIBED AS A ‘SILVER BULLET’ FOR FLEET RISK MANAGEMENT. WITH TELEMATICS TECHNOLOGY CONSTANTLY DEVELOPING AND COSTS DECREASING, MORE AND MORE VEHICLES ARE BEING FITTED WITH TELEMATICS DEVICES. However, many fleets are still choosing not to adopt telematics (tracking & vehicle reporting technology), and of those that already have, many are not seeing their collision and claim rates decrease.

Andy Price, Practice Leader – Motor Fleet, Zurich, considers why this might be the case, and how companies can make the most of telematics.

What to do with the data Many legacy telematics systems have relatively crude measurements of some driver behaviours, such as acceleration, braking and threshold speed, while the more modern ones add cornering, speed against the posted speed limit, and fatigue, to the useful data generated.

However, when they implement telematics, organisations are often not ready for the data generated, even when this is via agreed exception reporting such as driving above the posted speed limit. Those that are ready for the increased data are not always clear on how to use this information.

The importance of acting on telematics data Let’s explore a common example. An organisation implements a driver behaviour telemetry solution that includes a ‘speed vs speed zone’ measurement. It is implemented on day one and when the data is analysed the next day, a high proportion of drivers have generated ‘speeding exceptions’.

Management are obliged to do something about this data – doing nothing would not be a great defence if faced with a health and safety, or worse, a corporate manslaughter charge.

However, at this point many organisations start to face challenges. What is their policy on speeding (if there is one)?

Does any driving-at-work policy link to the wider health and safety policy, and is it linked to the employee’s contract of employment? Without these fundamental fleet risk management policies and procedures in place, how do you start to manage these observed behaviours?

Many organisations assume that this is a training issue, but often the root cause of the behaviour is at a management or organisational level. Does the employee have to speed to meet a real or perceived business objective, for example? If that’s the case then no amount of training will help.

The importance of an on-road safety culture Even organisations with good management systems in place, and the right safetyoperational balance, will find it is not straightforward to change driver behaviours, as most people tend to overestimate their driving abilities.

To achieve sustainable change, there needs to be a well-developed on-road safety culture, where employees are receptive to change and training.

and strong leadership that demonstrates safe driving is a key priority of the organisation.

Telematics not a cure-all Driver behaviour is a relatively sophisticated risk management tool, but it is not the ‘silver bullet’ that some people claim.

There may be other good operational reasons to implement telematics, but if you are looking to manage and improve driver behaviours, you should make sure all the fundamental building blocks are in place, the on-road safety culture is addressed and your line managers have the skills, tools and appetite to engage with their staff to help make them safer on the road.

Nick Chambers, Boswell Aftermarket Chief Executive states “When it comes to using telematics to help manage insurance cost, a significant number of our motor factor clients have embraced it to great effect. Insurers’ premium rates are mainly calculated on the claims costs and overall profitability of the fleet and it’s been proven that telematics can assist in minimising these costs.”

Need for engagement The last piece of the jigsaw is to ensure all line managers are fully engaged in the risk management programme, giving positive feedback to drivers while investigating exceptions and negative trends.

Managers need to look at the telemetry data/exception reports (along with all other aspects relating to the employee’s safe driving performance), in order to understand the root causes of driver behaviour.

Line managers should also look at what the organisation could do differently to help prevent a reoccurrence of these behaviours.

Management systems focused on driver safety must align with operating practices and procedures, and the latter may need changing, to create an environment in which employees can drive safely.

The on-road safety culture should be developed through an on-going communication strategy,

IAAF UNVEILS 2015 CONFERENCE THEME: HOW TO SURVIVE AND THRIVE – NOW AND IN THE FUTURE THE IAAF HAS UNVEILED THE THEME OF THIS YEAR’S CONFERENCE: “HOW TO SURVIVE AND THRIVE – NOW AND IN THE FUTURE” AND WILL INCLUDE AN EXCLUSIVE TALK ON HOW 3D PRINTING IS BILLED AS THE “FUTURE OF MANUFACTURING.” The conference takes place on 17 December at the ICC in Birmingham and aims to examine current issues from both the UK and Europe, highlight the key changes from both a technical and a market perspective and consider what opportunities there are for the future.

BEN TACKLES MENTAL HEALTH WITHIN THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY BEN IS LAUNCHING A SERIES OF FAR-REACHING NEW CAMPAIGNS DESIGNED TO RAISE AWARENESS OF KEY HEALTH AND WELLBEING ISSUES, ENCOURAGING PEOPLE TO ACCESS THE CHARITY’S WIDE RANGE OF SUPPORT SERVICES.

The first campaign, which launches this month, focuses on mental fitness and dealing with problems that may impact on people’s mental wellbeing. The charity also aims to help employers support workers who may be struggling by raising awareness of its support services. A series of emails, posters, online resources and a social media campaign will encourage people to Speak To Ben if they are experiencing problems.

“One in four adults and one in ten children experience mental health problems every year, but it’s not talked about in the same way as physical illness. We want to help remove the taboo around mental health issues and encourage anyone who is struggling to ask for help,” explains Yvonne Hignell, BEN’s Support Services Director.

Although TecRMI technical service and repair data has been primarily developed for the workshop and the technicians actually undertaking the work, it also provides members with a valuable resource, which in this instance allows them to verify the labour time required for the repair subject to the claim.

Providing them with the tools to do so is one of the most important roles of an approved group supplier and TecAlliance, through its TecDoc and TecRMI subsidiaries is very keen to assist members in this way.

It is therefore sensible for members to look beyond the obvious products with which they are immediately familiar, such as the TecDoc CATALOG electronic parts identification data and catalogue system and consider some of the other business solutions that TecAlliance has made available.

Unfortunately, warranty claims and the associated settlement process, can be the source of much aggravation and inconvenience for members, as well as absorbing a great deal of their valuable time. Although suppliers will naturally differ in their approach and the speed in which they handle warranty claims, TecAlliance can help members in this often difficult process.

It is an inescapable reality that sometimes the costs directly allocated to a particular claim can be somewhat exaggerated, which often causes further delay and creates even more frustration.

The automatic creation of a spare parts package ensures that nothing is forgotten either in the calculation or the order. The order is compiled individually for each operation, tailored precisely to the vehicle and/or component involved. The direct linking of the spare parts catalogue means that members automatically have the right spare parts for the work time concerned, so have a full knowledge of cost implications.

All fitting variants and specific work times are also taken into account by selection criteria and additional items, such as set-up times, are shown separately and are automatically included in the calculation, which means the true extent of the warranty claim is easy to access and

THE CORTECO OE QUALITY REPLACEMENT CAMPAIGN MOVES TO ANOTHER LEVEL. CORTECO HAS DRAWN INSTALLERS’ ATTENTION TO AN INHERENT DANGER THAT EXISTS FROM PARTS THAT ARE NOT WHAT THEY APPEAR TO BE. The message, delivered in a further round of seminars organised in association with local motor factors and supported by the Original Equipment Suppliers Aftermarket Association, was that attractive prices may mask poor quality workmanship in the inside.

Among the issues raised about different product groups, invited technicians were very keen to hear about problems relating to some electrically switched engine mounts. They heard that while Corteco supplies an OE quality range, there are some alternative ranges available in the aftermarket that are not fit for purpose.

As Corteco is the aftermarket distribution arm of the Freudenberg Group, which is one of the world’s leading suppliers of OE vibration control components, it works closely with leading experts in vehicle systems design and

distributes one of the world’s largest ranges of OE quality vibration control components.

Technicians listened as the technology behind electrically switched engine mounts was explained. They are very advanced engineering components, designed to provide alternative responses to changeable driving conditions.

Although initially available on prestigious marques such as the Audi A4 or A6, these days they are increasingly found on a wider range of popular cars.

When drivers switch to 'sports' mode, for example, the suspension as well as the engine and transmission mounts 'stiffen up' in order to adapt to anticipated changes in driving conditions. The electrically switched engine mount compensates for an anticipated increase in engine 'rock'. The technicians observed that a complex series of chambers inside allows the dynamic movement of fluid between them. This produces the variations in vibration control required to match the driving mode selected by the driver.

The sophisticated 'hydromount' technology controls the interaction between the mount and the rest of the vehicle suspension system.

Garage technicians also learned that engine mounts like this are tuned to each vehicle at the point of design. This means also that they are not interchangeable.

In response to some detailed questions, Corteco explained that although some alternative brands might look OK, will fit and are priced attractively, the OE technology on the inside has often been replaced by solid rubber and nothing more. It means that they cannot produce the performance of the original component that is being replaced.

The cross-section below shows the degree of engineering inside an OE quality electrically switched engine mount supplied by Corteco, in comparison with an aftermarket alternative on offer at a significantly reduced price.

Solid rubber offers no variation in driving mode and delivers little in the way of vibration control.

In the debate that followed, the technicians agreed that if the point of the job was to reproduce the 'switch over' control intended by the vehicle designer and to deliver the OE quality ride expected by the vehicle owner, it made sense to select an aftermarket brand supplied by an OE supplier.

ALL KITTED OUT GATES TELLS INFORM WHY GARAGES ARE BUYING MORE AND MORE MICRO-V KITS. There are few visual indicators that the belt in a modern Auxiliary Belt Drive System (ABDS) is ready for replacement. Technicians can no longer afford to rely on the evidence from a visual check of the belt.

The visual check is no longer an appropriate measurement of belt wear because today’s belts are designed to deliver more power, in smaller and more confined engine compartments and must have greater strength. So, they are made from stronger materials that no longer crack as a result of age and excessive wear.

It’s vital that garage customers are aware of this and understand how ABDS belt technology has developed. It’s also advantageous to appreciate why Gates Micro-V belt kits are playing more important roles in the daily routines of so many other garages. Gates can show that sales of Micro-V kits have risen by 50% and says this has a direct correlation with its campaign to boost technical awareness amongst installers and increased kit availability at the motor factor.

Technical change As the number of components in the ABDS has expanded, the size of the maintenance task has increased. The performance of each individual

component in the ABDS is dependent upon consistent performances of all of the other components. As one begins to fail, the others begin to experience adverse influences.

The end case scenario is that once it has been decided that one component within the system requires replacement, it's a clear indication that all of the other components must also be in a state of advanced wear. As with timing belt drives, the best way to guarantee a reliable ABDS is to change the belt and all of the other components at the same time.

Technical training and support specialist Andrew Vaux runs many of the Gates Technical Workshops, which are organised in association with local motor factors. He explains what these workshops aim to achieve:

In addition to Micro-V belts, tensioners and idlers, the Gates Micro-V kit range includes kits with Torsional Vibration Dampers (TVDs) and/ or Overrunning Alternator Pulleys (OAPs). So, rather than just receiving a belt replacement, a complete drive system overhaul can be achieved. This provides the vehicle’s ABDS with the best opportunity to perform as efficiently as it did when it left the OE assembly line.

Just as installers need to appreciate the reasons why these parts must be replaced at the same time, they need to understand the folly behind “trying to save the customer money” by doing only half the job.

“It’s essential that technicians understand the need to take a diagnostic approach when attempting to resolve problems in a drive system,” he says. “It’s all about the ability to differentiate between a symptom and the actual cause of a problem. In an ABDS, for example, replacing the belt might cure some symptoms initially, but ignoring the potential damage from either a worn TVD or OAP means the problem will return sooner rather than later. A diagnostic approach can mean the difference between fixing the car the first time around and having to rectify residual issues at significant cost to the garage - in terms of both time and money - at some time in the near future.”

Sales messages As well as dealing with specific models, Gates Technical Workshops consider how the ABDS of today operates under heavier loads than in previous decades, how it is exposed to more extreme temperature fluctuations, as well as water, dirt, grease, oil and other environmental contaminants. Moreover, just as installation procedures vary between models, wear levels are likely to vary between different applications.

The message is that extra investment in the appropriate Gates Micro-V kit is not just the most sensible course of action for the garage, it’s the solution that makes most sense for the owner of the car as well. Wherever motor factors support these messages by broadcasting stock availability, sales inevitably increase.

VW TDI OIL FILTER INSERT REPLACEMENT MAHLE HAS RELEASED ITS LATEST TECHNICAL MESSENGER, THIS TIME FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF THE OIL FILTER ELEMENT ON THE POPULAR 1.4/1.6/2.0-LITRE TDI ENGINES USED WIDELY ACROSS THE VOLKSWAGEN GROUP. The element, MAHLE/Knecht part number OX 787D, fits within a two-piece filter housing module (OF206), which is also manufactured

by MAHLE, is mounted vertically on the engine block and was featured in a previous issue of Inform.

To protect the technician from spilled engine oil during the vehicle’s periodic oil changes, MAHLE designed the module to incorporate a drain screw, through which residual oil can be drained off easily and with the least mess. Helpfully, the screw can be loosened and re-tightened with a standard socket/spanner.

Air filter LX1636 fits the 3.5 and 5.7-litre petrol versions of the Chrysler 300 from October ’05 and the 6.1-litre version from March ’06. LX3347 fits the 2.0-litre petrol Mazda 5 from September ’10 and LX3751 the 1.0-litre petrol engine on the Nissan Pixo and Suzuki Alto March ’09. LX3775 is a special oval design filter and fits Mercedes 1.6-litre petrol C Class from April ’12, the 2.0-litre petrol E Class from March ’13 and the 2.0-litre petrol Infiniti Q from September ’14.

Replace the small O-ring on the drain screw and the large O-ring on the cover, but ensure each is moistened slightly with clean engine oil beforehand. Tighten the drain screw to 6Nm.

The Process First remove the drain plug in the oil sump and allow the engine oil to drain completely, then loosen and remove the small drain screw in the bottom of the bowl shaped bottom cover on the filter module. Allow the bowl to drain completely and then unscrew the cover to reveal the filter element.

The KX 399D replacement fuel filter element comes complete with the necessary O-ring and fits Iveco Daily 2.3 and 3.0-litre diesel variants from July ’11 onwards, as well as 3.0-litre Mitsubishi Canter diesel over the same period, including the diesel/electric version.

Finally, oil filter element OX1058D fits the 1.6-litre diesel engines in the Astra from January ’14 and Meriva from August ’13.

Lightly moisten the fleece end cap centre hole of the replacement filter element OX 787D with clean engine oil, insert into the module and tighten the bottom housing to 25Nm. Finally, fill up the engine oil to the correct level and check all the joints for any sign of leakage.

They also hosted several special track days for invited media and DENSO customers at some of the world’s most iconic racing venues – one in Poznan in Poland and one at the UK’s Brands Hatch, where the adventure culminated in a showstopping finale on November 4th.

SOLID EXPANDS COMPLETE RANGE OF FILTERS SOLID AUTO UK HAS ADDED A NUMBER OF NEW AIR, OIL AND FUEL FILTERS TO ITS EXPANDING FILTERS RANGE FOR JAPANESE AND KOREAN VEHICLES. In total, nine new filters have been launched covering 54 vehicle applications.

The new oil filters also also cover numerous vehicle engine derivatives including Mercedes B Class; Renault Captur, Clio, Grand Scenic, Megane and Scenic; and, Vauxhall Astra, Corsa, Meriva, Mokka and Zafira.

MONDEO DPF PRESSURE HOSES GROUPAUTO MEMBERS HAVE A PROVEN TRACK RECORD OF WINNING BUSINESS FROM THE FRANCHISED DEALER WHEN SOURCING AND SUPPLYING TYPICAL DAY-TO-DAY SERVICE AND REPAIR COMPONENTS. Some of the less familiar or more specialist items, because of their rarity, are often thought to be available only from the dealer can often be forgotten about and therefore result in a lost sale.

However, many of these products are in fact available through the independent sector and as members are becoming increasingly aware, often these are the components that provide them with the genuine business opportunities.

A great example of this is a set of replacement pressure hoses, that First Line has introduced into the range for the diesel particulate filter (DPF) on the Ford Mondeo IV, a component that is particularly prone to premature failure.

The Ford Mondeo IV and its derivatives are fitted with a DPF matrix that is coated with a platinum based catalyst. This lowers the temperatures needed to start burning the soot/carbon deposits and is designed to last about 120,000 miles. The DPF is monitored by a differential

pressure sensor to ensure it is not overloaded and the sensor compares the calculated restriction of the DPF. The Ford Mondeo IV, Galaxy II and S-Max are all fitted with a pair of rubber hoses, which run to and from the exhaust system either side of the DPF, allowing the connected pressure sensor to monitor the pressure differential either side of the DPF and consequently calculate how ‘full’ the DPF is and therefore when the car needs to carry out its regeneration.

Due to the arduous conditions in which these hoses operate and the very high temperature fluctuations they are subject to (up to 600 oC during DPF regeneration), it is not uncommon for these rubber hoses to become fatigued, hardened, brittle or scorched. This can lead to their failure, which will subsequently cause the differential pressure sensor (DPS) to register the incorrect reading.

To help members further assist their workshop customers, First Line advises that if the vehicle is reporting engine code issues such as P2002, P2452, or P2453 relating to the DPF or DPS, then there is a possibility that the DPF hoses are the cause and require replacement.

FUEL ADDITIVE VALUES INFORM LEARNS MORE ABOUT ADDITIVES THAT ARE IDEAL FOR SALE TO GARAGES AND GARAGE CUSTOMERS. It’s a fair bet that visitors who turn out to vintage car events, classic motor shows or even car rallies either own, have owned or have ambitions to own a second car that’s only to driven for fun.

It’s also likely that the second car will spend a lot of time under cover in the garage. Good maintenance is vital in order to keep it running well and Lucas Oil has been making GROUPAUTO members more aware of some hidden problems that enthusiasts might encounter that motor factors, retailers and garages already have the solutions for.

Ethanol damage Ethanol, or ethyl alcohol is added to modern fuel to increase the burn and because the alcohol has significant solvent and cleaning properties.

This combination helps to reduce exhaust emissions. There are downsides, too, that cause problems for older cars and in some cases, modern cars as well.

The solvent properties of alcohol dries-out, hardens and corrodes many of the different rubber compounds and plastics found in most

older vehicles. Fuel lines are damaged from the inside and any particles that break free can cause a blockage in the system. While fuel hoses degenerate slowly, fuel filters can be damaged very quickly indeed: “Ethanol can destroy a rubber seal in a day and that’s a major concern for the kind of vehicles in our collection,” says Doug Hill, manager of The National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, which houses a wide range of cherished old vehicles with a combined value exceeding over £70 million.

“We’ve found that fuel additives provide the best protection,” he adds.

Among the museum’s entries in this year’s prestigious Bonham’s London to Brighton Veteran Car run, for example, which took place in early November 2015, were a 1903 De Dion Bouton and a 22 bhp 1903 Daimler. The preparation for each vehicle included additives that, with regular use, disarm the ethanol that would otherwise cause severe internal damage to vintage fuel systems that include so many of their original components.

If the alcohol separates from the fuel, it bonds with any water particles already present. This creates additional problems in the fuel system.

An ethanol busting additive, such as Safeguard Ethanol Fuel Conditioner, from Lucas Oil, is an increasingly popular solution.

Fuel degeneration Beaulieu vehicles are occasionally required for filming purposes, or wedding hire. Doug Hill points out that for a car that’s run sporadically or rarely, stale fuel causes problems, too.

“The octane level falls sharply, very quickly and that’s a worry,” adds.

At the last GROUPAUTO & UAN Trade Show, members who the Lucas Oil learned about the advantages of supplying Lucas Oil Fuel Stabilizer.

Well, a lot of second cars experience starting issues after a lay-up not because they have developed an ignition fault, but as a result of fuel has gone off in the tank.
