Tregony Gallery is an artist-run gallery based in the ancient village of Tregony, Cornwall.

Over eight years, gallery owners Brian and Judi Green have cultivated an impressive roster of British and International contemporary artists as well as a distinctive program of exhibitions and artists talks, earning them a reputation for presenting exceptional works of art to local visitors, global collectors and media all over the world.

CORNWALL | LONDON

Tregony Gallery is delighted to present its fifth exhibition in central London. Continuing our connection between Cornwall and the capital, ‘Assemble*23’ explores the creative parallels between our artists. Highlighting the push-pull between abstract and figurative art, we group artists who work in fundamentally different ways but who share a common awareness and sensitivity.

With a strong interest in the traditions of the 20th century, we pull focus to artists who possess something different in the way they view and describe the world. This new generation of painters and sculptors have emerged from atelier training with technical brilliance and distinct channels of expression.

In ‘Assemble*23’ our intention, as ever, is to introduce our artists to a whole new audience and share our unique approach to curating and collecting art.

“I’m always intrigued by shadows or ghost images of somebody. When you close your eyes, features of a face or posture often don’t emerge but the ‘essence/soul’ of somebody does.” Victoria took her sculpture degree at City and Guilds of London Art School where the emphasis was on a classical training in life drawing and sculpture. “My fundamental interest is how to turn fleeting perceptual experiences into lasting pictorial statements”. David Baird began studying painting in 2006 at the Ryder Studio School in Santa Fe, NM. “Yonatan Becker lives and works in his studio in Tel Aviv. He paints with a wooden box balanced on his knees. Canvases that are mounted on wood and cardboard which he paints using a palette knife and also brushes”. Yonatan studied at the Jerusalem Studio School under the directorship of Israel Hershbreg. “As a figurative artist I enjoy the surprises and the surrender of control that oil painting uniquely offers me. “As a painter I am concerned with the process of seeing, I do not wish to describe. I aim to convey an approximation of what the eyes see and the real experience gained from engaging directly with a subject”. “Painting from direct observation is, for me, an exciting and intense experience. Paintings are two-dimensional surfaces with their own intrinsic beauty and abstract dynamism, which I try to harness”. Mark studied at Bournemouth and Poole College of Art from 1980-1982 and the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL, from 1982-1987, where he was taught by Euan Uglow, Norman Norris and Patrick George. Amy Erickson is an observational painter who lives and works in Seattle, WA. She earned a BFA in Painting from the Kansas City Art Institute and has pursued further training in painting and figure drawing at Gage Academy of Art Seattle, Washington.

The popular culture of film, comic book imagery, literature and photography contribute to the way I think about my ideas and images”. Gethin moved to London from Maesteg, South Wales to study on the Foundation Course at the Byam Shaw School of Art. From there he went on to study Fine Art at Camberwell School of Art. “I am a landscape painter. I work from observation, but am not an en plein air painter, nor would I say they my work is entirely realistic. Drawing from direct observation using ink, graphite, charcoal, or a mixture of materials, allows me the freedom to invent my paintings away from the landscape”. “There are certain things I see which I know I have to paint, this can be many different subjects but is usually an assemblage of forms and colours which create a compelling compositional structure. Just about any object bathed in light is extremely beautiful to me”. Rick Fox is a painter who is fascinated by perception and the challenges and complexity of all that is involved in the translation of the world. A graduate of the Massachusetts College of Art (MFA) and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (BFA).

“I am interested in fractal images and patterns regardless of whether these fractals were generated by mathematics, humans or scenes in the natural world. Echoing my background in graphic design, I use a scaffold of drawing to inquire into the compositional forces of the painting”. Judi studied Graphic Design at Kingston School of Art and painting at the Slade School of Fine Art. “My intention is to amalgamate opposing, contradictory and separate languages into a coherent whole. The result being a split. A fractured surface that suspends the subject in a state of flux. My interest within this spatial dichotomy, where edges meet, spill and bleed across a palimpsest continuum, is prevalent in my recent landscape work”. “I am interested in the visual and communicative potential of objects that are cast off, discarded, and over-looked. Inherent to still life is an engagement with the mundane and domestic”. Joe is an observational painter currently residing in Starkville, MS.
