Henry County Bicentennial Series: Magical History Tour Women’s Suffrage in Henry County Thursday, March 10, 6 pm Nan Polk presents the history of women’s suffrage in Henry County.

Robert Indiana Thursday, April 14, 6 pm Aaron Dicken and Dick Bouslog present about Robert Indiana, the creator of the iconic LOVE sculpture who was born in Henry County.

Beginner Computer Class Thursday, March 3, 4-5:30 pm Computer Training Lab Participants will learn the basics of computer functions, how to troubleshoot minor issues, and how to navigate Google to conduct a search. No experience required.

Storm Spotter Training from the National Weather Service Thursday, March 24, 6-7:30 pm Auditorium The National Weather Service presents their annual SKYWARN Storm Spotter Training. Learn the basics of thunderstorm development, fundamentals of storm structure, and how to identify potential severe weather features. Find out how to report information and what kind of information to report.

Noteworthy Concert Featuring Zach Dubois Thursday, May 19 7-8:15 pm

1400 Plaza Join us at 1400 Plaza as we kickoff our Noteworthy Series with singer song writer, Zach Dubois.

Dubois’s style is considered between John Denver and John Mellencamp. In the event of inclement weather (register for notifications), the concert will be moved to a secondary location. Noteworthy Concerts are sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

Henry County Church History Thursday, May 12, 6 pm

Sam Frost presents this history of Henry County churches.

Lightkeepers Movie & Discussion Thursday, March 31, 6-8 pm Auditorium Watch Selma with the Lightkeepers of Henry Co., a community group dedicated to keeping racial equality discussions going in the county.

Let’s Talk Global Warming with the Vanns Tuesday, April 12, 6-7 pm Computer Training Lab Retired Ball State professors John and Carolyn Vann answer such questions as: What are greenhouse gases?

Where do they come from? What are the major impacts of climate change? Is it possible to mitigate climate change, or can we only adapt? For those who wish to join virtually, a Google Meet link is emailed once registration is confirmed.

Cool Climate Festival Saturday, April 30, 10 am-2 pm Henry County Arts Park This climate-themed festival showcases different "green" technologies, a climate walk, food vendors, local environmental groups, live music, and crafts.

Presented in partnership with the New Castle Climate Action Team, Arts Association of Henry County, New Castle HS Environmental Club, Healthy Communities of Henry County, and Earth Charter Indiana.

Sunny Days Screening with PBS Monday, May 9, 11 am-12 pm

Auditorium Meet the Founding Mothers of Ball State in the new PBS documentary: Sunny Days.

Indiana Disasters: Traveling Exhibit from Indiana Historical Society April 4-May 9 In partnership with the Henry County Historical Society and the Indiana Historical Society, you can find this traveling exhibit in front of the AV desk.

Disasters of all kinds—biological, violent, or bizarre events such as epidemics, bombs, and squirrel migrations—are forever remembered in local communities. In this traveling exhibit, photographs from various IHS collections and institutions all over the state capture unforgettable Indiana catastrophes while newspaper headlines, illustrations and survivor accounts show how Hoosier’s persevere in the face of disaster.

Update on Library Renovation Project It’s been nearly 20 years since the New Castle-Henry County Public Library had its last renovation project.

Since that time, Library Director Winnie Logan has recognized some opportunities for change within the library building, specifically accessibility, expanding the children’s library, and offering a business center.

This renovation project will not cause any tax increase, but will add more value through improved service to the community.

“As with anything we do here at the library, we always want to keep our community’s interests and needs at the forefront,” Logan shared in a recent Kids enjoy a science project in the article in The CourierChildren’s Library.

Times. (1/12/22) While there are some preliminary plans, the project awaits approval from the Henry County Council to formally start the bond process at the time of this printing.

New Project= Easier Checkouts!

Soon it will be even easier to check out your materials from the library. The library is in the middle of installing RFID (radio frequency identification) tags on every item in the collection. This tag will replace the current bar code system as a way to identify books for check out.

This project is made possible by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services, administered by the Indiana State Library. The library board also used gift funds to supplement the investment in the project.

“This will make self-checkout much easier to use,” shared Library Director Winnie Logan. “Patrons will be able to set a stack of books on the machine and it checks them all out.”

There will be three new self-checkout machines, but patrons can also have staff check out materials for them. The machines will not replace staff, but allow for more convenient access for those who prefer to checkout their own materials.

The project is expected to be completed by summer.
