Information to help improve your quality of life and plan for the future
Sonoma-Marin 2024
Dear Readers,
Welcome to the 2024-2025 edition of Born to Age for Sonoma & Marin County. I am proud to be your publisher and to serve this county, which is a great place to live, work, raise a family, and retire.
While the Born to Age office is based in San Mateo County, we consider ourselves just a stone’s throw away from Sonoma & Marin County and the neighboring communities. It is an honor to provide you with news, content, and resources for the aging Boomers and those who care for them.
Here at Born to Age, our goal is to make resources known and more accessible to seniors, their family members, and those in the elder care industry. This year, we are proud to have a wide variety of directory listings, display advertisements, and informative articles to aid you and your loved ones through the process of aging.
I look forward to hearing your feedback and working with you in the future.

MATLOCK, STARRING KATHY BATES
Written by Julio Martinez
Matlock, a reboot of the 1986 classic series of the same name (which starred Andy Griffith), is a CBS drama television series that premiered on Sunday, September 22, 2024 (8/7c). The series stars Kathy Bates as Madeline “Matty” Matlock, a brilliant septuagenarian who returns to the workforce at a prestigious law firm to use her wily tactics to win cases and expose corruption.
The showrunner and executive producer Jennie Snyder Urman explains, “When I wrote this, I wanted to write about how older women are overlooked in society. I wanted our heroine to be constantly telling the audience that she’s being underestimated, and then I wanted the audience to enjoy watching her take advantage of that underestimation.”
The zip in the series comes when the TV audience realizes that they, too, have underestimated Madeline Matlock. Matty, working alongside the firm's younger associates, Billy (David Del Rio) and Sarah (Leah Lewis), struggles to establish herself in her new world. Other cast members include Skye P. Marshall as Olympia, Yael Grobglas as Shae Banfield, Jason Ritter as Jason and Andrea Londo in a recurring role.
“I just feel really lucky to be doing this,” Bates admits. “There are a number of levels to Matty. Sometimes she is performing for her colleagues as she interviews suspects and witnesses in front of them. Then, there's a different level of performing when she's alone with them. And she is completely different when she comes home to her husband Edwin and her grandson.”
Matty sometimes keeps things from Edwin as she straddles her lives between her home and this new work place. “She begins to love the part of her life with her co-workers almost more than she does being at home with Edwin,” says Bates. “So, we get to see really different sides of her. I just love being able to play all those different facets of my character.”
Urman adds, “The center of the show is the relationship between Kathy’s character, Matty, and Skye’s character, Olympia, the firm’s powerful lead attorney. Matty is coming back after a long time away from the workplace, and it’s a whole different world. The dynamics are different. We really wanted to dive into that
and showcase what she is an expert at what has changed since she was practicing law back in the ‘90s? That's really an important part of our storytelling. The dynamic between the older and younger attorneys is really the story that I am interested in exploring.”
When asked if she watched the original 1980s series, Bates replies, “Actually, I was starting out in New York in theatre, and I wasn’t watching television at night. That decade is mostly a blur. But, of course, I've always been a huge fan of Andy Griffith.”
The thing that excited Bates about this series was going in to sit down for her first read with the show’s creator, Jennie Snyder Urman. “I read it on a Friday and went in to meet with her on a Monday,” she recalled. “And I think the first thing I said to her was, “Don’t change a word.” And then I said, ‘Don’t leave me,’ because I knew what a challenge it was and also how much I would need her to create this amazing character. I always think of Jennie as Matty.”
Jason Ritter, who plays the privileged son of the head of the law firm, recalls, “I didn’t have much of a relationship to ‘Matlock.’ I started watching it after I got the part and it was a lot of fun. I was able to understand the beating heart of someone being underestimated; yet while
being smarter than everyone else. It was really exciting to see.”
When asked if there is a mental process she uses to play all these different levels to her character. “No,” Bates replies. “Playing each scene is like creating a little bead on a necklace. You just have to have faith you did it right. Matty is never sure what’s happening in front of her own eyes, and she has to shift with all of it. So, each scene is one little pearl, so to speak, and I just have to focus on each pearl, moment to moment.”
Urman adds, “Our pilot episode was directed by the immensely talented Kat Coiro. “During the course of the season, the audience will see how the contradictions confronting Madeline Matlock are baked into the very premise of each episode. And just when you think you know what’s happening, the show is going to twist again, forcing you to look at the story another way, revealing something entirely new.”
Jennie Snyder Urman is the showrunner and executive producer; other executive producers include Joanna Klein, Eric Christian Olsen, John Will, and Kat Coiro. The show had a sneak peek on September 22, and then premiered in its regular time slot on October 17 at 9/8c on Thursdays between Ghosts and Elsbeth. It will also be available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+.

Sell Your House, Protect All Your Equity, and Pay NO Capital Gains Taxes with this Simple Strategy Using Tools Congress Gave Us
By By David S. Roberson, ESQ
Many of my parent’s friends who have fortunately accumulated significant equity in their homes over the last several decades are faced with a dilemma of downsizing into a smaller home because they can no longer conveniently or adequately take care of their properties. Importantly, many of them desire a simpler-smaller property, usually all single- level, accessible and easy to maintain. The problem exists because if they sell their home with substantial equity they face significant capital gains exposure even with the IRC Section 121 exclusion in place.
For example, a married couple may exclude from capital gains tax $500,000 (Sec. 121) if they have resided in their primary residence two (2) out of the last five (5) years. So, if a couple has accumulated $2,000,000 in equity in their home (after improvements and original purchase price) they would still have a $1,500,000 capital gain. In California, with all of the taxes included, the capital gains rate is approximately 38% (highest in U.S.). Thus, this couple would have to pay approximately $570,000 in capital gains taxes in the next tax year after their sale. So how do we get around this challenge?
Congress Is On Your Side Sometimes – Believe It or Not
With the Congressional enactment of the American Jobs Creation Act of 2004 and the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008, and Department of the Treasury Revenue Procedure 2008-16 the government has made it easier for homeowners to keep more of their equity – and even not pay any capital gains taxes, ever – if they don’t want to.
Internal Revenue Code Section 121 (The “121 Exclusion”)
This code section says that if a property is your primary residence and you (or you and your spouse) have lived in it for two (2) out of the last five (5) years you can sell the property and exclude from taxes $250,000 if you are single, or $500,000 if you are married and file a joint tax return. This code does not apply to second homes, vacation homes, rental homes, or investment properties. Another wrinkle is that you can only exclude capital gains and not recaptured depreciation (but that is another article).

What Direct Cremation usually includes:
1. An alternative container (usually a cardboard container)
2. Removal of the body within the mortuary service area and transportation to the crematorium. (usually within 7.35 miles).
3. A 3 day storage fee.
4. Obtaining required permits.
5. Cost of using a crematory.
What Direct Burial usually includes:
1. Obtaining necessary permits.
2. Removal of the body within the mortuary’s local service area (usually within 7 35 miles from a facility) and transportation to a local cemetery.

It’s important to note that some mortuaries in Solano County don’t include the cost of the lowest priced casket/alternative container in their direct burial packages. That can be a separate charge, ranging from $405 to $1,350 (see chart). You can also purchase caskets from other retailers.
