Chapter 5: Continuity and differentiability. Exercise 5. Miscellaneous

1.

Differentiate the function w.r.t x

( 3x

2

− 9 x + 5)

9

Solution: Let y = ( 3x 2 − 9 x + 5 )

9

Using chain rule, we obtain 9 dy d = = ( 3x 2 − 9 x + 5) dx dx

= 9 ( 3x 2 − 9 x + 5) . 8

d 3x 2 − 9 x + 5) ( dx

= 9 ( 3x 2 − 9 x + 5) . ( 6 x − 9 ) 8

= 9 ( 3x 2 − 9 x + 5 ) .3 ( 2 x − 3) 8

= 27 ( 3x 2 − 9 x + 5 ) . ( 2 x − 3) 8

2.

Differentiate the function w.r.t x sin3 x + cos6 x

Solution: Let y = sin 3 x + cos6 x 

dy d d = ( sin 3 x ) + ( cos 6 x ) dx dx dx

= 3sin 2 x.

d d ( sin x ) + 6 cos5 x. ( cos x ) dx dx

= 3sin 2 x cos x + 6cos5 x.( − sin x )
