Змінена людина — центральна метафора як ХХ, так і ХХІ століття. Історія і політика намагаються стерти людину, змінити її та позбавити обличчя. Борис Лур’є (1924–2008) — американський художник-нонконформіст і письменник, засновник мистецького руху NO!art — одним із перших порушує питання, що вже давно витали в повітрі: зникнення індивідуальності, ентропія особистості і реальності.

Altered Man is an important metaphor of the twentieth as well as the twenty-first centuries; of history and politics that try to erase and deface the individual. Boris Lurie (1924-2008), Soviet-born American non-conformist artist and writer, founder of the NO!art movement, was one of the first to raise questions that had long been in the air: the disappearance of individuality, the entropy of personality — and thus of reality.

Художня практика Бориса Лур’є тісно пов’язана з темою Голокосту. Його виставка «Змінена людина» — це розмова про кінець метафізики, що стала «неможливою після Освенциму». Лур’є, який пережив чотири концтабори, вважав, що морально виправданим у ситуації «тотального концтабору» є тільки бунт. Тому робочою стратегією він обрав жорстку критику. Світ як тотальний табір, де люди безжально страчують собі подібних, світ як бордель, де людина, а саме жінка, перетворюється на об’єкт — це бачення стало нервом мистецтва Бориса Лур’є.

Boris Lurie’s art is deeply intertwined with the Holocaust. His Altered Man exhibit is a conversation about the end of metaphysics, which is «impossible after Auschwitz.»

Lurie, a survivor of four concentration camps, believed that the only moral path in the context of the «total concentration camp» of modern reality is rebellion, and chose scathing criticism as his mode of expression. The vision of the world as both a concentration camp in which people ruthlessly destroy one another, and of the world as a brothel, in which people, particularly women, are objectified — this was the touchstone and the thread that runs through Lurie’s art.

Altered Man is a precise diagnosis of its time. The works presented in the exhibition can be seen as a Dadaistic gesture of destruction. The hated object or character is transformed and effaced. Evil in all its guises, is neutralized by erasing it and removing it from the historical record.

Мистецтво Лур’є бунтує проти буржуазних цінностей (моральних, естетичних та інституціональних) i демонструє територію громадянської та власної свободи, незаангажованого промовляння. Саме тому виставка «Змінена людина» в Україні є знаменним показником відкритості сучасного українського суспільства.

The art of Boris Lurie rebels against bourgeois values, be they moral, aesthetic or institutional, and instead stakes out a position of civic and personal liberty. The current exhibition of Boris Lurie in Ukraine is a notable sign of the openness of contemporary Ukrainian society.

Бабин Яр - Румбула Україна з її неповторною культурою, величезною територією та непростою історією завжди була місцем перетину значної кількості культурних традицій. Велику роль в історії країни відіграли її євреї, що оселилися на території північно-східного узбережжя Чорного моря з початку нашої ери та згадувані у київських літописах від Х сторіччя. Взаємини українського та єврейського народів через їхню належність до двох різних релігійних традицій були непрості, і тільки зараз, у вільній Україні, ситуація докорінно змінюється. Не оминули Україну й трагічні події Другої світової війни, яка жорнами пройшлася по всіх країнах Східної Європи. Знищення німецькими фашистами євреїв тут відбувалося за тією самою схемою, що й у Польщі, Латвії, Литві, Білорусі, Чехії та на інших «східних територіях». Постраждали під час війни і Київ та Одеса. Нонконформіст Борис Лур’є пройшов гетто в Ризі, концтабори у Латвії, Польщі та Німеччині, він дивом вижив. І через те, що він гуманіст у найширшому розумінні цього слова, Лур’є присвятив свою мистецьку та літературну творчість не лише аналізу й осмисленню Голокосту, а і такому гуманітарному питанню, як захист жінок. Ключовою датою його життя є 8 грудня 1941 року — день, коли у лісі Румбула під Ригою загинули його близькі. Румбула у Латвії, Бабин Яр в Україні — театр жаху, де масові розстріли відбувалися за однією і тією самою схемою. У Бабиному Яру 29 і 30 вересня 1941 року розстріляно понад 33 тисяч євреїв. Весь жовтень відбувалися подальші розстріли. У Румбулі 30 листопада та 8 грудня 1941 року розстріляно 29 тисяч осiб. Звільнений з Бухенвальда американцями, після війни Борис Лур’є опинився в американській еміграції. У США, так само, як й у СРСР, ніхто і слухати не хотів про трагедію, що розгорнулася на сході Європи. Була забута Румбула, був забутий Бабин Яр. У СРСР панувала диктатура, в Америці — консюмеризм. Пам’ять зникала, мов кола на воді. Саме цьому й намагався протистояти художник-нонконформіст, панк та анархіст Борис Лур’є.

Babi Yar - Rumbula Ukraine, with its prodigious cultural wealth, great territory and difficult history, has always stood at the crossroads of cultural traditions. Its Jewish population has played a crucial role in its history. Ukraine’s Jews settled the territory on the northeastern shore of the Black Sea since the beginning of our era; they are mentioned in Kievan chronicles dating back to the 10th century. Relations between the Ukrainian and the Jewish peoples have never been smooth, in part due to their divergent religious traditions. Only now, in free Ukraine, have we begun to see notable improvements.

The Second World War deeply affected Ukraine. The Nazi extermination of Jews was carried out here according to the same scheme as in the rest of Eastern Europe, including Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus and Czechoslovakia. Kiev and Odessa in particular suffered enormous losses.

Non-conformist Boris Lurie managed to survive the Riga ghetto and concentration camps in Latvia, Poland and Germany. A humanist in the broad sense of the word, he then dedicated his literary and artistic output to analysing and trying to understand the Holocaust, as well as to women’s causes and various humanitarian concerns.

The turning point in Lurie’s life came on the day when his family was murdered in Rumbula Forest near Riga.

Rumbula in Latvia and Babi Yar in Ukraine are a theater of horror, where mass shootings took place in the same way.

In Babi Yar between September 29 and September 30 over 33 thousand Jews, mostly woman and children, were murdered. Further shootings took place throughout October. In Rumbula over 29 thousand Jews were murdered on November 30 and December 8, 1941.

Boris Lurie was liberated from Buchenwald by U.S. forces and ended up emigrating to the United States after the war. The Eastern European tragedy was then quickly receding from public memory. The names of Rumbula and Babi Yar rarely registered. The USSR was in the throes of a dictatorship while, the United States was ruled by consumerism. The American anarchist artist, punk and rebel, Boris Lurie tried to fight against this collective forgetfulness.

Не менш невірогідними здаються і скажені обставини його життя та історичні події, що з ними сусідили. Зараз творчість Лур’є є зручним матеріалом для статей і наукових конференцій з тем «проблеми репрезентації Голокосту» чи «війна та порнографія». Водночас його життя може вписатися в голлівудський сценарій із низкою запаморочливих і трагічних подій. Але якщо подивитися уважно, під оцим калейдоскопом понять та ролей приховується бунтар, романтик і поет. Борис Лур’є народився у Ленінграді 1924 року. Його мати належала до тих жінок, якими уславився початок ХХ сторіччя: незалежна елегантна дама, освічена, самостійна та відкрита. У неї був свій кабінет дантиста — вона практикувала вдома, колекція мистецтва, троє дітей — одна з доньок ще у ранній юності ступила на соціалістичну стезю. До того ж мати Лур’є була вегетаріанкою. Батько, Ілля Лур’є, також міг би стати прототипом якогось кіногероя — запальний підприємець, він постачав до Червоної Армії шкіряні вироби. У 1925 році, коли стало зрозуміло, що час, коли його заарештують як «буржуя», неминуче настане, Лур’є-старший вирішив вивезти родину до незалежної Республіки Латвії (1934– 1940), де вони мали родичів. Борис згадує дитинство і ранню юність у довоєнній Ризі як найщасливіший період свого життя, а його описи міста й околиць за атмосферою нагадують романи Набокова: буржуазні приморські пансіони, пляжі, музичні вечори, узимку — лижі, перше кохання — прекрасна дівчина Люба Трєскунова і мрія стати художником, як його двоюрідний брат, карикатурист Еммануїл Чашкін. Та не все було так безхмарно: з 1930-х років націоналістичний уряд Улманіса почав провадити у Латвії антиєврейську політику. Переконаний комуніст, карикатурист Чашкін при Улманісі потрапив до в’язниці, і старшому Лур’є — батькові Бориса — довелося давати хабаря, аби відправити того до радянської Росії, де Чашкін був заарештований удруге, цього разу — ГПУ, і висланий до Сибіру. Улітку 1940 року, коли в Латвію увійшла Червона Армія, режим Улманіса впав, було створено прорадянський уряд і почалися переслідування ненадійних осіб. У місті лютував НКВС. he artist Boris Lurie cuts a highly unconventional figure: autodidact, concentration camp survivor, stockbroker, destitute New Yorker, boundary-pushing political artist, author of a pornographic novel — it seems almost impossible for one individual to encompass all of these identities. Yet his life circumstances and the historical events that produced them were no less implausible. In today’s society Lurie’s art makes for suitable material for academic articles and conferences dealing with the subjects of Holocaust representation or war and pornography. Yet, his biography could also be a Hollywood screenplay given its sequence of mind-blowing as well as tragic occurrences. This web of concepts and character parts has one thread running through it — that of romantic, poetic rebellion.

Boris Lurie was born in Leningrad in 1924. His mother was an emancipated woman of the early 20th century — independent, elegant, educated and open to the world. A practicing dentist, she had her own clinic at home, while also being an art collector, a mother of three children (one of them became a socialist in early youth and was «married off» in Italy to avoid arrest), and a vegetarian. His father was an equally unusual figure, an avid entrepreneur who supplied the Red Army with leather goods. In 1925, when it became clear that he would be arrested as a «bourgeois,» Ilya Lurie decided to take his family out of the Soviet Union, to independent Latvia (1934-1940), where they had relatives. However, since he had entered the country illegally, a case was started against him. Of the family that remained in the Soviet Union, Boris Lurie’s paternal uncle Alexander would be arrested in 1948 as part of the Doctors’ Plot.

In the 1920s and 30s Riga, where the family moved, was a prosperous European city. The

three children — Boris, Assya and Jeanna — attended a liberal Jewish school, where instruction was in German. Boris received an education typical for a middle-class child, with plenty of books, arts, and sports. By the time World War II broke out, Lurie could already speak Russian, German, English and Latvian.

In Latvia the elder Lurie pursued business ventures in many areas, including logging operations and moviemaking. Boris reflected on his childhood and early youth in prewar Riga as the happiest time in his life. His descriptions of the city and its environs make one think of Nabokov’s novels: upper-class seaside resorts, beaches, musical evenings and skiing in winter. He speaks of his first love, the beautiful Ljuba Treskunova, and his dream of being an artist like his cousin, the cartoonist Emmanuil Chashkin. Yet not everything was rosy. In the early 1930s Karlis Ulmanis’ nationalist government was becoming increasingly anti-Semitic. The staunch Communist Chashkin was imprisoned under Ulmanis, and Boris’ father had to pay a bribe so that he would be sent to Soviet Russia, where Chashkin was again arrested, this time by the GPU (secret police), and exiled to Siberia.

In the summer of 1940, when the Red Army invaded Latvia, Ulmanis’ regime fell, a pro-Soviet government was created and «undesirables» were sent into exile. The NKVD (precursor of the KGB) was terrorizing the city. Lurie’s aunt’s husband, a small business owner, had just been arrested — a bureaucratic error or something more? Once again, Lurie the entrepreneur feared trouble from the Soviet regime.

І знову радянська влада погрожувала неприємностями підприємцеві Лур’є. Рівно через рік, у червні 1941 року, німці окупували радянські території. Коли у липні солдати Вермахту вже марширували по Ризі, на вулицях лунала музика, а латиські дівчата плели віночки для німецьких солдатів. Як і в усіх країнах Західної Європи, тут було багато тих, хто вирішив перейти на бік німців. Почалася масована націонал-соціалістська пропаганда. Латиська націоналістична поліція з ентузіазмом вдалася до етнічних чисток — масових убивств євреїв. Усього через чотири дні після вторгнення було спалено будівлю Великої хоральної синагоги, де згоріли живцем 500 осіб, зокрема і батьків дядько Моїсей. Брата матері Залмана, якого Борис через багато років назве «хіппі», розстріляли просто посеред вулиці. До жовтня в Ризі було вбито близько 6500 осіб. У жовтні євреїв, які залишилися, серед них і родину Лур’є, виселили із помешкань та зігнали на робітничу околицю міста — до Московського району. Родину Люби Трєскунової оселили також тут. Спершу цю частину міста обгородили колючим дротом, пізніше — парканом заввишки шість метрів. На вході до гетто стояли попередження про те, що будьякі спроби контактів із в’язнями каратимуться смертю. У гетто ледве вистачало продовольчих пайків, проте просто тут, у тому пеклі, молоді люди крутили платівки, танцювали, слухали джаз. Ситуація була нереальна. Уранці учорашніх вільних громадян з особливою відзнакою на одязі — жовтою зіркою — гнали на роботу крізь вузькі «колючі» коридори, побудовані уздовж тьмяних вулиць із низькими, майже сільськими будинками. Скоро до Риги за планом знищення євреїв стали звозити людей з Рейху. У листопаді на стінах з’явилися оголошення про евакуацію. У місті планували залишити працездатних громадян, переважно чоловіків, які мають корисні професії. Інших евакуювали. Куди? Ніхто не знав. Сюди, як і до інших міст та містечок — від Угорщини й до Росії, зрідка доходив непевний поголос про масові вбивства. Мало хто здогадувався, що «евакуація» означає смерть. Борис до найменших подробиць пам’ятав той грудневий день, коли «евакуювали» його маму, сестру Жанну та стару бабусю. У понеділок, 8 грудня, він прокинувся десь о четвертій ранку, і щось «виштовхнуло» його на вулицю. Крізь глибокі замети він потайки про14

брався до паркана з колючого дроту. Звідтіля було видно будинок, у якому його мати, сестра і бабуся провели кілька днів перед тим, як їх «евакуювали». Ішов сніг. Було чутно крики охоронця чи поліцейського. Відбувалася перекличка. Невиразні тіні тупцяли на морозі, очікуючи на транспорт. Серед них не було його близьких. «Я повернувся в кімнату до батька, щоб заснути... Мій сон був безтурботним. Ми прокинулися рано і вийшли на вулицю, де були вишикувані колони робітників... Коли ми повернулися з майстерень, ми дізналися, що в’язнів, які не вийшли на роботу в Арбейтстабір, повезли у бік Румбули, аби ті ніколи не повернулися».

Тієї самої ночі жінок відправили маршем до лісу і розстріляли.

30 листопада і 8 грудня 1941 року в Румбульському лісі на околиці Риги сталася трагедія: німці спільно з латиськими поліцаями знищили близько 26 тисяч євреїв, переважно жінок і дітей. Серед них були бабуся, мати, сестра Бориса Жанна та його перша любов Люба. Кожну було вбито пострілом у потилицю та скинуто до загальної ями. З усієї родини врятувалася тільки сестра Ася — ще до війни вона вийшла заміж за італійця. Борис ледве міг зрозуміти, що сталося, часом заперечуючи самому собі протягом багатьох років. Кожного наступного дня свого життя він нав’язливо повертався до останніх годин його близьких. Щодня він уявляв собі розташування їхніх тіл у ямах, куди вони впали після пострілів. Операцією керував обергрупенфюрер СС і генерал поліції Фрідріх Єккельн, який придумав власну систему: можна було зекономити набої, вбиваючи пострілом у потилицю. До ями люди падали лавами. Це називалося «пакування сардин». Із самого початку перебування у гетто окупаційна влада проводила нескінченні переклички, облік та селекції. Відбирали до найрізноманітніших категорій: для життя, для смерті, для виснажливих робіт, на медичні експерименти, на волосся, на добрива тощо. Під час однієї з таких селекцій Бориса розподілили у групу, яка, найімовірніше, була призначена до певної та швидкої смерті, а батька — до групи «корисних» євреїв. Не бажаючи розставатися з батьком, молодик на свій страх і ризик відірвався від «поганої» групи і, перейшовши через майдан, приєднався до батька. «...коли я перетнув “Апельплац” перед носом у поліції та СС,

while music played in the streets and Latvian girls made wreaths for the conquerors. As in all Eastern European countries, there were plenty of collaborators. Widespread Nazi propaganda had begun. The Latvian Nationalist Police took the lead on ethnic cleansing, and mass murders of Jews had started. Almost four days after the invasion, the building of the Great Choral Synagogue went up in flames, burning five hundred people to death. One of them was Boris’ father’s uncle Moysey. His maternal uncle, Zalman, whom Boris would refer to as a «hippie» many years later, was shot right in the street. By October 1941 over 6,300 Jews had been murdered in Riga.

That October the remaining Jews in Riga, including Lurie’s family, were evicted from their apartments and herded off to the working-class outskirts of Moskovsky District. Ljuba Treskunova’s family was also resettled there. This part of the city was boarded off, first with barbed wire and later with a twenty-foot-tall fence. At the entrance to the ghetto hung signs that any attempts to come in contact with the occupants were punishable by death. Food rations in the ghetto were barely sufficient, yet even in this inferno young people put on jazz records and danced. The situation was unreal. In the mornings yesterday’s free citizens, who now wore the yellow star, were herded to work through narrow barbed-wire corridors, built along bleak streets with peasant-style houses.

Soon, prisoners from the Reich were being brought to Riga for extermination. In November 1941 evacuation announcements began to appear on ghetto building walls. Only people capable of working, mostly men in useful trades, could remain in the city, while others were being sent away. Where? No one knew. Vague rumors about mass killings had reached here, as well as many

cities and towns from Hungary to Russia. Yet few people knew that «evacuation» meant death.

Boris would remember in smallest detail the December day when his mother, sister Jeanna and elderly grandmother perished. On December 8, a Monday, he woke up at four in the morning; something propelled him out into the street. He crept through deep snow up to the barbed-wire fence. He could see the house where his mother, sister and grandmother were being held for several days prior to their «evacuation.» It was snowing. He could hear the screams of the guard or policeman: the roll call. Dim shadows stamped their feet on the snow while waiting for their transport. His family was not among them. «I returned to my room and fell sound asleep next to my father. We woke up early and went out to the street where columns of workers had lined up... When we came back from the workshop we found out... that the prisoners who did not go to work at the Arbeitslager had been taken on buses in the direction of Rumbula, to never come back again.»

The Rumbula massacre took place on November 30 and December 8, 1941. The Einsatzgruppen, together with Latvian police forces, killed over 26,000 Jews, most of them women and children, in the forest on the outskirts of Riga. Friedrich Jeckeln, Obergruppenführer SS and Police Leader, directed the operation. He had invented his own system: to save on ammunition, the victims were murdered with a single shot to the back of the neck. The dead fell in rows into freshly dug pits. The SS called it «sardine packing.»

Boris’ mother, sister, grandmother and first love Ljuba all perished in the massacre. Only his sister Assya, who had married and moved to Italy before the war, survived. Boris could hardly pro15

І знову ситуація була найвищою мірою невірогідна: з одного боку, Борис і його батько проводили дні посеред шуб із соболя, ювелірних виробів, дамських капелюшків, паперових квітів та фільдеперсових панчіх, а з іншого — жили у гетто та строєм ходили із «дому» на роботу під мовчазними поглядами учорашніх сусідів. Іноді посеред шуб і золотих ланцюжків комусь із робітників могло не пощастити — його могли пристрелити. У 1943 році радянські війська підходили до Риги й німці замітали сліди: розривали могили і спалювали трупи. Бориса з батьком відправили до концтабору Саласпілс за вісім кілометрів від міста, аби вбити, на випадок захоплення латиських територій Червоною Армією. У Саласпілсі проводили медичні експерименти над маленькими дітьми, і він увійшов до історії як частково «дитячий» концтабір. До моменту, коли в таборі опинилися обидва Лур’є, там залишалися тільки неєврейські політв’язні. У серпні 1944 року син і батько були вислані до пересильного концтабору Штутгоф на території окупованої Польщі, поблизу Гданська. В історію той табір потрапив через те, що там варили мило з людських трупів. Лур’є так згадує Штутгоф: «Я дивлюся у вікно нашого барака. Групу табірних дітлахів віком від восьми до чотирнадцяти років — мені самому

cess what had happened and remained in denial for many years. At the same time, he would return obsessively to his loved ones’ last hours and imagined the positions of their bodies in the pits where they fell after being shot.

from the city; the plan was to kill all prisoners if the Red Army occupied this territory. Salaspils was a site of medical experiments on the young; history remembers it as a «children’s concentration camp.» At the time that the Luries ended up there, only non-Jewish prisoners remained at the camp.

From the beginning of the Riga Ghetto the Nazi occupiers conducted endless roll calls, checks and selections. The occupants were selected for all kinds of purposes: life, death, forced labor, medical experiments, hair, fertilizer. During one of these selections Boris was put into a group most likely targeted for immediate extermination while his father went to another, for «useful Jews.» Not wanting to part from his father, Boris took the wild chance of separating from his group and cutting across the square to join his father: «When I crossed the Appelplatz [roll call area] right in front of the police and the SS, I risked certain death.» In the commotion no one stopped him.

Starting in 1942 Boris Lurie and his father were employed in the Lenta workshops in Riga. They made luxury goods for the wives of German officers, who took their children on walks in the same backyards where the condemned did forced labor. It was, once again, a highly surreal situation: Boris and his father spent their days among sable coats, jewelry, ladies’ hats, paper flowers and Persian thread stockings. Yet they lived in the ghetto and left their «house» in the morning in military formation, under their ex-neighbors’ silent stares.

Sometimes, an unlucky employee working among the furs and gold chains would be shot.

In 1943 Soviet troops were approaching Riga.

The Nazis started covering up their tracks; they opened up mass graves and burned the corpses.

Boris and his father were meanwhile taken to the Salaspils concentration camp eight kilometers

In August 1944 the father and son were sent to Stutthof concentration camp near Gdansk in occupied Poland. This camp is known to history for making soap from human remains. Here are Lurie’s recollections of Stutthof: I am looking out the window of our barrack. A group of camp kids ranging in age from eight to fourteen — I myself was nineteen at the time — are gathered by the fence. They are in a good mood; they have probably gotten sufficient travel food rations and are about to be taken to Auschwitz.

After Stutthof they were transferred to the next camp, Magdeburg in Germany. There, prisoners had to work at the Polte-Werke factory. Both the prisoners and the workshops belonged to a wide network of slave labor, which was all under the aegis of the Buchenwald administration; the camp system was bureaucratically structured and highly organized. Boris’ and his father’s job was to make munitions shells. Later the factory was shut down for lack of raw materials.

Spring 1945: the camp prisoners were being sent to the city to clear rubble after air raids. At least they could look for potatoes in the cellars of the bombed-out houses.

One fine day we came to the meeting spot in the city center and found that our escort guards had fled. We were suddenly free. We did not know the place and had no idea where to go. Everything lay in ruins. My father was sick at the time; he lay in

the barracks. So myself and another young man, whom I had become close to because he had the same situation with his father, decided to go back to the camp. We went back, but our fathers were not there. The camp was in an uproar. The management had fled and the prisoners were raiding the supplies and stuffing themselves.

The Allied forces unleashed a heavy aerial bombing attack on Magdeburg. For eight days, until liberation, the exhausted teenager lived among the ruins and slept under someone’s bed. The Nazi police forces meanwhile combed through the city in search of escapees. Boris once hid on the top floor of a bombed-out house where only the walls and staircase remained, behind a turned-over bathtub.

Up there I lay for a whole day, my feet sticking out of the short bathtub, while the search went on all around me. A man finally did come up the staircase, but then stopped and turned around, going back just before reaching the level from which he could have seen me.

Once again, Boris had cheated death. He finally went back to the deserted concentration camp and slept there for several days straight. And then, a miracle. «Get up, Boris,» he heard his father speak. Perhaps a hallucination stemming from hunger? How could his father be there, and wearing an expensive suit and hat to boot?

«Get up and trash this stupid camp uniform. I’ve brought you a nice suit.» It was not a hallucination. Within a week his unsinkable, cheerful father had found an apartment, a mistress and... wine cellars. There were plenty of people thirsting for a celebratory drink: Soviet POWs, American soldiers and, of course, the Red Army.

America In 1946, on the insistence of Boris’ sister Assya, who shamed them for living in the country of «murderers», Boris and his father moved to New York. The father once again started his business from scratch and prospered. Boris became an artist. He called New York «Babylon» and lived inside his studio, leading a spartan-like existence.

He harbored so little interest for material things that when, years later, he went to City Hall to register his marriage to the gallery owner Gertrude Stein, he showed up with his clothing nearly in tatters, and the wedding did not take place.

Isaac Bashevis Singer has written with poignancy about how no one in New York spoke about the war amidst the crowds and the ambition, the luxury and the poverty. Anyone who uttered a word about the murders and concentration camps was looked at askance and, as a rule, simply ignored. Meanwhile, there was the visual culture of the city, striking for any European, Lurie being no exception. New York resembled a giant exhibit of cheap advertising, where savage originality lived alongside cynicism and everything appeared to be for sale. In the 1950s and 1960s, as Holocaust survivors were moving to the United States, New York also became the center of the art world. Abstract expressionism and Pop art were the movements of the day.

Paintings exhibited in fashionable galleries were being sold for untold sums. Nobody yet thought of Pop art as a political project.

У гротескній, фантастичній формі з елементами психоделіки Лур’є розповідає історію невільника та господині, у якій особисті стосунки накладаються на події Голокосту. Цікаво, що передмову до першого видання, яке вийшло в Нью-Йорку вже після його смерті, написала письменниця і доміна Теренс Селлерс, яка була переконана, що сучасна візуальна культура садомазохізму виходить з естетики Третього Рейху. run down bohemian neighborhood of the Lower East Side. This gallery held collective exhibits of a new movement called NO!art, which opposed the art establishment as venal. Boris Lurie in particular spoke out against the commercialization and domestication of art. The three artists’ works, albeit different, were vulgar, foul, heavy-handed and loud. This kind of art could not decorate any living room or bedroom. The exhibits held at the gallery also carried intentionally provocative titles like The Vulgar Show (1960) and The Doom Show (1961), and in the NO! Sculpture/Shit Show (1964), huge piles of excrement-like material were exhibited at the Gallery: Gertrude Stein.

NO!art was an integral part of the 1960s. Situationism, Fluxus, Arte Povera — these were the art communities that Lurie formed a part of, with his own distinctive voice. This decade saw the creation of a new kind of artist identity: no longer a careful sophisticate like Marcel Duchamp, but a rough, scalpel-like intruder into culture, a direct consequence of the horrors of war.

The Holocaust and Pornography Along with Kа-Tsetnik who wrote about concentration camp brothels, Jerzy Kosinski with his phantasmagoric novel about a Jewish child’s wanderings through war-torn Poland, and influenced by Jean Genet, Georges Bataille, and Alejandero Jodorowsky, whose work he admired, Lurie makes a connection between the Holocaust and pornography. Many saw in the Holocaust a metaphor for obscenity. For Lurie, this is combined with the prominent thread of violence against women that runs through all his work. He recalls the war as heaps of dead bodies. He also mentions «the final love embrace with thousands of naked women, old men, and children.»

Lurie’s collages feature faceless dead bodies from concentration camps jumbled together with pin-up girls, merchandise and advertising posters. Some images and objects feature the word «NO» and, on top, swastikas or yellow stars.

Such was the form in which the Holocaust came back around for him. For Lurie, the world was circumscribed by a simple yet powerful formula: if you want to protest against consumerism, the exploitation of women or superficial decorative art, mine your actual experience — in this case, juxtapose the Holocaust and pornography.

Most of Lurie’s works were collages that brought together taboo images having to do with sexuality and violence — the eternal theme of Thanatos and Eros. He ironically declared Hitler to have been the greatest artist of all time, and called the mounds of corpses in concentration camps «Hitler’s assemblages.»

The Novel House of Anita In the 1970s Boris Lurie began writing the pornographic novel House of Anita where-in the tragedy he had lived through was, once again, deeply intertwined with the theme of sadomasochism. House of Anita is his magnum opus. In a grotesque, fantastic form featuring psychedelic elements he tells the story of mistress and slave, in which personal relations are superimposed on the history of the Holocaust. The preface to the first edition, published in New York after his death, was written by the author and dominatrix Terence Sellers, who believed that contemporary visual sadomasochistic culture could be traced back to the esthetics of the Third Reich. She also thought that S&M could be used therapeutically, like a form of psychoanalysis.

Memoir In 1976 Lurie travelled to Riga — in his words, the «strangest place on Earth.» When he went there as a foreign tourist, «a ghost,» it no longer became possible to ignore all that he had lived through. This stream of memories was something he grappled with until his death in 2009.

Like many of those who had lived through the Holocaust, Lurie suffered from survivors’ guilt: We didn’t like the dead. We felt the dead had handed us the bill to pay up, for having been left alive. We did not like these Jews pointing their accusing fingers at us and beckoning us to join them, after such a long time and with all the extra trouble we had, just to survive...What horror that they, and not the Germans, now tried to pull us into their decaying mass graves. We didn’t like our mothers...

Lurie’s attitude is not at all sentimental. His tragic experience and its overcoming was conveyed in a discursive, dualistic system of writing, art-making and behavior. Life became material for myth while, in the hierarchy of his characters, he represented himself as a symbolic figure, opportunist and avenger.

In Lurie’s binary system, everything was multiplied or divided by two. His life chronology was also halved: before and after Rumbula. Before Rumbula, his existence is described in realistic terms, populated by real people. Post-Rumbula comes the time of ghosts and doubles. His mother’s double is his beloved dog, the German shepherd Punch, whom he calls Lady. In the

author’s mythic consciousness, she becomes the Capitoline Wolf. Under the influence of American mass culture, which Lurie sees as barbaric, his sister Jeanna is resurrected as Miss Rumbula.

His girlfriend Gertrude becomes his domineering father and, at the same time, Ljuba’s double.

Yet this time around, it is a diabolical Ljuba, who has regained her body and, with it, her sexuality.

Meanwhile, his elder sister Assya (later Countess Traffo), who had survived and not taken part in the tragic events of World War Two, is completely absent from his mythological system.

Boris Lurie, an autonomous and highly original presence in the landscape of modern art, is the last underground artist of the 20th century. He weaves together the influences of Dada, French libertinism, Russian avant-garde, American expressionism and left-wing postwar discourse and, with his «inconvenient» art art, raises a number of subjects. The most important among these are the roles and rights of women, politics and aesthetics, consumerism and the compromised ethics of artistic production divorced from its historical context.

Lurie’s memoirs describe real-life events. Yet filtered through the artist’s perception, they become poetry. Thanks to Boris Lurie, the dead regain their voices.

онкурс молодих художників — хвилююча та знайома ситуація. Але як визначити переможця у разі повної розмитості критеріїв оцінювання сучасного твору? Бо не секрет, що залежно від контексту та згідно з умовами консенсусу визначальних сторін мистецтвом сьогодні може бути визнане практично усе що завгодно. Борис Лур’є, здається, знайшов відповідь. У його романі «Дім Аніти», обираючи найкращого художника, героїня діє гранично просто й авангардно. Вона шикує юні обдарування у шерегу, наказує їм зняти труси та оголошує переможцем володаря найбільш уподобаного нею пеніса. Це прегарна сатира на устрій сучасного арт-світу, де майже неможливо відрізнити просто лайно від «лайна художника». Також — характерна для ХХ сторіччя віра у символічну силу статевого бажання й ілюзія, що сексуальність, яка не приховує своєї перверсивності, може повернути заблукалу у самій собі систему до ложа сякої-такої раціональності. Скульптурні об’єкти, що нагадують купи фекалій, і порнографічні романи з елементами BDSM — творчість Бориса Лур’є не для незайманих вихованок пансіону шляхетних дівчат. У світі, який пристрасно повертає поспільству право на лицемірність, його твори багатьох примушують здригатися. У смакуванні естетики потворності художника звинувачували ще понад півсторіччя тому. Сьогодні до тих нападок долучаються підозри у мізогінії, фетишизації та об’єктивації жіночого тіла. Реальний Борис Лур’є не вписується у стереотипний образ брутального мачо-сексиста. Його найбільш радикальні провокації — це передусім продукт травматичного особистого досвіду і запрошення замислитися над суперечливою природою людини та суспільства.

Свого часу Лур’є втрапив у нетрі художнього життя Нью-Йорка, де панував абстрактний експресіонізм, а потім і поп-арт. Художниця його кола, Яйої Кусама — сьогодні одна з найвідоміших авторок світу. Борису Лур’є нічого не заважало просто пливти за течією і зайняти своє місце серед пантеону великих імен нью-йоркського післявоєнного відродження. Однак він не шукав легких шляхів.

ompetition among young artists has always been a major part of the contemporary art scene. Yet how to choose the winner given the erosion of all criteria for evaluating works of modern art? It is no secret that depending on context and the decision-makers’ consent anything can be considered art today. Yet Boris Lurie seems to have found a solution. In his novel House of Anita, when picking the best artist, the heroine acts in a simple and unconventional manner. She lines up the young talents, orders them to take off their pants and declares the owner of the penis she likes best to be the winner. This is a superb satire on the state of the contemporary art world, where one is hard pressed to tell real shit from «Artist Shit.» It also shows faith in the symbolic force of sexual desire and the illusion that sexuality which does not conceal its perverse nature, can help place a mixed-up system back into its rational boundaries.

Boris Lurie’s art, which includes sculptures reminiscent of mounds of excrement and a pornographic novel with sadomasochistic elements, is not for the bashful. In a world reinstituting sanctimoniousness with a vengeance, his work may be offensive to many. More than half a century ago, the artist was already being accused of relishing the aesthetics of scandal. Today these accusations are compounded by insinuations of misogyny, fetishism and objectifying the female body. The real Boris Lurie hardly fits the stereotype of sexist, toxic masculinity. His most radical provocations are, first and foremost, the product of his highly traumatic personal experience and an invitation for us to ponder the contradictory nature of man and society.

keeping Lurie from going with the flow and eventually claiming his spot in the pantheon of New York’s postwar renaissance. Yet he was never one to do things the easy way.

Negative proof The adverb «not» plays a key role in the directions Lurie’s life kept taking. He did not become an acknowledged «genius» in his own time, did not make money from his art, did not curry favor with institutional functionaries and did not cash in on hot-button topics. He did not sleep nights and did not ever create a real family. He also liked to include the word «NO» in the titles of his works.

As a result, even the movement he created in the 1960s included this negation in its name: NO!art.

Lurie spoke out against art serving the market, went against the cultural establishment and, in the 1970s, wrote his emblematic essay «MOMA as Manipulator.»

Yet his story has the strangest twist. Lurie could have become part of the martyrology of modern art, had he died in a ditch from hunger and rejection by the powers-that-be of the contemporary art world. And yet — despite not having sold a single one of his works and loathing Pop art for its flirtation with consumer society, he still managed to become the embodiment of the American Dream. Having kept his art practice sacrosanct, Boris Lurie also secretly mastered the art of the stock market.

Lurie was an unusual person who existed outside of any system or standard career path. There were two main «nots» in his early life that forever defined his fate and the character of his art. He did not die in the Holocaust, nor did he forget all that happened to him and humanity as a whole

Про неможливість створювати мистецтво в такий спосіб, немовби нічого не сталося після світової війни, першим почав казати Теодор Адорно. Писати вірші після Освенциму — варварство, повторював він, бо зневірився у цілющих можливостях культури. Але ж дух віє, де схоче, як написано в одній мудрій книзі. Це переконливо довів великий поет ХХ сторіччя родом з маленького буковинського містечка Чернівці — Пауль Целан. Як і Борис Лур’є, він пережив концтабір і втратив під час Голокосту багатьох близьких. «Фуга смерті» Целана — антипоезія в тому ж сенсі, що твори Лур’є — антимистецтво. during the Second World War. He was an artist without formal training. The short time that he spent in a New York art school does not count — by that point, he had already learned all that he needed to know. His CV included very different universities — Salaspils, Stutthof, Buchenwald.

The four years he spent in those Nazi concentration camps, where they made soap out of people, provided plentiful experience for the young installation artist to be.

Art after the Holocaust The historian Eric Hobsbawm introduced the concept of the «short 20th century,» calling it «the Age of Extremes.» The Holocaust is one of the greatest tragedies of our time and a watershed moment in cultural history. The Futurists’ admiration for technological progress in the early 20th century, the concept of mass society, Nietzsche’s «Superman», idealistic avant-garde ideas — all this quickly turned into a monstrous dystopia. The twilight of the Enlightenment era was marked by the screams of millions of Nazi victims and the sound of gas chambers closing shut.

Is art after the Holocaust possible? This became one of the key questions in European society after World War II. History was split into a before and after. The concept of art as a construct of Western humanism was dealt a resounding blow. None of the lights of German culture and philosophy — Goethe, Schiller, Kant, Schopenhauer — could prevent their country from descending into fascism and genocide. At the same time, Europe remained mostly ignorant about Stalinist terror, collectivization, the Terror-Famine of 1932-33 in Ukraine and the actual number of those killed in the USSR during the Second World War. Today we talk of the anom-

alous mass desensitization that took over these societies in the 1930s and 1940s.

Theodor Adorno was the first to speak of the impossibility of creating art as if nothing had happened after the Second World War. Writing poetry after Auschwitz is barbaric, he used to say, having become disillusioned by the healing power of culture. And yet, the wind blows where it wishes, as the Bible says. The great twentieth-century poet Paul Celan, born in Czernowitz (now Ukraine), said as much. Like Boris Lurie, he survived the Holocaust concentration camps and lost many loved ones. His Death Fugue represents anti-poetry in the same way that Lurie’s works are anti-art. It is an attempt to speak the language of art in a world that had come face to face with human sadism and monstrosity.

Не хоче він і сприяти хтивому вуайєризму, що примушує знову і знову смакувати подробиці чужих страт. Він веде діалог із самим собою, займається самоаналізом і терапією. Глядач вільний у виборі: спостерігати за сеансом чи вийти з гри. Він може зробити для себе якісь висновки, але ніяк не здатний вплинути своєю думкою на результат того акту очищення від травми шляхом її проговорювання і проробляння ритуальних маніпуляцій, що отримав у нашому суспільстві маркер «сучасне мистецтво». Vassily Grossman’s «Life and Fate», Tadeusz Borowski’s «We Were in Auschwitz» and «The Diary of Anne Frank». Yet, unlike this literature on the subject of concentration camps and totalitarian regime crimes, his contemporary idiom appears, at first glance, more complex. It is less documentary-based and preoccupied not so much with facts as with intuitive perception.

We are, after all, wired in such a way that one powerful image of an event can shock us much more than a narrative account. All of church art, which for centuries has illustrated stories from the holy texts, is built on this premise. One thing is reading about the Last Judgment, quite another is seeing horned devils roasting sinners in fire pits.

Lurie has no intention to please or indulge the spectator’s imagination. Nor is he willing to cater to voyeuristic tendencies that prompt one to return, again and again, to the place of others’ suffering. Instead, he holds a dialog with himself, engaging in self-analysis and self-therapy. His audience can either watch the show or leave. They are free to come to certain conclusions but unable to influence the outcome of this act of trauma by the «ritual manipulation», which has acquired the name of modern art in our society.

Boris Lurie’s oeuvre begs the question: is this really art? Such a question, according to Eric Hobsbawm, «can only be asked by those who cannot admit that there is no longer a classic bourgeois conception of “the arts” even as the arts are being kept inside mausoleums.» Yes, after Hitler’s and Stalin’s camps, after decades of official socialist realist doctrine in the USSR and persecution of «degenerat art» in Nazi Germany, the artistic sphere in Europe received a broad spectrum of allowance. It became unseemly to

ask any questions of art. And still, is this art? At one time, Lurie called Hitler «the greatest artist» and groups of corpses «artistic assemblages». In this context, Lurie’s work is in fact, not art or, to use his own terminology, NO!art.

As America was going through an economic and cultural boom in the 1950s and early 60s, the questions that concerned Lurie, who had just escaped Nazi hell, appeared obscure and unnecessary. The artist was chided for being overly serious and gloomy. His macabre version of Pop art appeared too real, too inconvenient for the great artistic industry machine used to grinding anything into an easily digestible collectible object. Try as one might, it is impossible to make mantelpiece souvenirs out of Lurie’s works. Besides, the artist himself was too sophisticated and complex to find a common language with the movers and shakers of the art business.

It is hard to discuss a subject like the Holocaust without descending into gloomy pathos.

Yet, Lurie was not simply a victim, crying out about his trauma. He was a witty, subtle and lively individual who had gone through much at a young age and still managed to start a new life, to become an original figure in the New York art world, to write a novel and a long memoir and create the NO!art movement which to this day, a decade after his death, reminds a society tired of twentieth-century drama about the Nazi crimes. The one thing he was never able to do was to forget. His work eventually found greater understanding in those countries that knew the meaning of catastrophe from their own firsthand experiences.

Справді, концтабір не є позаземною формою життя. Це конструкт людського суспільства і в певному сенсі екстремальний згусток усього людського, навіть надто людського. Коли ми говоримо про табори і жахи нацизму, в усій тій історії найбільше вражає одне. Як і найстрашніші маніяки в історії, більшість призвідників та учасників цих подій — з медичної точки зору абсолютно «нормальні», психічно здорові люди. Концтабір як торжество норми і модель людського суспільства — ось що заворожує Бориса Лур’є. Вихід із тієї базової неможливості свободи простий і водночас гранично складний. Індивідуальний рецепт Лур’є — трансгресія. Якщо не можеш відвернутися від безодні, йди в пітьму і не бійся. Втеча від травми за межі норми з метою опанування території неможливого — ризикована, але дієва стратегія. На руїнах віри у мистецтво та людину долання соціальних заборон і моральних настанов у вигляді акту зловживання та надмірності, що відкриває сексуальність і «смерть Бога», перетворюється на фетиш. Батаєвський досвід «абсолютної негативності», що досягається в ході екстазу, безумства, оргазму, смерті — теми, суголосні Лур’є і його руху «NO!art». Підхід не 32

новий. Трансгресія як утеча від тоталітаризму проекту Просвітництва — фірмовий прийом головного лібертена західної культури — маркіза де Сада. Поетика Лур’є цілком у дусі його величного попередника-француза. Мабуть, найбільш знаменитий твір, де зроблено спробу психоаналітичного і імморального погляду на садомазохічну пристрасть родом з нацистських концтаборів, — шокова для сучасників кінострічка 1974 року «Нічний портьє» Ліліани Кавані. The concentration camp as a model of the world Years spent in the concentration camps forced Lurie to take a closer look at «free» society. Looking at the reality surrounding him in New York, this seeming «citadel» of permissiveness, he kept finding more and more parallels with the camps.

The concentration camp, far from an alien life form, is a construct of human society, an extreme concentration of all that is too human. When we discuss the camps and the horrors of Nazism, the one striking thing is that, just like the most terrible maniacs in the history of mankind, most of the perpetrators of these crimes were seemingly normal people.

Lurie was fascinated by the concentration camp as symbolizing the normalization of human wickedness as well as constituting a microcosm of human society. Finding a way to transcend the basic impossibility of freedom is at once simple and incredibly complicated. Lurie’s own recipe is transgression. If you cannot turn away from the abyss, then venture into the darkness without fear. Fleeing from trauma that transcends all bounds with the goal of conquering the territory of the impossible is, to him, a risky yet effective strategy. On the ruins of faith in art and humanity such transgression of social taboos and moral norms in the act of overindulgence that points to sexuality and «the death of God» in fact becomes a mode of behavior. Georges Bataille’s «absolute negativity» which occurs during ecstasy, insanity, orgasm or death is a phenomenon consonant with Lurie’s NO!art movement. This approach is not new. Transgression as a means of escape from the totalitarianism of the Enlightenment project was the signature move of the main libertine of Western culture — the Marquis de Sade. Lurie’s poetics are quite in line with his great French predecessor. Yet de Sade always speaks from the

point of view of the Master, while Lurie’s is the voice of one who, as destiny had it, was a victim; yet retained his common sense, wit and dignity.

Lurie’s greatest shock tactic was to combine such apparently incompatible subjects as the Holocaust and pornography. The conversation about the fundamental perversity, which happens when one person dons the mask of executioner and the other assumes the role of victim, and the concomitant sexual tension, was taken up in European society well after Lurie first broached it. The most famous work that attempts to take a psychoanalytical and amoral approach to the sadomasochistic passions of concentration camps is probably Liliana Cavani’s 1974 film The Night Porter.

Starting in the 1960s Lurie juxtaposed shots from concentration camps and vulgar pin-ups of naked women, that men all over the world used as masturbation aids. This was not only a critique of consumer society but also a reflection on the nature of totalitarianism. It was, as well, a very personal, even lyrical, statement. Knowing what had happened in Rumbula forest near Riga at the end of 1941, one knows why Boris Lurie could not sleep at night. There is no need for psychoanalysis to understand that, having lost his mother, sister, grandmother and first love, Lurie kept coming back to this subject in practically every work — it was the heart of darkness and the principal trauma of his life. The cheap pinups put next to concentration camp shots represent the confession of a young man, the most important women in whose life were taken away and killed, leaving him alone, on a camp bunk bed, with a magazine clipping showing an accidental female body part in his hands.

Віддаляючись у часі, примари минулого все сильніше вимучують нас. Яскравий приклад цьому — війна політик пам’яті, що розв’язалася останнім часом і в Україні, і в усьому світові. Сучасна людина з усіма своїми гаджетами у великих обсягах даних і штучному інтелекті стає дедалі вразливішою у питаннях минулого. На початку ХХ сторіччя божеством авангардистів було майбутнє. Фетиш початку XXI століття — минуле. Залишається сподіватися, що, як і віра футуристів у майбутнє, ця пристрасть до минулого не підштовхне людство на стежину чергового взаємознищення. У світі, що пережив катастрофу ХХ сторіччя, особливо вартісним є підхід Бориса Лур’є, який можна назвати апофатичним. Колись давно

Діонісій Ареопагіт стверджував, що є всього два засоби богопізнання. Один з них — віднесення Богу позитивних визначень: «Всесильний», «Благий» тощо. Другий — усвідомлення всіх визначень як неточних або помилкових, їх поступове заперечення з метою отримання відповіді на питання «що Бог НЕ є?» Це занурення в «божественний морок», з якого утаємниченим чином виступає справжній і невимовний притаманними людині засобами образ Істини, і є апофатика — шлях інтелектуальної аскези та стратегія «NO!art». В Україні трагедії, подібні тій, яка стала мотором творчості Бориса Лур’є, у короткому, але страшному ХХ сторіччі пережила практично кожна родина. У нас була своя Румбула — Бабин Яр у Києві, куди зігнали і де розстріляли сотні тисяч старих, жінок та дітей. Пам’ять про ці події намагалися заретушувати за часів радянщини, але вона виявилася сильнішою, ніж партійні директиви. А до того була Биківня й інші місця, де розстрілювали жертв сталінських репресій, жахлива за своїми обсягами колективізація і сотні інших трагедій. Їхній спадок донині мучить суспільство. Кому, як не нам, зрозумілий Борис Лур’є і його катастрофічне мислення. Мабуть, щоб поховати нарешті своїх покійників, потрібно вчитися у художника знову і знову без страху, сорому й сумнівів проговорювати ці травми та приймати світ в усій його амбівалентності.

The night of the world. Apophaticism as medicine fgainst the 20th century «Now, more than ever before, I hear the paradoxical opinion that, the further the horrors of the Holocaust recede into the past, the more do we not only distance ourselves from them, but also experience them more acutely, which has to do with the dynamic labeled “post-traumatic stress” by psychologists», writes the contemporary cultural historian Aleida Assmann. A long time ago Dionysius the Areopagite said that there are only two ways to know God. One is attributing positive characteristics to the divinity — «Almighty», «Blessed» etc. The other is realizing that all definitions are imprecise or false and gradually rejecting them in order to answer the question, «What is NOT God?» This descent into «divine gloom», out of which mysteriously emerges the genuine, ineffable image of the truth is apophatic theology — the path of intellectual asceticism and NO!art’s main strategy.

Almost every family in Ukraine in the short yet terrible 20th century lived through the kind of tragedy that became the catalyst for Boris Lurie’s art. We had our own Rumbula — Babi Yar in Kiev, where tens of thousands of Jews, mostly women and children were murdered. Before came Bykovnia and other places with great numbers of victims of Stalinist terror, collectivization with its staggering death toll and hundreds of other tragedies. In Soviet times there was an attempt to gloss over this collective memory, yet it proved stronger than any party directives. Its legacy still torments our society. So how can we, of all people, not understand Boris Lurie and his cata-

Інфернальний образ «людини-маски», людини, позбавленої людських якостей, виникає вже 1879 року у творчості Джеймса Енсора; між 1893-м і 1910-м роками Едвард Мунк пише свою серію «Крик», де екзистенціальний відчай теж передається через гримасу маски. Далі з’являються «Авіньйонські дівиці» Пікассо — твір, епохальний для історії сучасного мистецтва. Скульптура першої половини ХХ століття — від «Стовпів ніжності» Модільяні до «Невидимого об’єкта» Джакометті, «Архітектори», «Великий метафізик» де Кіріко — маски, маски, маски. Уся історія мистецтва ХХ століття — це історія маски, один з боків тотальної тенденції розособлювання індивідуума, перетворення його на об’єкт. лявоєнна людина починає відчувати себе не просто загубленою, але безповоротно зниклою, такою, що розчинилася в колективному несвідомому відчуття історичної провини та остаточної неможливості дати зрозумілий опис картини світу. Саме на початку 1960-х мистецтво переживає переломний момент відриву від реальності, коли та остаточно «попливла» перед очима. Є сенс провести три ключових паралелі. На початку 1960-х Герхард Ріхтер винаходить растр, що перекриває доступ до видимого. Таким чином художник постулює фундаментальну непізнаваність «розмитої реальності». Мистецтво більше нічого не відображає, але розпадається у власній істині. У своїх чорно-білих малюнках Ріхтер розмивав усе, значне і не дуже, підкреслюючи, що предмет живопису взагалі не має значення — від усміхненого портрета нациста «Дядька Руді» до сцен із порнографічних журналів... s Oscar Wilde once said, «Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.»

These words can be said to have foreshadowed the progression of modern art, in which humans are inevitably doomed to oblivion. The infernal image of the «masked man,» shorn of any human qualities, appeared as early as 1879 in the works of James Ensor. Between 1893 and 1910 Edvard Munch produced his Scream series, where existential despair was also conveyed through the grimace of a mask. Later, we see this phenomenon in Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, which defined a new epoch for modern art. Masks are omnipresent in the sculpture of the first half of the 20th century, spanning works like Modigliani’s Columns of Tenderness, Giacometti’s Hands Holding the Void (Invisible Object), and De Chirico’s The Archaeologists and The Great Metaphysician. The entire history of twentieth-century art is the history of the mask — it is one aspect of a broader tendency toward the effacement and dehumanization of the individual, the transformation of humans into objects.

Boris Lurie’s Altered Man series is thus emblematic in its prophetic vision, a verdict on the times he lived in. Lurie was among the first to capture

what had been in the air for some time: the disappearance of individuality, the entropy of the individual, and thus the entropy of reality. «Altered» is a euphemism. In reality, postwar man began to feel not just lost but irretrievably dematerialized, dissolved in the involuntary collective sense of historical guilt and in the complete impossibility to coherently capture and describe reality.

It is precisely during the 1960s, at the time that Lurie’s work was created, that the world of art was going through this critical moment of a dramatic separation, a parting, from reality. Three key parallels are worth noting.

In the early 1960s Gerhard Richter invented the «raster» dots technique, using pixelation to obscure the visible. In this way the artist postulated the fundamental unknowability of «blurred reality.» This art no longer aims to represent or reflect reality, but consists of its own truth. In his then black-and-white images Richter blurred everything, with meaning and without, underscoring that the work of art had no meaning at all — from the smiling Nazi Uncle Rudi to images from porn magazines.

Francis Bacon painted many, mostly male, portraits in the 1960s. As with Lurie, the face in these

Усе є плоть, і вона неминуче вразлива — ось вона, його наснажлива істина в останній інстанції. Його картини з купами людських кендюхів, що нагадують практику буддистських медитацій із мертвим тілом, примушують змиритися із думкою про власну скінченність та неминучі страждання. У 1964 році виникає «Син людський» Рене Магрітта — апофеоз розособлювання, знаменитий персонаж у котелку, обличчя якого закриває левітуюче яблуко. Сучасний «серійний» Адам міцно запакований у футляр власного конформізму. Набагато раніше, ще в 1937-му, Магрітт написав «Принцип задоволення» — портрет поета, аристократа і покро-

вителя сюрреалістів Едварда Джеймса. Портрет написаний за фотографією Ман Рея. Джеймс сидить за столом, його голова — згусток світла. Ще більш ранні та більш відомі прецеденти «розособлювання» — це два варіанти «Коханців» (1928), голови яких закутані тканиною. Ці речі досі не підлягають однозначному розшифруванню — про що це? Дослідники пишуть також про дитячу травму художника — його мати стрибнула з моста в річку, замотавши обличчя тканиною. Але справжні мотивації художника так і залишаються загадкою. Як істинний спадкоємець метафізичної традиції, Магрітт був майстром заплутування слідів, створення суперечностей між видимим і прихованим: «Усе видиме щось приховує; ми завжди хочемо роздивитися приховане за тим, що бачимо. Цей інтерес може набути форми доволі суперечливого почуття, своєрідного конфлікту між видимим-прихованим і видимим-вірогідним». Борис Лур’є не був метафізиком, як Магрітт — радше навпаки. Його серія «Змінена людина» говорить про кінець усякої метафізики, яка «неможлива після Освенциму». Морально виправданим у ситуації «тотального концтабору» є тільки бунт. Лур’є бунтує проти буржуазно-ринкових цінностей — моральних, естетичних, інституціональних. Ця серія Лур’є — дадаїстський жест знищення ненависного об’єкта чи персонажа через його перелицьовування/позбування обличчя, нейтралізацію світового зла в усіх його проявах, витирання з лиця землі, викреслювання з історії. Але кого витирає Лур’є? Його ім’я — Генрі Кебот-Лодж-молодший. Це політик та військовий, американський посол у В’єтнамі та в ООН, з подачі якого в 1964 році почалося повномасштабне вторгнення у В’єтнам. На його місці може бути Адольф Гітлер або ще хтось із тих, хто, своєю чергою, витирає з історії окрему людину. Лур’є експресивно записує — перетворює на ніщо —

works disappeared, turning into a mask — either a mask of impossible suffering or a mask of ecstatic pleasure. Instead of the familiar pursuit in art of individualism and images that are a «mirror of the soul», we get the supra-personal — in essence images that are death masks. In his The Logic of Sensation Gilles Deleuze described Bacon’s characters as deboned and inverted flesh. Indeed, Bacon reached a certain point of no return in his theater of morbid corporeality. More daring than all other representatives of the London School, including Lucian Freud, in his art Bacon peered into the existential abyss of radical agnosticism.

All is flesh and flesh is inevitably vulnerable — that was the ne plus ultra truth that inspired him.

His paintings with their organic heaps of human refuse, reminiscent of Buddhist meditations over dead bodies, force one to come to terms with mortality and the inevitability of suffering.

In 1964 René Magritte created his The Son of Man — an apotheosis of depersonalization, the famous figure in a bowler hat whose face is covered by a levitating apple. This contemporary «serial» Adam is securely packaged in the case of his own conformity. Much earlier, in 1937, Magritte painted The Pleasure Principle — a portrait of Edward James, the poet, aristocrat and patron of Surrealists, based on a photograph

by Man Ray. In the painting, James sits at a table, his face obscured by a mass of light. There were even earlier and more famous examples of depersonalization in Magritte’s work — two versions of The Lovers (1928), where the heads are covered by a piece of cloth. There is still no consensus on the meaning of these images. Scholars have posited the connection with a childhood trauma — the painter’s mother committed suicide by drowning herself; she jumped into the river, her head wrapped in a cloth. Yet, Magritte’s true motivations remain a mystery. As a true heir of the metaphysical tradition, he was a master of covering his traces, of creating a paradox of the visible versus the hidden. «Everything

we see hides another thing; we always want to see what is hidden by what we see. There is an interest in that which is hidden and which the visible does not show us. This interest can take the form of a quite intense feeling, a sort of conflict, one might say, between the visible that is hidden and the visible that is present.»

Boris Lurie was not a metaphysician like Magritte — rather the opposite. His Altered Man series speaks to an end of all metaphysics, which are «impossible after Auschwitz.» Only rebellion is justifiable after the «total concentration camp.» Lurie rebelled against bourgeois materialistic values — moral, aesthetic as well as institutional. This series by Lurie is a Dada-like gesture of the destruction of the hated object or character by means of depersonification/defacement, thus neutralizing evil in all its aspects, effacing it from the world, and deleting it from history. Yet whom does Lurie erase? In particular, it is Henry Cabot Lodge Jr., the United States politician and ambassador to Vietnam and the U.N., who was a leading player in America’s 1964 incursion into Vietnam. For Lurie, anyone who disregards the

Перша стадія знищення та розособлювання токсичного, фетишизованого офіційною ідеологією образу Кебота-Лоджа — це перетворення його на мішень. Офіційний портрет благообразного, але із жорстко підібганими губами, що засвідчують його жорстокість, кандидата в президенти (він програв Кеннеді) «розстрілюється» словами «NO». Далі — ще більше мальовничих вольностей. Криваво-сексуальний експресивний варіант — обличчя залите рідкою червоною фарбою, що якось одразу асоціюється із кров’ю солдатів, які загинули у В’єтнамі. Замість губів, які нагадують щілину поштової скриньки (визначення Діккенса), розквітає червоний бутон, а замість

очної западини — перевернута pin-up girl, куди ж без неї... Інший варіант — денний: сяюча голова, помітно наснажена Магріттовим портретом Едварда Джеймса і така, що нагадує беконівських «мутантів». Витираючи обличчя, Лур’є залишає впізнаною потворну щілину губів... Нічний варіант із синім тлом — обличчя, затягнуте чимось чорним: або ж маскою для секс-ігор, або ж просто чорною тканиною. Про що все це? Маски Кебота-Лоджа непроникні — це не маски радощів, страждання, болю чи страху. Вони не більш непроникні, ніж його власне обличчя на фотографії та всі інші «покерні фейси» політиків, які обіцяють золоті гори, що в реальності призводить до катастроф народів. Японський письменник Кобо Абе у своїй книзі «Четвертий льодовиковий період» висловив думку про те, що «найжахливіша з примар — це трохи змінений лик гарного знайомого». Ця серія примарних ликів у портретах Лур’є справді лякає непізнанністю реальності, замкнутістю образу на самому собі, котру тематизували всі найпрогресивніші художники того часу. Зникає основна функція мистецтва, тому що відображати більше нема чого. Довкола — порожнеча, і залишається одне — перекачувати її з пустого у порожнє.

Лур’є каже НІ Відомо, що Лур’є не йшов на жодні компроміси з арт-ринком — він не продавав власних робіт. Мистецтво було для нього територією свободи, незаангажованого промовляння. Робочою стратегією Лур’є обирає жорстку критику і виставляє лише нон-профітні речі, на кшталт куп «лайна», у створеній ним же разом із однодумцями Семом Гудманом і Стенлі Фішером Маrch Gallery. Вони кажуть «Ні» «продажному» світу мистецтва і об’єднуються 1959 року в групу «NO!art», яка проіснувала до 1964 року. Протестні рухи такого роду, що виступають проти суспільства споживання, «чудовими в якому стають тільки його відходи»,

human being, Hitler included, could take Cabot Lodge’s place. Lurie dramatically paints over — turns into nothing — this portrait of an influential and mighty man, the representative of a world power that, in Lurie’s vision, was bent on universal domination. This is a reference to the Freudian symbolic murder of the person with false values, the patricide. Thus, Robert Rauschenberg erases Willem de Kooning’s drawing, and Marcel Duchamp defaces the Mona Lisa by adding a moustache. In the methodology of his art Lurie is close to both of them, but primarily to Duchamp as a fellow debunker of the art system.

aster. The Japanese author Kobo Abe in his work Ice Age 4 said that «the most terrifying ghost has the slightly altered appearance of a person one knows well.» This series of ghostlike faces in Lurie’s portraits is indeed frightening in the unrecognizability of their reality and the image’s concentration on itself, a theme taken up by the most progressive artists of the time. The principal function of art — reflection — disappears, since there is nothing to reflect, and all around there is nothing but emptiness and facelessness.

Lurie says NO! The first step in destroying and depersonalizing the toxic image of Henry Cabot Lodge, fetishized by the state, is turning him into a target. The official portrait of the vice-presidential candidate (he was on the ticket that lost to John F. Kennedy), handsome but with thin, tightly pursed lips that hint at his cruelty, is «shot through» with the word «NO.» There is more artistic license in other versions. The bloodier sexually expressive variant of the work features Cabot Lodge’s face smeared with liquid red paint, which immediately brings to mind the blood of soldiers who died in Vietnam. His lips, which resemble a post office slot (as per Dickens’ Pip in The Great Expectations) are replaced by a red bud, while inside his eye sockets is the familiar pin-up girl. Another version is suffused with the light of day: a lit-up head clearly influenced by Magritte’s portrait of Edward James and quite reminiscent of Bacon’s «mutants.»

The nocturnal version of the painting, with its blue background, has Cabot Lodge’s face covered by something black — either a sex game mask, or a simple cloth. What is this all about?

Cabot Lodge’s masks are inscrutable — they do not convey joy, suffering, pain, or fear. They are no less inscrutable than the original’s face in photographs and the poker faces of politicians who promise the moon and the stars, but lead their nations to dis-

It is well known that Boris Lurie was a principled opponent of the art market, and refused to sell his works. Art was for him a terrain of freedom, of independent expression. Lurie chose tough criticism as his mode of work and exhibited exclusively non-commercial art objects such as Shit Sculpture (an imitation of excrement), at the March Gallery that he created with like-minded artists Sam Goodman and Stanley Fisher. They said «no» to the «sell-out» art world and united as the NO!art group, which lasted from 1959 to 1964.

Ланцюг став ключовим символом і в художній, і в літературній творчості Лур’є, котрі тісно переплітаються: головна дія його порнографічного роману «Дім Аніти» відбувається в галереї — за сумісництвом садомазохістському борделі, що, по суті, одне й те саме. Світ як концтабір, де люди безжально знищують схожих на себе, світ як бордель, де людина (конкретно — жінка) перетворюється на об’єкт — це видіння стало нервом мистецтва Лур’є. Цю модель людського існування десятиліттями пізніше було докладно описано у відомій філософській праці «HOMO SACER. Суверенна влада і голе життя» італійця Джорджо Агамбена. Лур’є, який пережив Голокост, був художником травми. Творчість таких людей — завжди надривний протест проти розпаду світу, можливість каналізувати свій біль. Як писала Луїз Буржуа: «Що зі мною було б, якби не мистецтво? Сила емоцій розірвала б мене іззовні...» Щоб зберегти цілісність своєї свідомості, Лур’є розриває свідомість глядача, його know how. У роботі «Залізничний колаж» він доводить дадаїстсько-сюрреалістський принцип сумісності несумісного, укладеного у формулі Лотреамона «зустріч парасольки та швацької машинки на анатомічному столі», до максимальної напруги й абсурду. Лур’є поєднує звалені докупи табірні трупи із зображен-

ням роздягнутих красунь у манері pin-up. Але це не просто драма сумісності двох головних полюсів буття, Ероса і Танатоса; усе набагато глибше, жінка тут — це він сам. Тут наявні одночасно два символи: символ насильства і символ жертви єврейського народу. Чому жінка? На долю жінок у цьому світі випадає більше страждань — у 1941-му в лісі Румбула під Ригою були розстріляні його мати, сестра, бабуся і перше кохання, а він з батьком чотири роки кочував по концтаборах Європи. Саме за лінією складної гри сенсу проходить вододіл із поп-артом: pin-up girl у Лур’є — це зовсім не те, що pin-up girl у характерних представників поп-арту, від «іграшки багатія» Едуардо Паолоцці до «медсестер» Річарда Прінса. У поп-арті, який успадковує рекламні технології, будь-який зображений об’єкт призначений маніпулювати бажанням. Поп-арт веде негласний торг, пропонує спокусливі образи до візуального споживання. У Лур’є pin-ups не є об’єктами бажання. Точніше, не тільки об’єктами бажання, якими вони автоматично стають. Жінка у Лур’є знаходиться в тому самому символічному локусі, де традиційно перебував образ Ісуса Христа — скажімо, у мистецтві експресіоністів, які пережили жахи Першої світової. Далеко не всім щастить зберегти віру в божественне провидіння та справедливість. Після всього побаченого Лур’є, схоже, став радикальним агностиком і нігілістом — звідти це непереборне бажання випльовувати в обличчя усім довкола тільки одне слово: «Ні, ні і ні».

Such protests against consumer culture, «in which only the refuse was beautiful» were a sign of the times. One could almost call it a fashionable trend, if the phrase was not so ironic in this context. A year after its creation, in 1960, Pierre Restany founded the Nouveau Réalisme group in Paris, while 1967 saw the creation of the Arte Povera group, based on the writings of Germano Celant. But these European protest movements were very quickly absorbed by the art market.

Meanwhile, Lurie did not let his guard down when faced with the «multi-headed Hydra» of the art world. Until the end of his life he did not let commercial forces have any role in his relationship with his art: «The artist has nothing to lose but his chains, the very same chains which have imprisoned artists today and yesterday, and which stretch all the way to the Renaissance and earlier periods, and back into our own era — an era fraudulently sold as the period of greatest flowering of the arts... produced by a chain-gang of trained servant artists.» (“Shit No!” 1970) The chain became a key symbol in both his art and his writing, which were intertwined. The main action in his pornographic novel House of Anita takes place in an art gallery which doubles as a sadomasochistic brothel — they are basically one and the same.

The world as a concentration camp, in which people ruthlessly destroy one another, the world as a brothel, in which humans, particularly women, are objectified — this was the touchstone, the thread running through Lurie’s art. Decades later, the Italian Giorgio Agamben described this model of existence in his famous philosophical work Homo Sacer: Sovereign Power and Bare Life (1995). Lurie, the Holocaust survivor, was a trauma artist. The art of such individuals represents a heart-wrenching protest cry against the destruction of the world and serves as a way to process and channel their pain. As Louise Bourgeois wrote, «What would have happened to me were it not for art? The strength of my emotions would have destroyed me from the inside....» To preserve the integrity of his consciousness Lurie explodes the consciousness of his audience. In his Railroad Collage Lurie combines piled-up

corpses in concentration camps with images of pin-up girls. He is true to the Dada-Surrealist principle of combining incompatible objects, as per Lautréamont’s formula, «Chance Meeting on a Dissecting Table of a Sewing Machine and an Umbrella.» Lurie takes it to the maximum, to the point of absurdity.

This is not just a simple juxtaposition of two opposing poles of being, Eros and Thanatos, but a more profound statement. In this dual symbolism — of violence and the victimization of the Jewish people — he is the woman. Let us not forget that Lurie lost his mother, grandmother, sister and first love in the 1941 Rumbula massacre, while he and his father struggled to survive in concentration camps for four years. This complicated play on symbolic meaning explains Lurie’s difference from Pop Art. Lurie’s pin-up girl is very different from the similar character created by the more typical representatives of the Pop Art movement, such as Eduardo Paolozzi’s «Rich Man’s Plaything» or Richard Prince’s «Nurses.»

On the first or second day of the coldest December ever, amidst the snow and ice and the bodies from the First Aktion — shot old people and babies — the Ghetto police grab me to help move the dead. High walls around that cemetery reach into heaven. Inside, in the snow, frozen in pinkish-blue colors like wax figures, are the bodies of tiny babies and older men and women. It is just a day or two after the First Aktion. These are the first bodies I have seen. They weigh a ton each. I haven’t the strength to lift them.

My feet and hands freeze. I «work» for a while, and then I chicken out and leave through the gate of the cemetery. The old Jew hands out a half loaf of black bread to each worker who has finished. I remember I had the decency not to take the bread, having shirked the work. But then there was still plenty of food at my mother’s house — the last reserves had not yet been devoured, despite our efforts — so even in that I am no great hero. I did make a painting of that walled cemetery, but just from the outside — the inside was too much for me to handle.

На всій вулиці Маскавас, що вела просто до шосе на Даугавпілс, гори сердець. Вимоклі у сирій нафті та вкриті бензином, палаючі, вони повинні палати дуже довго, усі довжелезні 9 чи 10 кілометрів до Румбули. А там уже нічого класти не треба.

Take hearts of calves, uncooked, and lay them out at intervals along the Ghetto fences where the shootings took place. Then lay one in each doorway, where people were moved out towards evacuation.

Lay a heart as well in every doorway in what later became the German Ghetto. A calf’s heart in each doorway... a bunch of them in the entrance to the Women’s House, where the children were taken away.

A small mountain of calf’s hearts in the park where the old Jewish cemetery used to be. Make sure the strolling pedestrians with baby carriages have to step over them while passing through the park. Hearts in pairs with burning candles all the way along Ludzas Street, up to the Ghetto fence that was cut open and remained so for some time, where the columns of the two Aktionen were lead out to Rumbula. All the way along Maskavas Street leading into the Daugavpils Highway, mountains of hearts, soaking in crude oil covered with gasoline, burning, meant to burn for a very long time, along the entire 9 or 10 kilometers to Rumbula. But there do not put a thing.

There is one memory that this author tries to avoid, even more than he does the events of early morning December 8, 1941 — hidden in white snow thirty-five years ago.

My classmate Ljuba Treskunova is the name of my real love. For years I was in love with her face.

She is quiet and bashful, one of the best students in class. Her lips are wide and full. Her hair is darkblonde and strong. She is blossoming out with big round breasts. She has small fingers with shortcut nails, and smells of clean soap. I loved no other girl like her, though many excited me. I am sure I would have married her. But I am shy and for years feared approaching my Ljuba, am unable to even speak to her.

I like her home, too, her mother, and her older, beautiful, tall sister. Her father has a fancy tobacco store on Freedom Street. They live in a kind of suburban bliss that I envy badly. Theirs is a seemingly wellordered life.

Right after the German occupation the first area to be cleaned of Jews is suburban where Ljuba lives.

The Treskunov family is arrested and taken to the Central Jail. Her father is shot, probably immediately.

A few weeks later we all have to move to the Ghetto. The apartments in our house have been marked Beschlagnahmt (requisitioned) by the Wehrmacht.

In the Ghetto Ljuba is now only two flights above me. During this time, where going out is dangerous for Jews, we see each other often. She stays in my room for hours, and I hold her hand. I don’t believe I kissed her. But my cheek brushed against her hair. No one disturbs us, though the world has gone surreal outside. We hardly speak. She leans her head against my chest. I can still feel the soft touch of her sweater.

Storage bins have gone up where there was nothing but a snowy hill. The house is full of people.

In that snowy nothing I stand, embracing Ljuba, my love. Her mother had earlier asked me for advice on what to do, how to cope. What could I, a sixteen-year-old tell her? How could I help? Ljuba, her beautiful, tall, blonde sister Esya, and her mother are all alone, already jailed twice. That time they got out because a German Navy officer liked Esya’s reply to his question, how many German soldiers had she murdered — her reply: not one, so far.

Second time they went to jail was November-December 1941, right before the Aktionen; they managed to get in amongst a group of seamstresses. The thinking was that these seamstresses, being important 49

for their work, would not be deported — and rightly so. They spent a few days in terribly cramped quarters in a jail outside the Ghetto.

Selections were made; the Treskunovs were not amongst those selected. Now they are in the Ghetto and have a pretty good room, but apparently no food whatsoever. But they never weakened from starvation, for Rumbula came before any such thing could occur.

I embrace Ljuba in the empty snow covered courtyard on Maza Kalnu Street. She kisses me with great warmth. We stand leaning against each other. One of the very rare embraces, and our last. A few days later Ljuba is gone.

Of course, Ljuba never died, she was never killed at Rumbula... She smiles; what is she smiling about?

The onslaught of feminine maturity? Wide, still heart-shaped lips. And she looks me straight in the eye.

And she affects my heart physically, as if she had touched me there with her hand. I am convinced that the photograph is alive. It not only grabs my heart, but also grabs my innards with pincers.

How did she come to her end? Relate it step by-step. She is naked there, there with all the other women. She must have been shivering on that terribly cold EIGHTH OF DECEMBER, barefoot, of course, in the snow. It must have been a very long wait, probably hours and hours. And how did she get the shot? Sprayed by artillery or a machine gun? Sprayed all over indiscriminately? Or, in another fashion, maybe lined up in a group, next to her mother and older sister Esya, face forward, facing the mass grave half-full of the dead and almost dead, then shot in the neck by the Latvian policeman — that would have been very considerate. Did she fall face down on top of the others in the grave? All that naked feminine flesh, still warm...

My benumbed attraction with the art of striptease in the Western World, my fascination with it mesmerizes me as if by a cobra. Mental relief despite the sexual torture, the great mental relief is in my head. Reliving perhaps the greatest striptease of all time at Rumbula forest, only I did not know it then.

The calm, controlled gratification when piercing a round, well-padded female behind with my pistol, while pressing the shape to me, then releasing it. And then the shape comes back onto the pistol for more, by itself! I am the Latvian policeman. Only, I did not know it. Even better, to grab the head by the hair and bring it close to me; the ass then follows. *** Life’s central experience is like a gift, tied up and neatly packaged ready for shipment. A label lists the contents like a postal declaration. Such a small package, it takes up very little space. After you have mailed it, what is left? Labeled in Soviet style: Country: USSR, Town: Riga.

Кому: Мертвому і тому, хто помре. *** Після другої великої акції 8 грудня колючий дріт на протилежному кінці гетто кілька днів стояв розпатраний навстіж. Там наших людей вели до лісу Румбула. Тепер ми проходимо тим самим місцем крізь розчахнутий паркан, підсумовуючи своє життя. Зрізаний дріт не веде на волю, він веде у смерть.

After the second large Aktion on December 8, the barbed wire at the far end of the Ghetto complex remained cut open for several days. Our people had been led through there on their way to Rumbula.

Now we walk through that very same spot of open fence as a shortcut to our work. Barbed wire cut open does not lead to freedom, but to death.

Rumbula Access to the Rumbula graves from the Moscow Highway has supposedly been cut off, so as to make the «deep in the forest» place inaccessible to visitors. It is said that one must know the exact location of the graves, and get there through the forest. My guide says that she will ask her father, who knows how to get there. But on the way back from Salaspils, across from the new Rumbula Airport, I notice a small inconspicuous black and white sign by the wayside. We slow down and make a U-turn to read it: «Graves of victims of Fascism» — pointing up an asphalted road into the forest. The rumors then were unfounded — Rumbula is still open, but only to the initiated: «RUMBULA FOREST MEMORIAL, MASKAVAS IELA, RIGA, LATVIA» ***

Але на зворотному шляху до Саласпілсу, просто навпроти нового аеропорту Румбула, я бачу малу та непомітну чорно-білу дощечку на узбіччі. Ми гальмуємо і розвертаємося, щоб прочитати оце: «Поховання жертв фашизму» — дороговказ на асфальтовану доріжку у ліс. Поголос даремний — Румбулу відкрито, але тільки посвяченим: «Румбульський лісовий меморіал, вулиця Маскавас, Рига, Латвія». Ось деякі меморіальні написи і таблички з ефектом на кшталт: тут політичні в’язні, представники багатьох радянських та європейських народів, знайшли свій кінець. Євреї, як завжди, наприкінці напису. Jews, as is customary, are mentioned just before the end of the inscription. The camp itself was built by German, Austrian, and Czech Jews in freezing weather, near the Daugava River under unbelievably harsh conditions and the sadistic tortures of SS Sturmbahnführer Dr. Rudolf Lange.

The graves are on top of small hills — for ease of digging, or for rain-flow? The pine trees seem young; were they really there thirty-five years ago?

I measure, make notations — my guide watches, upset. I am sorry to impose all of this on her, but then she is a Jew, she should also suffer. A mad technical analysis has overtaken me, masking my hysterical, disturbed state. I cannot figure out how the thing was organized. How in such a short time — a day at the most — in such limited space, could more than 10,000 people be executed? Did they have to wait in line?

How will I be able to incorporate this Rumbula into my life? How? It was done at a running pace — how could it be done at running pace?

How to explain the fact that the six graves hold almost 50,000 people: a marvel of miniaturization before semiconductors?

A whole town! I feel that the logical thing to do now would be to lie down on top of any one of these graves — who can say in which one my mother, my sister and Ljuba is buried — and shoot a bullet into my head, thirty five-years later!

Or even better, to kneel, Japanese style, and put a knife in your stomach. Or I could hold a knife on the ground with both hands, and throw myself on it, the knife doing its work while I collapse and bleed like a lover on top of his mistress. Yes, this is the only way to incorporate Rumbula or to be incorporated into it.

I see myself like a penitent Christian, every year on the Eighth of December, carrying a huge wooden Star-of-David all the way from Ghetto to Rumbula forest. *** Mrs. Frida Michelson, survivor of Rumbula, describes the road that the columns took on their way from the Ghetto. On my visit to Riga I tried to walk a part of that way down the street, through where the cutopen ybarbed wire fence was. Then a right turn down a hill. The way was vicious, covered with ice. People slipped, they were driven on, afraid to stop. Then they were ordered to drop their packs at the Ghetto exit, by the torn-open barbed wire fence.

A woman asks the SS guard whether she can keep something. He answers by saying that where they are going, all will eat out of the same pot. Did the guards shoot any of the slow movers as they left the Ghetto, in perfect view of civilian passers-by? Mrs. Michelson does not shed much light on this. She describes another turn, much later, about 8 kilometers out of Riga, at the Skirotava railroad station. There were optimistic rumors that trains at the station were awaiting the evacuees for further transport. From a hill one could see most of the column of more than 10,000 people stretching almost to the Ghetto.

Frida Michelson relates that machine gun crackle could be clearly heard coming from the Rumbula forest. But the columns went on, chased and terrorized by the Latvian guards, made to move quickly, to almost run. What went through the minds of those people? How could they have suspected the slaughter ahead? They may have removed it from their conscious mind, preferring to believe that the ones who got through unscathed, could reach the awaiting trains to go into evacuation.

At Rumbula they were ordered to undress, to remove their clothing and place it into separate piles. All that orderliness was imposed by loud yelling, «faster, faster» and beatings, at breakneck speed. By that time, their exhaustion both mental and physical, and their hopelessness, was so great that they willingly cooperated with their murderers. Before that, lacking any organization, it was everyone for himself, for his family and friends. The fallen were helped and dragged along, in part because they were a target for the guards. Bullets don’t discriminate between straggler and marcher. Had they been organized, these masses of women, children and old people — they could have attacked, bitten and scratched the brutes to death. But of course they would have all died in the end anyway.

A German Jewish woman cries out, «I die for Germany!» An old man screams, «Shema Yisrael!» While they are ordered to take off their overcoats the woman continues to yell. The others in the column

Ось оманливий напис: «50,000 людей багатьох національностей, радянські громадяни, військовополонені та інші були по-звірячому замордовані тут фашистами». Те «інші» стосується 40 тисяч убитих євреїв. От іще напис: «Жертвам фашизму». Перший напис — латиською, другий — російською і тільки потім — після зрозумілого тиску та нагадувань з боку ризької єврейської громади — ідишем. Оце й усе. *** На стіні поблизу мого письмового столу, прикріплена до важкої картонної коробки, висить світлина моєї сестри Жанни у віці п’ятнадцяти чи шістнадцяти років. Вона була красива дівчина, найкраща дівчина свого класу. Міс Румбула — вистрілює у мене в мізках. Ха-ха, Mіс Румбула! Це в мене таке бажання усе поставити на місця: Galgenhumor — німецьке слово для визначення чорного гумору біля шибениці. За відсутності більш приємних визначень, так, Жанно, так склалося, ти найгарніша, найпопулярніша дівчина Румбули. Mіс Румбула. Жити за будь-яку ціну! Концентраційні табори почали беззастережно показувати у кіно, скажімо, «Нічний портьє» чи «Сім красунь». are angry that she is yelling, for this might bring on disaster to them all. At this point one is still selfpossessed. There are policemen in charge of each station of undress: one for the coats, another for dresses, a third for underclothes — «Why aren’t you undressed yet? Faster, faster!» They chase them from one station to the next and in the end the Jews run into the grave.

For over thirty years the execution sites were hidden in the depths of huge primeval forests, in snowstorms, or under cover of fog so thick one could not see through it. For a long time we still believed that the people — or at least some of them — had actually been evacuated elsewhere. Lublin and Auschwitz were mentioned, but the truth was much simpler, much less mysterious — a little pine forest a short distance away with a few small hills, just a few paces from the main highway. There it is: six averagesized mass graves, one of them half the size of the others, the so-called Children’s Grave. You can walk around the whole area in just a few minutes. There is one misleading marker: «50,000 people of various nationalities, Soviet citizens, war prisoners, and others have been cruelly martyred here by the Fascists.» The «others» refers to the 40,000 murdered Jews. Then another marker: «To the Victims of Fascism» — first in Latvian, then in Russian, only then — after considerable fighting and pressure by the Riga Jewish community — in Yiddish. That is all. *** On the wall near my desk, pinned to heavy cardboard, is a photo of my sister Jeanna when she was about fifteen or sixteen. She was a beautiful girl, the most popular girl in her class: Miss Rumbula shoots through my mind. Ha-ha, Miss Rumbula!

There must be a means of putting everything in its proper place: Galgenhumor, the German word for gallows humor. For lack of any better options, yes, Jeanna, you see, you are the prettiest, most popular girl at Rumbula. Miss Rumbula. I tease you now, the way you teased me about being fat, making my life miserable. But it is entirely possible that you really are the prettiest among the beauties of Rumbula. Who can say?

Now I understand why Riga has lost all its vivacious beauty, class, and glamour. My sister Jeanna isn’t there anymore, not even her memory. It was she who gave Riga that sensual feeling, Her full perfect feminine shape, her longish black hair, her constant movement, smiling, laughing; she seemed to enjoy every moment. It is dull and dreary there now without Jeanna. I have a photo of her, accompanied by a classmate, wearing a fantastic, ingeniously designed short coat and carrying her school briefcase. She is on the bridge, next to the Freedom Monument, across from the Otto Schwarz Clock. She seems to be rushing, stops and smiles at the camera, peevish yet coquettish. It is just another snapshot; life is her oyster, beauty and youth forever. No Jeanna, I did not even feel you there at Rumbula. That place is too dreary for you. You must have flown away to friendlier a clime.

To live at any cost!

Concentration camps seem to have come back in full force in the movies, just take The Night Porter and Seven Beauties, for example. Thirty years later the concentration camps have become the artistic avant-garde! It only took a quarter century of cultural unfashionableness. Now, in the mid-seventies, after the cultural revolution of the sixties, they are the thing, a very good thing. Nacht und Nebel (Night and Fog), was the Nazi program of abductions and disappearances. But what of the post-war, left-wing conservative artists, the Nacht und Nebel New York NO-artists working in new forms with concentration camp subject matter in 1960? They were premature. At that time the subject was left dormant. Why? The will to live — Freud called it the libido. Frida Michelson had it. She wanted to live at any cost! She tore her hair out when she realized they were going to be killed, mad with the will to live, she writes.

The few Jews who returned from German concentration camps were often asked: «Why did you not join the guerillas?» But in Riga, Latvia, there were practically no guerrillas! Almost the entire populace collaborated with the Germans and was very happy for the most part, or at least indifferent to the slaughter. In fact, many Jews who did manage to join partisans in other areas were killed by the partisans they had joined!

Burial-and-unburial A voice told me in early December 1941, when they brought the first German Jews to the emptied Riga Ghetto, right after the Aktion against our Latvian Jews, that a German-Jewish burial-and-unburial team had arrived. In the cellar of an old building in a dead-end Ghetto corner they had started their task, 55

Або ж ота пісня партизан з Вільно — просто оперна арія? Мрія про партизанську пісню дарує надію, що партизани десь поблизу, пліч-о-пліч. Колону ведуть до смерті, але з лісу якимось дивом постають партизани з автоматами — «не падайте духом, браття, ми тут!» Німці біжать, а поневолені, люди гетто — жінки, діти та старі — на волі. Нехай свинцеві хмари застують блакить. Ця мить не є твоя остання мить, Чекати довго, важко та несила, Ось наші кроки: ми вже тут, катам могила! Який чудовий, омріяний фінал, як у гарному фільмі; коли б усе це так і було. Але Шелкан співає чудово, це справді народне мистецтво! У його цілющій силі нічого дивного нема. Кожен відчуває піднесення: від неосвічених шевців до капіталістів-початківців директорів фабрики. «Тихіше, Шелкан співає!»

rather loosely circumscribed by the authorities. It was a burial team made up of artistic and bohemian elements freshly brought in from Germany, artists of a sensuous and highly erotic, decadent nature. The leader was a young woman called, if I heard correctly, Marie, who was particularly lively, and energetic, and even passionate about her work. She regarded the burial-and-unburial of people as a highly artistic and inspiring task. Now it so happened that during unburial members of the team dug up two unusually beautiful coupled corpses, lovers in the midst of a frozen embrace. The thing was absolutely a work of beauty. They tried to take them apart, but while attempting the uncoupling, the male corpse broke in many parts and had to be discarded. In pursuit of beauty the burial-unburial-team by chance found a handsome German-Jew youth living in the very same Ghetto neighborhood. Poor thing, they killed him, and coupled him with the female corpse deprived of her mate.

We didn’t like our mothers In 1941 when people disappeared, we were lucky it hadn’t been us. Since somebody had to go, it was a good thing that they went instead of us. Then they disappeared by the thousands and we thought they had bought our peace and our lives. But in 1943 the ones who had disappeared into the grey mists began demanding that we join them. The Germans started opening up the graves and burning the remnants.

This was done by Jewish work gangs, chained together. If they did not become infected and die, they were shot after their work had been done. When we heard about this we didn’t like the dead. We felt the dead had handed us the bill to pay, for having been left alive. We did not like these dead Jews pointing their accusing fingers at us and beckoning us to join them. Such a long time had passed, and it had cost so much trouble just to survive as work slaves. At this time we could actually smell the end of the war, now that the defeat of Germany was obvious, but alas not our personal survival. What horror that they, and not the Germans, now tried to pull us into their decaying mass-graves. We didn’t like our mothers, sisters, and lovers in Rumbula.

The SD labor camp Party time at Security Service labor camp Lenta, was it at Christmas? Untersturmführer Scherwitz, his assistant Jenner, and other SDs sit in the front rows. They smile and greet the assembled prisoners in a civilized way, as equals. Is this real? Is our actual state a dream instead? The relation between victimized and victimizers has suddenly been discontinued during the performance. For this short time things are almost back to normal, as in peacetime. A sexy Jewish girl sings.

The dormitory at Lenta consists of two-tier bunks that fill up the top floor space of a factory as large as a soccer field. Lights are out, and everybody is about to fall asleep. The Riga National Opera baritone Shelkan sings to us from his bunk; first an opera aria, and later a Soviet song. He sings the Jewish partisan song as well. How did this song from the Lithuania forests surrounding the Vilna Ghetto reach us in 1943-44? Was it the small group from the liquidated Vilna Ghetto who arrived at Lenta about that time?

Or, maybe the Vilna Partisan song is an opera aria? The dream of the partisan song promises that the partisans will be there, arm in arm. A column is being lead to its death, but partisans with machine guns miraculously appear out of the forest — «Do not despair brothers, we are here!» The Germans run away and are killed; the bundled-up, Ghetto people — women, children, old men — are freed.

Never say this is the final road for you, Though leaden skies may cover over days of blue.

As the hour that we longed for is so near, Our step beats out the message: we are here!

What a beautiful, imagined ending, a happy-movie-ending; if only it were true. But Shelkan sings so beautifully: this is art for the people! No mystery there about the healing promise of art. Everyone experiences his uplift, from the uneducated tailors to the former capitalist factory directors.

No one talks. No one discusses or criticizes his singing.

The next day the prisoners might say, «Shelkan sang last night,» but that is all. Where else could one have such a total musical experience? At the Riga National Opera? The Milan Teatro alla Scala? The New York Metropolitan Opera? Never!

Багато хто з них — депортовані або втекли до дивних світів, самі прирекли себе на безпритульність. Пізніше, у трудовому таборі, ми вже не носили жовтих зірок. На нас був гарний в’язничний одяг — сірий, із цупкого матеріалу. Іноді нам давали звичайні пальта з величезними білими хрестами, намальованими на грудях та на спині. Ми були Schutzhäftlinge (захищені в’язні) — але від кого? Ми більше не «євреї». До чого тут хрести? Ми стали християнами? Або, з точки зору більш величної та вирафінованої інтелектуальності, чи не повертаються наші гнобителі до нашого прадавнього єврея, Ісуса Христа, який випадково спородив сторіччя страждань для свого народу? *** От я проходжу повз вас під конвоєм німецького солдата. As per regulations, I walk along the edge of the street, but my head is always erect. I wear an outfit that I know looks good on me: an Arbeitslager concoction, made for me by a tailor from an old piece of clothing. The jacket looks slightly military, something like the jacket worn by Eisenhower, but with rubber on the bottom. My yellow David’s Star shines against the brownish-olive fabric of my sweater. I still have plenty of wavy black hair and wear it as I used to before the war, and my boots are tanks, and I feel very military. With all that I beam a message to the civilians passing by on the sidewalk; here is this good-looking, young, well-built Jew, a victim of the beasts, and of YOU, good people. My back is straight as I walk. Where is your stereotypical picture now of the bent-over, weakly, hustling Jew? This young man is across the border, on the other side of death, having conquered it up to this point, and destined to either be sacrificed or to survive!

And you — civilians, Latvians, Germans — are you still on the good side of that line? But for how long?

How long will you wallow in your civilian, bourgeois contentment and your little problems? Will you too have to cross that border — statelessness and non-belonging — into history, into death?

In the end they really did eventually become second-class citizens. Many of them anyway — deportees and refugees of a strange world, themselves became homeless.

Later in the work camp, we no longer wear the yellow star. We have nice prison clothes — grey, made of good material. Sometimes we have civilian coats with huge white crosses painted over front and back.

We are Schutzhäftlinge (protected prisoners) — but protected from whom? Our status is no more «Jew.» And what do the crosses stand for? Did we become Christians? Or, with even greater, more refined intellectual acumen, did our tormentors go back into history, to our ancient Jew, Jesus Christ, who inadvertently caused millennia of horrors for his own people? *** I see myself passing by, escorted by a German soldier. While I am marching in a column with a German soldier escort, women in front, men in the rear, I feel less heroic. In fact, I am ashamed, and want to sink into the ground or hide my face. For somehow I sense that we men are responsible for this predicament: the surviving women remind me of it.

Baruch My Hebrew name is Baruch meaning The Blessed. Could I then, or should I then consider myself blessed, for having survived? Or contrarily, should I consider myself cursed for having had to go through it all.

Whichever way I consider myself marked through my actual name. I realize that I have only actually seen very few corpses along the road of my experience whereas in reality there were literally mountains of them assembled in the immediate vicinity of where I was during my more than three years of Riga imprisonment, and other mountains later in Germany’s proper concentration camps.

In the Riga Ghetto I saw bodies, a winter garden of wax-like figurines, bodies in between and on top of the gravestones, protected by high ancient stone walls, fifty, or maybe one hundred. Then, in Lenta I built a coffin for my friend Heinz Marcus who was stoned to death, but his mangled body I never got to see.

Much later in Stutthof concentration camp near Danzig I did see the body of the old musician Wolfson, but nobody paid any attention to bodies there, especially those of old men. The camp itself, comprising perhaps thirty thousand people, was easily seen as just a forest of future corpses. Wolfson’s body was lying on the floor in the washroom, and there we slurped our daily ration of watery soup right around it. Also, in Stutthof, in the middle of the night, we were awakened and ordered to view the hanging execution of a young Russian. But there was an uplifting quality to watching that since we were told the fellow had attacked SS-men. I did once hear the cries of a bread-thief, a German Jew, being beaten to death by our lager elder.

This is all that I, the Blessed, ever saw or heard by way of corpses and corpses-to-be. All the while, within the execution factory, the production turnover of which in Riga alone amounted to about 300,000. But though I was blessed to pass through all of that unscathed, and blindfolded as it were, these bodies, every one of them, have transfixed themselves in some area of my imagination. I fully and unwillingly carry them within me, resisting and rejecting the weight of this burden as much as possible. There in the imagination the number becomes a grey, misty, foggy overhanging forest spread out somewhere in a faraway land with no geographic boundaries I am nineteen, at the window of our barrack in Stutthof. A group of camp-children, aged about eight to fourteen, have been assembled outside the fence. They are cheerful, perhaps having received good traveling rations, and are being sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp. Of course I never saw those camp-children turn into bodies either. If the hand of the ex-God guided me thus, safely through these terrestrial forests, it must have had a purpose. Besides luck, interventions from above continually placed my father and me in comparatively good places of work. This by itself was a huge unbelievable rarity: two members of a family managing to stay together all the way through, and to be saved in the end! On at least three occasions the Hand of God was markedly and definitively there: when I crossed the Appelplatz into the good row, for Lenta, in front of all police and SS assembled in-between; when against all imaginable odds I succeeded in a totally suicidal act to save my father from the Nacht und Nebel group destined to exhume mass graves and then be killed; and just before liberation, in the German town of Magdeburg, as an escapee hiding behind an overturned bathtub on the top floor of a bombed-out building, of which only walls and the staircase were left intact.

We were surrounded and the whole area searched, basements in particular; for what fool would have run up a staircase leading absolutely nowhere? Up there I lay for a whole day, my feet sticking out of the short bathtub, while the search went on all around me. A man finally did come up the staircase, but then stopped and turned around, going back just before reaching the level from which he could have seen me.

Hitler’s jewish mini-state October-November-December 1941. After barbed wire fences have been completed in the Riga Ghetto it is shut off air-tight; helpless confusion and uncertainty reign. What will become of the formerly-free animals, now corralled? Will the Germans, famous for their adherence to organization and legality, finally introduce Ghetto laws, real laws, perhaps based on the pattern of the Middle Ages? Or, are directives and laws issued by the captors of the formerly free only a cover-up, an expression of anarchy by the FascistNazis? Yes, anarchy works for the well-organized, bloody Right, as much as it purportedly does in the service of Freedom! Another name for it is the old White Terror. At first the captured are in confusion, but with the fences up and the gate locked, a semblance of order reappears. The Ghetto government begins to function quite efficiently, rations are issued on a regular basis, the hospital functions and the Ghetto Police appears. We are now decked out in Jewish symbols, yellow Stars of David on our clothes — even the Ghetto police wear them on their armbands!

Worst off are the poor and those families whose men died during the early helter-skelter Aktionen by the Latvian Police — those approximately 10,000 now buried in Bikernieku Forest and the other surrounding forests — or those still in the Central Prison awaiting execution, or dying slowly of starvation and maltreatment.

The coldest of winters descends on the Ghetto. The rations of tiny half-rotten potatoes and carrots are not enough to subsist. But normalcy reappears on the Ghetto’s main thoroughfare. Long before the creation of Israel, Hitler’s Jewish mini-state appears to be functioning. *** August 1944. The smashup of the Fascists is clear, even to us, Arbeitslager Jews. Or were we already officially classified as protective prisoners by that time? Things keep going constantly downhill for the lucky Luries, father and son. But the tragedy moves toward its close.

Morning comes. Everybody lines up. We are down in the yard, by the old tree. The German pigs of the main SD office, the murderers, made the selections. First selection: to «fly into the sky» with Kommando Zeppelin, the second is Nacht und Nebel. Both are poetic names for death thought up by the SD poets.

Another selection: to dig out the bodies of the murdered in and around Salaspils concentration camp and Rumbula forest, to work in chains, and to be executed after the work is done.

Who were the real heroes in this Ghetto and Arbeitslager? The Zionists were also nonexistent as a group. There was an attempt to organize resistance by the Latvian Jewish Police. They gathered arms, but were discovered and all fifty or a hundred of them machine-gunned on this very same Appelplatz.

One policeman managed to run away and hid in the Ghetto for some time, but they soon caught him.

This writing must get out. It is not, I should hope, literature or art. The author does not get the words out in order to alleviate himself from some burden. Though he may have a dim hope of such occurrence, he doesn’t really believe in it. Rather, he is conscious of the almost-certain fact that after this stuff is out his life will be quite different, a lot less exciting and challenging. In fact his whole raison d’être might disappear, unless providence provides him with a new one. But he does hope that these words might help him arrive at some reasoned ordering of the occurrence as it sits, lodged deeply in his life. He does hope that he will be able to incorporate these events into whatever is left of his life.

He might also wish to leave another record. In his own story so very little actually happens. There is a paradoxical lack of actual happenings in a survival lasting four years, involving hundreds of fortunate coincidences. One wrong move out of hundreds would have spelled death. Accidentally being at the wrong place at hundreds of times, or accidentally coming across a dangerous situation, from the lightest to the heaviest could have been the end. The ratio of survival for Jews under German occupation was about one to zero.

The clacking of the electric typewriter sounds like whiplash, like slow gunfire.

Magdeburg, 1945, the americans liberate me April 18, 1945. I crawl out from under the double-sized bed in the Magdeburg top-floor apartment that I am hiding in. Earlier bombing has blown out the roof in the next room. I have been sleeping under this bed for the past two or three days. I wake up and hear strange-sounding conversation coming up from the street. It does not sound like German. Could it be Italian, language of the German allies? I crawl out and walk to the window. There are the first GIs, rifles in hand, single-file, chewing gum, and making these sounds. The Americans are liberating me.

Thus it turns out that Stalin and Roosevelt had a little misunderstanding. They couldn’t come to terms on who should take the city of Magdeburg near Berlin. While they were bargaining or quarreling the SS returned and marched out all the prisoners they could find in our Arbeitslager Buchenwald in Magdeburg.

Most of them perished on the roads to Sachsenhausen or God knows where — except the ones they couldn’t find, like me. In the meantime, all the German troops and police must have gotten out. Although they probably fled right into the arms of our Russkies.

The city of Magdeburg was allotted to the Americans, but only that part lying west of the Elbe River.

The Americans then marched in and liberated me. The Russians took the part of town lying east of the Elbe. And thus it came to pass that I became an American, and did not revert to the nation of my birth. *** I walk back to the camp through the bombed-out, rubble-strewn streets of Magdeburg on April 18, 1945, the day of my final liberation. There had been a false liberation eight days earlier. Not too firm on my feet, I walk as if drunk. The sun of freedom shines beautifully, and I walk on the sidewalk, openly. I am no longer afraid of being an escaped convict. I am no longer afraid of committing the triple sin of not wearing the Yellow Star of David on front and back. I am no longer afraid of walking on the sidewalk.

You could be shot or much worse for any one of those singular sins. Unsteady on my feet, I walk freely 63

A contributing factor to my going to America, maybe a decisive one, was that my sister had recently gone there from Italy. There was also the fact that my father certainly did not want to go back to Riga, or to Leningrad, from where he would most likely have been deported to Siberia. Had I been alone in the world, I would have gone back to Riga. I was also considering Palestine, but I am pretty sure it would have been Riga.

My sister’s husband Dino, an officer in the CIC (Counter Intelligence Corps), found us and took me in.

Then came service in the American Army as an interpreter. Living with a specially privileged US army unit was paradise. This was Never Never Land: all I wanted to eat, cars, Fräuleins, exciting intelligence work. I had become a regular big-shot. My word was command to the fear-stricken Germans. And so in my weak, Holocaust, concentration camp-buffeted, 21-year-old baby’s mind I had become a 100% real American. I was like the other soldiers wanting to go home to the ice-cream-land of never-ending pleasure and art.

My big-shot life in the army was just the appetizer. I thought that from then on I couldn’t go wrong, that fate in its benevolence had chosen me for never-ending success and happiness.

When I arrived in New York, I suddenly felt a stranger. I had no money. Without money you couldn’t get through the subway turnstiles. Without money you couldn’t even get a kiss from a New York bitch. After about a week my sister threw me out of her apartment. She said I was too much for her. For a long time I still fought to become 100% American, not a Jew. Spread out on the mattress, listening on my new short-wave set to Radio-Moscow I am almost in rapture, imagining how it would be to listen to the same station while spread out on my bed in Riga, or in Moscow.

I СРСР - США I 1924 - 2008

1924 Борис Лур’є народився у Ленінграді в родині успішного підприємця Іллі Лур’є.

1925 Родина втікає від радянської влади до незалежної Латвії, де Лур’є-старший займається лісозаготівлею та кіновиробництвом. Борис разом із сестрами відвідує німецькомовну школу.

1940 Улітку в Латвію увійшла Червона Армія, створено прорадянський уряд, розпочалися переслідування.

1941 У червні німці окупували Ригу, почалися масові вбивства євреїв. У жовтні позосталих, серед них і родину Лур’є, відправляють до новоствореного гетто.

30 листопада та 8 грудня 1941 в Румбульському лісі на околиці Риги німці спільно із латиськими поліцаями знищують близько 26 тисяч євреїв, переважно жінок та дітей. Серед них бабуся, мати, молодша сестра та перше кохання Бориса — Люба. З усієї родини, окрім Бориса з батьком, живою залишається тільки старша сестра Ася, яка ще до війни переїхала до Італії.

1942 Борис та Ілля Лур’є працюють у майстернях Лента у Ризі, де вони виробляють коштовні речі для дружин німецьких офіцерів.

1943 Бориса із батьком відправляють до концтабору Саласпілс.

1944 Їх засилають до пересильного концтабору Штутгоф на території окупованої Польщі. Наступним етапом стають майстерні з виготовлення амуніції Бухенвальд-Магдебурга у Німеччині.

1945 Після визволення американськими військами Борис із батьком працюють у Корпусі американської контррозвідки у Німеччині.

1946 На прохання сестри вони емігрують до Нью-Йорка, де батько розпочинає свою справу, а Борис стає художником.

1948 У Нью-Йорку Борис відвідує Лігу студентів-митців, де навчається з Регінальдом Маршем та Джорджем Гроссом.

1950 Зустріч із Беатріс Лекорну, з якою у нього починаються десятирічні стосунки. Перша персональна виставка в Creative Gallery та в Barbizon Plaza в Нью-Йорку.

1951–55 Вперше після війни Борис повертається до Європи. У Парижі зустрічається з Луї Арагоном, Френсісом Саллесом, Волсом, П’єром Сулажем, Семом Френсісом, Бофордом Делані та Честером Хаймсом. Ділить майстерню з Едом Кларком. Вперше відвідує Ізраїль. У Нью-Йорку Борис знаходить підробіток як ілюстратор.

1956–58 Зустріч із Семом Гудменом. Разом із Рокко Арменто, Вільямом Гамбіні та ще з 21 художниками вони заснували галерею March на 10-ій вулиці у Нью-Йорку.

1959–61 Борис починає створювати NO!art колажі. Зустрічає Стенлі Фішера. Разом із Семом Гудманом та Стенлі Фішером бере на себе керівництво галереєю March. У Парижі бере участь у відкритті масштабної виставки «Антипроцеси», що була організована Жан-Жаком Лебелем, та знайомиться з Ерро. В Мілані працює спільно з Артуро Шварцем, галеристом групи Арте Повера.

1962 Зустрічає Гертруду Стайн, яка стає партнером та другом на все життя.

1963 Гертруда Стайн відкриває свою галерею виставкою робіт Бориса Лур’є.

1964 9 червня помирає батько Бориса.

1975 Вперше з 1941 повертається до Латвії. Починає писати спогади «У Ризі», над якими працюватиме наступні тридцять років, а також роман «Дім Аніти».

1970-2005 Групові виставки в Нью-Йорку, Німеччині, Італії, Ізраїлі та Латвії.

2008 Борис Лур’є помирає 7 січня в Нью-Йорку.

BORIS LURIE

I USSR - USA I 1924 - 2008

1924 Boris Lurie is born in Leningrad into the family of a successful business man Ilya Lurie.

1925 The family flees the USSR for independent Latvia, where Boris’s father Ilya is engaged in forestry and film production. Boris, together with his sisters, attends a German-speaking gymnasium.

1940 In the Summer the Red Army enters Latvia, the pro-Soviet government is created, and political repression starts.

1941 In June the Nazis enter Latvia, the massacre of Jews begins. In October, the remaining Jews, including the Lurie family, are relocated to a newly designated Ghetto.

On November 30 and December 8 1941 in Rumbula forest on the outskirts of Riga, the Germans, with help of Latvian police, kill over 26 thousands Jews, mostly women and children, including Boris’s grandmother, mother, younger sister, and his first love, Ljuba. Of the entire family, only Boris, his father, and older sister Assya, who had moved to Italy before the war, remain alive.

1942 Boris and Ilya Lurie work in the Lenta Arbeitslager in Riga, where they produce luxury articles for the wives of German officers.

1943 Boris and his father are sent to Salaspils concentration camp.

1944 They are moved to the Stutthof concentration camp in the territory of occupied Poland. The next stage is Buchenwald-Magdeburg concentration camp in Germany, to work in the ammunition workshop.

1945 Following their liberation by American troops, Boris and his father work with the U.S. Army Counter Intelligence Corps in Germany.

1946 At the urging of his sister, the Luries move to New York. The father starts a new business and Boris begins his life as an artist.

1948 Boris attends the Art Students’ League, New York, studying with Reginald Marsh and George Grosz.

1950 He meets Béatrice Lecornu and begins a ten-year relationship. Boris has his first solo show at Creative Gallery and the Galleries of the Barbizon Plaza Hotel, New York.

1951–55 Boris returns to Europe for the first time. In Paris he meets Louis Aragon, Francis Salles, Wols, Pierre Soulages, Sam Francis, Beauford Delaney, and Chester Himes. He shares a studio with artist Ed Clark.

Boris visits Israel for the first time.

In New York he finds occasional commercial work in fashion illustration.

1956–58 Meeting with Sam Goodman. Creation of March Gallery in New York on 10th Street, together with Rocco Armento, William Gambini, and 21 other artists.

1959–61 Boris Lurie begins to make NO!art collages and transfer works. He meets Stanley Fisher. With Sam Goodman and Stanley Fisher, Boris Lurie takes over leadership of the March Gallery.

In Paris he attends opening of the large-scale protest exhibition Anti-procès, organized by JeanJacques Lebel, and meets Erró.

In Milan Boris works together with Arturo Swartz, the gallerist of «Arte Povera».

1962 Boris meets Gertrude Stein, who becomes partner, and friend for the rest of his life.

1963 Gertrude Stein opens her gallery with a show of Boris’s work.

1964 Boris’s father dies on June 9.

1975 Boris returns to Latvia for the first time since 1941.

He begins writing a memoir, «In Riga», which he will work on for the next thirty years, as well as a novel, «House of Anita».

1970-2005 Group shows in New York, Germamy, Italy, Israel and in Latvia.

2008 Boris Lurie dies on January 7 in New York.
